This place is a real gem and a must stay if you're going to Hearst Castle. The resort consists of two properties and has two swimming pools, a jacuzzi and beach access. There's also a walking path with signs explaining the marine animals that can be seen from various vantage points. There's coffee, refrigerator and a microwave in the room and fresh brewed coffee at the checkin desk. If you're staying at the Sands by the Sea property checkin at the Cavalier desk. The location is minutes from the Elephant Seal sanctuary, downtown Cambria, and Hearst Castle.

The carpets were dirty and the windows were dusty. Very disappointed it did not look like in the pictures when we did our reservation.

Roxy at the front desk was very friendly, welcoming, & professional- loved her kind spirit and reassuring us how we are in a safe area. Yummy homemade chocolate chip cookies given at ck-in. The room she got us was perfect as I am handicap with walking disability. Clear ocean view, parked next to room on 1st floor. Roxy was right the cold wind died out by close to sunset which was perfect for the fire pits to roast marshmallows. And Perfect on beach location, with many activities. Our room was clean and spacious. Price was very reasonable for location. We are definitely returning. Loved listening to the ocean waves all night long.

This is NOT an "unobstructed view"!

When you pay and ask for a full ocean view you should get it. Don't come here they don't care about you. We won't be coming back here. Oh and if you have perks because of your credit card you better tell them they won't offer it.

Maybe a bit pricey but the view is unbeatable! The room was comfortable and the staff at the front desk is very sweet and helpful, marking everything on a physical map and answering all our questions. The attached breach area is really cool, it's huge, and many different things to enjoy : a cabin, beach, grass, rocks, bonfires, stars. It was fun just waking around and exploring. However the bonfires were very crowded at night. Free coffee is nice though no free breakfast. We went to the attached restaurant for breakfast and it was amazing but also so much food we slipped lunch. I tried to go to the gym in the morning but it only opens at 9... So I watched the beautiful sunrise instead.

If you are looking for something for dinner this is the spot for a takeout! We always get there ribeye 16 oz with finger potatoes and asparagus for $48.99 to go and get it rare so we can finish at medium rare back in our room that has a kitchen in it if you come across a hotel that gives you one ! You can feed two people on this meal

Updated review- may 2025 My husband and I have been coming here with our pets for over 15 years. We love it. It's very relaxing. The rooms are so awesome with fireplaces inside with a view of the ocean. Our dogs love the grass and plenty of room to run around. We love the fire pits and the games outside . This is a wonderful vacation spot.

The view is 5 stars.. the (resort) is 2 stars Needs updating and cleaning. The rooms were like a old motel 6. Old furniture and dirty walls and drapes. A small table but had no chairs to sit around it. Cable tv was from 1980 fuzzy picture and very limited channels. It's up to you now if you want to stay there but you have been warned.

This was a great experience for us. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The view is fantastic and so is the weather. The location is perfect to enjoy the coast, and there are lots of things to do. The restaurant is nearby, and it is of high quality. There is plenty of parking as well as easy beach access. They do firepits at night, and the atmosphere is spacious and relaxed. The rooms are comfortable and the beds are comfortable and clean. It does get warm in the middle of the night, and the A/C doesn't work, but they do keep a fan in the closet which helps. We kept the windows open, but not much of a cross breeze while sleeping. Overall a great experience.

I arrived in the evening after traveling all day, and I was exhausted. The clerk immediately gave me the layout of the resort with a map and provided me with a key card and keys to my mini refrigerator with snacks and drinks. Upon entering the room, I did my standard black light to search for critters and stains on the furniture. I found no major issues. Although, I did find several of the windows weren't locked; so please don't overlook the windows. Next, the shower had a heat lamp, which was an added plus when exiting the shower. Many hotels used to have them; however, they're not as frequent anymore. After checking into my room, I noticed a tour bus pulling in. Apparently, they had been sightseeing all day and were back for the evening. The next morning, as I was leaving for work, I noticed a lot of guests had dogs. I'd guess two out of five guests had them. Although I suffer from dog dander allergies, I had no issues, and my room didn't have a pet odor. I've been to hotels with funky dog odors. Next, someone's review mentioned dirty carpets. I had zero issues, but the grounds are heavily traveled, thus the thin grassy area, which is likely a fall/winter issue. Nevertheless, it is the guests' responsibility to wipe their shoes off before walking into the rooms. Seriously, what do you do at your home? They also have a pool, walking paths, massive checkers and chess board games, and three outside firepits surrounded by chairs. I noticed a lot of holes in the ground made by ground squirrels. Although I'm not familiar with the type of squirrel, I couldn't help but notice the abundance of holes--I mean, there were more than the dimples on a golf ball. Two takeaways: stay on the paths, and don't feed them, or they'll multiply like gremlins! Finally, as others have mentioned, the views are gorgeous. If you propel down to the beach area, you must see the sunsets.

There are some amazing positives about this in. Location Location Location. Sitting up fron the beach you can sit on the cliff or walk down the relatively easy trail down to the beach just be careful. Up top you can play chess and checkers. There are 2 fireplaces they light at dusk bring your own marshmallows. Free Parking which is nice considering the room rate. Mini bar in the room with high but not outrageous prices ($6 for a small bottle of wine). Ice by the pool. There are 2 heated pools and one hot tub. There is a decent restaurant on the property. The cons we couldn't get the thermostat to kick on. For the price I paid I had a sliver of ocean view. This place gets packed with families and dogs. Overall a good experience. Everything super clean.

They are kind and receptive. They all want improvement. Hopefully the ones with the money will come through! Except for rain, our entire visit was lovely.

Cavalier Oceanfront Resort has a great view of the sunset. All rooms provide binoculars to see the beautiful view. This hotel has a swimming pool and a jacuzzi. There is also a real wood fire that is lit every night near the beach, just outside the hotel. So you can sit around the fire and relax. Although the weather forecast was not good, we were fortunate enough that during our stay that we were able to see a spectacular sunset. I would recommend it when traveling through San Simeon or Cambria. Because the location is good for hiking and seal or sea lion watching. Moreover, a general store and some restaurants are nearby. And a gift shop and a post office are only one minute away from the rooms. Don't miss out on the restaurant next door as it has the most delicious French toast for breakfast.

I called multiple times over two days to confirm we were bringing our dog and never got an answer. you do have to leave a voicemail and they will return call. There is no AC unit, which may be an issue for some guests. especially for hotter days and the room does not have cross wind/circulating windows, Also, the booking photos show a sliding glass door to the beach (Hotel.com needs to update photos), but the hotel is actually across the street. Our window faced the water, but it's not a direct walk-out beach property. Now for the positives, the staff (all of them) were amazing. The rooms are bungalow-style and very clean and spacious. The hotel is pet-friendly $100 fee, and check-in/check-out was easy. The check-in area feels cozy and homey, with couches, chairs, books, and games available. They offer beer, wine, adult beverages (Adult options for your coffee), plus a kitchen and outdoor fireplace sitting area. The hotel is directly across the street from the beach, about a 2-min walk to the water. The room was large and well-stocked with a mini fridge (fees may apply), huge comforters, bathrobes, slippers, a fan, fireplace, shower supplies such as body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, and a sitting chair. There are many additional amenities available for a fee in the room and in their lobby area. In the morning, they deliver a basket with pastries croissants, cinnamon rolls, coffee, orange juice, and champagne, a really nice touch. They also have bikes you can use and go bike riding, corn hole games, picnic benches, There's also an ice maker on-site. Parking spaces are small, so be cautious if you have a lifted truck or wide rims. The area itself is very nice. The hotels along the coastline are set up similarly, facing north and south, so most have somewhat obstructed or no ocean views or direct walk-on beach access. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place, Hotel cost wasn't too bad but remember all the hotels in this area do not have walk out beach rooms. Area is very quiet, relaxing, and peaceful, and EVERYONE is pet friendly even with a pitbull breed. Our kids had a blast in the ocean and were able to play board games eat ice cream and enjoy the scenery. there are several benches along the walk path in case you need to sit down and relax. There is small community town about 15min tops. several restaurants and shopping. old town style, very homey. so, if you're looking for a disconnect type of vacation, no party scene, just want peaceful and relaxation, this is the place. I will attach pictures and I do apologize because these were at the end of the trip and not when we first arrived. so, excuse the beds. The hotel was very clean and have hardwood floors.

Had a room with a king bed and fireplace. It was so cute and cozy. I will say all of these places down here are Basically boutique motels so some of the things, like the shower drain and door, and window sills could be newer, but everything was clean and cute! The theming is even better in person and the grounds are soo nice. We walked around the other hotels in the area and this one is by far the best in terms of the grounds! If you have a dog, this is the place!!! We can't wait to come back! The Cow Tipper was good for breakfast too, dog friendly once again! We loved the trails right across the street! In terms of being close to the water and cliffs you really can't beat the location on this! Just a couple smalls things to note: The fireplaces outside don't get too hot outside so pack blankets if you plan to hang out! Still fun and cozy! Cambria is way colder than you think it will be!! The bed in our room didn't have a red comforter on it, and my parents room did, I thought it was because we had a dog as a guest but after leaving I see pictures of comforters and dogs in the rooms so I'm not really sure why we didn't get one? When we got there, there was blood stains on the white sheets (just looked stained not fresh blood/dirty) and the girl on the phone was really weird about getting us new sheets and kept saying it's rust not blood but she never even came up to see it...either way housekeeping staff came by a couple minutes later and were very helpful and apologetic unlike her! The morning staff, a young man was very helpful! Someone keeps smoking weed by the fires and he handled it was such haste! It was refreshing! Thank you everyone! We will be back!

We had stayed here before and were really looking forward to the same peaceful experience. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case this time. When we arrived, there was a wedding set up about 20 feet from our room. The music was extremely loud, and we were told it would continue until 10pm. The huge easy up stayed all weekend. It blocked our entire view of anything from our hotel window. That sucked, especially considering we chose this room for its privacy and quiet. We brought this up to the front desk, and while the staff member was polite(ish), he only offered a 7% discount, which felt pretty dismissive given the situation.  It's really disappointing because we know this hotel can offer a great experience, we've stayed before. But this time, it felt like they didn't care about the guests because the wedding was going to bring in more money. If you're considering staying here for a quiet getaway, I'd strongly recommend confirming there are no events happening near your room. We suggest staying at White Water or El Colibri instead!

The entrance of the hotel was very promising, but it all came down with the experience that followed. We were standing at the desk for 25 mins, no one came to help us check in. In those 25 mins we kept calling, and we could hear the phone ring, but no one answered. From the same room the receptionist came out after half an hour. He had a foul smell coming from that room, although I dont want to comment on what the smell was. After we were provided the room, the room was dirty, there were soiled towels in the bathroom, bedsheets were soiled, and not replaced. When we mentioned this to the receptionist, he provided a different room on the same floor. The room was facing the parking lot, had ONLY A CEILING FAN, A TABLE FAN, AND NO AIR CONDITIONING. One of the bulbs in the new room was not working either, it was flickering the whole time. The sofa was dirty, and stained, and I didnt feel comfortable using it anyways. The only positive of the room was the pressure of the shower, but the spray modes were not working. Overall a very poor experience.
