Location, location, location. This property has seen better days. These units don't have air conditioning so we had to keep the slider open all night to get air flow. Nice to listen to the waves crash on the beach, but really, no air conditioning. Room does have a fireplace, we didn't need it. Bed was very comfortable, bathroom clean and spacious. Large safe for valuables. Dated furniture, TV reception pretty bad. Can't remember when I have seen such poor snowy images. Shower.... It's missing a shower head and management thought a hand spray was a good idea. Not so much. Drapes are moth eaten and need to be replaced. The wet bar..... snacks are in a drawer above the wet bar fridge so all the snacks are hot, I mean really warm. There is so much space in the room, there is plenty of room for a surface for snacks and stuff to be displayed. Breakfast at the restaurant was atrocious. Country potatoes were not cooked and tasted gross, bacon was particularly cooked then microwave to reheat, raw and chewy, eggs were perfect, English muffins were chewy. For the price, we will look for other accommodations next time in town. read more

This is our 2nd time staying at this property. By far, its strong point is the location which is ocean front. We paid a premium for a Terrace room which is just feet away from the bluff overlooking the water. While the room was clean and the staff extremely pleasant, the property is tired and in need of significant upgrade. The bed was comfortable but the chairs in the room were broken down and the upholstery filthy. With such a view and a fireplace, at the price point, it would be expected to comfortably sit and relax. The exterior of the room (173) was dark (if not frightening) and the adjacent storage/maintenance closets were poorly maintained. We revisited based on memories of a previous stay and experience. Sadly, we will not return as there are better options; but, this could be a stellar experience. read more

READ the reviews before you spend your money. I really wanted to like this place. The room was nice and the view almost made it worth the price. But then the ugly. Booked 2 adults, premium King oceanfront room. In the room, there was one shampoo, one lotion. No conditioner and NO SOAP. I asked the front desk and was told that all the other buildings had been updated with the large, multi use bottles but the top tier, premium rooms had not. She then told me they were using "what they had left." So I guess for the crazy price of over $300 a night, expecting to was my hands after using the restroom is too much to ask? I drove all the way back to SLO to hit the target just for my own conditioner and soap (ended up buying shampoo too just because I didn't know how long that one, tiny bottle had been sitting in the bottom of some box somewhere). Nothing too special but the location. The rooms were ok, a little smoky smelling if you get a fireplace. The vending machine was empty forcing one to use their honor bar. They did provide robes which were soft and comfortable. If you like sitting on a deck watching the waves and relaxing, this is the place for you. read more

We went here for my husband's birthday. Our room was cozy and clean, with a fireplace. But it was over the laundromat so we would often hear the whirring of the machines downstairs. That was really annoying. The hotel is too pricey ($300) to have a subpar room over a laundromat that always has its doors wide open. This building should just remain a storage and staff facility. We liked the proximity to the beach but the sand wasn't great for playing. My daughter loves swimming but the pool was too cold. The scenery was beautiful. The restaurant has a good menu and nice wait staff. We liked the fire pits but it was too windy to enjoy. There isn't much to do nearby. On the first night, our neighbor has a loud dog. They also had a very loud phone call early in the morning. The walls are paper thin so we can hear everything. Overall, I wouldn't come back. read more

This hotel is absolutely gorgeous. We had a room with a fireplace (includes free logs!) and balcony with a breathtaking view of the ocean. It was hands down one of the best hotels I've stayed at, just because of that view! The rocking chairs weren't the most comfortable and could definitely use some padding, but that didn't stop us from relaxing on the balcony listening to the waves crashing. The only downside was our room was just above the pool, so we rather than peace and quiet, we got to listen to a bunch of kids yelling and screaming until the pool closed. We will most definitely be staying here again, it is worth the price! read more

Pictures of this hotel are deceiving. Basically you are paying for view only. Rooms are run down and look like 3rd rate motel rooms. You expect that at least the TVs will work. We're told that it was cable service's fault when in actuality is the connection of cable to tv. Loose and there were no extra cable to replace it with. We really should have been given a credit but wasn't worth our energy. Groundkeeper tried to fix and said he'd talk to front desk to get us a credit. Didn't happen. Grounds keepers were the only ones helpful. Front desk wasn't helpful at all!! Hot tub disgusting. Smelled stinky and had dirty foam layer. No towels at poolside. Had to go on search! Other reviews mention high prices but believe me when I say that the prices are more than reasonable for the location and compared to what I paid, $425, for a room in San Luis Obisbo where I had a nightmare experience with both guests and inhospitable staff. Read my earlier review of this "boutique" inn. Back to the Cavalier: it was an absolute joy to experience staying in room 245 and the amazing staff who showed such hospitality, from the servers in the restaurant to the Front Desk team, Fabby and Aymee. It was such a delight to overnight at the Cavalier and we will make a point of staying longer when we return to CA. I appreciated the small touches of comfort in the rooms, from fluffy robes, a bar fridge, room safe, luggage racks and decent toiletries to the wood-burning fireplace. The views were spectacular. The food at the restaurant was very good and well presented. Nothing to complain about so 5 stars! read more

Room was very dated and desk chair in room was *very* badly worn out, ready for the garbage heap. Should be embarrassing to management. Quality of furnishings very bad and every piece was worn out. I've seen better garage sale furniture. Every piece was incredibly cheap, scratched, worn and edges were chipped. Apparently 'cleaning' staff are awful since we found candy wrappers left behind, tucked into one of the main lighting fixtures in plain view. I wish there was a between score! I would give this 3.5 to 4..... Another reviewer mentioned that you are not paying for the room, but for the amazing view and they were absolutely right. We stayed in a standard room and were amazed at how close to the water we were. They have these really cool binoculars that they will let you borrow, and there are three tower viewer binoculars that are on site. The rooms are older and again, as one reviewer mentioned, smelled of smoke, even with the door and windows open for the whole trip. The hotel staff is incredibly nice and friendly and they provide coffee in the office in case you do not want to wake up your spouse with the in-room Keruig. The restaurant at the hotel is AWESOME. Not just a "hotel restaurant", the food is great and the staff is so kind and accommodating. The bar is stocked, but you can only order what is on the menu or simple drinks like Jack and Coke. Never fear, you have a fully well stocked ( like Vegas level variety!) mini bar in your room. The three fire pits, lounge chairs, benches and games that they lay out (extra large chess, checkers and Tik Tac Toe) really make it a welcoming place to be...I cannot wait to come back. read more

Tried using the fire place but the material provided would not start. Then the room smelled like smoke the rest of the time we were there. Curtains had wholes in them backside of the curtains looks filthy. Chairs in room had holes in them and were filthy. Looked like they have not been cleaned in years. Fridge did not work. Bathtub would not seal to be able to take a bath. Key broke off in mini bar fridge. When we checked out staff didn't seem to care. I would not stay here again. My partner and I have been here twice to celebrate our anniversary and I think it's a fantastic getaway spot, for families and especially for romantic occasions. The first time we went was November 2020 so times were different back then, but we still had a great time. Our most recent trip was November 2023 so I feel like we got to experience the resort to its full potential this time. The young woman who checked us in was very pleasant and informative. Our room was clean although the fireplace does leave a smoky odor in the room. But not a huge deal. We got a deluxe king with an ocean view and it was such a treat. The view from the room is incredible, with chairs both indoors and out on the patio to enjoy it from. There was a minibar in the room that I feel could've been stocked more but we did enjoy it. We ordered room service twice and the service was fast and the delivery guy was friendly. They have two pools but only 1 jacuzzi. Both nights we went to the jacuzzi it was extremely dark which I found odd. They could really use some lights down there, and there were no towels that we could see in the area so we had to use our room towels. But we did enjoy our time down there. As a plant based eater I really appreciated the vegan options at their restaurant. We had a pretty good experience there for dinner and breakfast. I do love the location of the resort - just minutes away from Hearst Castle, wineries, elephant seal viewing area, hikes and more. Cambria is a short drive away where we enjoyed Moonstone Beach, and the Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill was fantastic. Also only 30 minutes away from Morro Bay. San Simeon is a very quaint town, with really only hotels surrounding you, but it makes for a quiet and peaceful vacation, and again there is plenty to do in the area if you choose to venture out. We plan on coming back for sure. read more

This hotel isn't flashy or overtly luxurious, but it is clean and actually very nice when you look at the details. The rooms are well kept and clean. The staff was very nice and helpful. The rooms have some very nice features like a fireplace which they pre-prepare for easy lighting, digital-controlled radiant heating system (which works shockingly well by the way), and it has surprisingly nice toilet paper. Yes, toilet paper. This place has nicer toilet paper than most hotels I've been to! Then when you factor in the location, which is stunning, this hotel becomes pretty desirable. read more

MAKE SURE you make a reservation! We were staying in Best Western Cavalier and they told us about their "restaurant". We walked over to make a reservation for 7pm. At 7pm, it was packed and there was a long line, but since we had a reservation, we already had a table waiting for us! YAY. So there really isn't too much to eat in San Simeon. Not lying. There's a city 5 minutes south that you can get more food at, so you can totally eat there and see if you can get anything else. Came here for dinner and breakfast of the 1 day we were there. Dinner:Tri Tip Wrap: Turkey, bacon, greens, tomatos, avocados Feta cheese and ranch dressing in a spinach tortilla. Tri tip was a little bit harder to chew but everything else was flavored nicely. Your mouth had a great explosion of food that would be better than you expected at a random hotel restaurant in San Simeon. It was good in the fact that there was a lot of ingredients in the middle, but (ofc) was dry cuz tortilla. Breakfast: Fisherman's Omellete- shrimp, crab, mushrooms, green onion, jack cheese with Hollandise sauce. I suggest the Denver one though cuz ham, but this one wasn't that bad. You could get a slice of toast (normal slice of toast) with potatoes on the side (hash browns). The shrimp- they didn't hold back. There were a lot of ingredients here too, and a lot of cheese (yay for me!). They did have coffee and they charged us, when the person asked coffee? We were fools and got coffee and got charged $1.50 (i believe), when coffee is free just next door in the hotel lobby..... Why only 3 stars? The service is SLOW. Enough said. My boyfriend and I checked into the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort on 4/19/2024 for a 2 night stay/long weekend with no problems. The property is in a great location and very convenient to Hearst Castle and Cambria. We got there a little after 3 pm and the room was ready for us. We were told at the front desk that the only amenity not available was the indoor pool. Not a problem for us since we hadn't planned on going in the water anyway. The room was made up and perfectly clean. It was rather dated (probably redone sometime in the '90's) but totally serviceable. I discovered the hard way that the mattress was past its prime when it destroyed my back that night. There was a noticeable dip in it. We also found a light switch/dimmer that was having some problems. It took a while to figure out how to mess with it in just the right way to get the overhead lights to actually turn off so we could sleep. I let the front desk know about these things when we headed out to breakfast in the morning, then went on with our day going to tour Hearst Castle, then some wine tasting. When we got back in the evening we found that not only hadn't either issue been addressed, there had been no maid service done. It was obvious that someone had been in the room since the light we had managed to turn off was now turned back on, but nothing else had been done. We decided to turn the mattress ourselves, hoping that would help (it did a little). We left the next morning and will find somewhere else to say next time we're in San Simeon that isn't a relic of the 1990's and actually provides the basic services expected from any motel/hotel. read more

We decided to escape the smoke and the heat to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Made a last minute reservation and although there were no ocean front room available we still had a nice time. Happy that they are pet friendly. The room was clean and very comfortable. Upon arrival there were lots of people, but everyone was social distancing and wearing a mask as needed. The restaurant has outdoor seating as well as take out. The path to the beach is close by and easy to walk to. We had a wonderful relaxing weekend and will be back again. read more

I drove 4 hours with 2 dogs & beach attire with the impression I will be at a resort. This is MOTEL 6's cousin with bigger boobs and the boobs are the mini bar that have activated my beer goggles to enjoy the place and drown out all the noise you will hear outside and from neighboring rooms. The place isn't bad but most def not what I was expecting. For the price I could've booked a local hotel and had a nice dinner at Ruth Chris. I will say if your looking for that small town feel with suspicious undertone. This is your place ! read more

Mom and daughter getaway. We had originally booked at Sands by the Sea Motel but upgraded to this one. Staff was amazing. Room was nice and clean. View of the ocean was perfect. However, my daughter is 12 years old and our room was next to a couple that was very active during the night. There was very loud banging on the wall at 1AM to where I had to turn on the TV so my daughter wouldn't have to hear and question. Welp, that didn't work. The hotel is on a bluff overlooking the ocean. It was very windy and cold. I read some of the reviews and some, I don't agree with. I liked our room. it was clean and the views were beautiful. I read some of the reviews, remember, you are on an ocean front. There's dirt, wind, etc.and they're not going to put high quality carpet in the rooms. Don't let the negative reviews spoil your stay. You are there to visit Hurst Castle, eat and enjoy your weekend trip on a beautiful coast line. My family loved it and we will return. Beware: Check your accounts for an additional charge. Went here on 11/1/22 and checked out 11/2/22 asked for my receipt and turned in minibar keys and on 11/7/22 was charged an additional mini bar charge of $25.74. I called and spoke to Beatrice who was the supervisor she said. I asked why we were charged minibar charge that we never opened. Beatrice could not explain why we were charged and just said housekeeping did an inventory of items so that is why the charge. I asked what was missing and she could not tell me what was missing from their inventory just that we were charged. I'm smart enough to know not to take anything out of a minibar because I don't want to be charged their fees when there is a liquor store across the street and I could get whatever I want there. I asked to speak to a manager so I could get an explanation of what was missing from their inventory and she said the manager was not in. Beatrice was so quick to say she would remove the charge leads me to believe this is common practice with them. So here is what I have come up with, 1. I gave them a bad review on the girl that checked us in upon arrival and they did not like the review so maybe charged us the minibar charge for that reason? 2. Charged our credit card in hopes that we wouldn't pay attention so they could get an additional $25.74? 3. Housekeeping took something out of the minibar and said we did it? I don't know if this place has changed ownership but we have visited this place multiple times and I always looked forward to staying here and eating at their restaurant but after this last visit it may be our last due to the check in process that we experienced and the minibar charge that we never used and I will have to look for somewhere else to visit. Lesson I have learned from this experience going forward...decline to take ownership of minibar keys and have them note my account that minibar keys were declined by customer. Hopefully this practice on my part will stop fraudulent charges going forward. read more

I would not return to this hotel. I will provide pros and cons. Pros: Most of the staff was quite nice and hard working with only one exception. The location is very close to Hearst Castle, our destination. There are rooms right on the beach walking to the ocean. The restaurant was very good for the two breakfast visits. Nice hot coffee available in the lobby is included. The toiletries are of reasonable quality and there are games and fireplaces outside for gathering. Cons: They seem to be very resistant to daily cleaning of the rooms during our stay even if you make a request. I called looking for a hotel room with a separate soaking tub and shower. I was told the more expensive rooms have them available so I agreed to the higher room rate. When we arrived, we were given a shower tub combo, which I specifically said I did NOT want a combo. They did not clean our room and I had a back and forth with the front desk because housekeeping staff had left for the day. I said I was fine with the room not being cleaned except for the tub, I needed the tub cleaned and sanitized. I requested to use their cleaning things so that I could do it myself or change my room for one with a clean soaking tub but was told they were all booked and none were available. They eventually did send someone for it. I went to the front desk about 20-30 minutes later and overheard the same front desk person telling someone that just walked in that they DID have rooms available and the ones with a ocean view and soaking tub were $80 more. I think the front desk was annoyed with me because I called later asking about the smores kits the website stated they sold but was told they are $80 because they come with a blanket and are NOT sold separately. I didn't believe it so the next morning I asked a different person about the smores kit and she told be it was $7. It seemed to me that they were dishonest with me and that is why I am leaving a negative review and would not return. Currently the stairs to go to the beach have a "keep off" sign. You should be very careful walking down the sand and rocks to reach the beach, could be dangerous for some. The decor is very dated if that is important to anyone, it did not matter to us. read more
