Quick stop for an early dinner after the day was spent with friends going around the mall. Got in there and parking was easy to find in the parking lot. We were a group of 6 and didn't find it difficult to get seated as soon as we got in though the place was bustling with folks. We were in some mood for sev and pani poori to being with and following it up with a main course. Ordered a couple each of Sev Poori, Dahi Batata Sev Poori and Pani poori to begin with ( group of 6). Tasty and very well prepared for each of the items. At times these can get soggy if not prepared with care. Moving on to the main course we ordered their Tava Roti ( absolutely love their Tava roti) along with Malai Paneer , Tadka daal , Saag paneer and Chana saag. Enjoyed every single dish especially the Malai Paneer and Chana saag that stood out as the best out of the best we ordered :). Some on the table did order a few gulab jamun for the desert part though I refrained and had tea instead . Awesome outing with some great quality food that makes it all so worth it. Chaat Bhavan serves probably one of the most authentic vegetarian Indian cuisine in and around Bay Area and if you haven't had a chance to try them out this far, please do so.. Have eaten here few times in past and it has been hit/miss. We went here wanting to try catering menu items as we were considering them for catering for our daughter's birthday. During first visit the manager suggested 2 curries (both had exact same base gravy, I wondered why would he do that). Shortlisted a few items and left. Their website says their catering menu is customizable but IT'S NOT. I reached out saying we wanted to try some deluxe/exotic items and their response was you need to have a minimum number of people before you can order them. I said okay, we can order min quantity, no problem, but they wanted us to bill $100 worth even if we wanted to 'try the menu'. This was a red flag and I Thought it was ridiculous. I should've just moved on. Anyways, we decided not to try those exotic items instead stuck to regular menu items for party planning and went in to try a few more items and ordered the items listed in the bill below . To our surprise the vegetables in the veg korma were stale and smelly. I told the manager and waiter the same and they did nothing about it. Thought I will let the owner know via catering email discussion to see what would their response be. Not surprised that I haven't heard back anything nor got any refund for the spoiled item which we left behind at the restaurant. This speaks about their integrity and quality control. Needless to say both my wife and I got sick and didn't eat anything for next 24 hours due to nausea and sore throat. Glad I tried their menu before catering else would've been embarrassed in front of our guests. SO BEWARE about their malpractices and mediocre food if you decide to consider them for any catering. Wow this place may be my favorite Indian restaurant I've ever been to. The favorite before was a place I ate at London and this place beat it by miles. My family is not familiar with Indian food and Savio, our server recommended dishes to try. My family was hesitant to eat at an all vegetarian spot because they're meat lovers, but they were in awe of all the new flavor combinations. I had just taken my dad to a Michelin recommended restaurant a few days before for his birthday and he liked this restaurant more, so that says a lot. We were hungry and on road so had no choice. The potato were not even mashed and was hoping other spices and sauce on burger but was very dry. We had noodle the following week, which was better still had to request for spicy on side which was very watery green sauce. We also try the rolls which were better compared to that potato burger. We have been religiously going to chaat bhavan various locations since the days Bay Area had not may Indian Mumbai street food options. Chaat bhavan has that leather bound menu card and rectangular paper cutouts as placemats. Including Indian brass statue holding mouth freshener fennel seed at entry! It oozes that vintage charm of famous veg cafe-restaurants chains from streets of suburban Mumbai specially ones lined up next to famous chowpatis. We always order their papad or masala papad. But it's a bit expensive for two papads fried. All their chaat items are good. But our favorite is paav bhaji. We have ordered it as bulk orders too. Next favorite is daal khichadi. Which is basically lentil and rice cooked together with some spices with semiliquid consistency and it is accompanied with equally flavorful kadhi ( besan + yogurt yellow curry) if you are sick with fever/ cold and need home cooked simple food you can definitely order this. Our other favorite menu options are sweet lassi, vegetarian korma and tandoori roti. Also their Hakka noodles are quite good. They tend to be on oily side but that exactly matches Mumbai street food image in my mind! Tandoori roti is perfectly crispy and comes with good amount of melted ghee.
