This little homemade sandwich shop with old fashion candy and sodas, the nicest people to serve you and the best roast pork sandwich anywhere. Soooooo good. But today, my experience was elevated. I got there oatmeal cookie. I'm not a fan of the oatmeal cookie. But I'm a huge fan of there's. I my gosh. It hard to put in words the taste. It sticky sweet but not too sweet. It doesn't stick to your teeth but it so good when your eating them. I haven't had a bad experience or bad food at all. When I'm in the area, this is where I'm going. Oh, they have deviled eggs. Stopped by right before closing time after reading all these yelp reviews ranting about their famous oatmeal cookies and am very glad we did so. The worker offered us samples of the cookies before we invested in two, which we quickly devoured. Flourless, butterless, but lacking nothing a cookie needs. I don't know if they're cookies, or more like brittle because they taste like gooey, buttery, vanilla-y caramel with the satisfying chew of oats added in. We found this spot on yelp on our way to a wine and painting event at Hotel La Jolla. We were hungry and decided to stop by for lunch. This shop is located in the quaint and beautiful downtown La Jolla. The shop is small. We walked in and looked at the menus. Took the man at the counter a while to greet us though. The store had some fun things for little kids like cookies and candies and beach toys. Great for little kids to take to the beach nearby. As for the sandwich, I ordered the turkey and cranberry sandwich. It was good. It reminded me of the thanksgiving sandwich from Earl of Sandwich but Earl's has stuffing in theirs. The turkey was okay but the cranberry added a nice sweetness to it. My friend tried my sandwich but he said the turkey was dry... It's turkey. The sandwich had a nice cheese that made it creamy. Overall it was good although maybe the addition of stuffing would have added a different dimension to the sandwich. As for price, it was a bit expensive but affordable at under $10 a sandwich. The waves sucked, there were way too many people in the water and I got a hell of a sunburn. Oh, and I LOVED it. Astrid sat in the sun and read while I played around in the waves for a few hours. By the time I got out of the water at noon, I was starving. Instead of losing my parking place, I walked into the village looking for something good to eat. I passed by a pizza place, a burger stand and an Italian restaurant. Nothing looked good. Then I spotted the Cheese Shop offering freshly made sandwiches. BINGO. I ordered a hot pastrami on rye served with mustard and red onion and a torpedo, turkey, ham and cotto salami served with provolone cheese, tomato, shredded lettuce, mayo and mustard on a French roll. I threw in a couple bags of Maui Onion and Jalapeño Dirty Chips and some micro-brewed root beer and orange cream soda. They had a bowl of roasted peanuts in the shell out for customers while they waited. It was a nice gesture. Eating the sandwiches back at the beach with the sun beating down, the waves crashing and the salt air swirling around us, I was reminded that it is oh-so-cool to eat sandwiches at the beach. It's the perfect venue for sandwich eating. I highly recommend it. I'll definitely hit up the Cheese Shop the next time I spend a day at La Jolla Cove. First time at this quaint, little shop and we liked it a lot. It's a little quirky and cluttery but I think that adds to its charm. I got the Torpedo on gluten-free bread. I realize it's not much of a "torpedo" then but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I also had to try one of their flourless oatmeal cookies and wish I would've gotten a few to go. Yep, the one who was born two months premature and the one I had to feed every four hours (my wife and I were splitting feeding duties because, due to low birth weight, she needed to eat every two hours); the one I literally carried on my back for every walk I took during the first two years of her life, on the theory that it was good to take her out, and she did, indeed, seem to like it, and there really is nothing like having another human being on your back. The one who once asked me, on Martin Luther King's Birthday, "Dad...are we BLACK...or are we WHITE?" Yes, that one. Sharon's been taking her around on local college tours, but this is the first one we went to on a weekend, so I got to go this time, and I have to say...*gulp* Isn't she still a little girl? No. Yes. She is still a little girl. Just my little girl who's almost as tall as her mom and smarter than both of us and in just over a year will be leaving the nest to fly to points unknown. We walked along the beach down in La Jolla afterwards, and she dug holes in the sand with her feet, and said, "Look! I'm in quicksand!" "Look! There are little clams in this hole!" She'll be on her own soon. How do you deal with that reality? Well, a turkey and avocado sandwich on sourdough, and/or a pastrami on rye, with some hand-squeezed lemonade and/or an ice tea, with a chocolate chip cookie that's more chocolate chip than cookie helps a whole lot. "Say Cheese" Actually say what kind of cheese because this place has them all. Cheddar, Swiss, Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, Provolone, Havarti, and Muenster just to name a few. Cheese is not the only thing that this shop offers though, they also have a wide variety of meats, breads, chips, candies, sodas, and cookies. The Cheese Shop has to be the coolest sandwich shop I have ever been too. The first thing you notice when you walk into this tiny shop is all the different candies from all over the world. Next to all the candy is the beverage section. The beverage case is stocked full of unique and exotic sodas and juices. Across from that is the wall of chips. I'm not talking Lays or Doritos either. The Cheese shop sells hard to find brands that you usually can not find at your neighborhood store. Last but not least we come to the deli counter where all the cheese's and meats are displayed. My GF and I decided to share a salami and jarlsberg cheese sandwich on pumpernickel bread and a bag of jalapeño cheddar chips. To drink she got a Faygo root beer and I got a Faygo cream soda. For dessert we bought a smore's candy bar and a couple of the Cheese Shops famous flourless oatmeal cookies. Their sandwiches are definitely not the small ones that your mom used to pack for you when you were in school. These sandwiches are packed full of tasty meats and delicious cheeses. Even though we split this sandwich the half I ate was more then enough to satisfy my hunger. The chips and drinks were great as well. As far as the cookies go I believe that they substitute the flour with crack because these cookies are so addicting. After my first one I went back and bought four more for the road. I've been here about a handful of times, and I've always ordered something different. I can honestly say that I like this place, and they make serious sandwiches. More recently I had the New York Special, which was a hot sandwich of corned beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing on choice of bread (in this case, pumpernickel). So freaking satisfying. Every bite of cured beef and melty cheese and pillow-soft-yet-hearty bread while sitting under the 90-degree sun at the park across La Jolla Shores hotel was a quality bite. Nom. Also, their flourless oatmeal cookies were ridiculously ridiculous. It was oatmeal bound by brown sugar and butter and hugs and heart and family. It was delicious. Ridiculicious. If you're not into meat, then hopefully cheese is what you're looking for. If you want a cheese sandwich, try their Dofino. It's creamalicious. Oh, and one of these days, I'm going to buy a jar of MARmite. Just because of the name. And because I also heard that, in small servings, it tastes kind of like beer. read more

Big sandwiches, highish prices, cool shop. Hubby took me here for lunch on a Sunday. The place is stacked with a mish-mash of all kinds of retro candies ("Hey, Nik-L-Nips!"), and global odd foods. If you need Marmite, HP Sauce, Muesli bars, or a giant can of tuna, they have it. They also have coolers full of all kinds of bottled soda, waters, and teas, but oddly no energy drinks. The star here is sandwiches. There's a menu board outside the door and one over the deli case. The sandwiches are big, and range in price from $6.25 for an egg salad sandwich, to $10.95 for a Longboard Torpedo. I went for the roast leg of lamb sandwich on pumpernickel. It was filled with lots (lots!) of shaved lamb with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, red onions, and feta. Kind of like a Greek dinner on bread. Hubby had the New York Special with pastrami and corned beef, melted cheese and Thousand Island dressing. It was equally huge. You can get deli style pickles on the side. They have racks of chips to accompany your sandwich, but if you're a small eater you definitely won't have room. Both sandwiches were very tasty, the pickles were crunchy, and I do feel I got my money's worth. They have no seating inside the small shop, but a number of small tables outside on the sidewalk. It's usually nice weather, so that's not a problem, or you can take it to go. The counter staff is nice enough, but a little spacey in that California way. There's nothing to tell you, but you pay when your sandwich is ready. Overall, I think I'll definitely want to come back. read more

Try our peanuts while waiting in line? Don't mind if I do. I usually avoid bar snacks, but since these peanuts are still shelled, they are more sanitary and have a nice roasted flavor. This place seems like the perfect stop for lunch after a day at the beach. In fact, you see many beach-goers walk right in barefooted. Photos from around the world with the Cheese Shop frisbee cover the walls, which is a cool tradition. This place is one part candy store and one part deli. Inside, they have an assortment of random candies from around the world. Their other specialty is the hand-crafted sandwiches. I ordered the roast leg of lamb and tried some of the turkey jack avocado. Despite the good quality of ingredients, I thought the flavors were pretty bland. Marginally better than Subway sandwiches, but definitely not worth paying double the price. The thin bread also makes for a messy meal since the sandwich gets soggy pretty quickly. The shop is also famous for their oatmeal cookies made without flour. The result is a very, very, very chewy and slightly sticky oatmeal cookie. The taste is slightly salty and good, but chewing will become tiresome (it's that chewy). The chocolate chip was ordinary. I love the old school feel of this sandwich shop, but it's not hitting the mark for me in the taste/cost ratio. read more

You know the expression, Jumped the shark... well that surmises exactly what has happened to what used to be hands down the best sandwich shop within a hundred mile radius. Over time one of the sons has taken over and as changes have been made the place continues to decline and is now average at best. For those of us who knew the times when the sandwiches were thicker, the ingredients of the sandwiches much higher quality,and the selection of other items offered were abundant you can't help but feel like some things definitely don't get better with time. Now every time you order the sandwich is different; there's no continuity between visits and sometimes the ingredients are fresh and others you have to "rebuild" the sandwich after throwing out half the meat/veggies. The disorganization of the staff is something John would never have tolerated. In his quiet strong leadership kind sort of way he ran a friendly place where no one felt pushed aside and the amazing quality of your lunch was predictable. I miss the old Cheese Shop but, especially John! It's a completely different experience now and if only the vibe had changed I wouldn't be writing this but, the quality of the food (save for the oatmeal cookies) leaves much to be desired. The location definitely saves them; there's no way they would've lasted so long after John left in a different setting. read more

Despite its simplicity in comparison to other shops, the Cheese Shop makes amazing sandwiches that I just cannot resist. I got the Turkey Breast with Meunster Cheese and Cranberry Sauce. I get this hot and it's ABSOLUTELY delicious. They give you a good amount of cheese that's all melted and it's simply amazing. The bread I got with this sandwich is the Rosemary bread, which has a flavory taste. The bread itself is so soft that the cheese almost melds in with the bread. The combination of the flowery bread, sweet and rich-but-not-too-much cranberry sauce, and the thick pieces of turkey breast are just so good. Absolutely give this a try! As it was my first time, the owner gave me a oatmeal cookie, letting us know that it's one of their best sellers and it's flourless! It has the texture of candy, but it has the taste of a cookie. Not too sweet, not too sticky, and works so well with the tea! (and a great way to end your meal). I also got the Iced Tea. For $1.95, it's absolutely amazing tea. You can really taste the flavor of the tea--it tastes roasted almost and it's fresh because they don't add ice into your tea until you order it. The taste is absolutely refreshing and a PERFECT pair for your meal. If this hasn't convinced you, you also get free refills with this, so load up! I also got to try their homemade lemonade, which was also really good. Depending on your mood, I recommend either one! I came back two days later, craving this place. The service is phenomonal and the food is just amazing. I definitely recommend this place, aside from the parking that may be hard to find. Aside from their bomb ass sandwiches (I got the Turkey Jack Avocado on Sourdough) and amazing deviled eggs, Cheese Shop gives you that vibe that you are in a different world, even though it's scrunched in this small space between two other restaurants on the main La Jolla Shores strip. Just the vibe of this place is down to earth and really friendly. The sandwich size is enormous, difficult to finish in one sitting. I ate about 3/4ths of my sandwich and was trying to fight it out to the end to get that awesome feeling of finishing your food, but I ended up just packing the last quarter to go..all for about 7ish dollars! Next time I go I want to toast my bread. If it tastes as amazing as I imagine, it will definitely become my favorite sandwich joint in San Diego. They serve Boar's Head meats, cheese and condiments which always taste better than what other delis serve. The shop is located in a cute little area and although it is a small, it has a lot to offer. They have gluten-free bread! Hallelujah! The Vegetarian Sandwich, aka Evergreen, was fresh and delicious. I also ordered a couple of deviled eggs, which were great. They offer several other sides as well. One of my children had the grilled cheese sandwich and the other had the chicken salad sandwich. They were both fantastic. The sandwiches are really big, so plan for that. It's a great value for that area. There's a cute outdoor seating spot for those who wish to stay and eat, but it's not really a "dine in" kind of place as far as eating inside the deli. It's too small and there's no indoor seating. So if it's raining, plan on take-out. The store sells a few other Knick-knacks: candy, frisbees, bottled sodas...mostly kid's stuff. But I did see some delicious cheeses in the freezer, as the name suggests. Also, they sell super cute souvenir shirts with their store name plus a small Garibaldi.
