WOW...great place to eat. We were visiting for the US Open and this spot was recommended to us (close to our hotel). Huge menu. Very tasty cole slaw and potato salad, like Mom used to make ! I would give Central Dinner 5 stars solely for their chicken lemon soup. However, I feel like the other options I've had there have just been alright. My daughter and I recently came here for lunch, and she got the largest grilled hot dog I've ever seen! I thought the hot dog was pretty tasty. She wasn't a fan of the waffle fries (undersalted and slightly undercooked), but she and I both loved my traditional fries. We didn't know that we would get two different types as it wasn't indicated anywhere in the menu, but it ended up working out well. The veggie panini had zucchini and eggplant that was far too thick. They kept sliding off the sandwich, and it was very difficult to eat. It was also undersalted and didn't have too much flavor. With some added balsamic and cutting the veggies up, it helped a bit. At this point, I think I'll be sticking to the soup, but I'll be also be buying it by the gallon! read more

Came here with a group of 10 on a Saturday around 11:30-12. I called ahead to see how long the wait would be, and they let me know they'd set up a table for our arrival. So nice! Our server was Kelly and she was super friendly and accommodated our request for split checks with a smile. We had 4 kids in the group and she was great with them too. I had the chicken club on ciabatta. The bread wasn't able to stand up to the tomato slices and unfortunately was deteriorating well before I was finished eating. The sandwich could've used a sauce or something too. It was a little dry. The fries, however, were perfectly crispy and delicious. One friend had the blueberry pancakes and they were HUGE! She said they were really loaded with blueberries too. Another friend had the veggie burger deluxe. She said the onion rings and coleslaw were good, but the burger was a little dry. Another friend had the Italian omelette and I don't think I've seen a cleaner plate than his when he was finished eating The bathroom was clean and stocked with soap and paper towels. My boyfriend and I visited Central Diner for the first time after the Mall at Robinson. My brother has been recommending this place for the last year or so! He always suggested we go there for dinner, and I always suggested somewhere else since I expected it to be "diner" food. Little did I know they had a full bar, breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert menus! We stopped on Saturday around 2 pm and the parking lot was packed. This seems to be the only non chain restaurant around the mall, so I can see why it is popular. There was about a 10 minute wait. Our waitress was very friendly and informed us that she was new. She was very bubbly and wrote down our orders and listened patiently. I checked on Yelp while we waited for our table and saw that the diner was known for their Greek specialties. I ordered spanakopita and a Greek salad. My boyfriend ordered the gyro with french fries. We ordered cocktails which may have been a mistake. I ordered a dirty martini and the waitress brought a literal martini glass full of vodka. I told her my drink was wrong and that I definitely could not drink it. She apologized and quickly brought the correct drink. My boyfriend ordered a mojito and it had lemons instead of limes. It was fine, but different. The food was great and the portion sizes were large. I loved that the salad had good, fresh feta and stuffed grape leaves in it. The spanakopita was my favorite part. I will definitely order it again!! My boyfriend loved the gyro and french fries. We impulsively ordered a piece of cake at the end of our lunch after seeing them in the case. The waitress gave us a piece of paper with hand written special cakes of the day. We shared the chocolate pudding cake and wow it was spongy and moist. I was thinking about getting baklava or carrot cake to go, but decided not to. Instant regret! I could see us going to Central Diner just for a slice of cake and coffee. This is a great restaurant: very upscale for a diner. My most recent visit was disappointing. It was on Valentine's Day 2025 at 5:00 p. m. Our food and service were good as always, but we were rushed. The entrees came out ten minutes after ordering. We had not even finished our soup yet. I suppose the restaurant was trying to get people in and out quickly on what would be a busy night. Two things that a restaurant of this stature and pricing should do: provide cloth, not paper napkins (which even Olive Garden does), and a container of soft butter rather than providing packets that the diner must open. read more

We have been coming here for the last 3 or 4 years and always loved the food and generous portions. This last visit for dinner was pretty disappointing. I got the veggie omelet which was ok but the home fries were sliced super thin, dry and tasted like they were made that morning and reheated. My husband's Alfredo pasta with chicken and broccoli was also underwhelming. The sauce was too thick and there were maybe 3 pieces of chicken and very little broccoli. On the way home from airport and hungry, we drove a little out of our way to Central Diner. It was absolutely one of our better decisions! The building is brightly lit. Despite the late hour, we were warmly greeted by staff. My spouse chose one of the specials: Shepherd's Pie with beef vegetable soup to start with. The soup was thick and flavorful. He said it was good but salty. For him to say salty means that it was inedible for me. He loves salt so the cup was completely empty. The Shepherd's Pie arrived and he gasped. It was 6" high and encased in whipped potatoes, enough for 3 hearty dinners. Instead of a goopy stew, it was more like a meatloaf and chopped vegetables. He really enjoyed it and he will enjoy for 2 more days. I opted for Chicken Athena with broccoli and Greek salad. Again, my choice was "diner" sized. The salad was composed of crisp salad greens, olives, and a mound of feta with Greek dressing on the side. Yum! The chicken was thin sliced and cooked tender, then covered with tomatoes, capers, and feta! I guess I like feta! The light sauce was really delicious. I can usually figure out what is in a sauce, but the flavors were subtle and just overall delicious. Broccoli was a small head, lightly steamed and enough for 3 portions! We also were served crusty bread slices that were grilled. The entrance has an illuminated case with several different cakes. The cakes are a foot high. If a patron could not find a favorite flavor here, then they don't like cake! A "slice" costs $7.00 which is a bargain. We didn't eat our dinner, so we didn't qualify for dessert. My sisters and I love this diner! We live in California and it's hard to get the real diner feel in Cali. Not that this is a typical diner but they've got some of the hallmarks that I enjoy; all day breakfast, a huge menu with all kinds of food and they make all of the dishes well, fresh dessert options right up at the front that you can take a look at while you wait for your table, and of course great waitresses. We ordered the roast top sirloin au jus, pasta fra diavolo, chicken parmigiana sandwich, and a steak. Everything was delicious and each meal was freshly prepared. The Greek salad that comes with the entree was delicious. I also had a baked potato, again, perfectly cooked and delicious. Portions are large! We could have ordered one plate for every two people. We took home leftovers and enjoyed the food again the next day. We also indulged in the chocolate cake for a birthday. They wrote happy birthday on the plate and it was special. The cake was moist and one slice was big enough for the table to share. We will return the next time we are in Pitts! read more

Open until 1 a.m. - now that's worth a trip from Fox Chapel when all else is closed. Really ample portions. Great service. Had a nice takeout lunch from Central Diner last week- we got the buffalo chicken wrap, the monte christo, and the spanikopita. Best freaking spanakopita ever with the addition of the feta on it. I like the monte christo a lot but it could have used a jam or compote or something- it's a lot of sandwich and is a little dry. Buffalo chicken wrap was our least favorite of our picks, but was still pretty good, I just wasn't crazy about the buffalo sauce. read more

I went her to celebrate my friends birthday yesterday and it was on point. The menu is extensive and I wanted to try everything. The place was packed but very clean and organized. Central Diner & Grille used to be our favorite restaurant, but lately we have been experiencing problems there. BOTH OF THE PROBLEMS OCCURRED ON A SUNDAY, SO I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GOING THERE ON A SUNDAY. They are extremely BUSY ON SUNDAYS; THE FOOD IS RUSHED, AND THIS IS WHY PROBLEMS ARE OCCURRING! My husband and I usually eat there 6 or 7 times a month. On 9-29-24 (yesterday), five of us ate there. My mom ordered the western skillet, my daughter ordered blueberry pancakes with a side of potatoes, my daughter's husband ordered the Mediterranean panini, and my husband and I both ordered veggie skillets. I ate half of my skillet at the restaurant and brought the other half home with me. I ate the rest of my meal at 12:00 AM last night, and I found a lot of broken egg shells in this part of my skillet. When I spoke with Mary the next day, she acted like I was making this up. She said that she couldn't do anything to rectify this, because she needed to see the effected meal. I asked if she could at least talk to the cook last night. She said, that unless she has the meal, she wouldn't be able to talk to the cook. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! All she had to do was look up our order number to see our order. It is not my responsibility to prove to Mary Beth that there were shells in my skillet. Maybe Central Diner should think twice about the person they hired to cook this! IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GO TO CENTRAL DINER, PICK A DAY OTHER THAN SUNDAY TO GO. ALSO, IF A PROBLEM ARISES, ASK FOR A MANAGER OTHER THAN MARY ANN. SHE OBVIOUSLY HAS NO IDEA HOW TO HANDLE A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT. I am a dialysis patient, and I has diarrhea all morning after eating all of those egg shells. When and if we go back, I will ask to speak with another manager. If we don't go back, Central Diner is going to loose really loyal customers, that is for sure!!! Food is relatively decent but service is always spotty and the restaurant itself need a revamp and thorough cleaning, the carpets throughout smell and are dank, table tops and chairs are always sticky.
