My husband and I had really good food here last weekend. I had the combo #1. We both loved it. Note to everyone--the portions are huge!! A combo can easily feed 2-3 adults. We basically took 2 full meals home and we were stuffed. Why only 4 stars then, right?! The service was friendly but they were too busy and my husband went the whole dinner without water because she never came back :( Also, both of our tea cups were broken on the side and bottom and leaking everywhere. Ordered takeout- an order over $50.00, but when you ask for hot mustard you would have thought you'd asked for gold, only would give one with 4 dishes ordered and was put out asking for that one . Take out tonight 10/19 was horrible. Sweet and sour pork was just cold pieces of fried pork. No peppers,onions or pineapple as advertised. Pot stickers were moist dough balls. Chan's is consistent, fresh, fast and plentiful Chinese food....in Bend. We love to hit it when we have a busy few days ahead of us, so we can eat leftovers for days. And I'm a bit of a 'restaurant canary'....if preparation is substandard, I will get ill. Chan's doesn't use MSG and I've never had a bad reaction to their food, eat-in OR call-ahead-pick-up-take-out. I am very very very picky about my Chinese food. I just moved here about a year and a half ago and just about gave up eating anymore Chinese food when a friend of mine told me to go check out Chan's. Needless to say I loved it!!!! The food was really good so moist and succulent. The sweet and sour sauce was divine and usually what I am most picky about. Have eaten a few times here since the rebuild. In the past year, the quality of the food has slowly declined. A Couple nights ago, my date and I had dinner there. Her food was okay. Mine was inedible. "Greasy/Slimy" is the best way to describe it. So I ordered another entree from the menu. It was better. Not great, but at least one could eat it. What really irked me, was the treatment. Was 1/2 hour before closing, and the lady that manages the front kept instructing the poor waitress to encourage us to leave, by bringing take out boxes and asking if she could box up our meal for us - my date was about 1/2 way through hers and I just got my new entree just 5 minutes before. Then, I get a bill. Not itemized at all. Just a total. I asked for an itemized receipt. The manager lady at first claimed she couldn't do it and didn't understand english. I pressed the issue and you guessed it - she charged me for the food that was disgusting/horrible/belonged in a landfill. I told her I didn't feel that I should have to pay for the food that was unfit to eat. She got very aggressive and argumentative with me, saying "You Order Food - You Pay! - No Refund!" So, rather than continue to argue with someone who will not budge one bit, I paid the bill. This will be the last time you will see my hard-earned, small business owner money! I made sure to tip the poor waitress (who was visibly embarrassed) 20 percent and left. My message to this business? "You Cook Poor Food - You Keep your Poor food!" Maybe when they get under water again, in the business end of things, they will burn the place down again...... In the meantime - try actually cleaning the place - it wasn't exactly the picture of cleanliness, either. read more

Well what is there to say? We have been on the hunt for a great Chinese restaurant in Bend. We stopped in after we saw a full parking lot. We have all been sick and we're really craving traditional wonton soup. I don't know why I can't seem to find this? We went into the restaurant. It seemed clean and well organized. I ordered two wonton soups and Kung pao chicken. The soups were 8.50 each. Expensive but worth it after we have been sick and that's what we were craving. The take out order took about 10 minutes. We got home and the disappointment started as soon as we opened the bags. Instead of wontons in broth the soups were packed with vegetables. Big chucks that almost looked like leftovers. After we finally dig out all of the filler we found two more or three wontons. That was a lot of work to get to what the soup is called! The wonton looked good, I bit into it, to my disgust it was filled with shrimp!! Not that I don't like shrimp but not in my wontons. Nasty! The Kung Pao chicken wasn't much better. The chicken wasn't firm and was very slippery. Not the kind of consistency you want in Chinese food. Needless to say it was all thrown out. Defiantly won't be heading back. read more

I'll give em 5 stars!! Don't get too excited it's pretty much the traditional Chinese American food. Every town has them. Chans does it right. Just went there with my daughter and she loved there fried rice. We ordered there pepper chicken it was good very flavorful and a big portion. Really like the garlic taste and also had cilantro in it. It was all white chicken. Also ordered some mothers chicken. It was deep fried with a sweet spicy sause. No very spicy but it turned out good. It was nice to have some of each. This place isn't gourmet so don't get your expectations up high. It's good for what you pay for. I say the best American Chinese in Bend. I haven't found any authentic Chinese yet here but for what it is I was quite happy. read more

Listen to the recent reviews! We went in with a large group of 14. Seated promptly, probably the best thing about the place was the hot tea. Soup was lit good, but we were hungry and ate it. I ordered the "house special" sizzling hot plate with the waitresses recommendation. It came out in a regular plate, no sizzle to be found. I asked if it was the right dish, and a 'hot plate' was brought out to our table and I was asked if I wanted my meal transferred into it. My meal was a slimy mix of tepid temperature chewy meats and vegetables. There were two orders of hot and sour chicken (safe bet right?) but no, the chicken came out lukewarm. Both entrees. When you take a bite you get a greasy, occasionally coldish bite. Noodles were slimy. No flavor. Just gross. We left most of our food uneaten, I didn't even make the kids eat their food. Stopped by Trader Joe's on our way home to Portland and got some snacks to eat since we were still hungry. Waste of $$$. Maybe we are spoiled by decent Chinese food in Portland, but I was extremely disappointed. It's Christmas Eve and I'm stuck on the wrong side of the storm-battered Cascade mountains, missing the family dinner. Ever an opportunist, I decided it was a good night to play out the Christmas-meal-at-a-Chinese-restaurant fantasy I've been harboring since watching "A Christmas Story" so many years ago. Though Peking duck wasn't available, I was happy to settle for the fillet of sole with green beans and black bean sauce. In the holiday spirit, I paired this with a bottle of Tsingtao. Right away I was served a bowl of hot and sour soup. This small starter was surprisingly tasty, with crunchy fresh sprouts and celery. Shortly after my soup, I was presented with a massive plate, mounded with green beans and big chunks of sole. Over steamed rice, half of this plate satisfied my appetite. It was good, but lacked the excitement I have come to expect from Chinese food. I can't complain, however, because the service was delightful and speedy, the place warm and clean, and the whole meal (plus leftovers!) fell under $15. There aren't too many options for Chinese food in Bend and while it may not be the best, this is one of the best. The service is about average. I've been coming here for years and decided to write review after my most recent visit because the service was better than usual and I think they are making a conscious effort to improve upon their customers experience. But I really think Chan should stop using old oil that tastes like it had been reused for numbers of time. I spent $30 on their food and all my family and I could tasted was old , stinky oil. This use to be one of my favorite places but after last night I will never go again. There were four of us and we ordered pot stickers, a beef dish and a shrimp dish. The pot stickers were tasteless and cold in the middle, we did not get any sauce with them because the waitress said the kitchen hadn't prepared any which is strange since they come with sauce??? I have been around the block a few times and Chan's is consistently the best Chinese food I have every had. Wonderful selection, great variety, very tasty and they will be very responsive to special requests. I have eaten at Chan's since before it was Chan's (Originally the China Ranch back in 1983 or '84 when Chan purchased it) and Chan himself pretty much did everything from seating you, taking your order, running into the back to cook it up and serving you with a smile. I first ate at Chan's almost 10 years ago while on vacation in Sunriver, and I have eaten here every time I have been back since then. The portions here are huge, one dish is large enough to feed three people! The prices are also really low. The food is great, there is a wide variety of dishes, and I have never been disappointed. We ended up throwing away all of the food that we ordered after a couple of bites. The takeout portions were admittedly huge, as mentioned in some reviews, but not in a generous family-style kind of way. Instead it seemed (and tasted) like they were trying to pawn off all of last weeks leftover chicken on us. Everything that had been fried tasted like rancid oil. If you like good chinese food combined with explosive diarrhea, then Chans is the place for you. I did a quick search on phone for good restaurants in Bend as I was getting into town and Chans came up as fairly highly rated! Chinese sounded good! So the first warning sign should have been the fact i had to park next to a dumpster behind Chans that apparently is filled with rotting carcasses. The 2nd warning sign would have had to been the "NEW MENU" sign on the front door (makes you think what happened to the old menu?) But, I was hungry and Chinese sounded so good. I ordered the cashew chicken, which every Chinese person on planet earth learns to make by the age of 2. They coupled it with a free bowl of hot n sour soup and some fried rice! It all tasted pretty good, the soup was great, the cashew chicken quite good, the fried rice was more like Uncle Ben's but passable. I wolfed down as much as I could, paid the bill and got in the truck to continue on my journey north on Hwy 97. About Redmond, the warning signs from my stomach began. Kind of like an internal explosion, like you ate a box of Pop Rocks and drank a pepsi. But the moment passed and I didn't think anymore on it. BIG MISTAKE! As I neared Madras my internal combustion was starting to really hit its stride! I passed a gas station and thought "maybe i should pull in here and take care of business" but decided instead to soldier on. Another potentially fatal mistake because about a block later my insides told me they wanted to be outside. I raced into the McDonalds, cutting off a family of hungry people at the door and bolted to the bathroom JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME! My advice to travelers that eat at Chans is to have an emergency preparedness plan. Figure that the McDonalds in Madras is the very limit of human endurance and plan your next stop either in Redmond or at the southern end of Madras, like Burger King or Bi-Mart. read more

I can't believe so many people like this place. Maybe it's because the choices for Chinese food are very limited in town, and people just don't know any better. I've lived in Bend 10 years. Ate at Chan's when we first moved here. Both the hubby and I spent the rest of the night on the toilet. Gross. Just tried it again. Or I did. Hubby ate a bean and cheese burrito. I have one word to describe my latest experience at Chan's: BROWN. The food looked brown, smelled brown, and tasted brown. Veggies were limp and soft. Noodles were slimy and sticky. Everything tasted the same. Pineapple chicken claimed to be spicy. Nope. Mother's chicken was indescribable. The orange chicken was so flavorless that I couldn't even tell what it was until I bit into a rubbery, dried out piece of orange peel. The best thing was the spring rolls, which made me wish that was all I ordered. The potstickers were heavy, flavorless pork bombs. We will never eat here again. I'd rather eat McDonald's. Thank goodness we finally got a Panda Express. Veggies are crisp and bright. Kung Pao and Sweetfire chicken (pineapple chicken) are super flavorful. You can see them fresh wokking their food. Skip Chan's. Eat at Panda Express instead. Where the only brown is the steak, the teriyaki sauce, and the soy sauce. read more

Recently we went to Chan's in hopes of a nice meal, however we received nothing of the sort. We were seated at our table and asked about 3 minutes later if we were ready to order. We had asked if we could substitute something different in a combo plate, the waitress who barely spoke English said she would have to go ask the manager. Came back and told us no, because they were two different sauces. Then she proceeded to give us an option, which we agreed to, then came back and told us the cook said no! We then told her we wanted to cancel our entire order and all she said was ok. No accommodation whatsoever. We will never go back or spend another penny there. We even asked if we could have a half portion of an entree....NOPE!!!! read more

My family and I were visiting from out of town and stumbled upon this restaurant only because we needed some food in our bellies. But, I can tell you that this was some of the best, if not the best, Asian cuisine I have ever been served. The service was impeccable, and our waiter was so friendly, funny, and attentive. The prices, in regards to the huge portions you receive, are amazing! As of the portion sizes, I have never seen a bigger entree plate come out in my life. The three of us ordered 2 entrees to split, and we did not even finish half of it!! The food quality was great as well! The leftovers will definitely feed us for at least the next 2 meals. Our waiter recommended the "Mother's Chicken" as one of our entrees, and wow. The flavors were just perfection with just the right amount of everything!
