We were seated promptly, minutes passed and no server came by, we chatted for another 10 minutes, still no server. Had dinner there last night. It was around 7:45pm. We were seated to the right when entering the place. Not too many people back there. Our drinks were taken care of real quick by the man bussing the tables. Then our waiter came. Of all the years and all the places I have eaten, he was by far the worst waiter I have ever had. He took our order and that's about it. Didn't show his face again. I could hear him talking to somebody about his personal life but I guess he was too busy with that than to come over and check up on us. The food was standard diner fare. Good but not spectacular. Man, I was expecting much more of this restaurant based on the other reviews. I live in South El Monte and the breakfast selection pickings are sparse at best. This and the tea house at the huntington were the only close things for breakfast besides Dennys / Ihop / McDonalds. Day started out with my dad and girlfriend wanting breakfast and something different. So we decided to stray from our usual destination of Flappy Jacks in Glendale and give up the delicious waffles and go to something closer (Chef's). Chef's is a definite must-go go for breakfast or lunch! Their menu is extensive, so you have a lot of different dishes to choose from. Not to mention the prices are very good for the HUGE portions they give you. My favorite is the Sunrise, where you get a two stack of pancakes, bacon, sausage, hash browns, eggs, slices of orange, and a drink. You will for sure have leftovers for later, which is a big plus since you can eat there good food for later. The only thing that could be improved is the service. The waiters/waitresses are on the older end and can be negligent (not refilling drinks as often, could be rude, etc.). Other than that, the food is amazing. read more

Been going here for a LONG time - very cool place. Still look the same as it did when I was a kid. Pretty good food, great prices but we really go there for the groovy atmosphere. Where else can you go and still see patrons wearing green polyester pantsuits and gold medallions? You'll want to sit at the back of the restaurant rather than near the front window because the angry chinese waitress works the front. The guy server (i forget his name) is very nice. They give a good presentation of the corn beef hash - now this is the way corned beef should look on a plate - right out of the 70s! Coffee is served up in an old school mug, in fact I think it is the mug that makes their coffee so appealing. If they updated the coffee mugs, I probably wouldnt drink the coffee. The first time I came here was a cool trip with my pregnant wife. The second was with my almost 2 years old toddler Bryson. This place has really reasonable prices, homemade soup, lots of food, and loads of atmosphere. I mean the people who come here are the old white folks who stayed put in Arcadia when the Chinese started buying up all the homes. You feel like you're in a '50's diner with fifties folk who are now in their eighties. And the waitresses are like Chinese Flos. Way cool. The food? It's good. I'm surprised everything we've had tasted like it was made mostly from scratch: soup, lemonade, crispy fried shrimp, crunchy french fries, even decent halibut for a diner. I brought my family here for dinner tonight and it was wonderful. We have never had a bad meal here. My family has been coming to Chefs for over 30 yrs. We arrived at the restaurant around 6:00 p.m and didn't have to wait for a table. The waitress was really friendly and attentive to our needs. I don't know her name, but she is an Asian lady. Now for the food. My mom and sister both ordered the cod dinner and they loved it. It didn't taste too fishy, the tartar sauce was also good. The dinners all come with vegetables, potatoes and a dinner roll. On there menu there's a wide variety of food to choose from. They are open for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Thursdays They have Tortilla chicken soup. It is to die for. Way better than Cocos. It is filled with vegetables, cubed chicken, freshly grated cheese and they top it with tortilla strips. My question is where can you find the tortilla strips? Do they make there own? because they are the best. My husband ordered there corned beef hash. He said it was really good. Not greasy. His breakfast dish also came with eggs, hash browns and toast or biscuits and gravy. He also liked their biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were a little heavy but still good. The gravy was good not peppery like a lot of restaurants.The gravy has a good flavor and texture. It was't lumpy. He also said that it is also filling. Next time he is going to order toast. They also have good coffee. My nephew ordered the chili size. He said that he would order it again. He told me that the chili was not spicy. It looked so good that next time I think I"ll order it. Now for the desserts. My mom and sister ordered the custard pie. They loved it. My husband and I split their coconut cream. It was better than Cocos. Nice and creamy. I love this place. I always come here for breakfast. Never been for lunch or dinner. I feel as though they have a pretty normal menu. Most of the food is average. The extra star is for the the people that work there. They are so attentive and nice. They get pretty busy, but they've got a pretty good system in place. It def has a real dinner feel. read more

The atmosphere is very home & country like, which is actually nearly everything I'd want out of a good breakfast spot. That and good bacon. Which they also do very well here. Food was traditional, home-cooked kind. Very good. Biscuits were a little dry, but honestly that's perfect for biscuits and gravy anyways. Service was wonderful and prompt.
