I guess if you live in this area, where there's hardly any coffee shops, then this might seem like a good option, because, well, it's the only one. My latte was terrible. I had to stop and ask myself if they'd even used real espresso. It was not frothy at all; just a thin layer of flat foam covered the top, and whatever syrup they used also tasted highly artificial. Maybe I've just gotten spoiled after living in downtown Portland for a while. I don't see why any one would waste their money here when there is so much better coffee in the city, and I felt ashamed that I had. But I'd been deceived by the stellar reviews. Hell, Starbucks is better than this place, and cheaper. The chocolate chip cookie I also bought wasn't as bad as the latte, but it wasn't worth the price either. read more

I was disappointed in My experience. I came cause I read they had quiche. When I arrived they were sold out. Bummer. I chose their savory waffle and was disappointed. Except for the toppings I would not have been able to gag it down. It was terribly hard and crunchy. Probably the worst waffle I've ever had. Refills for drip coffee are $1.00. What happened to generous customer service these days? You can go to any sit down restaurant and get a cup of coffee and $10 meal (the price of the waffle) and they give you free refills. Well! I will say that I always enjoy my mornings here. The staff is kind and not pretentious like a lot of specialty coffee shops in Portland tend to be. The coffee is DELICIOUS, for real life, so tasty and made with great care. After inquiring about the roaster, found out it's a north portland dude that roasts for only a couple other places (#golocal). All of his coffees have really intentional and unique stories behind how they found and support the coffee farmers. And that's the story for every other part of the store. They really contribute to the neighborhood they live in. Thankful for people who really care about what they're doing. This place is legit. read more

This place is fabulous. Great furniture, love the atmosphere, an interesting clientele base, and the people who work there are really nice. Like weirdly overly nice, like those kids you knew in high school who went away on the weekends to christian summer camps, but like the 'cool' christian summer camps where people got tattoos on their wrists that say 'jesus' and played electric guitars to like, 'I am Free' by the NewsBoys. you know? There's nothing wrong with that, and I love spending time there, but it's really a whole different world. I'm like, wow, never met people in real life like this before. They're nicer than I thought. I have no complaints about this place other than there are no vegan pastries offered. I asked but they said they have no plans to offer any. Which is fine, but I was able to cross "Seventh Day Adventist" off of my guess list of what kind of Christians they are. As a hardcore atheist I was conflicted about supporting the business, but really they're such nice people, and if I hadn't noticed all of the religious tattoos and the social awkwardness I never would have known they were christians, and I like that they aren't pushing any beliefs onto anyone, so I am going to continue supporting this absolutely lovely establishment. Anyway, if you like really really amazing coffee, great furniture and ambiance and really kind services, and great people watching, then I highly recommend this place! read more

I have found my morning nirvana! I have been wanting to come by for months and I am so sorry I waited. The space is much larger than it appears from the outside, and there are a variety of different areas to sit in. We chose a cozy spot near the "library" area.. were there was a selection of reading material to pick . The food snob in me LOVED the homemade baked goods..truly some of the best I have had in my 20 years here in PDX. The cinnamon roll was a dream ..warm with cream cheese frosting and truly seemed made with love. I had a fresh peach coffee cake that was to die for..Probably out if the oven only 30 minutes before. I can't attest to the coffee ..As I am a tea drinker. Here is my one complaint: the tea was a bit spendy at $3.25 ( yes, I know it's Townshends) , but WHY charge more for a larger cup when the only difference is the amount of water? I can understand charging more for the pot...but not a cup. Especially when a pour over or espresso is less expensive than a tea and more labor intensive. read more

I was looking for a snugly chair to read in and eyed one from a Yelp pic of this place. I stopped in for a cup of sencha tea and a pumpkin chocolate chip muffin. The tea was well-brewed (not overdone!) and let me try the muffin before committing to it. Versatile interiors that suit both the lazy reader and the time-burdened student or professional. Best waffles I've ever had, both savory (melted brie and bacon with a peach jam) and sweet (berries and homemade peach icecream). Sadly the waiter dropped a waffle, caught it in his hand, and proceeded to serve it anyway without offering to remake it (a bit untrained), but aside from wearing a bit of berries on my jacket, the rest of the experience was wonderful. After not being overly impressed my first visit, just opened, lots of things still in the works, I can say now the concept has been well executed. I almost don't care about the coffee since the space itself is the real heart and soul of this shop. I love all the wood tables and benches, and there's lots of different seating arrangements making it ideal for your lonesome self, or a large group. I was also informed they have a baker that comes in every day at like 2AM to prepare the delicious jaw dropping goodies displayed near the register. To top it all off, the coffee is in fact really good. From what I remember, they had a few pastries but wasn't really a restaurant. So thus place is just adorable. It is so friendly and everyone in there knows everyone else. They have so many regulars and it feels like a family. They also support local artists and artisans by putting their artwork on the walls and displaying their trinkets and products. The food and drinks are not over priced and it is just a nice place to be. By far the best coffee place in all of Portland! The coffee is just so smooth and delicious. I feel so disappointed now when I get coffee anywhere else. The staff is so friendly and I go there so often the know my order immediately. For breakfast grab a slice of the quiche or a cinnamon roll and in the afternoon snack on a lime bar.....so delicious! Cathedral Coffee is a gem and I'm so glad to have it in our 'hood. It's always chill and friendly. The coffee is great, and consistent. There are plenty of places to sit and work alone, or to socialize. The decor is fun and it always feels happy even in the greyest weather. And with the addition of their bakery section, I think it's basically perfect. They make the stuff in-house and it's all awesome. Fantastic cozy coffee shop with relaxing Portlandia ambiance. Quiet place to surf the net, read or study while enjoying a delicious cup of java! Their pastry is handmade from the shop's own little bakery. We tried the toast (made at the shop) with peach jam (again made at the shop) and it was simple one of the best jam toast we've ever tasted. We also tried the ham bun and the sausage roll -- Wow! They were so good! (And we loved the homemade peach jam so much, we bought a jar to bring back with us to California. We wanted to savior the taste of Portland as long as we can. :-) Cathedral Coffee is a definitely a stop for good coffee, pastry and relaxing vibes if you're in the area, near University of Portland. I recently started a list of coffeeshops in Portland that I needed to check out. Some places left me underwhelmed, but Cathedral Coffee exceeded my expectations in terms of service and quality. The vanilla latte I ordered was fantastic, but if you order a 16 oz size, be prepared for a very big cup of coffee! I got the lemon poppyseed scone, but there are so many pastry options that I will definitely be coming back. Overall, if you are in the area, this is definitely a place to check out. read more
