I live in the St Johns area and a neighbor recently walked by with a great haircut that she had just received from Cathedral Park Salon, so when I was up for a cut I booked an appointment. The salon is tucked inside a larger apartment building at the base of the St. Johns Bridge, and has a warm, inviting atmosphere filled with plants and all the wonderful Aveda scents. I was lucky to have my hair cut by Maya today, a newer addition to the salon, and I'm absolutely thrilled with the results. I came in wanting a shag cut and brought a few inspiration screenshots. Maya mentioned she specializes in razor shags, and she completely delivered--checking in throughout the process on bang length, layers, and overall shape to make sure it matched my vision. I've been seeing Jules (recently promoted to Lead Stylist!) for the last year and a half and I just love her and the salon. It's a small place but beautifully kept with warm wood and plants everywhere. Everyone treats each other like family and they all respect your space if you don't feel very talkative. I'm an introvert so getting a haircut is usually anxiety-inducing for me, but it's always made easier with Jules. She's just lovely - she has one of those lights inside her that glows and warms all around her. I have heard very good things about the other stylists there, too, but I mean.. I have to go with the lady who loves Halloween and Star Wars as much as I do. I always leave feeling like a hundred bucks - also about what I spend (every 3-6 months) - and totally worth it. She's the only stylist I've been to that can simply blow-dry my hair straight with a cute curl at the end instead of needing to also use a straightener, so the process takes half the time I was used to before. And my hair stays cute for days. I'm just really happy with her and if she ever moves I will probably have to follow. :) read more

Wow, wow, WOW! The environment in the salon is incredibly intentional and informative. I was greeted by name as I entered the Salon for the first time ever. I scheduled extra time with Head Stylist Taylor because my hair is quite rigorous to work on and he not only had the knowledge to cut my hair in the most gorgeous way possible but he also had the tools to make it as comfortable for himself and his fellow stylists as possible! Taylor diligently instructed and informed his assistant Eva throughout the process passing on his knowledge to others in a way only someone with passion and a true sense stewardship can. Taylor is incredibly gifted when it comes to cutting and styling hair. I'm a man with wavy hair, and after getting some recent haircuts that weren't great, I decided that I needed to go to an actual stylist - since I'd like to grow my hair out longer, but keep it styled/maintained. Cool fact: He said I have type "2a" hair. I had no idea what this meant, but now I do, and that's nice to know haha. I got the "curly cut", which was an excellent experience. Taylor listened to my requests, as well as my GF's (essentially, what we both wanted done), and provided his own insight, expertise, and what he believed could be done. Additionally, he had a great attitude, humor, and did an excellent job. I don't think I've ever gotten a haircut as good as this before. The vibe was pretty cool, too. The place was filled with some plants, cool looking decor, and felt homely. One of the stylists made me a latte while I waited, which was great. All in all, this was an excellent haircut. Taylor listened, provided his insight, taught me how to maintain and "care for my hair", and did a terrific job. I'm a Black woman with very, very, very curly (3c/4a) hair and I've spent my entire life trying to make my hair "manageable" when really I just needed to learn how to do my hair and have a cut suited to my hair type. Taylor did all of that in ONE hour. Almost 30 years of frustration and in 60 minutes got a well-priced solution. I didn't have to jump thru hoops and wait three months or make a deposit or follow challenging booking processes. Just made an appointment and got a game changing hair cut. I also had the added challenge of damaged curls from dyeing and inconsistent texture from keratin treatments, and he was able to work with all of it. I grew up peeking into salons to see if there was a Black stylist doing hair and would run away if there wasn't one. If you grew up doing that too, let that go - he knows what he is doing and I'd recommend him to anyone no matter what hair type they have. read more

I'm sad to say that I recently had a pretty horrible experience at Cathedral Park Salon , which was my first (and last) time there. Everything started out okay: I appreciated being offered hot tea while I waited and Taylor took the time to sit down with me and talk about my hair goals, (though he did make way too big of a deal about me using Herbal Essence Mousse). But then things got much worse. To start, the haircut itself felt rushed. Taylor spent about five minutes cutting my hair and didn't offer to let me view the back once it was done, a big mistake given that the haircut turned out to be both uneven and had a long unblended section in the back. Then Taylor rushed out of the salon for another appointment and left me with essentially an intern who gave me an awkward head massage, barely washed my hair, and then put a deep conditioner over gel after she forgot to do the deep condition that I paid extra for in the first place. Then, she placed the overhead dryer too close to my head and my hair got stuck in it. While she was pulling out individual strands from the dryer, which was very painful, the other woman who worked there and was right across the room didn't even look up and offer to help. I left the salon feeling pretty mistreated, and though I did get a full refund after emailing the salon the next day, I decided to write this review so that others might not be as blind-sided as I was by the horrible service. read more

Came in on two different occasions - one for a basic cut and the other for a correction as the first cut was pretty bad. I have wavy hair so was excited to go to someone who could show me some new tips, which he did, but I think he got lost in that and forgot that I also wear my hair straight. He seemed like a super nice guy, but the cut was really not good. The correction was even worse. I'm happy to see so many others really like him as I don't want his business to fail in our awesome neighborhood! Update: Below is a yelp conversation between me and Taylor just now. Apparently he can't handle any sort of criticism. Totally unprofessional and immature. And yet another pleasant note from Taylor even though I said nothing else to him. My husband and I stumbled upon the cathedral park salon in hopes to find a near by artist that could deliver consistently good haircuts at a reasonable price. Taylor has gone above and beyond our expectations! From expert short cut and color to his wonderful head massages Taylor hits what we are looking for every time. To top off his great services he also has a great and approachable personality. Over the year and a half of going to Taylor he has made me feel extremely comfortable, as if we have been friends for years. I have been getting my haircut by Taylor for three years. It's by far the longest I've gone to any one single hair stylist and the reason for that is simple: Taylor gives me a great haircut and he gets it done in a timely fashion, with good conversation, a nice, modern atmosphere and sometimes a beer. This place just opened and I happened to see the sign for it the other day while I was waiting for my bus. There are some good reviewed barbers in downtown, but because I live in St Johns I thought I would give this place a shot. The inside was attractive with the whole reclaimed/natural wood look. Taylor, the owner, was very friendly and asked me if I needed anything to drink. Resting on the carpet near the door was the owner's big dog Tank - the sweetest dog - he was totally lounging the whole time. Taylor gave me a great haircut although I didn't really have any upfront demands. I'm a very vague customer - "just make it look good." He shortened it up, tapered the back, and left it long up top to give it some dimension. Included with the haircut was a scalp massage with a warm towel and a cleanup of the neck. He nicked me a few times but it's really not his fault because I have a million moles on my neck. He used a straight razor so it's going to last longer than if he had just gone with the buzz tool. We had a great chat about St Johns and Portland and about doing what you're passionate about. Clearly Taylor wants to give his customers more than a typical barber experience. If you have a few extra bucks to spend I recommend stopping in or calling to make an appointment. read more

Taylor is a hair wizard! I feel SO lucky I found him. I was looking for a curly hair salon to salvage my formerly curly hair that I mistakenly got a chemical treatment on to try to save time styling it. Taylor looked over my hair and told me what he could realistically do with it right now until the treated hair grew out. I didn't know that "realistic" would be the best hair cut of my life. It was the royal treatment. First he made me a hot cup of coffee in a French press. Delicious and unexpected. He has two little dogs that he brings to work with them - they are so well-behaved and socialized! One of them jumped up into my lap and fell asleep. His hair-washing massage was also amazing. Then, he went to cutting. He is very personable but I also get the sense that he would respect if a client preferred less conversation. Let me tell you, I was in and out in 38 minutes. The cut is absolutely perfect for the shape of my face. The layers are masterful. It is about a week later and I still love it. I go to work without putting in any product most of the time and so many people have told me, "Your hair looks amazing! Where did you get it cut?" I met with Taylor (who is absolutely fantastic) and he gave me some Great advice on what to do next with my hair. The consultation was really informative and he definitely took the time to listen to what I was looking for, as opposed to giving me a cookie cutter haircut. Believe the hype. I had given up on my hair. I used to have fabulous curls, but my texture has changed quite a bit over the years. I had convinced myself that my hair just wasn't capable of looking good anymore. I was also stuck in a rut of cheap haircuts, imperfect products, and methods that used to work but no longer do. Taylor gave my curls a new lease on life. I thought I already knew everything about curly hair- not so. I learned a ton. It's been three months and my hair is still looking fabulous from my cut. I came here last year for a simple trim. The haircut was good. I had a dog sitting in my lap most of the time which was also hilarious. My only criticism is the fact that he took my photo for his instagram page, and then claimed to do highlights on me when he didn't...i only got a haircut. Myself and my two children had an appointment with him today and he welcomed us into his salon with enthusiasm, which is a welcome change for me. You see, when you darken the door of a salon in this town with two kids you usually get empty stares and long faces. The tall-haired divas of the Pearl aint down with no kids in their sanctuaries, and the emo hipsters of Alberta, Mississippi and Hawthorn zip up their hoodies in disgust when we roll in. But not in St. Johns. We respect the kids and the stay at home dads who bring them out into the world for lunch and a haircut. Taylor is perfect for St. Johns. He is quick, damn good at his craft, and nice as the day is long. I predict that I will have to book months out for his time very soon. Good things like this are hard to keep on the down low. Taylor and I have known each other for years, but I'll be honest in that I just started using him as my stylist at the end of last year. I never should have waited so long! Taylor is careful and attentive to listen to what his clients are desiring in a hairstyle, both from the cut and the color. I am a creature of habit and have had the same cut/color for the past 5+ years. However, because of our friendship, I trusted Taylor to do what he felt would be the most flattering for my face shape and skin tone. He worked his magic and my hair looks the best it has looked in years. It was not a radical change, but it was a subtle change to how the highlights were done that framed my face better and has garnered nothing but compliments since the change. I have followed Taylor Mathes for a couple years . I was so excited to hear of him opening up his own salon and had to get in as quickly as possible. I lived in Canada for two years trying various salons & spent hundreds of dollars and walking out with a big hole in my wallet and sad for my hair. Entering Taylor's salon it was magnificent. A bit earthy and minimalistic with a focus to cutting hair and not selling you products/tools. Taylor has great knowledge of hair and how to make it look fabulous. I got a wash and a wicked scalp massage. What a delight that was! I had a dry cut and at the end I was smiling ear to ear because how gorgeous my hair felt and looked. For any of you who are not familiar with St. John's, and who are following your navigation system to find his salon, let me start with do not go over the St. John's bridge. There is nothing there, I promise! The salon is located in the new building just before going over the bridge on your right side. Parking is tricky, but you can find street parking. I parked on the street next to Burgerville. The salon is adorable. It combines modern with classic, and without the decor you can still feel the edge. That may be because of Taylor's ink. I was greeted by a Taylor when I entered and he was genuinely kind. I showed him a picture of what I wanted, asked for his opinion, and he gave me exactly what I wanted. I absolutely do not want to not mention the head massage. Because even if I had not had my hair cut, it is worth going for the massage!! Taylor has made me into a repeat customer in the future. A close friend of mine recommended Cathedral Park Salon to me last weekend and I scheduled an appt online for the following Tuesday (a couple days ago). I love that it was easy to do that on my own busy schedule and not have to try to call during business hours. I had a great experience! The salon is simply and nicely decorated, clean and welcoming. Taylor took the time to get to know my preferences, previous hair experiences (positive and negative) to give me the haircut and color touch-up I wanted. The only thing I would mention as a heads up, is that he has a large mellow salon dog. So if you're uncomfortable with large dogs, you might ask him to put him in the other room. I recently moved to Portland and needed a haircut badly! I live across the street from this salon and based on other reviews, I decided to give it a shot. Taylor is AMAZING! When I arrived he was extremely welcoming. We sat and chatted about why I was there and what I was looking for. I let him know about my anxieties of having someone I didn't know cut my hair and he understood and reassured me. We agreed that for the first appointment we wouldn't do anything drastic! Let me start by saying this is my first review and it's so important to me. Taylor is fantastic! I'm the type of customer that gets pretty nervous with big change but Taylor always delivers. I sought him out when I learned he moved from his previous salon because he's just that good and I can't imagine going to anyone else in Portland.
