When I did stand in front of a staff member working the front, he just continued to do what he was doing and pretty much ignored me until I said something. I guess you just have to walk up and talk to get his attention. (New York City delis even greet you...so perhaps it was an off day for the gentleman). I overheard and witnessed other stuff that was said, but anyways.
