Just passing Chico's draws your attention to the outside surroundings. This was my first time and won't be my last I'll be back. Take out during the Corona virus safer at home pandemic. This place blows your mind, the menu is HUGE. Met the owner as soon as I walked in. Sincerely friendly and most definitely accommodating. The sweetest man. A SMALL HOLE IN THE WALL that delivers BIG TASTY FOOD. Maybe six to seven tables inside that can occupy 15 to 20 people MAX so definitely not a place for big groups. The night I came here was a TWO WOMEN SHOW (one in the front cashier taking orders and one in the back does the cooking). The FRESH GUACAMOLE... loved it!!! The chorizo, eggs, rice and beans all delicious!!! The chicken soup flavorful and hot. Be prepared to WAIT (one woman chef/cook) but I didn't "mind" it as I was with Mary Jane and she keeps me patiently happy. The area and parking - cramped parking right next with the apartment complex. Aww! I feel like I just want to give Chico's a big smushy hug. This place is just adorably cute. About ten tables, and one dude running the show in a little yellow shack near Figueroa. 2 cokes, 2 cervesas, chips and salsa, guacamole, chicken nachos, burrito, and one taco platter later, mi hermano y yo were begging for mercy. Dear god, why did I eat so much? Oh right, because it was cheap and yummy. We got out for 35 bucks (including tip). Not too shabby. All that was missing was a little festive musica. PS- In the market for some vitamins and/or Salmon oil pills? You got one stop shopping here. We've recently moved here and were happy to see the big vegetarian sign on their wall. Upon closer inspection: 'we specialize in vegetarian mexican seafood'! Umm, lemme think about that for a sec :D In any case, the boy is pescaterian, so he's all set. Don't expect much vegetarian options here, but their potato taco is great - the soft one is a mini meal in itself, so is their salsas (and they aren't tightfisted about it like some other places can be). The guacamole is fantastic, I swear they squeeze like three avocados into a $5 order! The boy loves the orchata, the shrimp cocktail and the fried fish tacos. You can get a lot of good food for little money and it's walking distance. I also like that they try to use cut off cardboard boxes for to-go orders instead of bagging up everything. The minus one star is for the lack of vegetarian choices. Yeah yeah, I know what you're thinking: it's mexican, eat the meat, damn it! But if you advertise vegetarian, maybe you should offer more than just salad and potato tacos :) read more

I like to rate my Mexican food spots by how good the Orchata is. It never fails me - if the Orchata is "okay" then the food is going to be "okay". My first sip of the Orchata at Chico's set it up for me: This place was going to have some great food. The first things I tried at Chico's were the Sopes (Carne Asada & Al Pastor) and they blew me away. I've also tried their Tamales (maybe they get them from Mom's because they reminded me a bit of theirs), I also have had their Caldo de Res, the Torta (de Milanesa) and seafood dishes - everything this spot serves is above average. I live within walking distance and sometimes meet clients for lunch and I usually end up driving miles away to meet people at horrible so-called Mexican food restaurants that are much larger/fancier looking and the food is not even 1/2 as good as Chico's. I am going to start insisting people come to my neighborhood and meet me here for lunch instead. read more

I have been here twice when I've come to the Los Angeles area. They have great enchiladas there. I've ordered chicken and cheese ones with green sauce. The sauce is tangy and a little spicy at the same time. It's a great combination! The portions are a nice size and the entrees come with re-fried beans and rice. Their horchata (rice drink with cinnamon) tastes great! They serve chips and homemade salsa. This last time it was a little too spicy for me, but I still enjoyed the fresh chips! The restaurant's reasonably priced, and I seem to get the same server lady each time and she's very friendly! It's a small hole-in-the-wall place, but sometimes those are the best places to go to! read more

Chico's never fails to disappoint for delicious, inexpensive, and fresh Mexican fare. The salsa is spicy, the guacamole is flavorful (and seems to be made after you order it), and the dishes are always well seasoned. The service staff here is terrific. I think most of my friends are secretly in love with the lady with the sensible shoes and the great smile! Not only is she beautiful, but she is also a kind and attentive server. Chico's also has a charming cafe atmosphere, with an excellent mural painted on the interior walls (and a retro starburst clock that I am totally jealous of!). So freakin' cute! Ok, I know it's been a while, like, a year (yikes!) but I'm back in reviewin' action. And I thought I'd start it off positive. My sister moved into her new 'hood and I think I'm just as, if not more, stoked than her to explore the area. We decided to go out to dinner the other night, with no destination in mind. Just let our intuition guide us as we drove down Figueroa and it led us right to this adorable bright yellow building. We sat in one of the red and green booths underneath the hanging parrot. A mini space heater kept as warm and dried us off from the pouring rain we just sprinted through. We all ordered something different, which ranged from chicken tamales to green enchiladas to carnitas sopes and they were all delicious! Super tasty and not heavy at all. We also got chips, salsa and guac which were legit. Fresh & spicy. Plus the dishes all came with rice & beans, also yummy. Can't wait to go back and try something else, maybe one of their seafood dishes.... Lots of character, good food, and great service, hence the 5 stars! read more

I love this place. We live around the corner and eat here all the time. The Guacamole and salsa are heavenly and fresh. The beef taquitos are excellent, as are the flautas ,although they can be a little greasy. Their green chili stew is the best for when you have a cold, and I love the cheese enchiladas with red sauce, you can really taste the chili. The service is always very friendly, it's a nice family place, the food taste tasty and fresh.....and it's really clean(ish). Oh and they have red booths. I love booths. Hint: They sometimes close early (if it's a slow night), so it's best to call ahead. read more

Maybe I didn't come to the right place? Yellow building with a bunch of paintings on it? Maybe people just shouldn't come in the morning, the waitress/ possibly owner of the restaurant was very pushy and rude. Our food was NOT fresh and SUPER salty. The complimentary chips they gave us were stale as if they left them out the night before. I had the Huevos Rancheros and my boyfriend had some kind of meat scramble. Everything I had on my plate came from a can or came from a package except the eggs, which were over cooked. We waited at least 30 minutes for our food and there was maybe 3 other tables in the restaurant. We were hoping for delicious authentic food, as our good friend recommended this place. Also, they got my order wrong as well, which didn't help their cause. I had just gotten back last night from Mexico City where the food is AMAZING. It's worth the 4 hour flight. Fare warning, don't come here unless you want to pay good money for sub par food. Best to hit up one of those taco trucks for cheaper and more authentic food. read more

First time for lunch to-day, and I thought I would try something ordinary. The enchilada verde didn't work for me--the verde sauce was synthetic and a color of green that was closer to neon than tomatillo. It appeared my friend's burrito was good. Service a little off, chips were stale. Not enthused to go back but might try it again if the day was simply an off one or something. I like that end of Highland Park, though. The restaurant wasn't busy for the noon hour, which I'm sure they're not pleased about but it if you can dependably get a seat in a restaurant like that without waiting that's a plus. The building is cool and the murals are festive. There are so many good Mexican places in Highland Park to compete with it, though, it just has to get it right all the time, and for me it didn't to-day. read more

I was at Antigua one day and decided to try out their Mexican out of curiosity. This obnoxious girl walks up to me and says with an air of disapproval, "Is that burrito better than Chico's?" I shrug. She looks perturbed. After a sigh she says, "well is it the best burrito you've ever had?" I shake my head. I hate unsolicited advice from strangers. Either way it got stuck in my head and I went to Chico's last week to see if they actually had the best burrito in the land. My conclusion: damn close. There's something extra special in it, like maybe a hint of cinnamon in the beans? Any way you slice it this is a way above-average burrito. My tamarindo was good, too. I'm holding off on the fifth star until I try more of their food, but I'm on a no meat in restaurants kick and their veggie options are limited. Thanks, obnoxious girl! read more

We ordered vegetarian burritos, which were loaded with potatoes, to go. Yuck! While potatoes have their place occasionally in a taco or breakfast burrito, they should never be the foundation of a vegetarian burrito or any burrito, for that matter. The potatoes appeared to have been cooked with cilantro. I have a very sturdy stomach, but this wrongful concoction made both my wife and I reach for the Tums. Been coming here forever (even when I lived in northern cal) and the food here is consistently delicious. Try the chile rellenos, tacos dorados, beef taquitos, flautas, tampiquena, tostadas, etc. You can customize your plate orders, and every new person recommended to come here says they get wonderful service, and keep coming back to try different items as they bring other friends and family. chico's is still one of our favorite places to eat in highland park. i can actually say my wife and i have had everything on the menu and our favorites in order of regularity are the shrimp burrito and the steak tampequena. the sopes are pretty amazing and most of the shrimp dishes (especially the diablo shrimp) are great. their guacamole is a must and the shrimp salad is a rare treat, but always great in the summer. also you can never go wrong with the huevos rancheros or the chiliquiles for breakfast read more

I gotta admit the outside of this place was a bit off putting to me for a while. Something just didn't seem clean..I know weird. But one afternoon after driving around a bit..tired of all the same ol places..me & the kid gave it a go. SO Happy!! The waitress is very friendly, as is the man(I'm thinking owner) that seems to kick it in there. It is a very tiny place with just a few tables. We have now been twice & had a good experience both times. The chips & salsa are really good...salsa is bit spicier than other places so if you have tummy troubles you've been warned. The carne asada was yummy..nice flavor..tender meat. Love the salsa verde on the enchiladas..not too big on the chicken. There was not a very good bean to meat ratio in the burrito but it still tasted good. Me and and the Ms, took the gold-line to southwest museum station and stopped in here before we took a walk up and through mount washington (secret stairs tour #7). We had a sope with al pastor, cheese and chile tamale, and the Caldo de Siete de Mare. Everything was really good. the sope was crispy on the outside and soft inside, and the al pastor was really good also. The Tamale was also good, a nice soft but firm consistency, not like the chewy frozen ones I am used to. The caldo de mare was huge and really good, although he soup itself could have been a but less salty. It tasted really good though. It absorbed a lot of the seafood flavor, kind of like a mexican bouillabaisse of haemultang. The fish was halibut collar, not crappy tilapia filets which you get in so many other places nowadays. The shrimp even tasted good. The crab was a little disappointing; I guess unless you get fresh crab there is not much you could do. The octopus was tender and tasted great, only wish there was more of it. The place is not fast food, it took a while but waiting was worth it. One yelper complained it was a place for the gringo's and there were more authentic places around. I'll have to try them.. But there were latinos eating there besides out non-latino selves. read more

Chico's is a gem among the other similar restaurants in Highland Park. They get the basics down with flavor and get downright yummy with more than a few choice items. The Steak Malenaise is just the right kind of breaded and succulent , the Carnitas is a perfect balance of tang and kick and the seafood specialties are something I look forward to sampling more of. Chico's is fresh, authentic, affordable, home style Mexican food. Nothing fancy here, but you're getting the real deal. The guacamole is insanely good - they make it fresh for every order and it is chunky and delicious. The best things I've had here are their combination plates (with choice of tacos, enchiladas, etc.) and the huevos rancheros. I had a burrito once and it was packed with vegetables that didn't really seem to fit with the flavor of the burrito, so I'd probably pass on a burrito in the future. This is the best Mexican food in this neighborhood! Extraordinary home cooked style food, like from a mom's kitchen. It's not fancy but it's authentic and very flavorful. The service is just marvelous. I love the decor as well. It feels very Mexico. Everything we've tried so far has been heavenly delicious.
