It was a beautiful day in Chicago and my fiancé, future father-in-law were hanging at the river walk when all of a sudden we had a taste for oysters. Our go-to spot is Shaw's but they were booked. I was able to get a reservation with Chop House and we walked on over. While walking over, FIL said he'd always wanted to go here so it felt even more special. The service was great! Our server, Johnny, was very attentive. We order some cocktails - my extra dirty martini was exactly what I wanted...and the blue cheese stuffed olives made it even better. We ordered the petite seafood tower and a dozen oysters. Crazy enough, the east and west coast oysters were two of our favorites!! Blue Point and Kumamoto- what are the odds? Wait wait wait...let's take about the house bread though. I'm not even a big bread gal but this bread was amazinggggg! Still steaming when you ripped a piece off! Yum! The seafood tower was good. I used to live in Chicago several years ago and tried numerous steak houses yet never this one. I had a client meeting in town last night and decided to try this out since it was close to my hotel. I have to say I was blown away by the experience. Food was magnificent. I had a filet that was medium rare. It was cooked perfectly. Sides were awesome too. The waiters and waitresses that helped us were fantastic. Very helpful and we were served all night with great food and drinks. They did not miss a beat. The dessert was so so good. The bathroom was the cleanest bathroom I think I have ever seen in a restaurant. It was like it was just cleaned. Not a spot anywhere. I would definitely go back. The price was a bit high but it was well worth it for the excellent food and great staff. A plus for me. read more

A wonderful dining experience! Ate here for our anniversary and it was perfect! They are currently seating outdoors for COVID restrictions in a heated tent and where we sat it was very very warm. We did not have to wear our coats or anything like that. I know some people sitting near the sides of the tent found it a little breezy, so just note that you may want to bring a coat just in case. All of our food was fantastic. We had the ahi tuna steak (cooked to perfection), the dry aged bone in Kansas City (tender and huge), potato and asparagus sides, and cheesecake and lava cake for dessert. DISAPPOINTED ABOUT $5MARTINI BAIT SCAM It was an okay experience. Of course the world has been closed and i get that. However, like many of you, I have been getting so ads about Chophouse's new drink specials. $5 MARTINIS! Well let me say that this ad floating around on FB and IG is a lie. The ad clearly says $5 Vidka Martinis and Chicago ChopHouse drinks - can't be combined with other offers. So when I decided to make a reservation at 5:45 for some drinks and quick appetizers, i was told right away I was mistaken. Apparently, despite it not being included on the constant push ad, you HAVE to order an entree in order to get a martini AND the only $5 drinks were ONLY a Classic Martini and a dirty Martini, despite the ad saying "Vodka Martinis and Chicago ChopHouse Vodkas" I was very disappointed that there were so many stipulations to get a drink, despite non of this being added to the ad (shown below). I was also told that the advertisement I've been pushed daily was an old ad and that a new one was in rotation. BUT here I am 7 hours later and I received the same Ad, which prompted me writing this review because originally I was not going to. What I ordered was a Cosmo, which was $8 because of course, that's not considered a "vodka martini" and order Lobster Mac and Chicken Parm. The food was prettt good. The Mac needed a little extra seasoning, but overall not bad and a pretty big serving. Same with the Chicken Parm So go for decent food. Do. Typically never leave a review, but after this experience it's hard not to. My husband and I are very patient people and we completely understand when a restaurant is busy AND is going through a labor shortage. However, we made a reservation for our anniversary here over two months ago and still had to wait an HOUR for our table to be ready. Our reservation was for 730 and we were not seated till close to 845. We get to our table and we are seated on the first floor, next to the tvs and bar. Not the most "romantic" experience for us stating it was our anniversary. Our waiter came up and kindly asked us to be patient with him as they were very busy, we totally understood. But he could have at least got our drink order first before saying he would be back after getting a table their check... so we wait another 20 minutes at the table with no drinks. He finally comes to take our full order and we wait again... at least another 15 minutes and still no drinks. We see them at the bar, so I went up and just asked if we could get them. Even the bartender knew how long they were sitting, because he added more ice to my husbands drink. Our waiter clearly saw that we had them now and didn't even bother to come by and apologize or acknowledge it. Our food comes... Both of our steaks were rare and our broccolini was cold. I kindly ask him if to take it back and he moved so quickly he didn't even bother to ask my husband about his steak, so we had to find another waiter to take his. My steak comes back and literally has a hair hanging from the first piece I pick up. Needless to say, we just wanted to leave as soon as possible after all this. We live an hour away and out of all the steakhouses in Chicago, we chose to come here for our anniversary and had a terrible experience. What a waste of a night and even bigger waste of a $300 dinner bill for food we didn't enjoy. We will not be back. read more

Full disclosure, the older I get, the more I pass on the beef. Having said that, two things 1) My friend raved about dry aged meat which I have never tried 2) Another friend was dead set on eating some high grade beef to celebrate his birthday. This is how I came to be at the Chop House. The place itself has three levels, we only saw the first floor, which is cozy and has a Chicago gangster theme. The service was great, we wanted for nothing and the Chop House even catered a few custom requests we came up with. Kudos Chop! The food itself was good, a particular stand out were the oysters on the half shell, the flavor profile was lovely. The prices are what you would expect for the type of place it is and where it is located so bring your mullah and then some, you will need it. I am thankful to have had the experience, but know that I will not be returning on my own for steak because 1) Not big on beef 2) I would never ever pay that kind of money for a piece of meat ;) I mean if you like paying upwards of a hundred dollars for a piece of meat and THEN upcharge for anything outside of that, say a vegetable, or a sauce, etc then you will absolutely LOVE this place. THE BEST FRIES I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! So crispy, yet not oily. We originally went in for the $10 Wagyu burger special. Honestly, everything was perfect except the wagyu burger. The outdoor seating was covered and heated, with Xmas decorations all over. The complimentary bread and butter was hard not to like. The bread was warm, crispy on the outside and chewy core. The fries tasted like they were air fried almost, not greasy at all yet so crisp!!! Wagyu burger was bland even for me, who never add salt when I cook. I celebrated my birthday here with my Bestfriend and the food was exceptional. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to order and the waitress was patient in explaining how certain dishes were prepared. We started off with the lobster escargot, crab cakes and baked oysters. The lobster was so fresh and good , the crab cakes were some of the best I've had in the city and the baked oysters were mind blowing as well. I had a rack of lamb, brûlée sweet potatoes and baked macaroni and cheese. The sweet potatoes were probably my favorite the brûlée crust on top was perfect and not over bearing. I also tried the mashed potatoes they were literally perfect. I loved the ambiance as well. I would suggest this restaurant for an intimate dinner not a large party. read more

I have been coming here since I lived in Chicago briefly in 1988-1989. It is a "go to" whenever I'm in Chicago. It is the preeminent steak house in Chicago, as is the Prime Rib in Washington and Gallagher's in New York. Tonight was no different. The service by Olivia was perfect, the food prepared expertly and the ambience much less crowded than way back then. But it was great to be back. This review is more about the "Credit card fee" of $4.50 added to the bill. Apparently, there's a dispute with the city and the credit card companies and Chicago pays a higher fee, upwards of 4% when it's more like 2.5% elsewhere. Management needs to resolve this. It's not the money, it's the principle. I'd rather pay more for the food than see the fee. Many customers, not me, take it out on the server when figuring the gratuity, which isn't fair either. I've seen restaurants bill customers for employee health care, pandemic fee, and "cost of goods increases" and that's BS as well. It's called cost of doing business, as in sick it up. Don't ruin an otherwise stellar reputation or penalize your hard working staff over nickels and dimes. read more

Came in at 4PM Saturday Aug 8 to dine before an 8:30 flight. Covid Rules - all protocols in place. 3 steaks and a prime rib - all 5 star quality, served as requested. Venue and service excellent, attentive but not pesky, just right. Note most of the time during dinner we were the only ones on the second floor. Things to keep in mind. It is expensive - no secret - aged steaks served in a historical building - very cool, perhaps even a value but this is not for everyone's budget. 20% service is added. States clearly on the menu and the server reminded me when the check was brought. A lot of the wine list is expensive. Expensive wine lists and mandatory tips just rub me the wrong way. Having said that, there are some very rare and unusual wines available, up to $10,000. The wine list is on their website, do your research and be as adventurous as budget allows. I came here recently for a VIP yelp elite event, Having not been to the Chop House for a while, I was really looking forward to revisiting. Great drinks, I had the King's Bee's Knee's (Bulleit Bourbon, Honey, and fresh lemon) and the Purple Valentine (Grey Goose, Chambord, Fresh lemon and a touch of sugar), my favorite! We had a great variety of food: lobster rolls, tuna tartare, steak tartare, duke of bacon, Burrata-wrapped prosciutto, chicken sliders, and prime angus prime rib sliders. The first/garden floor is dedicated to Chicago gangsters and Chicago mayors. This is very visible from the outside with the black "mobster style" car that is right outside the restaurant on the east side. The 2nd floor is dedicated to the "Builders of Chicago" and the 3rd is dedicated to Chicago's history including restaurants, buildings, trains, and musicians. I missed the tour of all 3 floors and behind the scenes that was given by the new owner, Matthew and hope to check out the 2nd and 3rd floors on my next visit. They have teamed up with Frank Calabrese Jr. and his ride along tour of Chicago mob sites. We were seated at window so great people watching. Food - Caesar salad was ok, not memorable - should have ordered diff app. Husband ordered prime rib special and this was 5 star! This was a great find even though this place has been here for many decades. The atmosphere is very nice, dark and quiet. Very cozy and romantic. Adam was our server and he was AMAZING! He was humorous, patient, and authentic. The old fashioned I had was well crafted, and the bread was served warm. The meat could have been cut with a the back end of a butter knife. It's just not worth it. We went as a group thinking we are in for a treat going to one of the best steakhouse in Chicago. We were very very disappointed. The lighting is so low, can't even see what's on the menu. Is there something to hide on the food they don't want customers to see? Overall the experience was great. I called in and did a reservation in advance. They hold a 250 dollar deposit that is applied to the bill at the end of the meal. They also add 21 percent gratuity automatically. The vesper drink was way too strong and I was not a huge fan especially for the price. The wet aged ribeye was incredible until you get to the meat near the bone. It was a little undercooked. Overall a great steak. The sides were awesome and I know I was there for the steak, but I was absolutely obsessed with the Mac and cheese, highly recommended it and the potatoe pancakes. In a city seemingly overflowing with steakhouses, Chicago Chop House has a few unique things to offer. First off is the ambiance. Located in a 120-year-old townhouse, it's definitely cozier and more historical than the competition. And if you're into Chicago history, the walls are covered with more than a thousand old photos, stock certificates and other ephemera, many with labels denoting their significance. The third floor, called the "skybox," is the quietest place to sit. It's divided into small spaces that work well for intimate conversation. The ground floor bar is by far the liveliest space. The menu offers the fairly unique option of ordering nearly identical steaks handled differently. There is a section of wet-aged meat (usually my preference), dry-aged, and also American Wagyu. I tried the Wagyu New York Strip, and it was just okay. It was thinner than the other steaks, and wasn't as tender or fatty as I would expect from Wagyu. Perhaps that was the result of it being cooked closer to medium well than the medium rare I ordered. Far better was my wife's dry-aged New York Strip, which was very tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked. We started with a cold seafood assortment for one, which was actually enough for the two of use to have a bit of tuna and crab, and to split the oyster and shrimp according to our preference. Then we also shared a Ceasar salad, which was more than enough for two. Sides are also large. We shared creamed spinach, which was a bit more to the cream side than I prefer, but tasty. There's a nice wine list, with a few older gems that are reasonably priced for Chicago. Service was friendly and attentive, and we enjoyed our very relaxing and intimate meal. read more

Cannot recommend more strongly. Went as a B-Day dinner for my son turning 19. Josh was our waiter, who was impeccable with his combination of friendly banter, knowledge of the menu and understanding his audience (a fresh faced 19 year old and his less than fresh 50+ father). The entire staff working with him were on point, kind and professional. CCH is the perfect old school steakhouse with a flair for new drinks (the boy had some blueberry-lemonade concoction, I had the CCH Old Fashioned). We shared the shrimp cocktail ( 12-1 size) but more importantly the bone marrow was a must have. We got the cowgirl and KC steaks, rare. Both amazing, perfect. The very kind and nice server explained that is was because of COVID. Americans (such as myself) fully supported gracious tips during the height of COVID. Personally, I tip more than 15% as I worked as a waiter. If there is going to be an added charge it should be noted as you enter or on the menu, not when the bill is presented. Our waiter Johnny was amazing and all of the wait/support staff were very kind and went out of their way to make our experience memorable. Had the prime rib special and It was truly special. So tender and flavorful. It was cooked to perfection. The only thing that would have made it better was if the mashed potatoes were garlic mashed potatoes. And the old fashioned hit the spot. It's just like the old fashioned I've I had in New Orleans. I saw there was an old school car from the 30's and 40's that was parked right outside. The snow was on it so I was not able to see what kind of car it was. I tried a few things on the new late night bar menu. One of the things i tried out was the lamb chops appetizers for like between $18-24. You could tell that new and exciting things are abound here because the entertainment was provided by someone who was one of the finalists on American Idol season 9 or 10 and was singing a variety of James Brown, Chaka Kahn, Temptation, Michael Jackson covers. I was told this place is under new management. I am looking forward to eating here more and experiencing good entertainment and food. The managers and GM's of the place really cared that myself and my friend were having a good time. Loved the Old School Photos. One of the managers I forget her name came up to us and said " think of this as your 2nd home". I bet that most people who will see this review have only had people say that to you only a number of times in your dining life.
