Small husband/wife run neighborhood diner, very easy two block walk from our hotel. We were a party of five and had various omelette's and other breakfast items. All of the food was fresh and tasty. I've lived right around the corner from this place for over four years and hadn't tried it. My boyfriend finally reminded me to go last weekend and we had a lovely little Saturday breakfast. The ambiance is a addicted fiber with booths and a long diner counter in the center. Pretty quaint - you can tell its been there awhile. The service was quick and courteous. As a frequent customer coming here every 2-3 days ordering Cheeseburger and fries for $6.50, this place is "not so good" place and a "When I'm hungry and need food while I'm in the area" place. First of all, the Cheeseburger is "ok" but it doesn't meet my expectations for a $3.75 burger. It has lettuce, cheese, some ketchup and the meat. The meat is super thick but the burger itself is average size and average taste. As of for the fries, stay away from the fries! Everytime I come here, the fries are dry, hard and flavorless. Today, my fries were very dry and hard. Tasted very bland. I asked them for ketchup packets but they didn't have any. They do have salt but you have to add it before you leave because they don't have salt packets. Overall, this place is "ok" but the value of the meal itself makes me want to not come here when I could be going to a different place to get lunch with more value in the meal and less inexpensive. read more

This is absolutely the cutest spot in San Francisco, it's not modernized at all. It's a mom and pop shop, and I appreciate those more than I do than ihop or Denny's, or getting the same thing at some new place along the pier, only for it to be priced at $30 with rude customer service. Pretty much your average diner fare. Seems like a lot of locals gave it some unjustified high ratings, in some cases because it's their "neighborhood diner." As an ex-SF resident, I didn't think it was bad, but with so many choices in the city I'm not sure why this place would get the nod. Proximity was important to me too, it was close to the hotel and we had a lot to do, so this choice was due to convenience reasons more than anything. My son ordered a chef's salad, I didn't taste it but it looked, again, pretty darn average. Iceberg lettuce, American cheese slices, and a generally refrigerated look. I think mine was called the Chestnut Diner Special omelet?!? It was pretty good. Shrimp, crabmeat, cheese, and some veggies within. It was cooked fine, but as we all know, it's kinda hard to screw up eggs once you have a hot pan. With the egg recalls going on (didn't hear about this until later that day) I consider myself lucky. Shrimp and crabmeat was out of a can, again, not saying it was bad, in fact, I was happy that they at least used a small amount of real crab meat in lieu of that fake crab stuff. My main complaint with my meal was the fact that they skimped on the home fries. Potatoes are cheap, and if you're serving (possibly) frozen potatoes, they're even cheaper. Overall prices weren't too bad for the area. SF in general can be pretty expensive, especially the Marina district. Service was efficient and polite. It was just our party and one other gentleman, and the Asian woman serving us (owner?) was on the ball. Unfortunately the roof was being re-tarred, so our meal was accompanied by the smell of hot asphalt, which isn't exactly a palate tempting stench. I'm not going to blame the restaurant for this, but keeping the door closed may have helped a little. I wouldn't recommend the Chestnut Diner in general, but it wasn't a bad place. If you're in a hurry, and nearby, it'll do. I also wasn't hung over, unlike many of the other reviewers so far. Coffee and simple breakfast food can seem a lot better once it saves you from wasting your day--maybe if I was hung over I would have appreciated this place more. Otherwise, fairly unremarkable. So-- 5 stars but 5 stars for a diner. This is a true diner folks. Expect breakfast and burgers plus the old fashioned milkshake! I love this place, family run, great attentive servers, clean, and in hang over distance to me. This is the go to for me no matter how I feel. Now granted this is not the brunch hang out, but the scrumptious american breakfast on any day till 3 is what it has to offer. If you live in the hood, stop by this place for a cup of java and something good to eat. I came here for a post wedding rehearsal hangover breakfast, after reading reviews by the fine people of Yelp. This is definitely a no frills place and I was thrilled that there was no wait. I don't know if brunch is a different kind of animal in SF than it is in NYC, but I expect to have to wait a bit for a table. So, yay. I ordered the California omelet and a coffee, and the coffee was served in a giant mug of hot deliciousness. My omelet was good but I expected more sour cream on the side...I guess in California they maybe don't overdo it on the fatty stuff? Who knows. And it was all pretty affordable. I approve. The ingredients may be from Costco, but they do a darn fine job making it taste great and still better than what I can make! And they are super fast and friendly. I love getting their breakfast sandwiches to go. I call ahead and pick it up on my way to the 30x bus stop in the mornings. It's a grueling bis ride, but I'm always happy knowing I have my breakfast sandwich to look forward to once I get to my desk. On a side note, there are three sisters who own Chestnut Diner, Amro Market, and First Cup coffee shop, all of which are next door to each other! Cafeteria food. Not that that's a bad thing. Perhaps my biggest gripe here is the bleak decor and the limited seating options - if you came with more than 4 prepare to be diced up at the bar or wedge into tiny booths. Smaller parties will find this a plush as they're ensured cush seating. The menu is limited to breakfast or burgers before 3pm, not sure about dinner. I had The Elvis which came a little overcooked with a side of what tasted like OReida's baked oven fries - a favorite of mine. When a friend suggested we eat here again I'd forgotten I'd even come here in the first place. It's more of a hangover meal than a lunch, I think. Our waitress was a hoot, though.
