Disappointing. Coffee and service have fallen by the wayside. Used to come here frequently. Took at 6 month break - came back today, and the service has gone downhill. Server came by with my latte, and spilled a good part of it in the saucer. He said "Oh well," and left. Not even an apology, a proposal to make me a new cup, nothing. He was 5'6", glasses, shorter hair, and a beard that should have been in a hair net. Needless to say, that's a reason to not come back. Too many better coffee shops in St. John's. read more

With more coffee shops per capita than any other city, the competition for good coffee is fierce. Cathedral is one of the best cups of joe I have had! The shop is small and cute. They have fantastic pastries. One display contains the sweet options and the other contains the savory options. I had an americano, which was hands down the best americano I have ever had! Their coffee is not burnt tasting. It is so smooth and flavorful. I also ordered their cranberry scone. Perfection. No sugary sweet crust like you get at Starbucks. I love this coffee shop so hard. It's one of my clear favorites in Portland, and if I lived at all closer, I'd be a regular fixture. Why do I love it? Let me count the ways: 1) First things first, great coffee and baked goods. The coffee is from Tanager Coffee, roasted in N Portland, so it's got the hyper-local thing down. Not only is Tanager Coffee very good, it's also sporting some beautiful branding. Speaking of which.... 2) The design is on point. Cathedral Coffee is the perfect marriage between the high-design minimalism typical of third-wave coffee and that crunchy granola coffee shop you visited in college. It's beautiful, comfortable for either studying or catching up with a friend, and oh-so Instagramable. I love it. 3) The staff is excellent. Not only are they super friendly, but on my last two visits they've also cracked me up. It was all delicious and the server was very nice and gave us the bread on the house since it was our first time in. Between the color coordinated book shelves, rustic tables and inspiring windows there happens to be an incredible staff of folks (never seen an unfriendly face) and some of the most delicious coffee and eats in North Portland. The atmosphere and the edible offerings vibe off of one another to create one heck of an experience. More good news, tourists won't make the long trip up to north Portland so its locals only. I don't have a single knock on this place. Just make sure you tip well and keep it local. If these guys end up on the food network we're ruined. Just kidding they deserve the best. read more

Stopped by recently for a latte and bite to eat. It was a typical rainy day here in Portland, and I was in the area ( I was also in the mood to try a new place). The space is larger than it looks, and had plenty of seating. Lots of windows and just a great ambiance. I wasn't sure what to expect when I walked in but I was pleasantly surprised. Ordered a latte and blueberry muffin (recommended by the nice barista). Both were exceptional. The latte was nice and creamy, and the muffin was full of blueberries and had a delicious crunchy topping. Service was also really friendly and they had free Wi-fi that was very fast. Overall, a great coffee house that I would highly recommend. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

A really cute coffee spot! My Airbnb was nearby and so we just popped in not expecting much for where we were but it was such a quaint little place. Excellent service and really good coffee. There were plenty of seats to sit down to study or have a chat or just sit by the window. I enjoyed the cinnamon bun the most. The blueberry muffin was a close second: it had a coffee cake-esc top portion but soft and moist in the middle. If I'm traveling in the area again, I'd definitely come back. read more

This little gem was recommended by a dude I met at James John Cafe and then again at some food carts. I headed down, not really knowing what to expect and was EXTREMELY thrilled when I walked in. The guys behind the counter were warm and helpful, especially Austin? (I think that's what I heard someone call him...) He's the dude from Canada? Anyhow, I told him that I normally just drink drip coffee and I wanted to know about pour over. He was full of knowledge and was awesome in sharing what he was doing/why and the results. I also asked him to please decide which baked good was his favorite and slap one on a plate for me. I ended up with a delicious piece of zucchini bread and it was really cool to watch him and listen to him explain what was happening with my coffee. The space is beautiful! I love how bright it is and the great paint job. They have a little book nook (with books arranged by color), big tables to share with other folks or little tables in the back for a more one on one experience. Coffee dude came by to check in with how I liked the coffee/pastry, which I thought was nice. I've made it a point to check out as many coffee places as possible while here, and I can easily say that Cathedral is my favorite! read more

I was dropped off the wifi multiple time and so was my girlfriend. I also heard a person who was complaining about how bad their zoom call was. The aesthetic and customer service was great though! This place is fantastic! Great atmosphere and even better drinks. The space itself has many tables for getting some work done, including two large tables. There are a few cozy nooks for enjoying a relaxing cup of your favorite drink, including a cute little library area with ample reading material. As for the drinks, I've tried their mocha, chai & Portland fog. -The mocha had a great chocolate flavor without being too sweet. -The chai, in my opinion, was perfect. I love a chai with a little spice and this one didn't disappoint. -The Portland fog is an earl grey tea with honey lavender syrup and hemp milk. I am a huge lavender fan and I'm excited to try it. The honey was subtle and the hemp milk kept it from being too heavy. Overall, the drinks I've tried are flavorful, well balanced and the baristas really now how to froth some milk. Best of all, it's only minutes from me. Next time I'll be trying their cinnamon rolls, which look ridiculously good. I highly recommend Cathedral Coffee! read more
