I recently hosted a lovely bridal shower for my daughter in the banquet room at The Gables at Chadds Ford. The venue was beautiful and perfectly suited for our event. There is a newly enclosed sunroom area connected by glass doors that can be positioned opened into the banquet room. This area was ideal for our flower bar which looked spectacular. We loved the food and received numerous compliments from guests - many of whom helped themselves to seconds! We opted for The Gables plated salad, brunch buffet and added a crab cake station. Literally everything was delicious, which is often hard to accomplish in a buffet setting. Our event host Cathy was kind and very accommodating as she worked with me during the course of planning the event, as well as the day of. Her staff was equally kind and attentive during the event. I heard that this was the place for some of the areas most raved about mushroom food dishes! So I'm here today to try one of these fine mushroom dishes! We ordered the mushroom soup and arugula salad to split as appetizers. Absolutely so flavorful , so fresh, & so delicious !! Absolute heaven! My bff where did the pork ribeye and I got the lobster gnocchi. This was so delicious. I seldom chose pasta and somehow the description with corn and lobster and the soothing sauce just made me feel so relaxed. I felt like I was home eating such wonderful comfort food. Love! Everything tasted well tended to. Pleasing Textures. I felt like I was home. A taste of home. I tasted my bff's choice. The pork. I felt like I jumped on an international flight to Italy and enjoyed such exceedingly full bodied, flavorful pork ribeye dish. . I cherish each mouthful. I delight in their use of micro greens visually and as sustenance. (Equally how they basil!) Thank you , Chef. I so appreciate such wonderful treasures from the herb garden. Exciting! Chef Joshua came around to each table to check on all the guests . And it absolutely was a thrill to meet him since he is responsible for nourishing our tummies tonight. I had the braised short ribs and they were amazing. The depth and flavor of the sauce was amazing. Went here for a work dinner with a large group. We sat up stairs in a beautiful dining area. The service we got was fantastic. Everyone was very complimentary of the food. This place is very expensive but I had a great experience here. read more

This is our 2nd time here and I was really hoping for better service this time. The food is good, the place is beautiful, and while our server was a bit older, so slower, he was lovely. However, we arrived a few minutes before our 8:30 reservation & no one was at the host desk. And nearly 10 min later (& after our reservation time) still no reception person. I went to politely ask a server if there was a host/ hostess .. she did not respond and just walked away. But she did go get the hostess from their chat circle .. she was extremely rude, put us in the worst table despite being nearly empty. I certainly unstated why! Our first time was similar .. hostess back then was rude, so we choose to sit at the bar instead of dealing with her & it took forever to get a drink & our food,. But the bartender was great so we thought we would try again. Sadly worse this time. We live 10 min from here & go out to dinner 2-3 times a week but this will be the last time here.if you value good service .. avoid at all costs! read more

Came on a Friday night on the early side with the kiddos. The kids menu food options were all $14. My kids got grilled cheese and buttered noodles which were run of the mill/decent. We all shared a charcuterie and cheese board which we enjoyed. It had three cheeses and three meats. One soft/creamy cheese which I liked the most. The other two were typical, non-special in my option.... But my husband liked them the most. The lobster ravioli had probably 10-12 large raviolis and a petite lobster tail. The ravioli was my favorite part of the meal. My husband got the shrimp and grits which he said were very good. I tried the grits which were delicious! They had a cheesy, creamy taste which were some awesome grits. The first cosmo was spot on but the second was very red and had too much lime. Service was a bit slow for it being 5 when we arrived. For the price I expected more but it was so-so. The bill with tax was over $200. Maybe not worth the price in my opinion. read more

The Gables is just that-- good but average. I will admit we sat at the bar and ordered food and though it was good, the flatbread wasn't really a flatbread because it was pretty thick... Also, the service was pretty slow and the prices are quite pricey. Overall, it's a nice spot but overall just "okay". read more

Terrible service. We were seated right away @5:15. It was not busy at all. The waiter introduces himself, we get some water & he disappears for maybe 10 minutes. He finally comes back and is ready to take our drink order. We again wait quite a while. The hosts ask if we have been taken care of - I tell her we have been waiting for drinks for a while. My 13 year old tells me she gave me "some serious side eye" as she walked away, not responding to me. Why did she ask if she only wanted a positive response? We splurge for a $14 glass of wine. We drink a lot of wine and it is clear it's a bottle that has been open a while as it has the vinegar taste. The aromas of the wine are not there. We get our food order in, the food comes quickly, it's decent. And we never see our waiter again. We were never able to order another glass of wine and the kids did not get soda refills. We didn't even get water refills until the end of our meal when another worker filled them. Horrible service. Another outstanding lunch at The Gables in Chadds Ford! The food presentation was unbelievable and the menu was creative with sooo many good choices. We were so excited about the food that we forgot to take pictures of everything. Fried Green Tomatoes, Roasted Artichokes, Chicken Salad on Croissant and the BEST Raspberry Sorbet ever! Can't wait to go back soon. Our Server, Michael was perfect too! ADDITIONAL NOTE: I am disappointed to see poor reviews for this wonderful restaurant based on a Mother's Day or Easter Sunday experience. We wanted a semi-late night dinner, and booked table online, they called us and let us know they weren't open that late but if we could come earlier, they'd be happy to serve us. We were able to come, and they still had bunch of tables so we weren't keeping them open late. There is a lot of parking, and has a nice, upscale ambiance. My friend started with the fried green tomatoes appetizer which was nicely presented with a big dollop of burrata cheese. I wanted something light and went with the caprese salad, which came with big slices of mozzarella and tomato and was a delicious but filling meal. My friend had a Margherita flatbread which was a large portion for one person but a good meal. We were too full for dessert, but we saw some go by that looked good. The service was good. It was a little on the expensive side, but this would make for a great date place or just an enjoyable night out with friends. read more

Website says open to 10:00. We show up at 8:45 on a Friday night. The bartender looked at us like the doors were locked and we got in. We asked if we could have dinner and she went into the kitchen. Then they all came out and looked at us. We were told we could sit down, because of their weird behavior, I asked again if we could have dinner. She said yes, but only salads. So if I didn't ask, we would have been seated and ordered a drinks then told we could have a salad but that's it. If your website says 10:00, then honor it. It's Friday night and we live close and are trying to go to the local businesses. The week before, we were seated at the same time in a Thursday night with a very friendly bartender. He served us a full meal and we had a great time. Not consistent and next time we won't even bother stopping at Gables. read more

Wow - we've gone here a few times for lunch, but last night we tried dinner and how disappointing. I had the crab cakes = don't order it if you go. The carb cakes were so buttery you couldn't taste the crab, the rice was undercooked and the spinach must have be sautéed in straight up salt. For $38.00 - I expect more. My wife and a pasta dish which she didn't care for, a bit heavy handed with the sauce. Our friends had the clams, flatbread, and a salad = which they liked, but even I can toss a salad and make a flatbread. That doesn't take a great deal of skill. The wait staff seemed nice enough but unsure of how things were made. The Gables is a cool venue but the food is horrible, and the place is very loud so it's difficult to hear your company. From start to finish this place was awesome! Don't let the previous reviews turn you away. The wait staff was very pleasant and prompt. The food was incredible too! We probably waited only 15min, 20 tops for our food to come out. It was clear everything was made to order and the taste reflected that!! I personally had the gables pappardelle - the pesto was the perfect combo of oil forward but almost tasting creamy and rich. It was fantastic. And the atmosphere of the restaurant was stunning. As far as the holiday , Mother's Day experience, disappointment, they were out of several items we requested for dinner, 1/2 ended up just eating appetizers, not very family friendly, no accommodation for infants in the rest room, and anyone that has Brent here before, the back area that has a grotto wall which we would thinks was historical is gone. We had a great experience coming here for dinner! The ambience was lovely and we're excited to come when the weather is warmer and sit outside. Our server was very friendly and helpful with the menu as we were between a few different options and we appreciated her insight. We ordered the fried green tomatoes to start, along with the fig and prosciutto flatbread. Both were delicious but the tomatoes did need a little salt. We also split the Caesar salad and it was very good. For our entrees, I had the sweet corn gnocchi with shrimp and it was perfection. Incredibly flavorful with some of the most succulent shrimp I've ever had. My husband got the short rib and practically licked his plate! The meat was incredibly tender and the dish was so comforting. We got the chocolate banana cake for dessert and it was phenomenal. The perfect balance of decadent and light flavors. Now, the drinks. Oh my goodness. Just get them all, you can't go wrong! The salted caramel espresso martini was absolutely insane and I would come back just for that. But the pomegranate martini went down like juice! It was ok, not great. They open at 11am on Sundays & we had a reservation for 6 adults & 4 kids. We were seated promptly. Ordered our food. It came out in 2's and 3's, with enough time between trips for the first-served food to get cold. My daughter ordered the Avocado Toast with the eggs hard cooked, not soft as listed on the menu. They were served with runny yolks and the waitress took it back. I had to go find our waitress to ask if she forgot it, because most of us had finished our meal and it still wasn't served. It finally came out and was ok. As she served it, she cleared the rest of our finished meals. She deducted the cost of that entree off the check, but I would have preferred it be served as requested the first time or at least, hastily rectified. Won't go back. read more

We visited the Gables after a day at Longwood Gardens with my family and their in-laws visiting from Turkey. There were 8 in the party and they were able to seat us with no issues. The server, Cheyenne, was amazing and very patient as translation was needed for some in the party. The food was amazing and served in a timely manner so as to enjoy the meal and not be in a rush. Cheyenne was excellent with timing of service as we also had some younger children in the party. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The meals served were a halibut special, a seafood pasta special and a steak special with appetizers of a cheese board and a roasted vegetable board. All were excellent. We had reservations for 7:00, at first the hostess could not find the reservation , but finally did and we were told would be a little while they needed to clear some tables . We waited at the bar and was told they overbooked , and could have a seat in the corner of the bar area . I'm not sure if ownership is just so hands off and have no idea what is going, or if management is just so incompetent either way it is not acceptable . There are other restaurants in the area that know how book reservations and keep a schedule . If there was an option for no star , they would have earned it , one star is being generous . read more

Dined in for lunch on a Tuesday, which was the second time I have been to this establishment. The first was a wine tasting event a few months ago under the tent out back. The atmosphere is wonderful, inside and out, but I was glad to be indoors on Tuesday with the chilly weather lately. Started with the musts room soup which was excellent and also chowed on a flat bread the was equal to the soup. Followed our appetizers with a cheese board before ordering shrimp and grits for an entree. Our server was warm, welcoming an efficient. Food came out very timely and was delicious. My son-in-law and I had a lovely dinner here. I made a reservation two hours before and they squeezed us in. The wait staff was lovely. One thing I love about this restaurant is they employ the young high school students to bust tables and fill water, which most restaurants don't do. From a tourists POV, I could tell they support the community. The waitress we had was lovely, she was well presented and she was attentive. We had. Fantastic cheeseboard of local cheeses from farms around the area. The menu had a list of all the suppliers they use for the restaurant. Everything was exceptional and a meal like we had would have cost $1,000 easily in New York but here, the pricing was phenomenal and I left full and ready for bed. The outdoor patio was fully encompassed by a large white tent and surrounded with old stone walls from a previous dwelling now turned patio with flowers and plants growing the meandering nooks of the stones. We sat underneath a pergola of ivy draping over us and had a heater all to ourselves. It was the loveliest restaurant with a very friendly feeling and I do hope to return on my next trip. read more

Let me preface this review by saying that we have thoroughly enjoyed The Gables many times in the past. Today was a joke! We went for Mother's Day Brunch after making our reservation well ahead of the day. When we arrived at 11:15, the lot was packed. We got to the hostess stand and were seated right away. The brunch was a buffet and as we were seated, the people in line waiting to get to the buffet stretched the entire length of the restaurant, back and through the tent that they put up during COVID. As we sat at our table for 10n minutes waiting for the waitress, the line didn't move. I would guess that it took close to an hour just to get thru the buffet line one time. We finally got up and left. It is clear that The Gables could care less about the the dining experience of all there to celebrate Mother's Day and only cared about one thing...making $45/person! Came in for lunch with my wife, and step mother and her boyfriend. We were seated quickly and service was attentive. We ordered a few different flatbread pizzas, fried green tomatoes, meatball sandwich, and short rib tacos. The flatbread pizzas were good, but not amazing but everything else was fantastic. Especially the fried green tomatoes and short rib tacos. We were all too full for dessert . Would recommend for sure but I'd say to steer away from the flatbreads in lieu of a different entree. read more

I've been before but now as my first trip back to restaurants after quarantine... it was AMAZING! Our waiter was the sweetest and the food was to die for. I ordered the scallops and they were amazing. The bourbon pecan pie was great and they wrote happy birthday still for my mom! They have the outside set up so well for distancing. ***UPDATE*** This is our fourth time here and as always the servers are very pleasant and professional. However there have been changes as it relates to presentation and portion. First thing, the coffee was cold and had been sitting a while based on the taste. My mother really enjoyed the shrimp and grits this was her fourth time. On this occasion it was presented much differently and it was a much smaller serving. I had the crab cake sandwich, I HATED IT! I ate a quarter of it and did not eat the rest of it or take it home!!! The slaw was ok but not on the top of the crab cake! The slaw made the crab cake soft and fall apart because it was too mushy. Slaw and sauce falling out the front, back and sides of the sandwich I mean everywhere. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and it would be a great value if you like what you order. I would like it if they had a brunch menu on Saturday or expanded their lunch options. I was disappointed with my experience and it may be time to move on! read more

4 of us had Sunday brunch. The menu looked amazing. We couldn't decide what to get every dish goin by us looked so good. Well looks are certainly deceiving. My wife and I have dined at the Gables a few times over the years and aside from one uncharacteristically poor Easter bunch, it's always been a great experience. The wine list is a highlight, well curated all around - but especially the reds - and the menu never fails to disappoint. I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy and my wife has a bit of a more evolved palette and we're both always deliberating between multiples items per course. The ambiance here is unique as the building is old and beautiful and full of character with every area having it's own vibe. NOTE: This is an update of a previous 2-star review which reflected a poor experience. Subsequent positive visits and the responsiveness of management to the aforementioned issue have made me change my opinion and update my rating of The Gables. read more

We had a reservation for the Thanksgiving dinner buffet. The hostess was unattentive when we arrived. Many guests with reservations were waiting with no update from the hostess . The food clearly looked liked it was sitting out for days for the buffet. We had to tell the staff to refill as no one was checking the buffet stations. They ran out of many of the menu items for a traditional thanksgiving dinner. The food area was very dirty, no one had wiped up or cleaned. All the soda was flat, we had to tell the staff and we were provided can sodas. Very disappointing as the buffett was $60.00 a person and they charged an additional $49.00 for gratuity. This was a self serve buffet. That additional fee was not listed anyway on the menu or the website. That was an outrageous fee for a party of 4 read more
