Ive been here a few times...usually not to bad but tonight, 27$ for sweet and sour chicken combo and boneless ribs...they both tasted like they had been cooked in burnt oil or somethint BURNT...the aftertaste is terrible...I know they have done better so I rate them a 2.5/5 but tonight they were a 1 and I dont plan on going back ...1 for taste, 1 for price - they dont even ask free soda or egg roll- they just give u the egg roll that taste bad. The rice has nothing in it. Maybe 4 pieces of pork..no veggies..no onion...no egg- just boring yellow rice. Very disappointed. Goodbye Chen. Goodbye little boy always stuck to sit there bored. So I've been ordering food here for the last 10 years I made an order for delivery then changed the order to pickup because i new i wouldn't make It back in time. They winded up delivering the food and no one was there obviously because i told them i want to pickup, so i go there to pickup my food and they told me they through my food out because they did the delivery and no one was there and they waisted there time and there money on product , they refuse to make new food for me and refuse to take my orders. They now block my calls. This place is a joke. You just lost a customer for 10 years and a lousy 15$ food order over your front desk people not understanding English well enough and you want to act like it's my fault. The amount of money my family has spent here is infuriating. We have been loyal customers since moving here 3 years ago. Literally never even bothered to try another place and ordered from Chen's almost once every week. The way I was treated by staff today as a result of their poor business mistakes (everyone makes mistakes, but the way you handle them is what is important) tells me all I need to know about how I will spend my money going forward. When you are over 30 minutes late with a scheduled order AND not answering your phones so the delivery company cancels your order, the restaurant gets mad when their driver delivers to us anyway? I'm not sure what you'd do with returned food and that's something I'm questioning about this place now too, but to know that that's what you'd prefer to do with cold, soggy food, rather than making it right tells me everything I need to know to determine where business will go to going forward. I've always done delivery from here and only picked up in person about 2 times in the past. Those two times were unpleasant experiences from staff working there. Like, when you walk in, say hi? Look up? Respond to the person saying hello as they walk in? IDK, maybe that's just me lol. I let that slide because I tend to give the benefit of the doubt. Not much to add about this place but this little unassuming Chinese food spot is pretty good. My family has been ordering from this place for years and they've never been disappointed. Discovered a gem of a take-out Chinese restaurant. If you get past the outward appearances, you'll appreciate this place. This was my first time here. I was hungry looking for something to fill me up before soccer practice and I found Chen's Garden in a shopping plaza nearby the Owl Hollow fields. I got the lunch special - Roast Pork Broccoli. Comes with Pork Fried Rice and a choice of soup or a can of soda. I opted for the Wonton soup. It was amazing and just hit the spot. The Pork Broccoli was on point too; I put two duck sauce packs over the pork and broccoli and one soy sauce pack over rice and it made the meal complete. The mustard sauce for the soup. I can't believe I just discovered this. And they are good people, trust me, I can tell. My sister suggested this place for takeout. When we arrived, my sister went in to pick the food up. We noticed that that the people that were preparing the food were wearing gloves and masks however, the woman in the front that was packing the food up, was not. Wearing gloves. The food can be quite good at times particularly for lunch, but can taper off in quality closer to closing time although this is to be expected with any restaurant. The lunch specials and combos are reasonably priced, with lunch coming with choice of soup or soda of which I opt for the hot and sour soup coming with generous portions of tofu, chicken and veg. Service is very quick with orders usually finished within ten minutes. The General Tso Shrimp is some of the best I've ever had. As someone who only eats fish, I tend to look for this dish everywhere I go and very few Chinese restaurants on Staten Island make it, or make it as good as Chen's Garden. I just wished they would've put scallions on it because the recipe usually calls for it. However, it was fresh and the portions are huge for the price. I then ordered their fried jumbo shrimp appetizer. I was so satisfied with the quality of the shrimp, the breading and the volume of portion, for just under $7. Last but not least, their Spicy Chili Shrimp is to die for. For $13 you get a ton of medium sized shrimp, in a carmelized pepper, onion, and carrot medley smothered in one of the most delicious spicy and sweet chili pepper sauces I've ever had. read more

Our store used to be right next to this restaurant, so we'd order here every Saturday when my brother and I had to come to help out at the store. We've ordered probably every item on the menu at least once. The food here is pretty darn good. Their fried chicken wings are the best I've ever had. The people are super friendly and they're like family to us. The location is pretty tiny/cramped with limited seating, but pretty much everyone takes their food to go or gets it delivered. The phone is always ringing means they must be doing something right. Only negative is that chef gardens location the strip mall location is under renovation and the business sign isn't up other then a paper one in the window. A+ otherwise. So I have been ordering from this place for a while and I was shocked when this happened to me recently. I ordered the lunch special which already comes with a soup and I ordered an extra soup and egg roll on the side, which didn't come in the order, it was on the receipt too. I called them up and they said "oh yea we forgot egg roll, we send it to next time" but when I asked them about the soup they said they gave me the soup and lied that the lunch special doesn't come with soup has been that way. So I used to deliver Chinese back in my late teens & early 20s. When I quit, I used to only go back there to order from because I knew they're clean. I tried Chen's & got hooked right away. Good food, good prices & delivery is pretty quick. I keep going back and forth between here & where I used to work. The only gripe I have is the dude who works the registers & takes orders. He's pretty arrogant & doesn't pay attention to half the things you ask or request. Four times in a row he's screwed up something on my order. Mind you, they were all walk-in orders, not over the phone, so some things might get misunderstood. The first two times I asked for brown rice instead of white...got home, opened up white rice. But whatever, no big deal, right..? Next order I asked to add a can of soda. I put the order in my car & double check because I didn't see him go to the fridge.. Soda wasn't there. I walk back in & say sorry you forgot the soda, so he opens the fridge, grabs it & puts it on the counter & walks away. Sorry to inconvenience you for forgetting part of my order. The last time I went, last week, I only ordered 2 things and asked for a spring roll instead of an eggroll with my combo. Once again, I get home, and it's not what I asked for. That guy needs to work on his customer service skills, learn how to talk to paying customers, & stop being a prick. If not for him, they'd get a higher rating. read more

I never really thought to go into this place since it's on the other side of the island from me, but now that I've tasted their food, I have to say I'll be going over there a lot more! I didn't really order anything complex, just the pork fried rice and an order of wonton soup. What I had, however, was excellent. Everything was very well cooked, and they didn't skimp out on the meat in the wontons like most other Chinese restaurants. The rice was not dry at all and it was extremely flavorful. The service in the place was prompt, and the people behind the counter were very friendly. The place seemed much cleaner than most Chinese restaurants on the island. This could be the best Chinese food on SI. And I judge that on every account aside from the fact that it's a take-out place with 3 tables. Chen's is the Arden Heights shopping center in a location that's been home to a Chinese Food spot for decades. Even still, the fact that it's hidden means that it gets terrible exposure. You might not know about this place even if you live in the area. To get right to it, they are always friendly and there is always self serve tea which is really nice. They also make the best wonton soup around. I actually think that it's the best i've ever had. Nobody really comes close. The house special fried rice and lo-mein are also very delicious. Never oily, and the fried rice is brown and flavorful like it should be. They also use good white meat chicken and nice, fat shrimps. I also recently ordered the mei-fun for my picky gf. She loved it. They cooked the rice noodles perfectly. Lastly, the prices are great when compared to other places in the area. If you're not sure where to find this hidden gem, it's a few stores down from the old Clubhouse bar (now called Ten-Four). 5*s based on food quality alone. For the last 6 years I would have given 4 stars but as of this past month I only give one star. Did they change owners ? So disappointed. This was the only place aside from Empire Sezuahan I'd ever have ordered from but my last order was terrible. Worse than that was how the owner treated me I had a delivery of 2 large wonton soups. Their soup was the best. But my last order was bad. The wontons were sour tasting. Like they may have been improperly refrigerated or sitting out in the heat. They were inedible. The bags of fried noodles were stale. I was just getting over a bad flu and was dying for their soup. I called the restaurant to tell them the soup was bad and they said I could come there to return it. I said I ordered take out and paid a $5 gratuity to the driver for the convenience of not having to leave my house. They asked what I wanted and I said I would br happy with only a credit for the soup for my next order I didn't expect them to redeliver new soup. Just for a credit on next order. The person on the phone said I could not get a credit. He said the owner said I could only come into the store to return it that night. I asked him to ask the owner if he really wanted to lose a long time customer over $9.50. He came back on the phone and said the owner said it's ok if he loses a customer. Lmao. I guess he must do very well there to act so pompous but I feel that alone will stop me from ever ordering again from them. How can they justify not offering a credit for rancid food ?
