Heard about this place through IG. Ordered 3 items but definitely my favorite from all 3 would be the chili crab. The chili crab were sooo good especially the sauce it's cook with. I originally didn't expect that it'll be the whole crab when I ordered but seeing the price, it made all sense. It's definitely not an everyday type of food to order especially with how much it sells for (I think it's market price) but definitely worth to try when you're able to. Maybe they can sell something similar for cheaper price. The Imperial Tofu is sooo good too especially the housemade bean curd. Very delicious. Not a fan of the abalone but it didn't ruin the dish for me as I enjoyed the rest of it anyways. The other dish reminded me of pad see eew. It didn't really have a flavor by itself unless you add the shrimp paste sauce it comes with separately. Not a fan of the sauce, so I ate it as it is. The service can definitely be improved on. We're aware that we need to wait for some time (like 20 mins) but we're sure that we waited longer than that. But when the food is ready they all came pretty much at the same time. So maybe next time, if the other dishes takes a little longer, serve at least one of the dishes first or something. This restaurant is really a casual dining. I grew up eating South East Asian cuisine and always find myself craving it. I knew I had to swing by and try this place out when I was in town. I stopped in on an early Saturday afternoon, the place was packed, and all the tables were full. I had to wait a bit until a table was available to order. I ordered the ayam penyet, the chicken was well seasoned. The skin was golden and crispy, and the meat succulent. All the accoutrements were flavorful and complimented the dish. Don't forget to use the house made sauces too! I had to try the char way teow. It was served atop a banana leaf. Another dish packed with umami flavor, and wasn't too greasy, and definitely did not disappoint. Chicken Licious was definitely worth the wait for its authentic flavors and good portion sizes. Our party of 4 arrived at Chicken Licious around 12:30pm on a Saturday on a rainy day, and the place was a welcoming warm refuge from the outside. Parking was a little scarce in the lot but not too bad. You order at the front off of the menu above, and then can grab self serve chicken broth, a variety of sauces/condiments, water, utensils, napkins. The person working behind the counter, who I believe may be the owner, was also the person bringing the dishes out, and was very friendly. The chicken broth was rich, and almost tasted like pork broth to me, and lightly sweet from probably vegetables? Regardless, very welcome way to start the meal. We got everything to share: Roti Canai $11: this came out fresh and hot, with delicious flaky crispy layers. The sauce it came with had great umami, and when we expressed how much we liked it the owner offered to bring us more - this sauce went really well with everything else too! Nasi Lemak $18: this comes with both pork and chicken which were so tender and flavorful. The combination of the lemongrass rice, spicy sambal and pickles/salad was perfect, and it was a very large portion. Bak Kut Teh $20: this was very unique, and you can definitely smell the mix of herbs, but I didn't really taste it as strongly. The soup was surprisingly sweet, and while interesting it wasn't my personal favorite. There was a generous amount of meat inside, which was perfectly cooked but not quite fall off the bone. Asam Laksa Penang $19: this was my favorite dish, and so flavorful! I really enjoyed the brightness and freshness that the mint and pineapple brought to the dish, and it definitely did get a little spicy towards the end. It's very rich though, so I'm glad we had other dishes to switch between. Prawn Mee $18: this was a really nice, clean, prawn flavored both with really tender chicken and large prawns. I enjoyed the texture of having two types of noodles, and this worked perfectly as a palate cleanser between the much stronger fragrant flavors of the other dishes. Overall, I really enjoyed Chicken Licious! All of the dishes had their distinct, fragrant flavor profiles, and all the portions were very generous and perfect for sharing. Finally caved and checked out Chicken Licious after hearing so much about their ckt. And yup, it lives up to the hype. Portion's generous for the price, and they actually have pork lard in it (!!), which is super rare here but so common (and flavorful) back in Malaysia. Wok hei is on point too. Got tempted to try something else and went for the asam laksa after. Wow, easily the most authentic one we've had in the area. The broth is so rich and flavorful, packed with that perfect tangy-spicy kick. And it comes with fried beancurd too?? Omg I loved it. I'd honestly buy a whole pack of those if they sold them on the side. Total comfort food, 10/10. Food took a bit of time to come out, but honestly worth the wait. Plus, the uncles serving us were so friendly and kept checking in to make sure everything tasted good. Will definitely be back! I forgot who recommended this place to me but I was impressed. Ran by a super friendly family from Southeast Asia, you already know it will be authentic. We got a handful of items for the two of us and the food was great, though the clams were a bit on the pricier side. Everything had a kick so be ready for the spicy sh... later. We had a takeout yesterday (Friday 5/22). We had ordered a Nasi Goreng and even discussed with the owners about my many trips to Penang, Singapore. They had to know I knew what Nasi Goreng is. When I came home, it was not Basi Goreng but an Indian rice dish with 4 small/medium shrimps, 4-5 baby bock choys and a few tomatoes that were unrecognizable and 3-4 tiny tofus. Mainly, oily fried rich and light years from any Indian dish. I think the ingredients cost maybe $2 but with tax it was $20. We were overjoyed finding a replacement of our favorite Malaysian restaurant in Santa Clara Banana Leaf but we have to keep Looking. Everything was bland, overpriced. I came here for dinner one evening and ordered the Char Kway Teow 炒粿條 and Ayam Penyet "印尼炸鸡" - Smashed fried chicken. The Char Kway Teow was recommended by the staff, it's stir fried noodles with shrimp, chinese sausage, bean sprouts and chives. This was a little too greasy and not much wok hay. The ayam penyet came with a large piece of fried chicken (drumstick and thigh). Chicken didn't have much flavor but the skin was fried to crispy, it was reasonably moist. It had sauce on the side with pickled veggies, salad, coconut rice with chicken fat bits. You needed a sauce for the chicken otherwise no flavor. It's nice that they do have a sauce bar where you can pick your sauces. They also provide some for your order. Food came out quickly after ordering and there is parking but this lot can be quite busy. I'll definitely come back to try their other dishes since I don't see or hear much about Malaysian food such as trying their laksa and nasi lemak. read more

After seeing so many reviews on social media being the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in San Jose, of course we had to try it. Chickenlicious started off by two chefs, Kevin and his brother they had chicken rice bento in the beginning of their career. They still sell chicken bento up to this point, and they are so delicious! You would find chicken that is juicy, moist, soaked with light soy sauce, with very tasty hainan rice. The second dish I rave about this place is their Char Kwey Tiaw. This is unbelievably delicious. First because they cooked it with pork lard, second, they use fresh ingredients to make this dish. I would definitely re-order this CKT for future visits. Third dish I would order for family and friends sharing is their Singaporean Chili Crab. They used Dungeness Crab showered with sweet, and spicy sauce, with eggs simmered on it. It was delicious! Fourth dish I would have it again is their Assam Penang Laksa. I believe they are the only restaurant that makes this dish. This is one of the best laksa I ever had. The broth tastes seafoody, and fresh at the same time since they use pineapple to freshen and balance the seafood out. Amazing dish! Cute little spot off of Story road with adorable decor. Walked in and was greeted right away, seems to be the owner but he was nice and kind. We placed our order to go since it was 45mins before closing we did not want to hold them up so they can get home for the night and as we waited for our order he gave us cups for the chicken soup dispenser. We decided on the chili crab, mee goreng and the morning glory Togo and was packaged nicely all within 20mins. They also packed bibs and utensils for us as well. The aroma was so appealing we couldn't wait to dig in and was piping hot! Everything was nicely seasoned and flavorful. We came here on a Wed afternoon craving chicken rice after the lunch rush so the place was totally empty and we were able to put in our order immediately. The restaurant itself is located in an old strip mall. Very clean and the sauce bar was a nice touch. The free soup that comes with every order was warm and a little sweet and herbal. Not my favorite. The Hainan chicken came out about 15 minutes after we ordered - which felt like a long time. Maybe a good sign that everything would be fresh and awesome? Not really... The chicken was super moist but totally flavorless. The soy based sauce it was swimming in was totally bland as well. All of the sauces from the sauce bar seemed really diluted in flavor as well. The rice came out dry. Probably the best thing in the plate was the pickled cabbage- it was bright and crunchy with great seasoning. Chicken Licious has blown up on social media with food vloggers advertising their famous Malayasian dishes like their Char kway teo and chili crab. The question is.. is there some truth to behind whats being promoted or is it merely just a paid advertisement? Well we had to see for ourselves. Located on Senter in an older, more run down plaza if San Jose, Chicken Licious is situated among various Vietnamese restaurants along with a Lee's Supermarket. If you're not familiar with this area or plaza in general, it is quite old and full of sketchy people. There are a lot of homeless people hanging around soliciting money. I would suggest only coming here during daytime and daytime only. That shouldn't be a problem since this place closes pretty early around 7 pm and last call being 6:30 pm. *Char kway teo - This dish is not commonly found in the Bay so of course, I had to try it. The noodles have that wok hay flavor with bits of charred lap cheong and shrimp. I would prefer the shrimp to be peeled or deep fried to oblivion so that the skin is crispy. No one wants to peel a shrimp in the middle of their meal. Flavors are all on point with a few bites that are a bit too salty with the sausage. Just needs some chili and call it a day! *Singaporean Laksa - The broth is creamy, rich, with a kick of spice. The noodles are eggy, thick, and substantial. This isn't the traditional noodle type used in laksa but it is my preferred noodle so no complaints from me. The meat was delicious and all around a bowl of comfort. *Roti - This is by far, hands down the best roti I have tried in the States. Not too greasy, but each bite you get the fluffy soft bread. The texture is airy yet full of flakey layers. The curry itself is very forward in spices and dimensional flavors. I would prefer a more mild creamy tasting curry in my opinion. I would probably buy the roti and find a different curry to dip it in. *Curry puff- These were delicious. Every bite took me back to being in Singapore. The pastry crust was buttery, flakey, a bit crumbly but so delicious. The curry filling was strong on the curry flavor and filled with bits of meat. A nice balance of flavors and filling ratio. I would get this again. *Mouthwatering chicken- the chicken was tender, soft, and moist. The sauce was a bit punchy, overwhelming in flavor especially when drenched on the chicken. I did enjoy it though. I thought it was weird that it came out in a disposable box rather than a plate. When you mix and match disposable dishes to non-disposable, i feel like it cheapens the meal. The restaurant is much cleaner than I expected. The interior is quite charming despite outside being a bit rougher. The self serve water and chicken broth was an excellent touch. I also loved the sauces pre packed and available to help yourself. In terms of food quality, I have no notes. The food is authentic, served fresh, and thoughtfully crafted. This place feels like you've literally stepped back into Malaysia without the high temperatures and humidity. Best Char Kueh Teow in the Bay Area. Tried many versions of CKT from Georgetown in Penang to Chinatown in Manhattan. Chickenlicious is at the top of the list. Wok hay, flavor, and liao (ingredients) exceeded expectations. Texture was just right, which can be challenging for this type of flat rice noodle. Shrimp was very fresh and cooked just right. Just missing the cockles. Roti Canai was excellent. Usually go to the morning market in PJ old town to buy from the mamak stall. The curry sauce at chickenlicious was high quality, and is typically what I use to judge my roti in the US. However, the bread itself was way out of the leagues of any of the roti Canai I've had outside of Malaysia. It did not taste frozen. Texture was flakey, crispy, and soft all at the same time. This brought me back to breakfast time at my grandparents house in PJ. Nostalgic. My family also tried the mee goreng, nasi lemak, chicken rice, and Penang laksa (with ipoh influence). My mom said the laksa was even better the next day, and she liked that it came with a generous helping of tofu skin to absorb the soup. Chickenlicious also offers complimentary chicken broth at the counter, for digestion. We were looking for a Malaysian spot to try out in SJ and landed on Chicken Licious. They're located on Senter Market in a veeery busy plaza. The parking lot can be rather tight and it could be difficult to find a spot to park if you're coming during a busy hour. We ended up ordering a few things to share: + Hainan Chicken (4/5): I LOOOVED the chicken! The chicken was super moist and flavorful. It reminded me of Singapore! The rice was just okay, as were the side sauces it came with. + Nasi Lemak (2.5/5): I felt like the pieces of meat that we were given were mostly bones. The sambal didn't quite hit for me either, I was hoping that they'd provide more anchovies on the side too. + Roti Canai (3.5/5): Obsessed with the roti but the sauce tasted rather bland :( + Laksa Penang (2.5/5): Also another miss for us - I thought it was good initially, but as we continued eating the lack of broth started to make the noodles all congealed and mushy. I'd pass on this next time! The pros: They serve free soup here and it's pretty good! They keep it pretty clean and service is friendly, too. The downsides: they use a lot of plastic utensils and dishes, which can be convenient if you don't finish your meal. Service is pretty good. Place is a little small and not alot of big tables. I really like the food. Their chicken broth is so good and you can get as much as you want. I like the idea of self service for getting sauces/topping/utensils/drink and soup. I just wish the plastic cups for sauces are a little bigger especially for the radish/jalapeño sauce. The food can be spicy for people who cannot eat/like spicy food. I like Char kway teow, curry mee, kangkung belacan, mee goreng. I like Ayam Bakar as well but I like think my fried chicken was a little overcooked (the meat becomes very dry). You really can't go wrong with much here: the almost everything I've tried is delicious. The Singaporean Laksa, Popcorn chicken, and the Nasi Lemak are coconut-infused and very, very fragrant and flavorful. What a delightful find! Tucked away amongst the shops, I discovered this wonderful 3-year-old in a business Malaysian restaurant. The owner was incredibly welcoming and helpful. I loved the self-serve beef broth station, the variety of chili sauces, and the refreshing beverage options like Thai tea. I opted for the smashed chicken and nasi lemak, which were delicious! Don't let the name confuse you! This isn't a fried chicken place haha, I had to explain this to my friends. Since I have Singaporean family, I get super excited when I hear of Singaporean food in the bay! Singaporean restaurants are far and between, and often times the quality isn't nearly as good as the real thing in SG. Chicken Licious has a simplified menu of ~10 dishes with pictures (reminiscent of hawker center menus), making ordering nice and easy. Some dishes do come in bento boxes, making this place a convenient place to order takeout. I do like that they had self service seasoning (eg sambal sauce), water, and chicken soup bar. We were able to sit a larger group of ~9 people here at one big table. -- Food -- I had very high expectations and while the food was good and delicious, it wasn't what I was expecting. Perhaps some of these difference can be explained via a Malaysian v Singaporean cooking approach. The laksa tasted like it was missing something, possibly laksa leaves themselves. The Hainanese Chicken also was unexpected -- it came pre-drenched in soy sauce, which was a first for me and disappointing. I love the simplicity of the juicy chicken with the ginger x scallion x shallots paste, but the soy sauce was very overpowering. Char Kway Teow was good! They also had dishes that are Indonesian and they were delicious. I just wish they had more Singaporean dishes that I miss and crave. Been wanting to try this place because of the hype and how the food looked. Not sure if we got a bad batch, but the flavor was very lacking... Got the Nasi Lemak and the Mee Goreng. The Nasi Lemak dish was ok, the curry chicken looked very appetizing and I thought it would be savory and packed with flavor, but it tasted like an unsalted curry paste with oil. At least the chicken was cooked nicely since it was tender. Maybe it needed more seasoning? I was a bit shocked though. The Mee-Goreng was also just ok, I definitely tasted the wok-hay flavor, but yet again that's all I could taste. Very bland even though it looks very saucy which made me surprised again. The redeeming factor for this restaurant was that they had a sauce bar and I had to use that for both dishes since it was missing the savory factor. Read about this unassuming place serving good Malaysian food and was craving for Laksa so decided to brave 101 traffic to give this place a try. And my was that an amazing decision. The person at the counter (who i presume is the owner) asked me if I had questions or what I was looking for. I asked him about nasi Goreng and he mentioned he had two varieties of it. But since wife wasn't feeling like having rice, she went for the mee goreng. I asked about the difference between Singapore Laksa and the Penang Laksa. He explained them it and I decided to go for the Singaporean Laksa. The Singaporean Laksa was 10/10 in presentation. Fish balls, sliced eggs, and nice juicy piece of skin on chicken as well as a flavorful hot broth with thick yellow noodles. Very comforting dish with plenty of spicy kick and amazing flavor. Just what I came in for. The Nasi Goreng reminded me of the excellent ones I had in Bali in the good resorts. The noodles were covered in plenty of umami spice paste and I could taste the aromatics. My first time having Singaporean dish and I really enjoyed the food. We had appetizer like the roti and egg rolls. We ordered 3 dishes. . i don't know the name but it was a dish with fat noodles and chicharron ( crispy meat). , a rice dish with prawns, and tofu dish with abalone and shrimp and cauliflower ( it's house special that you have to wait a bit ). Besides all these, they have a free soup and it was self serve ( i believe it's all you can eat). The service is great as you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Very happy to find authentic Malaysian restaurant in South SJ. They have very good char Kwai teow and mee goreng. You can definitely taste the wok hey and you can taste a bit of a kick to it. The Nasi lemak however is very spicy so I recommend getting Hainanese chicken rice for those who can't eat spicy. This place is amazing, and the flavors brought me back to Singapore. You walk in and order from a kiosk but the guy behind the counter, ended up taking our order. Gave us the complimentary cup for the broth and had a seat after we ordered. Curry Mee 5/5 = The flavors are so rich and deep, that it's nothing like I've had here in the states. You can put the curry broth on anything, and it will taste good. When you get towards the end, it's a bit salty but I'm coming back and ordered this every time. Belachan Kang Kung - 4/5 Vietnamese, and Filipino people have their own take on this dish. This one had little shrimps in it that made it extra salty. So I would eat this with a bowl of rice. It's good but a bit on the salty side, which is the flavor profile. Roti - 5/5 The roti came out super hot, so hot that you could barely touch it. The curry sauce is a totally different flavor profile than the Curry Mee. It's a bit pricey with only 2 in an order but excellent in flavor. Mee Goreng - 4/5 - Good flavors, they put some herbs in there that you normally don't see in the US. Great spot, unique flavors. Their chicken is not that licious, while the chicken itself was tender, it lacked flavor and tasted quite bland. The rice, which should usually be aromatic and rich, was also much too bland for what this dish is supposed to offer. I may still go back but definitely gonna get something else. read more
