A few days ago my daughter and i walked to the Cheese Shop for a sandwich, it was 3:45pm as we entered we were told they were closed and not taking anymore sandwich orders.. :( REALLY? because your sign says you are open until 4pm? then I went back just now and as i was being rung up by an older lady I told her what happened so she would know, instead of being nice about it, and acknowledging the issue and apologizing she said she will let the owner know, and said goodbye...REALLY??? I have been coming to this store for over 20 years and the customer service has really declined...I don't care if it's 5 minutes to closing time, if a customer walks in and wants to purchase something you help them, otherwise CHANGE YOUR SIGN or get rid of a few people.... read more

You can easily walk right by this place and miss it. They make pretty good sandwiches. Generous helpings....good assortment of old school candy! We took our sandwiches to go and sat on a bench by the beach. Good food, good weather-you can't go wrong. I will be back! read more

I'm very picky about sandwiches, and these are consistently The Best!! My favorite is the pork loin, which I always intend to save half of for later (doesn't usually happen). Oh yeah, these sandwiches are the real deal. Try the pork tenderloin sando - a house specialty, unique and delicious. Call ahead to avoid lines. The service was great - owner kept asking us if we needed anything else, napkins, etc. Worth the stop if you're anywhere nearby. read more

This is about the only place in San Diego you can get a cold lamb sandwich. They're now about $10, but really tasty, on dark bread, and they throw in an awesome dill pickle spear, which seems to make it worthwhile! It's basically a takeout deli, but there are a few tables outside; however you can walk to La Jolla Shores to eat as well. Nice people running it, cool place with tons of offbeat sodas and candies too. Great neighborhood. read more

Ventured into the Cheese Shop today, after a four mile La Jolla walk with friends. The three of us were hungry, and the Cheese Shop did not disappoint. With the Yelp reviews in mind, two of us ordered the turkey, cheese and guacamole sandwich on sourdough. It was very large with tons of turkey and lots of avocado. It was hard to wrap your mouth around it, but well worth the effort. My friend ended up with an avocado goatee and well mayonaised fingers...a little messy, but yummy. My other friend ordered the chicken salad on rosemary bread. She enjoyed it, but felt that the bread was a little stale or dry. The sandwiches were so large that we all took half home. The shop was very busy at lunch time during the week. It lacked some organization in the ordering and paying lines. People were confused about where they should be standing, and space was tight for the number of people ordering, paying and waiting. While waiting, it was fun to look at the "back in the day" candy that was being sold. Our favorites were the big red wax lips, candy cigarettes and bubble gum cigars. We will all be back for another awesome sandwich, though will try to miss the noon time rush. read more

I had the pastrami sandwich with a side of macaroni salad. Both were okay but pretty average.

Tremendous sandwiches. Try the lamb. I also really like the oatmeal cookies and deviled eggs. Kids love it for the vast selection of candies and sodas, as well as the fresh lemonade. Makes for great beach food. read more

The Cheese Shop really came through for me with a great product and great customer service. I had to provide lunch to a work group of 60 during a kayak teambuilding event. The kayak company highly recommended the Cheese Shop and I knew I had made the right decision when some in-the-know co-workers applauded my choice. Sandy really worked with me to provide me with the information I needed and was very flexible and considerate getting the order info together considering I was OOO in the days leading up to the event. I even needed a split delivery and Dave took care of everything. The boxed lunch was great. I highly recommend them. And you're in for a treat when you see the store - its the cutest hole-in-the-wall with all sorts of fun snack options! read more

My girlfriends and I stopped in today 5/31/14 at 2:15 after a day at the beach, our snorkeling instructor recommended it. It is not a cheese shop. It is a small deli with a bunch of candy and soda. It was packed and you have to wait for your name to be called out . Finally my name was called, I walked to the register to pay and there was a girl standing in my way so I said " excuse me " since the person was directly where I needed to be and there isn't a lot of space to set the other things down I was trying to purchase. Well apparently the cashier didn't like that because she treated me like a complete asshole and inappropriate. She rolled her eyes, was short with me and extremely rude. I was planning on tipping them since I work in the food industry as well, but after dealing with her for less than one minute I decided against it. I was also going to remind her that she forgot to charge me for my soda and chips but seeing as she disliked me so much for saying a polite "excuse me," I didn't feel the need to anymore. The sandwich was good. The other workers seemed friendly but I would suggest not having a judgmental cashier with an attitude problem at the front to have to deal one and one with the customers. I would consider going back there if I was in the area but if I saw the same cashier at the register I would surely walk out and go to one of the various other restaurants in the area. read more

This is my first time trying The Cheese Shop. It was recommend by our kayaking tour guide. Hands down, this is the best sandwich I have ever had in my life! I rarely do Yelp reviews, but I felt that it was absolutely necessary to let the world know, if you're ever in La Jolla, you have to come and try their sandwiches. The owner came out to the patio to ask if we were enjoying our food, told us a little history of the shop, and after we told him how much we were enjoying them, he brought us one of their famous oatmeal cookies which are also a must try and soooo awesome! I was pretty impressed with this place! It looks like a candy shop with a deli in it. They do have some tables outside but not many, so I wouldn't count on having a place to sit and eat when you go here. But the food was really great. The ingredients were fresh, and the bread was great. The turkey tasted like actual turkey! Like- day after Thanksgiving turkey, not just deli meat. They have a ton of bottled beverages, from bottled coke and Mexican pepsi to old fashion sarsaparilla and a huge candy selection as well. The guy behind the counter was super on it- very professional, kind and accommodating. He gave me a taste of soup when I asked what soup he had that day, and we also got two oatmeal cookies. Both the cookies and soup were good as well! It definitely is pricey for two sandwiches, a bag of chips and two sodas it was close to thirty bucks. But it was great and they were great. such a strange name as cheese shop i would've never have thought it had sandwiches and hard to find candies and sodas...it's like AM PM in there, too much good stuff. it's a small shop that most people would probably miss even if they were walking by. i've been going to this place for years and it's never let me down. maybe it's because i ALWAYS get the pork loin sandwich. it's really well done; slow roasted with a cilantro mayo. they do the pork loin and a couple other sandwiches in house but this one is their specialty and should be tried first before judging anything. it comes with a pickle spear and there are devilled eggs for like 50 cents and these amazing flourless oatmeal cookies for 99 cents. if you like old school candies and imports from england and australia, this is a little gem for you. they have an assortment of goodies from lion chocolate bars to VEGEMITE(if that's your type of thing) and jones sodas. they are surfer friendly for those dawn patrol hrs and there's a couple tables close to the actual building that you can squeeze 4 chairs in right under the ledge for some rain protection read more
