My boyfriend got the beef stroganoff, worst he's ever had, not even made with egg noodles. Looked like it was made with gravy. Marie calendars microwave Swedish meatballs is a hundred times better. I got the halibut, $42... it tasted like they cooked a frozen filet from the bait shop across the street. So dry, it was difficult to swallow. Sounds dramatic but seriously it was so bad. Went during a slow time of year (early October) just after visiting Hearst Castle. The food selection is pretty much standard American fare with great service from wait staff with personality...what a concept! Lunch hit the spot. We came here for dinner and breakfast while staying in San Simeon. Dinner was really good. We ordered the broiled salmon and the BBQ burger with onion rings. Both dishes were very flavorful, fresh, and filling. The salmon - glazed over with a delicious coat of garlic butter - was perfectly tender. Sadly, we waited a really long time to be seated and then to get food. Breakfast was also very good! We got our food much faster this time. We ordered the Garden omelette with country potatoes and the Denver omelette with hash browns. Both were super delicious and filling. The only downside was that I asked for coffee with oat milk but was given regular cow's milk instead. Wasn't too happy about that, but I'll let it pass since the omelette was just that good. On New Year's Day. we stopped here for breakfast. On the way up to ragged point to take in the view. Breakfast was great and there are many different options. Available to select from. Everything was served hot and right from the kitchen. Staff is great and the restaurant has good.acoustic so you were able to chat with other guests. There is a view of the ocean out of the windows on one side of the restaurant. Yes, I recommend this as a good place to stop for breakfast or lunch as you were going along, Highway one and either direction. read more

We ate at this restaurant because we stayed at the hotel. We ate there three times, two dinners and one breakfast and our experience was mixed. The first night the service was good, the food was good and the portions were good sized. We had no complaints that night and decided to have breakfast there the following morning. The following morning we had the exact opposite experience. It started with the host who made it clear that he did not want to be there. We were seated, we decided what we wanted for breakfast and our waitress took our order and then disappeared. There were just a few tables in the restaurant and noticed that the table seated after us had their food. I commented that their waitress was smart, she was staying out on the floor so that she could keep an eye on her tables, refilling their coffee and water. Our food arrived, our coffee was refilled and the check was dropped off and that was the last we saw of our waitress. I had to find the host who again made it clear he did not want to be there, to pay the bill. We had dinner at the Cavalier restaurant that night and we found the service to be similar to the first time we dined there. That night, I ordered Chicken Wings and they were not good, I noticed that more than half of the wings/drumsticks, had broken bones. I wondered if they had thrown boxes around in back or if this was how they arrived. Overall, if I wasn't staying at the hotel, I am not sure I would go back there. read more

Was looking for a light meal but there aren't a lot of options in San Simon. Started looking at menus online and noticed that the Cavalier had a children's menu. So I ordered a kid's burger and fries. When the gal handed me my order I could tell that the meal had some heft. When I got back to the hotel, I saw that it was indeed a regular size burger, the only kid thing about it was that it was plain. When they serve you a Hearst patty, that's not such a bad thing. I never like giving bad reviews to any establishment unless treated bad. Breakfast at this restaurant. Order two omelette one Ham & Cheese and other Denver Omelette. Both had the same issues. First under seasoned on the omelette and potatoes. Denver Omelette hard eggs maybe over beaten eggs. Cheese was just a blob on one side of omelette. The veggie peppers hard raw like.The potatoes hash brown on one and home fries on the other no seasoning at all. Home fries hard not done all the way. We came here for take out over the weekend. We didn't have to wait long for a server to come take out to go order. We were told 10-15 mins so went to the back of the restaurant/hotel with beautiful ocean views. There were many gophers digging holes and poking their heads out. There were also gigantic life size checkers and chess boards to play with. Time just flew and we went back 30 mins later and the food was being packaged. Typical seaside American food that serves seafood, steaks, pastas, soups, fish & chips, etc. Our order consists of: Key Lime Pie, Cup of Clam Chowder, the Ribeye Steak (1lb), and the Seafood Diablo pasta. Food was fresh and had good flavors. The steak was a big one..1 LB but my hubby gobbled it down. It was so juicy!! The seafood diablo was not my favorite. The smallest shrimp and scallops. Inflation is taking a toll on restaurant food too, not the first place I tried recently with small amounts of seafood. Clams were normal size and plentiful. Came with bow tie pasta but not a fan of the sour house made marinara sauce. Cavalier has plenty of indoor seating too with ocean views. Above them is their hotel. Absolutely Appalling Experience - Avoid at All Costs If I could give negative stars, I would. My family and I had dinner at The Cavalier in San Simeon, and it was hands down one of the most bizarre and disrespectful dining experiences we've ever had. We were seated, ordered our meals, and then... our server vanished. No drink refills, no check-in, and certainly no chance to order the dessert we specifically told him we wanted. After waiting, I flagged down a busboy to ask if he could send our server over. Not only did he say the waiter was "too busy" to help us -- he didn't even offer to assist. Instead, he slapped down our check and said, "Your waiter told me to give you this." No drinks. No dessert. No care. When I asked for drinks and dessert, the busboy raised his voice at us. Yes, a grown man yelling at guests trying to order coffee and dessert. He then started being rude to my mother. Classy. We flagged down the hostess, who seemed just as annoyed that we were still expecting basic service. She eventually brought cold coffee and a colder attitude. When I said we couldn't believe how we were being treated, her excuse? "It's been a long night." Oh, poor you -- try being the paying customer getting ignored, insulted, and iced out. We asked if something could be comped due to the outright hostility. She said "maybe," walked away, and never came back. As we approached the host stand to leave, our original waiter finally reappeared -- mocking us as we walked out, calling us names under his breath like a petulant teenager. The hostess told us, "Just leave. Don't come back." No problem. We'll never be back. And we'll be warning everyone else to steer clear of this train wreck disguised as a restaurant. Terrible service, rude staff, and zero accountability. Do better, Cavalier -- or just close your doors. read more

Ate Breakfast here a few times during the week of April 21 after a local Sheriff's Deputy taking a break in our hotel parking lot mentioned they were worth trying. Staff was very friendly and attentive. My wife loved the Baileys French Toast, my father in law seemed to like the chicken fried steak,, and I ended up really enjoying the Cajun Omelet more than one day. Restaurant was clean. The only decent food in San Simeon, albeit pricey. If you get reservations, you can secure a table with an ocean view. The BBQ burger comes on a black brioche bun and is fantastic, just as the fish and chips. They also have breakfast starting at 7 AM and are located in the parking lot of a hotel. The serve Hearst Ranch beef and the service is good, although they can get quite busy and don't have a large seating area. They do takeaway orders by phone. No outside seating, but they have a full cocktail menu. Sadly, they have no draft beer and only serve a few things in bottles. They should setup a small outdoor eating area and get a draft beer system; it'd give the customers real choice, allow for great craft beer and save them money. The biggest problem this place has is that it's the best amongst a number of crappy eateries and hotels whom only exist for Hearst Castle tourism, so, they have no impetus to improve. Other than this place, the only other eateries worth considering are in nearby Cambria. read more

The drinks took forever, we had to eventually ask for our order to be taken, after seeing our waitress approach every other table around us. The food came out lukewarm, I asked for a refill for my coffee and never got one, then I had to ask twice for our tab after trying to be patient, I eventually had to flag down our waitress that seemed to forget we had asked for it. We ordered a cup of the clam chowder and the potstickers. Both were amazing. The potstickers sauce was really good. For entrees we ordered fish and chips and the BLTA. The fish and chips were a bit small but hearty and crispy. We ordered onion rings instead of fries and those were perfect. Might be because we came here over Thanksgiving holidays, but food was flat out not good, service subpar, and price not worth it for what you get. Came here for dinner and several of us ordered clam chowder. The chowder was REALLY burnt and tasted awful. Funny how we all drank a spoonful and all had the disgusted expression. When we informed the waiter, he started explaining it's because the fire, likely too high, was kept on throughout the day and that's why the chowder was burnt. Hate to say this, but if you know that's the issue, why are you serving this to the customers? Not even an apology serving subpar food, but was certainly keen to explain/defend, so was very disappointed in the service. I should have listened to my gut and walked out but instead we stayed and my gut HATES me for it since I got food poisoning most likely from the wings that were almost definitely not cooked properly, couldn't say it was from the burger bc that was a hardened piece of leather completely overdone that I couldn't even eat.
