I truly don't know why the overall rating here isn't that great - don't let that deter you from having a special night at Chicago Chop House! I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday and our 100-day versary (a special Korean day), and we were both so impressed by the stellar service and food. We also got a little story about a BTS celebrity having sat in my exact seat, which was awesome! She was very accommodating with our wine pick too - our bottle of cab was excellent. Such amazing service - everything felt so personal for this special day. We ordered the ceasar salad, truffle mac and cheese, brussel sprouts, and Tomahawk Ribeye to share. The steak was melt in your mouth delicious, tender, and flavorful - didn't even need the hollandaise sauce we added as an enhancement on the side. The truffle mac and cheese was so rich, creamy and tasty as well. The brussel sprouts were excellent, with delicious thick generous pieces of quality bacon. The ceasar salad was a nice crisp and lighter addition as well. And for the finale - they sent over TWO cakes for our special day. These chocolate lava molten cakes were rich, warm and sweet. The Chilean Seabass was very good and the sauce was light and a tiny bit sweet which tasted great. The burger was amazing because it was done just right the way I asked, And the toppings (grilled onions, provolone cheese, lettuce and tomato) We're really good. The fries that came with it were tasty with a little bit of Parmesan cheese on top. They were advertised as truffle fries, but I didn't taste a truffle part. But they were still good. Our waiter Joshua was really nice, and had the right combination of being attentive, but not intrusive which is a sign of a great server. Overall, it was a great experience, and the lighting was dark enough, but not too dark. And the surrounding walls have many pictures of all kinds of Chicago, history, such as meat, packers, defenders, those who went to jail, and builders. This triggered staff with cell phone flashlights checking out the meat on the plates to verify the problem! The default seating wasn't sexy at all. We were seated at the very first table at the top of the stairs. Be sure to be very specific about your seating preference when coordinating your reservation. There seemed to be a house party going on right under us. The music really didn't blend well with the ambiance. Natural light lovers: Tables 40, 50 & 10 are window seats and must be requested via phone reservation. The dining room is perfect on the 2nd floor. The service from Julian was absolutely exquisite so ask for Julian. Freddie is also a fantastic experience! The lobster bisque was missing the lobster. The crab cake was missing the crab. I probably spent $10,000 at steakhouses in Chicago before discovering that Chicago Chop House existed. Food was excellent and the menu was surprisingly varied. This place can go up against the best in the city. The difference, or at least our perception of what's different, is that the clientele here was very touristy or just lacking class. There's a mandatory gratuity for every party which is just hilarious and completely without precedent (I support it!). The lady sitting behind us knew the waitstaff by name and thought she was calling shots but then appeared to have no knowledge of how to answer the question "how would you like your steak prepared?" We booked this restaurant because it was walking distance to the Peninsula. There was live music - The gentleman playing had talent. He was amazing and the music was very enjoyable throughout dinner. The service was good, but some of the food was not that great. Dozen oysters (east coast/west coast) - The west coast oysters were so much better than the east coast ones were just a bit off. We typically love both! Shrimp Cocktail - Not bad. Chop House Wagyu Burger - Not that great. I was hoping to be blown away but I wasn't. I was wondering why my daughter didn't want to finish the quarter of the burger. The fries were good. Broiled Chilean Sea Bass - Delicious. Lots of flavor. The best dish here. Wagyu 5 oz - Taste like blood and not in a good way. We just felt it wasn't cooked properly. That's coming from someone who loves to eat their steaks Blue (medium rare more on the rare for me). What I'm used to is Alexander Steak House in Cupertino, CA where they make their wagyu steak to die for. I mean for the price, you would think this is the best. Dined at Chicago Chop House while on a work trip and my oh my, it was an experience indeed. Our group of four decided on this steakhouse after hearing it is a local legend of a restaurant so we figured- when in Rome! We had a reservation for 7pm and were promptly seated at that time in their upper level dining room. The ambiance is dimly lit, classic and swanky- definitely a restaurant for a special occasion. Our server explained the steak portion of the menu to us thoroughly (difference between dry aged and wet aged), gave us recommendations for our sides (starches and vegetables), and mentioned they are an in house chop house. Anyways, we each ordered wine by the glass from their wine menu which had a decent selection. The table ordered 3 dry aged grand filets ($81/filet) and 1 maple glazed salmon ($48). In addition, we ordered the broccolini, cheesy mashed potatoes, and brussel sprouts. The filets, salmon and sides were all particularly delicious; the sides paired well with the meat and fish. Our table was extremely content with the quality and taste of the food. The service was fantastic. The prices are on the higher end but somewhat reasonable considering the quality of the food, ambiance of the restaurant, and overall dining experience. I could not get out of here fast enough! The food was pretty good. However if I'm going to be spending over $400 on dinner for 2 then I expect great service! I made the reservation and as always I stated in the notes of my reservation that I'm deaf and wear hearing aids and need to be seated at a corner table so my back is to the wall with no one on the side of me. This is because my hearing aids pick up background noise and sitting in the corner helps cut down on the background noise. They stuck me at a table right by the entrance to the kitchen. I requested a different table so my daughter didn't have to deal with people coming in and out. We had to wait 15 more minutes for a different table, but it was totally ok as I don't mind waiting. We ordered the lobster bisque and oysters Rockefeller for our appetizers. The bowl for the lobster bisque was so hot that my 12 year old daughter burned her hand, it ended up blistering. After 25 minutes it still has not cooled off a bit. My daughter was upset about her hand so we just went ahead and sent the lobster bisque back. The oysters Rockefeller had way too much cheese on it and it was burnt cheese, not exactly edible. I love oysters though, so I just pealed the cheese off and ate the oysters and spinach. Then it came time for our main entrees. My daughter ordered the tomahawk steak and I ordered the new your strip. I asked the server about sauces for my daughter's tomahawk steak as an enhancement. She recommended the bone marrow and the Chop House butter, so we said ok to that. They bring out the bone marrow, it was not a sauce, it was bones with the marrow placed back in it. At this point I was really mad, embarrassed, and wanted to leave. My daughter ended up sending the bone marrow back and asked for a different sauce. The steaks were great. My daughter loved her Tomahawk, I loved the New York Strip. I would give them a 5 out of 5 on the steaks, they were perfect. During this time the manager had come by to check on our order. I apologized for the mess up on the bone marrow. I had thought that the server said it was a sauce, but it wasn't. I asked about the carrot cake, I hadn't actually ordered it though, was just asking about it. He said it was good and baked in house. Then the manager took off. The server comes back. I asked for more drinks. I'm really still wanting to leave asap since my daughter's hand was still hurting and she was having trouble with gripping her knife to cut her steak. I asked if they could please cut her steak for her, and they did. About 15/20 min later we were ready to go, we requested boxes for the leftovers. She boxed everything up. Then she mentioned that she'll be bringing out dessert in a bit. I was confused, I had not actually ordered dessert from her though, I had only asked the manager about the carrot cake. After all the mess ups and communication failures I just wanted to get out of there and tend to my daughter's hand. The server brings out the carrot cake. I asked if it could be boxed up. My daughter took a bite and was not at all impressed with it. I took a bite and loved it, I thought it was great. It was not too sweet, the caramel on the bottom really brings out the flavor of the cake. I also loved that there was not so much icing. 5 out of 5 on the carrot cake. If I was not so stuffed from the steak and sides I would have finished that cake right there. I went ahead and put my card on the table because we still had not received our check and I just wanted to leave. The server takes the card, brings back the check. She pointed out that they comped the lobster bisque and bone marrow as if they did me a favor. I would hope they comped it since they caused my daughter to burn her hand by not warning her about the hot bowl and bringing out bone marrow which was not actually a sauce. I would actually think that the dessert would be comped after everything we experienced. My only advice is this....when you have a customer/guest in your restaurant and they are up front about their deafness and that they read lips to communicate, do not give them a server that has an accent. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Sunday Brunch is baaaaaaaaaack and it is indoors! To begin the week-long celebration known as The Queen Mother's birthday, I wanted to do brunch and the universe responded by The Queen showing me a video on Facebook. Below that post was an ad for Chop House. All I saw was the word brunch and a quote came to mind: "We accept the brunch we think we deserve." Yes, I did deserve what I got today at the Chop House and it was glorious! First let me start with the COVID protocols: as soon as me, The Doctor and The Queen checked in, the hostess checked our temperature and took us to our table on the second floor. From what I could see, on the first floor as we walked in, tables were spaced out for social distancing....same for the second floor. On our table was a bottle of "Chop House" hand sanitizer. All of the staff was wearing masks at all times and we were required to have our masks on at all times except when actively eating and drinking. We noticed a tent in the outdoor next to the building as we were going inside, but I was not sure if they were seating people out there. Our dining experience was facilitated by Joseph (server) and Omar (his assistant). I thought that was really cool that Joseph referred to Omar as his assistant because 1) most servers do not introduce the busser and 2) Joseph didn't refer to Omar as a busser. During the entire dining experience, Joseph and Omar were on point with the service and customer service. They were very pleasant, have great table side manners and were fun to be around. The hostess was also on top of things and very helpful, I just didn't get her name, but kudos to taking care of us. We started with a dozen of oysters from the East. They are served with a cocktail sauce and a mignonette sauce. If you have never had a mignonette sauce with your oysters, you have got to try it. It is so simple but really brings out the flavor of the oysters. The oysters themselves were lovely, mild creamy flavor and texture. I could have easily had another order, but round two came out....the traditional French toast. I am going to say that this was a great dish. I normally am not a fan of restaurant French toast because it is either overcooked or you do not get enough for the price. But this was made with thick brioche, cinnamon powered sugar and maple syrup. There were six slices, so we each got two pieces. Next came the entrees: The Doctor and I both got Manhattan Benedict and that was delish: USDA prime medallions, Brussel sprout leaves, poached eggs with a very nice hollandaise sauce. It was served with a trio of potatoes with onions and red peppers. The Queen got Rosemary Fried Chicken and Waffles, served with a honey truffle and fondue cheese sauce. Man, that dish was ridiculous and was totally gangsta! When it was presented, it was literally a half of chicken on waffles. And that chicken was on point! Juicy and moist, and the coating was delish. I don't think it needed the cheese sauce myself, the chicken could definitely stand on its own. Takeout boxes were requested as there was no way to finish that. The Doctor and Queen finished off the meal with a serving of sorbet (lemon and mango). It was interesting that they both said it very good but commented on it being very cold. Not sure what Chop House is doing with theirs, but they both get sorbet all the time and that was the first time I have heard them make that comment. I did try the lemon sorbet and it was cold and delish...what I noticed was it didn't start to melt right away. For drinks, I got a bottle of Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut...this was the best deal ever! It was $35, marked down $69 for the month of February. Oh yes, Mama was in brunch heaven! This was a most wonderful start to my birthday celebration.
