Expensive, unprofessional. What can I say. Hiring Celtic Moving and Storage for our move was a very expensive mistake. The final price was more than double what was quoted. In addition, to the $1,250 to move a pre-packed 2 bedroom apartment, they broke over $2000 worth of our belongings. Everything that wasn't pre-packed by us came out stained, scratched or broken. They broke most of what they "packed" for us. A sturdy desk was broken. Shelving was destroyed. They broke one of our couches and stained our other and our mattress. They overcharged us, milking extra $. After they were done, they said they would write up the bill. At 4:35 p.m., after sitting in their truck for 15 minutes, they came back with a bill stating they were had worked until 5:00 p.m., In effect charging me for an extra 40 minutes of labor: this after taking over 70 minutes to do the 20 minute drive from our SF flat to our new home just outside the city. They gave us an estimate of $600 for 2 guys. An hour into it, they were joined by a third "mover" who was not an employee to "help", which made us uncomfortable. We had Celtic pack and move our house last week. They packed our home in one day (6 hours), loaded everything onto their truck and stored it overnight, then moved us the next. We didn't have to think about packing, buying boxes and bubblewrap, or anything until the night before they arrived--two days before our move. What an awesome experience it is to let someone else take care of all that for you. No towers of boxes sitting around for weeks as you pack everything in your spare time. Only one night without your stuff, instead of a week of paper plates and plastic forks. The team was super nice, friendly, honest, professional, quick, and did a great job of labeling, wrapping, and organizing everything. I can't recommend them enough. read more

These guys moved me this morning and they are rockstars. If I could make A.J. and Johnny my honorary uncles, I would. They were super friendly despite the early hour on a Sunday, let me ride in the truck and smoke cigarettes with them on the way to my sweet new mission pad, and managed to get my beloved console piano up an (apparently quite steep - oops) flight of stairs in less than two hours. These folks came highly recommended by my boss and the experience, from booking over the phone less than a week beforehand (a little late in the game), to their right-on-time arrival, to the efficient, easy-as-pie move, was a treat. I will NEVER move myself again. And if I do move again within the City, I will hire these people and also recommend them to anyone who needs movers. I found out about Celtic through a colleague and called them when I knew my dates (while standing on line at H&M in New York). The lady was super nice, confirmed everything and told me the whole scoop. I was told the guys would be at my place between 8 and 8:30am. At 8:05 my phone rings "We're Here!!" They came up to my apartment to inspect the amount of hell they would go through that morning. I gave them each a large bottle of water and voila - my apartment was empty. It was really weird not to help. They followed us to the new location and voila - my new place was pack with my things. I have no clue how they did it, but they carried it all on their backs, sometimes four boxes at a time. I forget their names, but THANK YOU!!! It turned out costing a bit more than I anticipated (but still worth every penny). I either wasn't told about "driving time" from their lot to my apartment or I didn't hear it because I was at H&M in New York. I then gave the guys a nice tip, which I would have done anyway. They deserved it and more. Only one wine glass broken because I hate packing and this was the last glass to be packed and it was just shoved into a box. Now I can get new wine glasses. Took about 2 weeks for the check to be deposited, which I did not fancy too much. They only accept cash or checks. Wine glass my fault. Check taking a long time to go to the bank - their fault. But these people still deserve a 5. read more

This is the second time I've used Celtic movers and they have never disappointed me. I have used other movers trying to save money, and each time I wished I had used Celtic. I had a three bedroom house to move with several fragile antiques. They work HARD and NOTHING got damaged (unlike a previous mover I used who destroyed my patio furniture). They were on time and helped me pack up items that I did not have time to finish before their arrival. I will absolutely use them again. read more

I really really hate moving, but Celtic makes it a lot less painful than it can be. I've used them twice so far (both in-city movies) and they were great each time. The first time I moved, I only had 2 movers and it took probably 3.5 hours or so (which was expected). The second time I moved, we had 3 movers, more stuff (moving 2 apartments into 1) and it took a little over 3 hours. (Both times, I only had them move the big items and schlepped smaller items in my car -- which is a huge pain, but I'm sure saved hundreds of dollars). These guys are fast, efficient and take care of your belongings. They bring extra wardrobe boxes, tape, etc. Next time I move, I'm calling them again! read more

Marty and the team were great! We had a surprise move out (building flood) and the Celtic team was able to squeeze us into their schedule. Despite the rush to move out, they still sent an estimator who gave us good tips to make our move out more efficient. They stored our items for several months and did a super job with the move back. Out of the four moving companies I contacted for quotes, Celtic was the only one who offered to come to my home and eyeball the moving task and give me anything better than a general quote. Celtic charged $60 an hour per mover (three movers for my job) and the three movers were very professional, friendly and worked both hard and quickly and came in under the time projected. The stairs at my old place were winding and outright awful for moving furniture but you wouldn't have known it from their attitudes. I certainly hope that I won't be moving anytime soon but whenever I do, Celtic will be my first call. read more

Having moved several times in the past, I'm skeptical of most moving companies. I could tell you all kinds of stories about that. Celtic Moving was different. Their prices for the packing, the storage, and the moving were reasonable. The end price ended up being exactly like they quoted - no last minute surprise changes when they had possession of my stuff (I've had that happen more than once with other movers). They were nice, polite people to deal with. And - very importantly - nothing at all got damaged or lost during my move. This was especially great because I was out of town during the entire process. They handled it directly with my realtor. Loved that. So... this move was by far my best moving experience. I really appreciated the service they provided me. I highly recommend them. Martin and his moving crew are as friendly, efficient and professional as can be. With a constant smile on their faces they've moved my entire SF 2 bedroom house all the way down to Santa Monica in less than 24 hours. Celtic Movers were friendly, worked with us on very short notice, and were fast and efficient. The only reason I am giving them four stars was because we felt a little ripped-off at the end. The total time was five hours and that included driving time (from our old place in the Western Edition to the new one in Glen Park). While we were figuring out the bill we noticed we were being charged for an extra half-hour. They explained it was due to 'driving time'. So....does that mean from their HQ to our old place? From our new place back to their HQ? We didn't understand, and were not having it. We did, however, give them a tip and bought them coffee, bottled water, and doughnuts - so I think everything balanced itself out. read more

I just used Celtic again a month ago and they were awesome again. They only sent two guys out this time, so it took a little longer, but the guys moved nonstop the entire time. My total for the move was $600 from San Francisco (outer sunset) to Oakland, and it took the guys about 3 hours to load and 2 hours to unload + drive time. Celtic charges $100 per hour vs. the $150 other movers charge, so it's a no-brainer. read more

Efficient and quick moving service, but there were a few instances of carelessness. The given arrival time was 8-9 am, and they arrived on time at 8:30. I had two guys for a small studio move to new a place, so I didn't have a ton of furniture and they were able to finish the whole move in 2 hours. It was $300 for 2 hours including $60 of transportation/commuting fees. While they were very quick, there were some details that the guys overlooked. For example, my plush ivory colored sofa was not covered up and they left some dark fingerprints on it that I had to clean off. Also, my boyfriend was coming back to the apartment during the move-out loading portion and he saw them toughly push my office desk (which has wheels) until it rolled towards the back of the truck and hit the back. Also, the boxes that were marked for the kitchen were all placed on the kitchen counters instead of the floors. Because all the kitchenware, appliances, and plateware/silverware are so heavy, I could not lift the boxes down to the ground to unpack. I had to lift everything out from high counters and it was straining. Overall, they do a decent job but I would recommend giving the movers more instructions if you have special items or placements in mind. read more

This stellar crew expertly unloaded everything into the freshly painted house, onto brand new floors, and into the garage, taking extra care to not damage anything. These guys rock!! My husband and I just bought a house, we had a quick escrow close and wasn't sure the exact date of moving so we couldn't plan ahead and book a moving company. We called Celtic moving company and in one day they were able to take us. It was such a relief that they were able to accomodate a short notice request. Celtic was actually the only company that called us back! Jimmy was very friendly and easy to reach by phone. He said it would be no problem to send out two guys. Tony and Danny were awesome! They were at our house 15 minutes early and stayed until the job was done. They got our entire house moved in a little under 3 hours. They wrapped all our big furniture up and protected all my large mirrors with care, and we have some pretty heavy furniture items so I know it wasn't an easy task to do! This was the 5th time my wife and I have personally used the lads from Celtic. My wife's company also used them. So, I've used Celtic twice in the past three months to move. The first time they did a good job. The second time was a disaster. I would have given them 5 stars for the first move and 1 star for the second. Factor in that I had a friend who also used them and had a rough time with them. Hence, the 2 stars. So, they were recommended by the landladies of the apartment I was moving into. Martin came to estimate how much the job would be. 6 hours @ $100/hour. No problem. The two movers came on time and were very courteous and respectful with my stuff. They were careful and I only noticed one scratch on my entertainment center. It ended up being $650 ($50 was for road travel time between the apartments even though the apartments were a few blocks away from each other, but I didn't mind). They did such a nice job that I gave them a $100 tip. Fast forward a couple of months. My upstairs neighbor moved out so I asked my landladies if I could move into their old apartment. I called Celtic to arrange another move. They estimated it would take 3 hours @ 100/hour. No problem. The movers arrived 10 minutes early (which I liked) and started hauling my furniture and boxes upstairs before signing anything or talking about details. I tried to communicate with one of the movers, but it turned out he didn't understand English. Or, maybe he only understood English with a Scottish accent which the other guy had. While they were moving my furniture, I was finishing up moving small items in the kitchen and hooking up my TV after they had moved it. After I noticed paint marks on my entertainment center, I started to monitor them a little more closely. They spent ten minutes trying to get my desk through my front door. I told them *twice* that the legs came off. The first time the Scottish dude just brushed my comment aside. Out of desperation, I tried communicating with the other guy, but he still didn't understand my non-Scottish accent. Just as I thought I was going to have to intervene and tell them not to take off the door (they had already taken off the doorstop), they stopped to take off the legs. Later, the Scottish dude waltzed into my kitchen asking for water. As I was filling glasses with it, he opened my freezer looking for ice. I don't make/keep ice. I thought it was a little rude that he decided to make himself at home enough to go rummaging through my freezer. So, after 2 1/4 hours of banged up and paint-smeared furniture (I later looked at the stairwell to check for damage and so huge scrapes and chips for which my landladies are charging me to repair), they were done. I asked for the paperwork and the Scottish dude said, "Yeah, but I'm going to have a quick smoke first." Okay. Aren't you on a clock? When's he's done smoking his cigarette, he saunters in and tells me that there's a 3 hour minimum. First I'd heard of it, but I just write a check for $300 and send them on their way to their next job (the Scottish dude had accidentally called me half an hour earlier thinking he was calling the next client to give her a heads up they were on their way) with no tip. After my first move I had recommended them to a friend of mine. She was moving a couple buildings down so it was similar to my second move. Everything was hand carried. The two men Celtic had sent out for her job apparently didn't have a crescent wrench on them so my friend had to go out looking for one. Isn't the point of hiring movers is that they are equipped for these types of events? The movers during my second move asked me first for a screwdriver and then for a crescent wrench. Um, shouldn't you have one on you? So, it seems pretty hit and miss with these guys. I suspect they send out their better movers for bigger jobs, so, if you have a smaller job, I suggest you find another company. read more

It felt like since they were charging by the hour, that they took their time, took a lot of bathroom breaks, and were standing around a lot. A friend and I helped out quite a bit to speed things up. Still, it took way more time than I thought it should have to move a one bedroom apartment that was thoroughly packed. But my things were not damaged and they were friendly enough. 2 and a half stars would be more fitting. read more

I don't really know what to say. It was kind of insane moving with these guys. When I called, I was asked how much stuff I had and how far the move was, and in the middle of my description, the owner said, "so you need a couple of guys for a couple of hours?" and i said, "sure?" then, they came about an hour later than they had said they would... they moved pretty fast, but as they were almost done loading up the truck, i heard one of them start complaining about how it was supposed to be a two hour job and it was going to be lots longer than that and he had to be somewhere... and stuff (we overheard him asking the other guy if he should cut off his hair, he was thinking of shaving it bald, but there are no pro wrestlers with short hair, so he should keep it long? and then he invited us to go see him wrestle.). so they decided that the only really feasible option was to take all of our stuff to their storage facility overnight and then start again in the morning... which was weird and stressful, but they let us come with them to the storage to see it and to meet the person who would be watching it (because he lives there) and we got to put our own lock on the truck and we got a signed note that nothing would be stolen or damaged. they were prompt the following morning and called when they thought they might be late, and they got the job done really quickly... but then they charged us for these boxes that we hadn't asked for and that we didn't know they would charge us for, and that were already fairly banged up, so that was annoying. in a lot of ways the experience was fairly unpleasant. i felt guilty and rushed for things that weren't really my own fault, and the overnight thing was so weird... and it seems like only the owner is celtic (and one person who's worked there for a long time mispronounced the word)... but... everything was moved. everything was safe. and when they weren't being grumpy about it taking a long time to move, they were pretty fun to interact with. all of the staff that we met were very personable, which really helped the experience a lot. so... if i could split up my rating into bits, i'd give the people a four, but the experience they gave me a two. they're good folks. generally. read more

I was recommended to Celtic by our local storage facility. Setting up my appt was fairly simple. On moving day, they called to say they would arrive earlier than expected; which was awesome since I was prepared early. The two guys went straight to work and did an super quick job, no damages and no complaints. These guys were perfect. My boyfriend's only complaint was that they weren't wearing kilts! I had a horrible experience with these guys. Lots of attitude, gave us a lot of crap for not having a parking permit for the street (we lived on a quiet street and at the end of the day, no one gave them any trouble for having the truck there). They were also in horrible moods and made lots of nasty comments to my boyfriend and I all day. And to top it all off, when everything was said and done, they quoted me the final price and had the nerve to ask for a tip! The one upside is that even though they threw the boxes around with no care whatsoever, miraculously nothing broke. But I would never use these guys again. read more

The service was great, nothing to complain about there - the movers were extremely efficient, friendly, and good-natured. They moved everything really quickly, brought everything to the right place, and even helped us haul a desk that wasn't part of the move. The reason I give them two stars instead of five, is because I am extremely disappointed in their pricing tactics and when it came time to pay up, I had to pay considerably more than I expected. First of all, they quoted me $100/hr plus a $30 fuel charge. Fine, I accept that gas prices are awful, I can live with that. But then *after* the move was done, they said there was a three hour minimum - when the move only took two hours. No one told me anything about a three hour minimum!! I called the office the next day, they argued there was a 1/2 hour driving time - okay, maybe, but then they STILL charged me a full hour extra. Plus, if they are charging a $30 fuel charge, what the heck do they have to charge the 1/2 "driving time" for?? Not to mention, the guy on the phone took my number and said he would "talk to the boss" and call me back. Guess what... I have not yet gotten a call back, and it has been two days. :( It's too bad, this experience left a bad taste in my mouth when it could have been great. Just tell me all the real charges in advance and don't be shady about it!!! read more
