Well now.. There has been a lot of hype and anticipation for almost a year for their grand opening. There are already several great Thai restaurants in Grass Valley, but they have parking issues. This promised to be an advantage for Chandara Thai, since they have ample, easy parking. So far, however, that is all they have going for them. I stopped by today to check them out. I ordered the Cashew Chicken (one of my favorite Thai dishes) to go from the lunch specials. It was about $10 out the door plus tip. The bag was delivered to me at the front door. It didn't feel like much, but I was optimistic. When I got home, however, that optimism proved unfounded. The square styrofoam to-go container was over half full of very dry white rice. There was about one cup of the cashew chicken entree. It was predominantly onions of several varieties, some water chestnuts, a few cashews, and maybe a couple ounces of chicken. It was bland and I had to smother it in soy sauce to give it any flavor. Hopefully it was just a bad day or lunch rush thing, so I will give them another chance. Update. My wife and a friend dined in and said it was much better than the dine out failure I had. read more

Fresh food with authentic preparation. Having both traveled to Thailand and lived in the Bay Area I've tasted lots of great Thai food and I can say that this is definitely the best, most authentic Thai place in town. Keep up the good work (and I encourage the first reviewer to try them again since they may have been ironing out some new-restaurant kinks). read more

This place has gone downhill since opening. I took my family there last week, spent over $150. The hostess was rude the server was super short and rude. Very much enjoyed my visit to the restaurant. Did not experience ANY of the negatives mentioned in previous reviews. I had panang curry with chicken and my companion had the green curry with shrimp. We also shared the fried wonton appetizer. All very tasty! Prices are appropriate, ambiance very nice. Highly recommended for a date! I only mark this a 4 (would be a 4.5) because my curry was not fully up to my favorite - knowing very well that every Thai chef does it their own way. The food did not inspire me. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork. The pork had no flavor. The service was good. The people were nice, but I commented to my wife, "I haven't found any of the food that made me say wow." We were originally going to go to the Indian restaurant, but we saw Chandra Thai and flipped a coin to decide which to go to. Next time it will be Indian. read more

I do not know "authentic Thai" but this was pretty tasty. Was it better than Sopa? No. Probably on par with Taste of Thai in Grass Valley. I tried the green curry--it has good spice and flavor while the portion size was appropriate. However, the rice was soggy. How do you mess up steamed rice at a Thai restaurant? This shall forever remain a mystery to me. Furthermore, my Thai tea was WAY too sweet. I'm all for sugar and realize it is supposed to be a sweet beverage but this was literally like they added sugar on top of the condensed milk with very little actual "tea" flavor. I would also like to note the service was sub par. The ladies were nice enough to offer a seat while I waited however they seemed to be having issues with several tables. Multiple people had to walk to the register to obtain or pay their bills rather than the staff going to their table. Maybe this is their business mode? I am not sure. But I do know it seemed strange. They also were not apologetic in the least for their poor service which seemed odd. I suppose they just were not very friendly or warm. I don't think either lady smiled once. read more

Went here to pick up a doordash was super sweet to them and they were so rude absolutely so rude, is there's one thing i know about customer service it's you don't act like that. Never even tried the food there and now i definitely don't want to. read more

I've been waiting for a decent Thai place to open up. The food and service was good. The only reason I'm giving four stars vs five is bc I'd like more veggies in the Drunken Noodle and more meat in the curry. That being said, my husband and I are happy return-customers! read more

We have gotten take-out here twice and enjoyed it so much! We come from Los Angeles where we had a gazillion Thai restaurants. This one is very good! We need to try eating in next time... It is very convenient to place order, shop at Raley's, and then pick up order and go home! But the interior looks nice and the staff are friendly so it might be nice to eat there too. So far we have tried pad Thai (good - noodles are thinner than typical), pad see ew, yellow curry, fresh vegetable rolls, spring rolls (fried) and chicken satay. All really good! read more

The Tom Yum tasted like ketchup. The noodles were way too oily and they got half our order wrong. You need to provide the tofu option for your dishes as it forces you to choose chicken and shrimp. When you don't read the note you mess up the dishes for vegetarians and make them sick when they don't see it in the curry. read more

We had heard really great things about this place and wanted to go try it... The restaurant was cold, the server we had appeared to hate her job and the food was flavorless. Went on a Saturday night, and the 2 girls there were 100% rude at every step. They seemed angry to be there, angry at the customers. Heck, I just arrived lol. Wasn't greeted at the door. Had to actually approach them to get a table since i was ignored. When I did, they just had resentful expressions on their face. The girl who seated me wanted to put me right on top of the only other people there. I asked for something a little further away to give them some privacy, "like this one?" she said "NO, THIS ONE!". I said is that my assigned table?" (with a wink)..she was clueless. She just gave me that same bitter/resentful thing again "Yeah!!!" SUMMARY: SERVICE SUCKS. BAD ATTITUDES. First experience is my last? Maybe save yourself the first experience. I found out later Sopa Thai in NV City is way better. Wished I'd known that first. Seems the owner is clueless. Like some of the other reviews, if the staff is that unhappy / miserable, why don't they get the hell out and find another job? They're taking up a job from someone who would LOVE to be there and probably has a much better attitude. Don't be angry when a new customer arrives. That's so totally rude. Phoned in pad Thai with chicken for pick up. Phone answered promptly and was ready as I arrived. I liked it a lot. Good flavor and I'm anxious to try some other dishes. Portion was enough for two meals. Cost very close to $10 with tax. I have not had much luck with pad Thai in this area so I'm happy I've found my go to place. I'm not a huge fan of Asian food, but the food from this restaurant was pretty decent. Their green curry, spring rolls, and stir fries were great, not to mention the decor of the restaurant was very clean and professional. My only criticism was that our waitress didn't seem like she wanted me and my group to come since we came 30 min till closing, so I felt kinda rushed while eating. Ordered door dash pick up here..and they Didint think to update my order via the door dash app they have..so my order just sat there getting cold. My mussels had grit in them, and they were cold so they weren't fun to chew. Noodles were spicy even though I asked for not spicy. The only good part about the dish was the shrimp..but it's kinda hard to make a plain shrimp taste bad. Definitely will not be eating here again. And I do not understand all the good reviews either. Order food to go. Got the fried spring rolls. Which ended up being a batch of cabbage that was the consistency of mush. Almost like they had extra filling one day and decided to freeze it, then thaw it and use it again on another day. Took one bite and threw the rest away. Order the Pad Thai noddles as well. Not the right flat pad Thai noodles. These were much thinner and were a stuck together congealed mess. Hardly any sauce to flavor it or help the noodles from sticking together. Also had the Paneng Curry. The taste of the curry was good, waaay to spicy though and it was very thin, like soup thin. In less then 30 minutes my stomach started cramping horribly and I had to run to the bathroom. I was so sick feeling all I could do was lay down on the cool bathroom floor to feel better. I went to this restaurant after they'd been open for only 2 or 3 weeks, very excited to have a Thai restaurant so close to home, especially after the one I liked had closed recently. After selecting our dishes & ordering a couple sat at the table next to us & had a similar discussion on what they wanted, which sounded a lot like the conversation we had just had. A short while later the waiter came out with what I thought was our soup & stood for a second looking at our table to the folks next to us, he then placed the soup on the table belonging to the other couple. I thought that should have been ours but said nothing. After a few minutes the lady eating he soup asked her date why they had shrimp & not chicken, at that point I spoke up & told her because hey had gotten my soup by mistake. She laughed & said she would send it back but she would make sure they didn't bring me the exact same bowl, she then marked a leaf by tearing a pattern of some sort & hid it under a shrimp, she told the waiter she had the wrong soup & then informed him that she had put her utensil into the bowl after it had been in her mouth. A few minutes later he returned with 2 bowls of soup giving one to them & one to us. I lifted the shrimp & discovered the same leaf she had marked. I then decided I'd had enough before I'd eaten anything that I could be charged for. As I got up to leave she told the waiter what she had done and his response was that he had not informed the kitchen staff of what she had told him? Either way, I left and will not be returning- that's gross that they would serve me food that had been in someone else's mouth!!! Too bad for me, I now have to go all the way to Nevada city if I want Thai! read more

I have been here several times. The service is always SLOW. Normally one person serving no matter how many customers. Also, you are rarely asked if you need anything and it takes forever for the server to walk by again so you can ask. If you forget to ask for something plan on waiting 5-10 minutes again. I have literally had to walk toward the back where they cook and say "hello" to get someones attention. I understand short staffed, but this place has been this way pre-covid. Food is good, not great, but good. I had the sour coconut soup, it was decent, I do not think I am a good judge for this soup, it is popular, but I just didn't like the sour part. I normally get the green curry, which I like, but again, I have had better in many places. I also got the pad noodles which were mushy, Taste of Thai in town has the BEST pad thai noodles in my opinion. My worst complaint about my experience last night was the fact that they added 4 dollars to my bill when they did my credit card. I have the receipt and it was under 60 dollars including tip, and they charged almost 64 dollars. That always makes me leery because I wonder if this was an accident or intentional. None of the numbers were close to each other so I doubt a typo error. Anyway, everyone has different taste and this is my opinion, but watch your bill. read more

We ended here quite by accident tonight, having intended to try a new India Restaurant near by, which didn't open until 5. I was prepared to be disappointed, since we'd heard all kinds of good things about the other place, but boy, I could not have been more wrong! Our food was excellent! 3 of us, 3 different dishes, and we loved them all. Perfectly seasoned, and the vegetables could not have been better prepared. Our waitress was very friendly, and service was prompt. Still have to try the Indian place, but we ALL agreed we will be back to Chandara for Thai! read more

Always look forward to a new Thai place in town. I've seen quite a few come and go. My favorite is still Panoy, but that's Laotian so can't quite compare the 2. Stopped in for lunch yesterday and had the peanut sauce dish with beef and the other had a red curry ( medium) . The medium is probably more a medium ( plus) as it was quite spicy. Overall service was quick, food came out quickly, quality was probably better than the downtown Thai place and pricing was reasonable. Will be back. Best of luck finding additional staff as the restaurant next door is also looking for help along with just about every other restaurant in town. read more

We are not Thai food experts, but we enjoy healthy flavorful food. Chandra Thai's food has not disappointed us the half dozen times we have dined there. The convenience of parking, distance from our home & dining availability makes us prefer this Thai restaurant over the others. The atmosphere is very pleasant inside with a comfortable updated decor. We usually order the same dishes that we've enjoyed, Egg Rolls, Pad Thai & Pineapple Curry. We also loved the fried banana desert. The food tastes fresh & it gets served quickly. The unfortunate part of dining at Chandra is the wait staff. Besides the one very friendly woman who may be the owner, the other servers & wait staff are just not friendly. One woman in particular seems very serious & unhappy. Many times they have not asked our choice of meat when ordering food, or preferred spiciness of dishes. It's quite odd how unfriendly they are, but we like the food so we keep going back. read more

First off I love the way they redid this space and the décor. It is really beautiful without being over the top. The staff is friendly and gives good service. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time for 12:30 pm Tuesday. I ordered the coconut milk soup and yellow curry. Both mild as I am a wimp. The soup came out and it had a lot of dried red chilis floating around n it and bits throughout the liquid. The vegetables in it weren't cooked at all except the onions. I don't really like lukewarm, raw mushrooms. There were also some raw tomatoes floating in it. My main problem that it was sickening sweet. I mean so sweet and spicy that I had to send it back. I could handled the spicy but not the extra sweet. They asked if I wanted a redo. I said sure, why not? Well it wasn't as spicy but I could tell that the stock solution was as sweet. They tried to mask it with either lemon grass, lemon or lime. Bleh. I didn't send it back but will never order that again! The yellow curry was sweet too! It had very few vegies in it and the potatoes were undercooked. It had a couple of carrot slices and LOTS of white onion. The salad they served w/lunch special was a few broken leaves of iceburg with some sweet, syrupy dressing on it. I have quite a bit of experience eating Thai food in the Bay area. It does not have to be sweet, to be good. I feel like I wasted almost $25 on a lunch that was subpar. It would be great if they consider looking at their recipes. I don't think people like food this sweet. Nasty and makes me feel bad. Taste of Thai is much better and is the little place on 174. Sopa is often too sweet too. read more

Pad Thai should have shrimp chicken and tofu - now choice of one ? No flavor except ramping up the heat

I enjoyed the food and the service was warm and pleasant. One small thing I would respectfully suggest is that they replace the recessed fluorescent lights with warmer yellow ones. I looked over to a side dining room that had warm yellower lighting and it looked much better. The decor was nice, but the worst Thai food I have ever had. The fresh spring rolls were certainly not fresh, tasted like they were made from day old salad mix. The pad thai looked like spaghetti and was drowning in sauce, pad thai is usually my favorite dish but I could not finish it. It tasted like dog food. The yellow curry was just ok, but it was watery. I can't understand how this place has an avg of four stars right now. Some folks in the foothills don't knpw any better I guess. There are far better options in GV and NC. Just don't go. It was such a waste of money and time. I cannot believe someone said the service was great. It was below horrible. We had to go get the low-english speaking waitress 3 times for drinks, condiments and clean glasses. water glass had lipstick all over it. Food was mediocre at best and in order to fit my soup into the to go container the girl actually poured the broth out, which was the only good part. Obviously will not go back. read more
