When I first called them they estimated 2 to 3 hours for moving my studio ($200-$300) but ended up taking 4, or $400. The reviews for this place are definitely at the extremes--people love or hate them. I guess that makes sense for a moving company but I'm still a bit surprised by the negative reviews. Personally, I had a fantastic experience. Moved my boyfriend from an enormous (though lightly furnished) house in Hillsborough to an apartment in SF. When a VERY thin Irishman (Walker) and a petite hispanic man showed up in the morning, I got worried. I needn't have worried. With a few breaks for coffee and cigarettes, these guys moved at a highly efficient clip and were pleasant the whole time. I always try to do my part with movers (have things well-organized, provide breakfast and lunch, put on good tunes, beer at the end of the day, etc.) and these guys were extremely appreciative. As an added bonus, my boyfriend and Walker became an impromptu comedy team, with me as their target. Whatever, it made the day go by faster. And Walker didn't bat an eye when I asked him to switch the location of several pieces of furniture that they had already placed in the new apartment. I didn't negotiate the pricing (or pay) so I can't speak to those aspects of the move, but the service--attention to detail, care with objects and overall attitude--gets 5 easy stars in my book! read more

Unbelievable!!! These guys amazed me in SO many ways. I had a 900 lb hot tub that needed to be moved from the front yard to the back. The hot tub company I paid thousands to, just left it and said I would need to hire a crane to lift it over the house for another $600-$800! I figured we could move it to the back with the right stuff. Well, I was wrong...this was not moving without some serious movers. I called Celtic in a panic cause my contractor needed to start framing the next day. I called Monday. They were there Tuesday morning with 5 guys, piano mover, dolly, ropes, blankets, etc. They tackled this thing and had it back on the cement pad in an hour or less! These guys are real pro's. Martin oversaw our move. He was great to work with and so were the other 5 movers. Why 6 movers you may ask? We don't have a lot of stuff, but we do have a 7 foot grand piano that had to go up 3 flights of stairs. There was some question about whether the piano could get inside the desired room. In fact, I wasn't sure it was humanly possible to get the piano up all those stairs, but these guys pulled through. What a team! These guys are fast, nimble, and hard workers. We moved several years ago and had a terrible experience. Celtic was recommended to me by a friend so I went with them. The estimation meeting went well (he said all the right things... "will you put the crib back together?" "of course, we do it all the time!") and the cost seemed reasonable. I will never use them again. They were smokers and unproductive. One guy was texting on his phone instead of working. I had to tell them to smoke across the street instead of stinking up my garage. I paid for them to pack my kitchen and they did a horrible job. They could use their brains, but I suppose chose not to. Instead of neatly placing things from a drawer into the box, they literally just dumped into a box. Including our silverware drawer! Just turned the drawer upside down and dumped into a box. I nearly screamed. Maybe I did, in shock. When I offered to buy them pizza for lunch they insisted on Chinese food (and then even had the nerve to ask if I was going "high end Chinese or fast food Chinese"!). Then the guy who ended up asking for Chinese food ate too much kung pao chicken that we had to wait 10 minutes before our second trip while he took the biggest dump in our new home. Seriously?! When they told me they can disassemble and assemble the crib, it was a lie or at least an exaggeration. The guy who was to do it had no idea what he was doing. The owner really didn't care that they broke a lamp, that they were texting on the job, were lazy and horrible packers. He defended his guys (which maybe gives him boss points) but no customer points. I would never recommend them to anyone I know. Oh, and they charged me more than the estimate -- which I came to find out after the fact is against the law so I called them on it and they sent me the difference back. read more

We had to move a full sized bed, small desk and table from San Francisco (SOMA) to Belmont. Every moving company I spoke with wanted a 3 hour minimum with 3 men involved...very expensive. Finally I spoke with Noel at Celtic Moving & Storage. He immediately had a very reasonable price for two men with a minimum of two hours. They were also available on Sunday am when parking would be less of a problem. "You get what you pay for" right? We were a little nervous about that. Noel confirmed the move two days before. On moving day, Daniel and Olivier were five minutes early; they wrapped the bedding in protective plastic, quickly filled the truck w/o touching any wall or door. In Belmont, everything was unloaded the same careful way. Moving is stressful, but our experience w/ Celtic was so professional and positive we will use them again and recommend to everyone we know. read more

Due to the reviews on this site, I figured I would give these guys a shot when I needed to move to a new apartment. I must have gotten my crew on a bad day because they were terrible. With their dolly, the put multiple scratches in the hardwood floors. They also scratched the wall in the elevator of BOTH buildings. One of the guys on the crew was awesome and worked super hard. The other one seemed like he was really hung over. He was just slamming our boxes around and complaining. He did not seem to care at all. If anything, it was as if we imposed on his time. They haul stuff like contestants in one of those World's Strongest Man competition. They pack their truck like, uh, people who know how to pack things really well. They show up on time. Our moving company subcontracted Celtic Moving to do a packing and loading job for our move with ABF trucking company. Celtic did $1800 worth of damage to our furniture and were grossly negligent in two other cases. Dealing with the claims process with the primary company was a seven-month headache. Celtic's two cases of neglect were heinous. In one case they tucked the bottom flaps of a box together, without tape, and packed a lamp in the box. For good measure they threw a sealed bag of packing peanuts into the box along side the lamp. When we lifted the box to carry it into our new home, the lamp (and bag of packing peanuts) came crashing through the flaps of the box onto the metal floor of the truck. The other case was heartbreaking. Celtic was supposed to be a company of experts and we paid for experts because we wanted to be sure that our most sentimental fragile item, an antique mirror, would be carefully packed and loaded. When we opened the truck we found it LOOSE propped between a box and a bulkhead. In neither case were the items damaged. The moving company generously reimbursed us for the cost of the boxes and labor that Celtic charged us for packing and loading the lamp and the mirror, and asked us to provide a figure we thought was fair for compensation for the negligence. We provided a figure. Then we spent weeks going back and forth, through two appeals and a call to the Better Business Bureau, in dispute about the unpaid damages, repairs, and negligence claim. We ultimately settled for a fraction of the cost of the total damages. Had the mirror been damaged, we'd be going to court. read more

Celtic Moving is a Rare Gem! Friendly, fast and efficient! By far the best experience I've had with moving companies. The Celtic moving folks were fabulous from the initial meeting with Martin for an estimate through the move itself. The crew seemed more like a family than a work crew. They were all cheerful and very respectful. I also could not believe the SPEED in which they worked. In less than an hour my small home was nearly cleared out! They take their job seriously, took special care not to damage the house or the stuff being moved, but were also in good humor throughout the move. These guys worked hard all day. I had them moving a three floor loft down 45-70 stairs. They were fun to be around and really made this move smooth. Pricing wasn't the lowest, but he quality more than made up for the move. They went the extra mile and used creativity to get some of our large objects down from our 3rd story loft. Ask for Joshua and Omar. These guys worked fast and were so careful with everything, no breakage, nothing. They didn't take smoke breaks and were super pleasant. I didn't have some things packed and when I left the room and came back, they already had things packed and were carrying it out. This is a super customer-oriented, family-owned business. They helped move my Mom, and the experience was so positive. The service was high-quality and "off the charts". I needed a ride to my Mom's place so that I could drive my Mom's car for her, and they let me ride from SF to Petaluma with them. As my Uber app was not cooperating that morning, there was huge concern about my meeting up with the movers at the time we needed to leave SF. I had a fantastic group of 3 men help me with my move (one room out of a 3 bedroom and into another 3 bedroom). Now, my philosophy on moving is to be absolutely and completely prepared days before the movers show up, so all my stuff was packed, piled, and ready to go. I also move with the movers, and find that if I'm moving fast, they are, too. With the guys from Celtic, I never worried about wasted time of scratched corners. These guys were flying! We bought a leather sofa from Pottery Barn, and WHOOPS, we neglected to measure our front door and hallway to see if it would fit into our house. The delivery guys from Pottery Barn tried and tried but could not even get it in the house, let alone the room we wanted it in. So, we decided to give it one last shot and called Celtic Moving to see if they might have any special tricks to get it in before returning it back to Pottery Barn. Well, Joshua and Tony G. worked their magic and after 2 hours, we had the couch not only in the house, but in the room we wanted it in- a freaking miracle, I tell you, because it was off of a long narrow hallway, and quite frankly, we had already come to terms with the fact that it probably wasn't going to make it in there. AJ and Johnny really helped us out of a last minute scrape today! We had three 1,500 pound boxes of equipment sitting on the sidewalk outside our office and no way to get them inside (long story)! These two rigged up an ingenious way to get the huge boxes through the door and safely delivered them to their resting place. Seamus and AJ were fantastic! I had initially called some other company who never showed (truck trouble, they said). I called Celtic and Martin (I believe) said they could have a truck there in an hour. They were at my place in 45 minutes. Seamus and AJ had my place moved out in an hour, then picked up my friends stuff and had it all moved into our new place within 2 hours (total of 4 hours). They were super friendly, very professional, safe, and FAST! And Seamus' parallel parking skills with that big truck are incredible! I reccomend Celtic to everyone! I would consider Celtic Moving a small own business with a lot of "heart." The task to pack, load, and unload with enthusiasm was most impressive. My home probably had more furniture than most; every kitchen component ever made, 75 boxes of holiday decorations, 7 Christmas trees (yes, 7), tables and chairs for 30+ guest and an over supply of outdoor living "stuff." It definitely was not a "normal" move out -move in day for the workers. But yet, their extraordinary display of respect for my belongings, proficiency at an accelerated pace makes me endorse Celtic Moving 110%.
