Food is good, customer service is good, and restaurant is very neat and clean. I don't really have much to say about this place because it was extraordinary or bad at all. Chang's Garden has good Chinese food at a fair price. In SGV this gives it 3-stars, although I would probably give it 4 stars anywhere else there wasn't 1 million other options nearby. The food is a little pricey and the portions aren't particularly large. So you get what you pay for, which is a little unusual for a Chinese restaurant (where I'm used to getting more than I pay for). The fried seaweed fish is good, but not the best. The triple chow mein was standard. Their fish chowder was good but pricey. Lastly, their shrimp w/ pineapple in mayo is an interesting alternative to walnut shrimp with mayo. This little plaza houses my family's fave May Mei. Today, we decided to try something different, and we walked into this Shanghainese restaurant. The highs: tan tan mien, the lamb with green onion, the spare ribs on spinach, and the Shanghai rice cake. The rice cake was hot off the wok. Chewy and browned - perfect. =) Tan tan mien are noodles in sesame sauce. Chang's Garden version is drowned with the sauce - thick, heavy, delicious sauce. We ate it with the thinly sliced lamb green onion- it complemented it so well, everyone on the table agreed these two need to be ordered together. The spare ribs on spinach was sweet. But I've had this dish before where it was candy sweet. CG's ribs taste more balanced. The portion didn't look like a lot, but it was. We got fried rice as well- won't order this next time because it's boring. They've got so much tasty stuff. read more

The short of it is that it is only okay, but extremely expensive. Funny considering all of the newspaper clippings littering the waiting area. Made me think that may be I ordered wrong. The best dish was the Tong Po Pork (think extremely soft, tender, and tasty pork belly, or essentially tasty pork fat). Everything else was just blah (Fish Chowder, Sauteed Eel) or not good at all (melon with fungus - something was just wrong with the melon itself). So my husband and I wanted Sinbala today except the line was too long so we ended up at Chang's Garden, we didn't order there lunch specials but we got Beef noodle soup which was about $8 and Beef wrap in green onion pancake which was also $8ish. Out of most of the Chinese restaurants I have tried in this area, Chang's seems to be the most accommodating for large demanding groups (AKA my obnoxious family). We made reservations for a large private room in back and a huge lunch order was swiftly taken by staff. Being a member of an extremely demanding and hungry family, I had to make it known that I wanted the Xiao Long Bao. Sadly, I was pretty disappointed by how soupless and bland they ended up being. Looks like I will have to continue my quest for the perfect soup dumpling. The dishes that stood out to me were the lions head meatballs (a decent stand-in for my mother's version) because they had a great gravy and rice noodle accompaniment, the Schezwan steamed beef had great heat, super fresh shrimp with green tea leaves, and crispy beef & green been roll ups from the dim sum menu. I honestly can't understand how the staff got our food out to us so quickly with such a huge order and a bustling regular lunch crowd. Servers were literally stacking dishes on our lazy Susan faster than we could eat, which was probably my fault because I started a discussion on this current season of Breaking Bad. I personally think that you can do better in the area, but my parents love this place. All of the seafood here is relatively fresh, and they are pretty generous with their veggies. Nestled in the heart of Arcadia, Chang's Garden is often overlooked with restaurants like Ding Tai Fung nearby. But for gourmet Chinese food that you can't get in alot of places, this restaurant about as good as it gets. Since Chang's Garden is more suited for a large gathering of friends and family sitting around in their round tables with the turntable in the center, I didn't get to eat there too often. However, each time I dined over there, I always left with my stomach full and a smile on my face. They have alot of good dishes there, but my favorites are the Seaweed Fried Fish and the Tung Po Pork. Yes, you can have take-outs as well, but sitting in the restaurant while sipping tea and enjoying food with your family is just so Chinese, and a greater experience than taking the food home. If I have to deduct a star, it'd be because on a busy night, the waitresses can be overworked and service may suffer as a result. Also, because most entrees on their menu are rather pricey, you often have to make it a special occasion to eat there with your family. But for people who crave authetic, traditional Chinese food that can't be found in those Chinese take-out places, Chang's Garden can show why Chinese cruisine can't be beat. read more

I grew up in the SGV, and for some reason don't really like Chinese food. The food here however, is delicious. Fried fish, pork, shrimp, etc.. its all very very good 5/5. The service, like all restaurants in the SGV, could be improved upon, but is adequate. Prices are higher than normal, but the quality of the ingredients in their dishes really make a difference. I went to one of my go-to Chinese seafood restaurants but they were closed for renovations so I yelped to find a Chinese restaurant nearby and Yelp said this place was good and one review said it was the best Chinese restaurant in LA so I headed over. Plus it was packed when I got there. I had very high hopes by then. The service is good for an Asian restaurant and the workers speak English very well. They give you a gross plate of peanuts for an appetizer. Yuck! The food I ordered wasn't good and it was greasy plus it was way overpriced. I ended up spending $20 for an appetizer with entree that I hardly ate. Plus I got heartburn right away. read more

I have been to this place many times--whenever I go to Arcadia to do something, I try to stop by there. In terms of service it's probably a tad better than average Chinese restaurants. There are a few dishes there that are ALWAYS good, such as the famed seaweed fried fish and the pickled vegetable with bean curd & edamame beans. Some of their soups (winter melon & clam, bamboo shoots & Chinese ham; etc.) are good too--and very generously portioned. However if you are ordering something that is NOT often recommended and NOT Shanghai-ness style, they could be terrible, like the lamb soup we ordered the last time. They are awesome and not to be missed. Literally every table in the joint ordered them. You would be hard-pressed to find much fault with them. Chang's Garden is a unique genre of Chinese cuisine that specializes in fare from Shanghai and Hangzhou. If you're wanting to take a break from the traditional Cantonese, Taiwanese, or Sichuan places around the SGV, this is the place to come discover a different type of Chinese cuisine. They do have some standard dishes but I would recommend you try what they specialize in first such as their Long Jing Shrimp (shrimp cooked with tea leaves), Madam Sung's Fish Chowder (a very light but flavorful and chunky fish soup), Snow cabbage with peas and bean sheet (a very traditional Chinese dish, clean on the palate), and their Sea Bass (cooked with crispy yellow beans, very interesting dish). I did not get chance to try their seaweed fried fish but a few of the other guests ordered it and it looks quite promising too. Make sure to order hot tea and request their PuErh. The restaurant itself is always full with lots of people, signs that it is a popular location, and the staff are polite and patient in explaining their dishes. It won't dent your wallet as well. Really another wonderful Chinese restaurant in the SGV that specializes in dishes from Hangzhou. I urge you to try this place out if you haven't before and keep an open mind as this is very traditional Chinese fare that your palate will likely not have experienced before. read more

Whereas Cantonese food tends to be seafood-oriented, and Szechuan/Sichauan food tends to be more dry and spicy, Shanghainese cuisine is more saucy and savory and - dare I say? - fattening. Must-have Shanghai dishes are the fatty pork rump (braised), the tofu sheets with salty cabbage and soy beans, and the fish in brown sauce. Also suggest the sticky rice "Zhong" with pork in the middle. Make sure to get some small cold dishes to start (the salty ham, cold chicken and jellyfish are great). I love Shanghainese food and I loved the food here, so 5 stars! Also, the grocery store in the same mall is uncharacteristically clean for a chinese grocery establishment, and the wares are fresh.
