We are such fans of the Chile En Nogada - a very special central Mexico dish that is usually served for weddings and celebrations - featuring a white almond sauce and pomegranates - historically pomegranates were in season in december - now we get them year round - but this seasonal aspect made the dish very special in Mexico. Funny thing about this place is that the service isn't spectacular, but the food. The food is what keeps me coming back. I've visited Chili Verde at least 10x in the last year. It's next to a pinata shop, and always looked like it was closed (it is on Mondays...just FYI), so I'm glad that I found this little oasis. During my first visit, my friend and I ordered the ceviche as an appetizer. I've only ordered it one other time since then, and the third time won't be the charm there. It was bland and kind of chewy. During other visits I have enjoyed devouring the: *Rib-eye Crepe "Yum." *Chili Verde "Decent, and you have to order it at least once." *Crepas Poblanas "I'd order it again." *Carne Asada "Had to see if it lived up to my San Diego expectations...it was pretty close." Chile Verde has one standout menu item for me though. *Chile en Nogada I'm usually the kind of girl who wants dinner to be a shared experience. I want everyone to order different things so we can have a little bit of everything. This is the only dish I've had that I will be totally okay with everyone at the table ordering. My Mole Poblano had no more than three bites of chicken at the most. Also, there appeared to be only one person to wait on customers in addition to fixing drinks at the bar. She did her best but the service was clearly impacted. Because our experience was so positive in the past, we'll probably give this place another chance. I really enjoyed my sample of the dish and appreciated the fresh take on different flavor combinations. Drinks: We made it just in time for Happy Hour! The House Margs were tasty and pretty strong! Staff: Our server and the bartender were in a league of their own... super friendly and attentive! The service was a great compliment to our dining experience. There is a patio available that will open in the spring/summer. It is currently being remodeled and looks like it could be a promising venue during patio season! I really loved the feel of the place - great ambiance, art and enjoyed the 90s music playing. My only constructive critique would be to suggest more vegetarian options for dinner. The chef seems creative enough to deliver a couple more vegetarian entrees. With all of the development, I am sure more pescatarians (feature another fish outside of tilapia), vegetarians and vegans will be moving into the hood. When we came there was only 2 other people in the entire restaurant and the food wasn't good. I'm half Mexican so obviously I love authentic Mexican food but I even love fake Mexican food (like Qdoba, etc.), and I didn't enjoy my meal at all. The chicken in my burrito was so dry and flavorless it might as well have been tofu! I think I had about three bites. And.. this was after tailgating the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Isn't food always better after your 7 beers deep and slapping the bag all afternoon? I can't imagine if I was sober! I'm sorry but I'm serious LOL I really wanted to like this place because it's so close to where I live. I'm giving 2 stars because service was alright (but we were literally the only table our waiter had), they had a great complimentary salsa, and the price point was okay. YES! This is the same Chili Verde that used to be at 37th and Tejon in Highlands. They now finally have a dinning room as enjoyable as the food. We went last weekend and had our favorite dishes again. They now have craft beers on tap and a decent bar to sit at. Don't forget to have the chips/salsa. Enjoy! read more

I saw all the amazing reviews and I couldn't wait to check it out especially since it is so close to home. It is a decent-sized space and it was about half full when I was there. I ended up sitting at the bar where I got there just in time for happy hour (until 6PM), where I had a house margarita. I liked that it wasn't too sweet or made up of artificial or pre-made mixes. As for the food, I had the chile verde- go figure! The sauce was amazing but I wish I had some more chicken for the price. They also gave chips with three salsas and I pretty much polished off all those- all very good! I will say the service was great and the people super nice. It's good to see a trendier feeling spot opening up on Federal and it seems like that is going to continue throughout the neighborhood.
