How did I not know about this place? The broasted chicken is truly a family favorite since we discovered it recently. My parents, in-laws and the wife are always suggesting Chicken Coop. The broasted chicken is a great fried chicken done under pressure so its not greasy. So its sooo good but you dont feel soo guilty for eating it. The salads are good and sides are just finger licking good. The ambiance inside is just a comfy family place, nothing special, not a place you go to for the ambiance or crowd. I've been here twice, most recently for breakfast on New Year's day. Breakfast was just fine. I ordered coffee, which was very standard diner-ish coffee. I also had bacon, eggs, potatoes and toast. The baked potato is good too. I love that the potato skin is tender not dry. Pet Peeve alert: I'm pretty sure the sour cream isn't real sour cream. Why do some restaurants do that?! My boyfriend usually has the Brisket. Several slices of tender beef with lots of gravy. A cold, crisp green salad & warm, surprisingly delicious rolls come with the entrees. They have a vast lunch & dinner menu but we still need to have breakfast here. The Yelp photos look so good! Service is quite efficient & you don't seem to wait too long for anything. As everyone warns, it's Cash Only. Odd but I guess that completes the throwback thing. If you've been to Zubie's in HB, this is it's sister restaurant. It has a very divey, old HB feel (even though it's in Newport Beach), with a can't-beat-the-price happy hour menu and a killer margarita (meaning, it will probably kill you lol). We got the chicken fried steak to split (they charge a $1.00 splitting fee) which actually turned out to be a better deal than the happy hour. It came with a huge salad, dressing of your choice on the side, and. We decided to sit at the bar where we met the amazing Horacio. I was really surprised to see how diverse their menu was. They have everything from Mexican, Italian, seafood and all American. I had just had brunch so I wasn't hungry but was craving some dessert. I was skeptical to order dessert from here not knowing what options they would have but I was pleasantly surprised. I originally wanted the chocolate chip cookie with ice cream but they didn't have the cookie dough so settled for the chocolate cake with ice cream. The cake was rich but really good. Yes, this is one of those places, the portion sizes are insanely huge. Split between the two of us, I could not finish my half. The food was good, otherwise. I saw a sign they take ATM now, but still no CC. We are anti-Valentiners, but a friend told us about their Special- Lobster tail, New York strip, 1/2 rack of ribs for $30. Sounded like enough food to share, and he gave us a gift cert. for Xmas, so off to the Coop. Loves: The Claw Machine in front. No stuffed animals- live lobster! $2 a shot, you catch it, they cook it. Cool. Instead of bread basket (that comes later) they bring a plate of veggies- carrots, celery, cukes, jicama and pepperocinis. Served with ranch. I think they put cottage cheese in there for texture. Yum. The ribs. They need flavor, but they were hands down the most tender I have had in the OC. Anywhere. Pull out the bone and cut with fork tender. The steak. Rare, perfect. Personally I've never had a restaurant steak I could cut with a fork before. Flawless and tasty. Veggies. Perfectly steamed and fresh. Bonus. Mexican Shrimp cocktail. No spices, just tomato, onion, cukes, cilantro and big fresh shrimp. I dug them out, cut them up, put them back in and ate it like soup. Delish. Cocktail sauce. Sweet tomato base with the perfect (perfect if you really like horseradish) amount of horseradish. The Bomb. And they sell the sauce and homemade plain horseradish to take home. A pint is $5 each. I froze some since we can't go through that much that fast. My eyes were watering! Yum. We told our server we were splitting. They brought it out already divided, and cut the steak before cooking. Attention to detail. Nice. Lows: Lobster tail was pretty small and seriously overcooked and rubbery. For the price, this get s a 'whatever' The House Italian Shrimp salad dressing. Bland Italian with a nasty previously frozen pasty limp shrimp. Yuck. Sad, 'cuz the salad is quality ingredients. Next time I stick with Ranch. Hubby said his oysters weren't shucked very well.
