After several years, a return visit to Checkers Old Munchen on a Friday for an early dinner was not the same as my first visit. I cook homemade German meals from scratch regularly at home and was in Germany for 6 weeks several months ago. I made a reservation and we were seated promptly. The decor inside provides the feel of sitting in a locale in Germany. The wait staff was friendly & attentive. The bread basket of pumpernickel bread and pretzel bites arrived first. The pretzels were not fresh, wrinkled from the salt from the day before. The pumpernickel was fresh. My chicken schnitzel was unseasoned, over fried and dry. The sauerkraut tasted like it came from a jar. The brown gravy served with the chicken schnitzel was unseasoned and tasted like box gravy. The other Germans in my party were also disappointed with their meal. Unfortunately, I don't plan on returning for another try. I was so excited to dine here but left disappointed. Second time here and I must say we loved it just as much as the first time! Only regret is that we didn't come more often before moving from pompano beach. Both visits waitresses have been very pleasant while pretty busy I must add. They start you off with pretzels, rye bread, mustard and butter. Pretty yummy. The pork schnitzel is a winner. So we had to get it again with the mash and the gravy on the side. We have a thing for adding our own sauces. We don't like soggy food so 90% of the time we opt for sauce on the side. The pork is cooked to perfection with the perfect batter. This time we tried the Bavarian onion apple soup and it was like the best French onion soup I've ever had! (Remember how I said we don't like soggy...) so we got the bread/croutons that go in the soup on the side. They were crunchy, spicy and delicious. We also tried the potato salad this time. It's served hot or cold we got it hot and it was also really tasty! If you're in pompano beach and want a delicious hot meal you must check them out! Service was fine. Ambience was fine (although the chairs are pretty rickety). The food was lousy, unfortunately, there's no easy way to say that other than the food was lousy. I preface my comments with the fact I lived in Germany for three years, and I've had authentic German food. The appearance of the food looked good. The sausage platter was almost an edible. I think out of four or five types of sausage maybe two were decent. The rest had cartilage and other things like that and it really made it an unappetizing eating experience. I had the Pork Shank (easily the smallest I've ever had) and it was tender and cooked well but it tasted old. The gravy on top was nasty. The spatzle was drenched in butter and you couldn't taste the pasta. Just butter. The red cabbage was an overdose of vinegar. Maybe Mondays are bad nights to go. Not sure but it was lousy. read more

Come for the German draft beer but skip the food. Yesterday was my second time visiting Checkers and it will most likely be my last due to their food. Food: I like the gesture of the complimentary bread basket that comes with sliced pumpernickel and pieces of pretzels but both are served cold and the pretzel is always soft in texture. The onion and apple soup is the best thing I have tasted here as it tastes like a traditional onion soup with an added sweetness I will attribute to the apple. The pork shank looks impressive and is an overwhelming chunk of meat but sadly I left half of my dish behind (which I never do) due to the deep fried meat being too greasy and dry, I don't know how that's possible. The catch of the day salad looked promising as well but the sheer amount of dill dusted over the ENTIRE salad was ridiculous, the fish was very tender although I would have liked a crispy crust instead of the egg based crust that was soggy. Drinks: They probably have the largest if not top 3 largest German beer selections on draft in Broward County. The staff was able to recommend me good choices both visits which is very helpful. Draft beers come in the traditional .5L & 1L sizes. Service: By chance I have been served by the same waitress during my two visits. My waitress was able to answer my questions on the menu and provide great service. My food arrived within a reasonable amount of time. Location: The restaurant is small but comfy and is adorned by steins and other German flair. Free parking is available on the side and behind the building. Very nice quaint German restaurant. Service was amazing, wasn't too crowded. They have inside and outside seating with some music outside. We spent a few days in Berlin and wanted to see how the food compared at old munchen. Have to say was probably better at old munchen. We had fried cheese app, Wienerschnitzel, Schweinshaxen, potato salad, kraut and some beer! Wow! All the food was amazing. We also had the apple streusel and German chocolate cake. We on the other hand tried their sausage sampler which was amazing, the cabbage rolls with a side of dumplings & steamed veggies, they were the best ive tried this side of the Reine, and the roast pork with spaetzl and also a dumpling. I frequent Checkers Old Munchen German Restaurant probably six months out of the year; yet, due to the pandemic i have not been back in over a year. Being German, I enjoy eating good German food as a way I remember how my parents and grandparents cooked for me. Anyway, today I arrived around 2:30 pm to a relatively empty restaurant. As I was by myself, I sat at the bar. I ordered Amber Oktoberfest Beer, Beer and Cheese Soup, Veal Schnitzel (the house special) with red cabbage and potato dumpling, a Macchiato White Coffee and a homemade Apple Strudel served with plenty of whipped cream and a scope of vanilla ice cream. The beer was served in a tall chilled glass which was very refreshing. The entree was delicious; yet, the dumpling was bland. (Note: I am use to tasting more seasonings.) Oh, the bread was a good selection. The Macchiato White Coffee was surprisingly good considering it came out of a machine. Yet, I was somewhat disappointed with the taste if the Apple Strudel. It, too, was bland. The Carmel Sauce on top of the whipped cream gave the Strudel more favoriting, but bland is still bland. I am use to tasting it with more cinnamon mixed inside the filling. Yet, again, due to my upbringing, I prefer a different taste. The service was fine. The food server got my order correct and server my meal promptly. She did not engage me in idol chit chat which perfectly acceptable by me. So, I give her credit for "reading me." The restaurant and bar area was clean. The only thing I found disturbing was the constant banging for the first 15 minutes that I was there. The noise may have come from the kitchen; yet, it was loud and a distraction. My gf and I came here for dinner a couple of weekends ago, and we had a very good experience. I had not had german food or beer since my trip to Munich in 2016, and this place brought me back to that time. We started off with bratwurst & knackwurst sausages w/ sour cabbage. This dish was very rich and flavorful; a very good starter. For main dishes, I had the veal schitzel w/ spaetzel pasta & red cabbage, and my gf had the beef gulash w/ vegetables. Both dishes were excellent, offering a wonderful balance of flavors and textures. We finished off with an apple strudel, which is a tried and true dessert that you can't go wrong with. The service and ambiance were very nice ad well. While German cuisine may not be the most popular in south Florida, what it has to over is great, so don't underestimate it. I met my buddy at the restaurant to take him out for his birthday today. I was here for a friends Christmas dinner a few year's ago. I found the food incredible then & was the same today. Carol was our server and so sweet & attentive. She really made it very pleasant. There was a good vibe in the dining room. We ordered Weiner Schnitzel, I had it ala holestein two fried eggs on top. If you feel like German cuisine, Checkers won't disappoint you. Their schnitzel is on point, their red cabbage absolutely delicious, the hot potatoe salad similar to my Mother's and their apple strudel delicious. Their spaetzle is hit and miss (just my personal opinion) ‐ sometimes a little too mushy ie overcooked. They serve pumpernickel bread and pretzel pieces as a before snack....a nice touch to hold you over until your dish comes. My ultimate favorite beer (and I'm not a beer drinker) is their Grapefruit beer.... so refreshing any time of year. A sleepy local eatery which is family owned. I enjoy going to listen to local bands on the weekend. The food is authentic and homemade. The Schnitzel and the Spatzel is what you would eat in Germany. I know I've been. Today for lunch I satisfied my craving for their potato pancakes. They have it on the menu as an appetizer. Fat chance! There are 4 full-size pancakes and I didn't have any room for anything else. I come periodically for different dishes depending on what I'm craving. It's always good food and genuinely friendly service. I used to drink beer but can't any more. You won't find any IPAS here just good authentic German beers. I have wanted to try this restaurant forever but never got around to it. It came back on my radar when I visited Untapped which is the outdoor food and art festival that Pompano holds on the first Friday of the month. Checkers always has a tent in the back where for a very reasonable price they serve up bratwurst and a few other items. When I found a Groupon for $15 for $30 worth of food at the restaurant plus with an extra 20 percent off because of a sale and Roy and Julie said they would go it seemed like the stars had finally aligned for a visit. I was a little late for my dinner because of parking. There are a couple of restaurants and stores in this area and only a small lot out back. Parking is so bad that certain spots are marked with names and tow signs. At night almost all of the other businesses are closed which I wasn't aware of so it seems like people take their spots. Since the lot behind the restaurant was full after a lot of discussion with my daughter I took the chance and parked at a closed realty office. I was kind of worried about it the whole night but it worked out okay. Once I entered the restaurant I was immediately charmed by the interior and some of the stress of the parking situation started to melt away. The restaurant is two small rooms with a bar that spans both of them. The walls are lined with various beer steins and other German kitschy touches. As my daughter said it looks the Germany pavilion at Epcot. Thankfully Julie had the foresight to make reservations. If she hadn't we wouldn't have had a table and it was a weeknight. On the table when I arrived was a bread basket which always takes me to my happy place. it was filled with a fresh brown bread, soft pretzels, butter, and mustard. Roy was drinking a grapefruit beer which after he generously let me taste I immediately ordered. The menu had some many mouth watering beef, chicken, and pork choices it was hard to pick just one. I even saw a fish dish. After a lot of deliberation I settled on the Sauerbraten and my daughter had the pork Schnitzel. My pot roast was tender and covered in a vinegary sauce. For my sides I chose the spatzel and warn German potato salad with it's tangy mustard dressing. Other side choices include mashed potatoes, potato salad, vegetable of the day, red cabbage, and sauerkraut. The pork Schnitzel had a crispy exterior with a flavorful brown sauce. I loved both dishes. The portions were huge and I had some leftovers to take home. My daughter who wasn't even sure if she liked German food before coming here cleaned her plate. I was glad that she got to experience some of the food of her heritage and that she enjoyed it so much. I loved my dinner so much that I couldn't leave without sampling their dessert. They had what you would expect to find like Black Forest cake and apple strudel with ice cream. My daughter loves chocolate cake so we went with the German chocolate. They thoughtfully provided a fork for everyone at the table to have a taste. The cake was delicious with an interesting sugar crunch in the frosting. When it came to pay there was no problem with using the Groupon. They didn't even mind that we used two separate ones at our table. Our server just scanned them and applied the discount to the bill. While we were waiting to pay the table behind us celebrated a birthday. The birthday celebrant was brought gifts from Checkers in the form of a T Shirt, a glass, and a shot of Jägermeister. The restaurant turned off the lights and everyone sang Happy Birthday. This looks like a really fun place to celebrate your birthday. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Checker's. It was worth the wait but I don't intend to wait long to visit again thanks to the fact that they even provided us with discount offers for a future visit. Even if you aren't a German food connoisseur the menu here has dishes that would appeal to anyone. I am so glad Julie and Roy gave me the push I needed to finally dine here. The mediocre service detracted from our dinner experience. The place is really busy (especially during dinner time). But, we had more than a 20-minute wait with a reservation. We were seated with people who had just walked in and had no reservations. It was almost like I had to remind the hostess that we were still waiting. Our order was taken along with another table's. We waited 30 minutes for our meals; they waited about 10 minutes. Others, after us, got their meals earlier. I asked for lemons and was first told there was none. I pointed to all the people around me with lemon wedges in their glasses. Then, I was told, "we have to cut some." Now to the food. I am not a fan of schnitzel. It seemed to be very popular here. People were diving into their fried swatches and pouring gravy over them. The potato pancakes were a disappointment. They were more like hash browns, costing a whopping $8 for four. I guess I was expecting latkes. The onion-apple soup was lacking the visibility and the taste of the apple. I adored the stuffed cabbage. It was delicious and melted in your mouth. So did the spaetzle. My daughter liked her black forest chicken. My husband got the sampler and was not impressed by it, but ate it all. The desserts were far from the tasty stellar German sweets I was expecting (black forest and German chocolate cake). Should you try it? I say it is worth a try. Especially if you have a Groupon (gives you a small discount). We will go back, but not soon. Hubby wants to try the pork loin. I will get the stuffed cabbage again, so will my daughter.
