This restaurant is interesting to say the least. There's no menu online and their website needs a desperate update. It's located "off the beaten path". The entrance looks like private property which makes it quite difficult to find. However, once found, the outdoor patio is very charming and the indoor decor is comforting. It's a very small establishment. Only two servers for the whole dining room, so expect very slow service. The menu is small, simple, but very VERY pricey. Each entreé is $34-$36 and doesn't come with much. There are no budget options here. I ended up ordering the "famous" mushroom soup which was disappointing. Overall the ambiance and service were great! The indoor and outdoor dining space is so cute an inviting, it really makes the whole experience. We started with the mushroom and crab soup which was the best of the whole meal. The bread and tomato oil spread was also delicious. My husband got the lamb shank and said the flavor was good but nothing special. I got the scallops and crab meat, it was good but nothing special. Overall the dish lacked flavor, could use a little more seasoning and I'm not one to love seasoning. For dessert we got the key lime pie and blueberry cheesecake which both were delicious! I was disappointed with this place, because I unfortunately didn't get to eat there. I made a reservation online for my wife's birthday but didn't receive a confirmation. It has limited hours so I tried emailing for a confirmation, no response. I waited until it was open and tried calling but no one ever answered. Finally, after a week or so of trying to call, someone answered and confirmed that my reservation existed. She said she would send the confirmation "again." I never got it the first time and didn't get it the 2nd time either. So anyway I went at the time of the reservation and just stood there in the doorway for 25 minutes. No hostess, no greeter. It looked like the staff was way overwhelmed. One of the servers eventually ran by and said she would be right with us, but after another 15 minutes we had to leave because we had plans after and wouldn't be able to make them if we waited longer. It's a shame because it's a really cool looking spot and the food we saw looked good, but the basic fundamentals of running a restaurant seem to be lacking. read more

We've been to Catherine's for dinner twice now, and will be back again. Our first time was on a snowy night, and the setting was magical (and the food matched). We especially love the crab and mushroom soup, and the desserts are out of this world. Love that it is BYOB! Also, the owner is a hoot, and so accommodating. Only con is that parking is tight, but there is open parking at the little league lot just a few minute walk down the road. Forget the congested main line - this place is worth the drive! read more

Catherine's is so cute!!! I've been 3 times and all for brunch, so I need to make a point to try dinner. Unionville is such a cute little town with old homes near Kennett. It's so worth the little back road trip to get to Catherine's. Love that it's BYOB. I highly recommend bringing some champagne and ordering juice for a little breakfast cocktail. Their OJ is great, as is their pomegranate cranberry juice. On my most recent visit I had a delicious goat cheese salad and my friends both had crab cake sandwiches. Everything was amazing. Lack of staff, only one waitress for the restaurant. $15 cork fee and only cash tip!! $25 cancel fee per person. I dined at Catherine's today as part of a group. We went for brunch for my friend's birthday. I am writing this review mainly because I found so many of the comments here on yelp to be confusing and incorrect in the end. First off, the location is absolutely charming. Lovely decor and to top it off the restaurant had a large chalk board where they had written a special birthday message for the birthday girl. The table was beautifully set as well. All the food was good but the highlight was the bananas foster waffles. We shared this as an appetizer, but it would also make a great dessert. The main thing I would like to clarify is the BYO policy. There is a $10 corkage fee per table. This means that you can open as many bottles of wine as you like for $10. This is completely reasonable and in line with other local BYO restaurants that I have no idea why there are so many negative comments here about the policy. Catherine's in Unionville - We wanted a place to eat near Longwood Gardens so I think someone in this group recommended it. It has a very charming outside and inside setup - kind of farmhouse chic. We got the seared tuna with blackberry jalapeno coulis, black angus cheese burger, very thick cut applewood smoked bacon and eggs benedict - all extremely delicious. It is also fairly wheelchair accessible ( at the table next to us someone was in a wheelchair although I don't think the bathrooms had accessible entries) Great find if you don't want to deal with the long lines at the crowded Longwood eating options. read more

The server took her credit card and returned it to her, so she assumed she paid. A little while later she received a rude and accusatory phone call from management claiming she stole the soup. To celebrate my mother's birthday, we had lunch reservations at Catherine's on a Friday at 1pm. When we got there, we were surprised that there was only one other table occupied, and they were finishing up their meal. I guess it was nice that we had the place to ourselves, though! The outdoor area of Catherine's is beautiful- there is a nice patio with umbrellas, and an outdoor garden. They have both a restaurant and a small art gallery next door. Walking in to Catherine's, the entrance is exactly what I expected to see. The dining room also had some gorgeous pieces- for example, stunning windows with window covers, and some old church pews for seating- but I hated the tables and chairs. The tables were tiny and round, with light wood, and the chairs matched. They looked strewn around the room and didn't match the decor and feel of the place. They should have some dark wood farm-type tables instead- all of us agreed the tables looked out of place. Our server was very nice but also very relaxed. We brought a half bottle of champagne with us (it's a BYOB), and she brought us wine glasses for our champagne (guess they don't have champagne glasses) and also didn't open or chill our champagne bottle for us, which I thought was weird for a BYOB. Also, on their website it states that there is a $7 BYOB fee per table, which is kind of ridiculous. The lunch menu looked amazing, and I wanted so many different things. I ordered the sirloin burger ($10.95), my mom ordered the chicken salad sandwich ($8.95) and my sister ordered the crab cake and salad ($11.95). All the food was amazing and was definitely a great value for the price. My only slight disappointment was that the sides aren't listed on the menu, and we ended up getting pasta salad with the burger and chicken salad sandwich. To be fair, it was the best pasta salad I've ever had, but I'm not a huge fan of pasta salad and was really hoping for some french fries or potatoes. My mom said the chicken salad was the best she's ever had, and all of us cleaned our plates. For dessert, we shared a chocolate brownie mousse cake and a key lime pie. The key lime pie was amazing and probably the most memorable thing I ate- will definitely be craving it in the future! After lunch, we strolled through the art gallery. It was small- about two rooms- but there were some interesting pieces in it. Overall, a great lunch. I think there are a few things Catherine's could do to be even better, but we liked the food so much that I'm sure we will be back! read more

We went there for brunch, and ordered typical brunch fare. Our food was barely average, not at all what we expected. It almost seemed that the dishes were pre made and heated quickly to get through the day. The service was non attentive, while the server was pleasant , it seemed it was an effort to refill coffee . Food is amazing. We have been coming here for years. Sadly, the last two times we were disappointed by the attitude of the owner. She was too busy to be friendly and almost seemed annoyed when we asked her a question. We got the receipt for our meal and there was no place for a tip. When we asked the owner she was very snide as to remind us that the the cash tip policy was on the website. So when we asked for change se seemed rather annoyed. Not the way to keep or earn customers. Honestly, I don't think I will go back just because of the vibe she gave off. Waiter, Adam, was excellent. A+. My husband decided to treat me for a special meal at Catherine's because no reservations could be found for the 3rd Thursday in Kennett Square. We use to frequent Catherine's regularly but tired of the same menu offerings. Unfortunately, after a 2 year hiatus not much has changed. The fresh tomato and basil salsa and warm fresh bread are delicious, but the same. I ordered the house special salad. The warm goat cheese party had a dusting of pistachio and there were only 2 blackberries and 1 grape tomato halved. Kind of skimpy for the price. I had the crab cakes. Still they have lump meat and are very quite good. The husband had the ravioli appetizer. The smoked scallops were delicious but a heavy hand with the sundried tomatoes distracted. The blackened tuna portion was huge and the temperature was perfect. Seasoning was a little heavy on the cheesy risotto and the fresh green beans were a little too crunchy as if only blanched. All in all, service was good, however we were frustrated that our cooler which turned out to be an ice bucket leaked constantly and took over the small table and dropped on the husband's pants. We both felt the attention to detail has slipped and with nothing really new and innovative, we probably won't return. read more

Then to really annoy you, these 40 mile out of Philly restaurants hit you with a $10 corkage fee, which is just stealing from you. Your already paying 30+ per entree, but they still feel the need to take a little more. Even when I walk out with the best meal, I'm always a little annoyed at that. Why would restaurants, with so much competition, do everything right and still have customers leaving a little annoyed. Baffling. Probably why it takes me 6 months to a year to return. And don't let them fool you with their, it's to cover the fact that you won't be buying our drinks. You can buy 3 sodas and 2 bottles of sparkling and your still paying $10 corkage. Those fees originated from restaurants with full bars that allowed people to bring their own wine. Not bar less places like this. Note: to be fair, bringing in a local bottle of wine will not incur a fee. Good luck remembering and when you forget plan on being twice as annoyed, as I am and thus this review. Do this. Refuse it and don't be afraid to be a little loud, it's your hard earned money they are stealing. When they don't take it off the bill, take it off the tip and note it on the bill. Believe me, the waitress will get reimbursed by management and management by ownership. Now ownership has angry customer, angry waiters and angry management. I made a reservation weeks ago for the Valentines Brunch. I called to confirm my reservation and it is just a recorded line, so I left a message asking for a call back. I looked for an email when I didn't get a call back after several days. No email can be found and once again when I called a second and third time, no one answers. I never received a call back so I had a bad feeling that my reservation was worthless today. I walk in, and they do not appear to be requiring or honoring reservations since no one asks if we have one. We are seated and handed their standard brunch menu. I kindly say to the waitress,"We made a reservation for the Valentine's Day brunch." She says she will go grab the menu. A second waitress sees that we have the menu for the Valentine's Day brunch and tells me that they are sold out. I tell her that we made a reservation specifically for that and she tells me that unfortunately they were busier than expected, but that she will let the manager know we are disappointed. My wife and I order off of the standard menu. It was good. And I think very reasonably priced for what we got. But it was not anything close to the Valentine's Day brunch that we were looking forward to. The manager never comes to apologize or explain. Even on a busy day like today, If my staff let me know that a person was upset because of a reservation made and not honored, I would at least give some sort of apology or explanation. I asked for the manager or owners email when the waitress takes our bill. I know it is a busy day and I didn't want to stress either the owners or the manager out today. But I did want to let them know how disappointed I was that a reservation I made weeks ago through open table was completely ignored/ overlooked and more importantly that I never received a call back to my message left. The waitress says she will bring me an email. When she brings my change I ask her for the email and she says the manager wants to come speak with me. I wait a few minutes, the manager does not come. I think she realized that I was the same person as before. And I make the decision that I will probably never be back. My wife and I have celebrated here numerous times but Catherine's let me down completely today. We purchased numerous gift certificates that we have out at Christmas. My husband and I dined at Catherine's for our wedding anniversary. It was a Wednesday night and we had a 7:30pm reservation. The restaurant was fairly quiet when we arrived, only about four other tables when we arrived. I thought the interior was decorated nicely, lots of candles, fresh flowers etc. We sat at table near the front of the building next to a window. As other reviewers have mentioned, the lighting was low, but I did not find it difficult to read the menu or to see my food. I would describe it more as mood lighting than anything else. They started us with a few slices of warm bread and a tomato basil dipping sauce. The dipping sauce was very good, sort of a very finely chopped bruschetta with a good amount of balsamic vinaigrette in it. My husband really liked it and I'm going to try to recreate it at home. (we'll see how that goes!) I ordered the mushroom and crab soup. It was quite good and very hot. If you like mushroom soup, you will like it. My husband is not really a fan and said "It tastes like mushroom soup" when he tried a bite of mine. So there you have it :-P. He started with the goat cheese salad. The salad was very nice, the goat cheese was fairly mild and served warm. For entrees I had the blackened tuna steak medium rare. The portion on the tuna was extremely large, I could only eat half of it. It was cooked very well, and I liked the poblano pepper crema it was served with. It also a risotto and sautéed green beans. The green beans I think had Chinese five spice powder on them. I liked them independently, but didn't feel that they really paired well with the tuna. My husband had the braised short rib pasta. The pasta on the menu was replaced by a different kind. He really enjoyed it, but I thought it was a bit on the bland side. Of course, I was directly comparing it to my spicy tuna steak, so probably partially the contrast. We had the key lime pie and flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Both were excellent, though I think I would split them in the future since by that point I was very full! Service was attentive and friendly all night. My only real complaint is that one other table was seated as we were going into dessert. The restaurant was otherwise empty at that point, and they seated them right next to us. I feel like a little buffer room would have been nice so that we could quietly enjoy the remainder of the meal. Our bill for three courses each + corkage fee (BYOB) was a little over $100 which I feel was very reasonable for the quality of food and service provided. read more

We've been to Catherine's twice - once at the end of the summer when patio seating was still a good option, (and a very fine one, at that!) then latter in the fall when we had dinner there with friends in the main dining room. Both were really nice experiences. The menu is a bit limited (and was essentially identical both times we were there) but everything we ordered was amazing. I particularly remember the mushroom soup, some cheeses, and the duck, which was very good. Not life changing, but good! Interesting to read a few reviewers who were discontent with the service. I would say that service was not speedy either time we were there, but as far as that goes, we were in linger mode both times, so that was fine with us. Certainly never felt neglected! Our server the first time was especially gracious to take a few moments to tell us about the menu and the history of the restaurant. Nice. It's a very charming place where you're gonna drop $100 even though you bring your own wine, but totally worth it in my book. I suspect that we'll work Catherine's into our regular once or twice a year rotation. Would be a great place to take out-of-towners for a taste of Chester-county-small-town-easy-livin'-fine-dining! It is a family owned and run business, so make sure you're not in a hurry when you go; other patrons might call this service "slow." The mushroom crab soup was very flavorful with just the right amount of kick and plenty of chunks for the mushroom lovers. The pistachio-goat cheese salad was delicious, but *really* small for a $9 salad. I ordered the duck and it came with a tomato - basil risotto that was tasty, but not outstanding. Risotto is tough to execute very well. The duck itself was ok -- I would assign 4 stars instead of 3 if it was more tender and without gristle. Yikes. Catheines has been on my bucket list for years and my husband finally took me for my birthday dinner. Housed in a very quaint historic building, the ambiance was superb. The staff could not have been more gracious and welcoming. There were fresh roses on the table and just the right amount of candle light. The mushroom soup was the best and came in a large portion. It could have been a meal in itself. We also enjoyed the sea scallops which were served with risotto and green beans. Very delicious! The food was excellent, we both enjoyed the mushroom soup to start, then I had a scallops and shrimp special that came with delicious risotto. Since it was our anniversary we shared a dessert, a slice of cheesecake that was so big we even took half home! Overall a really nice place for a special occasion. I didn't realize the restaurant had two seatings - one at 6:30 and another at 8. I switched our reservation to 7:15 and when we got there the place was packed. It took a minute to get someone to give us menus and get the attention of our server, but once we did she was efficient and friendly despite being crazy busy. It's super dark inside and they give out flashlights to read the menu. The mushroom soup with crab was excellent although it could have been a bit hotter. I ordered the salmon - and I judge a place by how well the salmon is cooked - and it was perfect. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp with noodles and she loved the flavors. We skipped dessert. Rare find. You drive through the rolling countrysides, then come to this oasis. Lovely, quaint, unassuming charm, and then such wonderful cuisine! She recommended the Sunday brunch for which this place is supposedly liked. I probably won't but it sounded nice. Cons: Prices were high and $7 corkage was annoying given overall prices, and parking situation was awful (had to wait for someone to leave --later found out a second lot was behind the first but it was blocked by an improperly parked pickup truck). We had lunch at Catherine's on a weekend after visiting nearby Longwood Gardens which worked out well. It was not crowded at all. The restaurant is a mixture of 'old world' architecture and modern and vintage decor. Seating is comfortable and the table is attractive (although the bird-shaped pepper shaker was nearly empty).There is also outdoor dining on a back patio too, which we declined to even consider on a blazing hot July afternoon. The food was excellent. I had what may seem like a boring choice - A chicken salad sandwich on multigrain bread. But it was the best chicken salad you could imagine. Ingredients were all fresh and tasty and the side salad of bow pasta and spinach was also a good compliment. Ice tea was served in a heavy glass and was deliciously cold. I have forgotten what my dining companions chose for lunch, but we were all quite satisfied with every aspect of the meal, including a cup of hot and full-bodied coffee to top off the meal. Service was very good but perhaps a bit slow. It took a good 15 minutes to get the order placed, but we were not in a hurry. No other complaints except while exiting the parking lot I noticed a rather large pothole that really needs to be filled in by someone. read more
