As others have mentioned, there aren't a lot of Chinese Restaurants around this area, and after trying a few this is the best in comparison. The food so far, I always get vegan and vegetables, however my Fiancee and Daughter try out other dishes each time and they both say the same, Yum. The parking is the first time a bit of a guessing game since it is at the back of the building and you feel almost as if you are entering from the back door. The restaurant itself is left with limited decoration and kept fairly clean. The downside is the the level of noise, that due to the high ceilings is a draw back to me. Decided to come here after none of the thai places around scotts valley sounded good. Good service throughout the whole meal. And the food was tasty with big portions. Definitely more than enough for later. No hot tea was brought out, and I didn't see it on the menu. I didn't ask though. read more

Chef Liu - Chinese Near Me - Scotts Valley, California

We've patronized Chef Liu's (and its former incarnation, Mei Garden) since we moved to Scotts Valley in late 2007. Their menu is fairly large, and we've only ever ordered their Combination Plates and Chicken with Broccoli. PLUSSES: 1. They always appear to be open! That came in handy when we were spending late nights getting moved in, but is less necessary now that we've found other 24-hour restaurants in town. 2. Fast, friendly service. 3. Food quality is better than Tim's Chinese. MINUSES: Food value, It seems that you get less for your food dollar now more than ever. The dishes we regularly order seem to have a lot of "filler" (green peppers, onions, etc.) and little meat. BOTTOM LINE: Great hours, good service, probably the best Chinese food in Scotts Valley. But food value could be much better. read more

Thought I'd try something new and went to Chef Liu for a late lunch. I had been there before when it was Mei Garden and later after it became Chef Liu's. The server was friendly and efficient. I ordered the Daily Special Singapore Chow Fun for $10.50. The meal came with a cup of so-so hot and sour soup and a plate of rice noodles, not chow fun. The Singapore-style rice noodles were a bit watery and had three small prawns and tiny amounts of chicken, bbq pork and beef which was disappointing. Next time I'll return to ABC Chinese which is significantly less (20%) expensive and has, in my opinion better food, and definitely more protein. read more

My family and I used to be next door to this restaurant back in the early 90's, back when it was called Mei Garden. We used to order their food every week or two. It's a really nice place to order Chinese food for here or to go. As for the food, your taste buds will be worth every single bite. If you're a fan of spicy food like myself, I strongly recommend Hot Braised Shrimp and Five Flavor Chicken. Spicy and delicious at the same time. Goes great with a side of rice too. My wife and I have been eating here lately 2 to 3 times a week, but no more! I stopped by to get takeout as I had to work late. I ordered a large Wor Wonton Soup and pork buns as these were some of our favorites. I got home and we ate everything! The worse part was the last bite of my wife's soup... there was a fingernail laying in the bottom!!!!! Both of us are totally disgusted now and will never eat there again! We took the nail back to the place and they acted like it couldn't be their staff that did it! I ask any of you to explain to me where it came from if it wasn't theirs? It wasn't mine... too small. Chef Liu's will always be Mei Garden in my mind. I've been coming here my whole life. I've had numerous birthday dinners here. I grew up here. My family has gotten to know the owner and she always looks happy to see us. The food has always been extremely good every time without fail. I've had beef chow fun many places and I always come here for my favorite plate of it. Not that it's original but a perfect version of it. read more

We make the quick drive from SC over to Chef Liu's at least once a week. Love the hot and sour soup that comes with lunch - really nice and spicy. Don't miss the garlic shrimp - fantastic. When it's not crowded, it's also lightning quick. I also walked into this place once at like 10am just to grab a menu and the lady was at a table hand-rolling all of their spring rolls for the day. Great to see a Chinese place scratch cooking everything. I love the people here too - the waitress is this super-friendly Chinese lady who takes your order, then goes into the kitchen and yells it at the top of her voice to the cook in the back. This is our favorite Chinese restaurant in Scotts Valley. My favorite are tangerine beef, house chicken, combination. Chow mien, garlic pork with string beans.. and my kids favorite: lemon chicken and hot and sour soup. This is our go to menu. When we order to go , they usually have the order ready in 10-15mins!! Let em start by saying I'm not a fan of chinese. And follow that by saying if you're going to have fancy chinese you should go to O'mei on Santa Cruz's westside. Those caveats out of the way I work a few doors down from this place and I really really like their soups. Writing this because in 10 minutes I'm about to walk over and once again get a great soup for my sore throat (shout out to my 5yo!). My wife - who *is* a fan of chinese says this is the best in SV, hands-down. The people are very friendly, service is prompt and nice and they're pretty good about picky eaters requesting to hold this / leave out that on their dishes. So yeah, I'm a fan. Of their service and soups. The rest you can get from other ratings here I guess. read more

I would have given this place a slightly better rating were it not for what we found in our food the last time we ordered from here: a bug in the fried rice. We had ordered a lot of food and finding that in the first take-out container we opened made us throw everything away. However, I should have known something like this would happen, as whether you order $20 or $120 of food for take out, it is ready in ten minutes. This implies to me that nothing is being made fresh and has probably been sitting there all day. Everything tastes okay but it also tastes like it has been sitting under a heat lamp. If I could trust that it was prepared fresh then I would give it a better rating...I would be willing to wait longer for fresh food. Do not eat here if you want fresh, authentic, SAFE TO EAT Chinese food. read more

Third time's a charm! This is the third Chinese joint I've tried in Scotts Valley and its the one I'm sticking to. I base my decision on 2 items, Hot & Sour soup and the Kung Pao Chicken. Both items have loads of flavor and the Kung Pao is not all the same bland peanut color like the other places I've tried. I can actually see AND taste the zucchini and green pepper. They got our order wrong. We had asked for vegetable fried rice but got seafood fried rice instead. Three of my family members are allergic to shrimp, and our order was take out, so we were stuck with it when we got home. This is the best Chinese food in Santa Cruz county. Everyone is friendly, Great atmosphere and the food is always fresh. Been coming up here for years. The lunch specials are many and are delicious as well. Even though I live in Concord and commute to Santa Cruz I always seek them out. My boyfriend and I decided to try this Chinese place instead of our usual place. We tried their basics, chicken fried rice, generals chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and beef and broccoli. I must say I was a bit surprised when we called in our order and they said it would be ready in ten minutes... But we still went to pick it up and it was pretty standard pricing for any Chinese place and the staff was very nice. When we got home (5 minutes later) our food was lukewarm and looked like it had been sitting for awhile now (did not look appetizing to say the least). After trying a few bites of each we ended up throwing it all away. Honestly the worst Chinese food I have ever tried. It was soggy and the flavors were awful to say the least. I don't usually write yelp reviews, however, I was inspired after I ordered dinner from Chef Liu last night. Everything I ordered was ABSOLUTELY delicious, but what really caught my attention were the egg rolls. These were without a doubt the best egg rolls I've ever had in my entire life. Nearly 24 hours later and I can't stop thinking about them. They were buttery, crispy, and everything an egg roll should be. Well done Chef Liu! read more
