Saw a FB post about Chill Spot Rendezvous and came in after a visit to Sushi Maruyama a few doors down. They offer an assortment of ice cream, desserts, and Filipino food (which is rare to find in San Mateo!). First things first, service is impeccable! We were welcomed by the owner, Maggie, her brother, Alex/Pogi, and Rose, the staff working the counter. Rose gave us a detailed breakdown of all the items they had to offer, including the ice cream of course. I ordered a single scoop of the Ferrero Nutella Hazelnut Fantasy which was great as a huge Nutella lover! Maggie then talked with us further about her career as an educator, therapist, and most recently, a business owner who wants to create a space for community which is an amazing intention. This place is awesome! Good food, awesome service, and the place really lives up to its name, chill. The garlic sticky rice was new for me. Flavor was good. Tocino and adobo were also really good. Out of the empanadas I liked the beef one the best. I wish it didn't have raisins though but I think raisins are standard in certain foods. Ice cream here is really flavorful and really creamy and dense. We also got halo halo and it's so good. We asked for no corn. I came in because I had a coupon meal to pick up and I'm so happy I stubbled across this awesome place! We were immediately greeted by once lady that was very nice and attentive! The location is a bit odd and it doesn't give the image of a quirky ice cream shop that also serves food and has a huge sitting area from the outside but once you step in you hit by a huge selection of ice cream flavors, drinks and hot meals. We got a chocolate iced drink, a chocolate ice cream and churro donut bites. Everything was super good! Not overly sweet which tends to happen with such a place and still very light, airy and flavorful. We enjoyed it so much we also got an empanada and that was also perfectly toasted, full of beef flavor and well seasoned and great size for the price. My friend and I were looking for a dessert spot after lunch, and I came across this place on Yelp! Upon entering, we were greeted so nicely by the owner and her family. You can tell it's a family-run business, and I find that very wholesome. They don't just have ice cream, they also have food and snacks you can eat as well. They are also working on making their own Italian ice (Mango, Lychee, Cherry, etc) which will be perfect for summer. The owner introduced us to their ice cream and how they make it in-house with the best ingredients. Their flavors were so unique, we had trouble deciding what to order. But luckily, they are very open to samples! I ended up getting the Ferrero Nutella Hazelnut Fantasy and I Love My Honey Very Matcha. Their ice cream flavors also had cute names with some takes on puns. The ice cream is very delicious, dense, and not too sweet which is good! There's plenty of tables to sit at after ordering. We came for the "Flavors of the Peninsula" special 4 courses plus special fruit drink for $33. The overhead lights were on the fritz in the room where we were seated. This room was like an ugly stepsister to the ice cream parlor beside it. There were lamps scattered about but the room just felt dark, grubby and unwelcoming. Nothing resembles the cozy photos on YELP. The food servings pictured on the advertisement for the special looked huge. The portions we got were tiny. And everything was drenched in fat. We don't like to waste food but we left a lot on the table rather than asking for take-out. I do give the owner credit for telling us about each dish as she presented it. She knew she was introducing us to Filipino food. I think the owner was overwhelmed -- doing impossible multi-tasking -- trying to ready our meal while serving ice cream to people who just dropped in For instance, we had to ask for utensils. I believe this is because they make all of their ice cream in-house. I knew what I wanted when I walked in the door and ordered a junior size Golden Cocoa Swirl, which consists of Ghirardelli chocolate and a caramel swirl. So delicious! The worker (a young girl with pink hair) was incredibly sweet and encouraged me to taste other flavors. She informed me that the Will Ube Mine was the most popular as this is a Filipino-owned business! I visited Chill Spot Rendezvous on a Thursday evening after work for the first time around 6 PM to do a Too Good To Go pickup and found the store front nearly empty with only one other customer in the side room working on their laptop. Whilst the kind staff member, Rose, was preparing my TGTG order she was generous enough to offer sample scoops of their ice cream. Even though I had initially only came in for a quick pickup operation, Rose encouraged me multiple times to try their ice cream, and emphasized that I should try as many as I would like. I sampled over a dozen flavors, many of them were unique with their own mix-ins, some were dairy free, and plenty were combinations not seen in other shops. By sample #2, the quality & flavor of their ice cream had already won me over. I knew I had to order a scoop after finishing my TGTG order, which was their delicious mini Dutch pancakes dusted in cinnamon sugar (8 pc), topped with a scoop of their Traditional Chocolate Ice Cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. It also came with an iced lemon tea & 10% off coupon. It was difficult to decide which flavors to choose after sampling so many that were great, but I ended up getting a double scoop with their Banana Coconut Cream Pie Pleasure & Vietnamese Velvet Coffee. My only constructive feedback would be that some flavors of ice cream had an over-frozen icy texture. They store all their flavors in a small freezer in containers stacked atop one another. This means that some flavors tend to be deeper in the freezer, thus colder, causing some parts of the scoop to be a bit icy. If they manage to fix this issue to get a smooth texture all of the time then the ice cream would be top-notch. I encourage anyone in the area to swing by and support this small business. They have about a dozen or so tables tucked inside, serve coffee, tea, and food as well so maybe it can become a work/study space for some. The hospitality shown by Rose was unmatched and the desserts were great. There are many signs posted inside with all the upcoming events that they host, showing that they care about enriching the local community. The service here was amazing, with Rose being so welcoming and excited to explain their ice cream to us. We ended up each ordering a scoop of ice cream (I think I got the Selena Gomez Oreo/Horchata flavor, which was limited edition). As some of the other reviewers mentioned, it was kind of hard to pick which flavor to get after sampling so many good ones, but I would definitely recommend the horchata flavor and if I'm passing by or having dinner in the area I would probably stop by and see if they have any new seasonal flavors to try. read more

I must say location wise it's off the beaten path of the hustle and bustle of San Mateo downtown and they may get overlooked as a place to go. The cafe is spacious with a separate seating area- large enough for groups. The girls working the counter were helpful and one of them introduced us to their menu. It's great to know they offer non-dairy ice cream made with coconut milk. We tried the Ube - first few spoonfuls were delicious but our tongues/mouth were pretty purple and the ice cream was very sweet so I had to stop. I think a kids scoop would have satisfied me enough. The ice cream is undoubtedly delicious, and I'm so glad there's an ice cream place in San Mateo now! They talk about how their ice cream is premium/denser/less air, but tbh it doesn't taste denser or richer than standard ice cream. I'm grateful they give samples, but they're truly the smallest samples I've ever had (like a mm of ice cream on a small spoon), so it's hard to get the taste. And my recent scoop from them wasn't fully packed, there was an air gap in the middle where the scooper hadn't pressed it down enough, which I only mind because the scoops were already so small for the price. read more

I read one other review and knew I had to visit. The staff are amazing. The toasted coconut ice cream is like if coconut cake were condensed into an airless mass of frozen perfection.
