Food was bland, just soya sauce and lots of red food color. Still had to wait an additional 20 mins even though there was no line or wait.

    | Deeply Disappointed -- What Happened to Baithakh?…read more Baithakh used to be one of our favorite go-to spots in North Brunswick. We've always enjoyed the food, but unfortunately, something has definitely changed since our last visit -- and not for the better. We ordered several dishes, including the Baithakh Seekh Kebab Roll, Crispy Fried Chicken Burger, Beef Paya, Beef Nihari, Peshawari Mutton Karahi, and Chicken Malai Boti. To our surprise, nearly everything was a letdown. The Beef Paya and Peshawari Mutton Karahi were both swimming in oil and severely lacked flavor, which was shocking considering how good they used to be. The Fried Chicken Burger had decent seasoning, but the chicken itself was tough and rubbery -- almost inedible. The Chicken Malai Boti was okay, but even that wasn't as tender or flavorful as we've had here before. Maybe they've changed chefs or recipes, but the quality just isn't the same anymore. Baithakh had never failed us before, but this visit was a major disappointment. Sadly, we're giving it a 2 out of 5 stars. We hope they find their way back to the standard that once made them great.

The service was friendly, and the food came out extremely quickly. I felt we were being rushed just a tad, but not a huge deal. For appetizers, the falafel ($7?), Mantu ($8?), and bholani cadu ($6?) were ordered. Regarding the falafel, there were five to an order. The falafel was very crispy and had decent flavor. I thought they needed a little more seasoning present. The Mantu were Afghan style dumplings filled with ground beef, onions, and seasonings. It was garnished with homemade mint yogurt and lentil sauce. This was light and soft with tons of flavor. The dumplings were filled appropriately, and the lentil sauce was a pleasant addition. The bholani cadu was a thin fried pastry filled with butternut squash and seasoned with fresh herbs and spices. This was interesting. The wonton was very crispy. The squash filling was sweeter than I thought, but still tasty. I also might add all of the three sauces provided at the tables were good, with the cilantro one being my favorite (cilantro I believe anyway). For my entrée, I had the lamb shank ($38?). It came with a soup, salad, a choice of rice, and naan. The soup appeared to be a lentil soup. It came out hot and was very pleasant. The salad consisted of tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. It was prepared nicely as all the pieces were small and a good size portion. The simple dressing was great too. The lamb shank came with a few vegetables. The lamb was extremely tender, but not much meat was on the bone. There needed to be a little more seasoning too as it was lacking. I am just glad the lamb was so tender. I went with the Kabuli rice which had steamed carrots and raisins on top. This was fluffy and flavorful with a ton of it. The naan was okay, a little too crispy. I also tried the lamb chops. They had an unreal cook on them and seasoned well. I also tried the zamarud rice, which was good too. For dessert, the rice pudding ($8?) was ordered. It was creamy and filling. The nice crunch from the pistachios on top was a good addition. Will I go back? I would, yes.

For the price and flavor it was so worth it. I got two meals out of mine. I got the gyro platter and it probably was one of the tastiest meals I've had in a long time. I thought the chicken was seasoned and flavorful. But by far, the best part was the white sauce. I would pair it with the mango lassi and it was such a great explosion of flavors - both savory and sweet. I will say they ask whether you're okay with onions and raisins in your platter. I liked them but I know raisins might not be what most people prefer to add to their rice. Service was fast. You can either order at the front table or at your seat. They got the food in a reasonable amount of time. The place looks small from the outside, but when you walk in, there's a back room worth of 30 people worth of seating. It's extremely cozy inside. There's also a parking lot right next to the restaurant and also across the street. The lot right next door is kinda small though, so you might need to loop around. Parking shouldn't be a problem and you can get a really good stop if you're lucky.

BUT, imho Adel's doesn't really taste as good as the original Halal Guys in terms of flavor and fragrance. The chicken from Adel's is in bigger chunks and some argue is more tender, but the flavor is definitely not close. Also, it's important that it comes with lettuce, tomatoes and a little onion to balance everything out. Finally, You must get both the spicy red and white sauce together to make it all come together! The Ugly: The smell is addictive, so if you walk by, it's hard to resist, even if you've just eaten a nice meal somewhere else. We couldn't resist. Gotta hit the gym hard for the next few days!

And that line is no joke. You will wait. Plan accordingly. Here's my dilemma: every single time I eat here, my stomach lets me know about it later. Without fail. I've tried adjusting the hot sauce, going easy on portions... doesn't matter. Something about this food and my digestive system just don't agree. At this point I have to accept that it's probably not for me. So why do I keep coming back? Because at 2 AM after a late night, when everything else is closed and you're starving in Times Square, that platter of chicken and rice over white sauce smells like salvation. They're the only game in town at that hour, and honestly, in the moment, it hits. It's the next morning I regret it. If your stomach handles it better than mine, you'll probably love it. The food is tasty and the portions are huge for the price. I just wish I could enjoy it without paying for it twice.
