This place is amazing, and the flavors brought me back to Singapore. You walk in and order from a kiosk but the guy behind the counter, ended up taking our order. Gave us the complimentary cup for the broth and had a seat after we ordered. Curry Mee 5/5 = The flavors are so rich and deep, that it's nothing like I've had here in the states. You can put the curry broth on anything, and it will taste good. When you get towards the end, it's a bit salty but I'm coming back and ordered this every time. Belachan Kang Kung - 4/5 Vietnamese, and Filipino people have their own take on this dish. This one had little shrimps in it that made it extra salty. So I would eat this with a bowl of rice. It's good but a bit on the salty side, which is the flavor profile. Roti - 5/5 The roti came out super hot, so hot that you could barely touch it. The curry sauce is a totally different flavor profile than the Curry Mee. It's a bit pricey with only 2 in an order but excellent in flavor. Mee Goreng - 4/5 - Good flavors, they put some herbs in there that you normally don't see in the US. Great spot, unique flavors. We had a takeout yesterday (Friday 5/22). We had ordered a Nasi Goreng and even discussed with the owners about my many trips to Penang, Singapore. They had to know I knew what Nasi Goreng is. When I came home, it was not Basi Goreng but an Indian rice dish with 4 small/medium shrimps, 4-5 baby bock choys and a few tomatoes that were unrecognizable and 3-4 tiny tofus. Mainly, oily fried rich and light years from any Indian dish. I think the ingredients cost maybe $2 but with tax it was $20. We were overjoyed finding a replacement of our favorite Malaysian restaurant in Santa Clara Banana Leaf but we have to keep Looking. Everything was bland, overpriced. Food is average, all the curries are spicy (expected, but for kids, maybe slightly less spicy option would be good). The ayam penyet is really dry. Roti canai is pretty decent, but unfortunately came with thick gravy instead of regular curry to scoop up with. Nasi lemak itself has good sambal and decent acar, but the rice itself is not as fragrant as one would hope for. Ayam rendang is also slightly on the dry side. The place is nice and clean though. The restaurant was completely empty on a weekday late afternoon, when I arrived. The person who handed me the food had a Malaysian accent, feel very authentic! I appreciated that they were careful with how they packaged the food - especially with the laksa. They made sure the separate the noodles from the soup and the crispy piece. In terms of food, I think that they could use a bit more wok hei for the char kuey tiao, and a bit more spice for the curry puff. I thought that their laksa was delicious though. Very shoik! We ordered the: Ayam Penyet smashed fried chicken: this was delicious! The pickled veggies and the roasted peanuts were a great complement to the crispy fried chicken. It also came with a piece of fried tofu. The fresh chili garlic sauce was super spicy and the rice was good. At $18 it is a bit on the pricier side and we would have wanted more chicken. Ayam Bakar: similar to the Ayam Penyet only that this chicken was saltier as it sat in a garlicky sweet soy sauce. I preferred this one because it had coconut rice. It also came with roasted peanuts and pickled veggies. Overall the food was delicious! They have bunch of sauces you can try but I prefer the ginger scallion oil. For our entrees, we tried the hainan chicken, ayam bakar bbq chicken, and chow kueh teow. The food was great tasting, and the service was great. I wanted this to be good. I really did. I'll start with the two highlights: The crab. That was good. Very good. The service was also excellent. Fast and friendly. Cantonese is nice to hear. Cantopop music was a nice touch and nostalgic. The restaurant was clean and the shopping center is one I grew up going to so it had nostalgia, comfort, and familiarity working for it at the outset. Then we got the Hainan chicken, the Nasi Lemak, and the Chicken Ho-Fun. Nope. Nope. Nope. Sad to report you can get better Hainanese chicken for less money at the Lee's Supermarket in the same shopping center. How? Nasi Lemak is the national dish and is usually so packed with food and flavor it knocks you out. This was not that. Ipoh Garden in San Mateo is the standard and this one fell well short. Chicken Ho Fun is one of my personal faves and this was seriously lacking. Most pho places do this better. Chicken licious this was not. Pho Ga 88 remains the standard. I come by this shopping center a lot and I want the restaurants here to do well (there's been some turnover). I hope this place turns around cause it provides a great option in addition to all the Vietnamese food in the area. First time trying Malaysian food and it did not disappoint. I got the Nasi lemak which is Malaysia most popular dish, which consists of fragrant rice and some braised chicken and pickled vegetables. The flavors of this dish were unique and extremely delicious. Definitely different from other southeast Asian food that I'm used to eating. Partner and I got introduced to Chicken Licious, and mentioned they had Asam Laksa, so we decided to give it a try. The Asam Laksa came with a flavorful broth, with various toppings, and noodles. The Ayam Penyet Smashed Fried Chicken has a spicy (sambal?) sauce to go along with the chicken. They also had nice flavored rice, fried tofu, and pickled vegetables with the dish as well. I quite enjoy the dishes, they are all well made and have a unique flavor. The Miscellaneous The restaurant is in a plaza known as Caribbees Center. The plaza is quite big with a good amount of parking, but the parking is quite weird and narrow. The interior has a bright aesthetic. Upon entry, there is a waiting area with a flower wall decor. The main dining room is spacious with decent seating. The staff and service was good. We had a short chat with the owners on how hard it was to source all the ingredients for Asam Laksa. Their menu has a good selection of dishes, focusing on Bento and Noodle. But they also have Snack, Side, Dessert, etc. If you are looking for some authentic Malaysian food, I would recommend giving this place a try. Finally got to try this new place! Took my Vietnamese parents here to try Malaysian food. We only saw one worker here and he may be the one making the food too. A new Malaysian spot in San Jose? Count me in. It's in a Vietnamese strip mall, so kind of a hidden gem. The inside is clean and empty, kind of like a cafeteria. You order from an iPad. If you're eating in, the employees give you plates and a cup for chicken broth. You grab drinks from a fridge after you order. There's a little self serve condiment/sauce bar. We ordered the roti canai, char kway teow, crispy popcorn chicken, and hakka pan mee (dry). My partner's hakka pan mee came out as soup, which was a bummer. The soup was just okay, not super flavorable, not memorable. He was a little sad about it. Roti canai was awesome. We could have eaten just that alone. Char kway teow is always a classic. No complaints there. And popcorn chicken is hard to do wrong. Everything was VERY HOT. Like temperature hot. It took us a while to eat because it was just so dang hot. The chicken is super tender and is drenched in a mild soy sauce, and on the side comes with these crunchy, tangy veggies.
