OK, I MUST get on my blowhorn here about this great dim sum gem. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I seriously do not know how this restaurant is not crowded on weekends, but it absolutely DESERVES TO BE.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]When you look up "underrated" and "under the radar" in the dictionary, a picture of China Chef should be plastered front and center because this is a hidden gem of a dim sum restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Finding good dim sum in Northern NJ is as difficult as finding a needle in a stack of needles. It's almost impossible. There are a few dim sum restaurants in the area, but I can count each and every one of them on my hand. In Central NJ, there are a few more options, but that's the length of the list. It's quite a sad state of dim sum restaurants or lack thereof in NJ. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I found China Chef on Yelp, I was as skeptical as many of the other reviewers. It was the same recurring theme - outdated, not busy, mom and pop ownership.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When most people see "not busy", they move on. However, when I read a bit more, I saw that some customers said the food taste better than the place looks and it was actually very good. ENOUGH SAID, we were definitely going to give them a shot. We dropped in a quiet, drizzly, unassuming Saturday morning at 11am sharp, when they opened for business. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As some past reviews said, the restaurant was indeed a bit drab and outdated. From the decor, this was not going to be mistaken for a Michelin star dim sum establishment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However, I was undeterred from the shabby internal dwellings and marched forward. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were quickly seated in the modest dining area and we were off to the races...[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We had our dim sum marker card on the table, but where were the carts? About 5 minutes after we situated ourselves - VIOLA - the ONE and ONLY cart made its long-awaited appearance. The cart actually circled around the restaurant to our table and we were served first! The woman manning the cart actually told some customers that we were first, hence why we got first dibs - sweeeeeeet. I had never seen a single cart system before used in a dim sum restaurant, but it ABSOLUTELY worked here. The single cart had a hodgepodge of dim sum favorites and, if they didn't have it on hand at that moment, they could easily make to order for you in the back. They...had...absolutely...everything! You would have never expected that this mom and pop operation had most, if not all, of the common dim sum dishes, but they did: Beef rice noodle rolls, shrimp rice noodle rolls, cruller stuffed rice noodle rolls, shrimp dumplings (har gow), pork dumplings (siu mai), chive/leek dumplings, black bean sauce chicken feet, sticky rice in lotus leaf, steamed beef meatballs, deep fried shrimp balls, shrimp stuffed eggplant, egg tarts and, even, coconut pudding/jell-o! There was actually even more that we didn't order. In addition, they had kitchen items that you could order as well, like, pan fried noodles, chow funs, rice dishes. OK, so it's great that they had such great variety, but how was the flavor of the food? EXCELLENT. In all honesty, everything was authentically delicious. I couldn't have been more satisfied with how good everything tasted. I wouldn't say my expectations were low, but the variety and taste of everything surprised me. I thought it was going to be OK, but it blew me away. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Sadly, at the height of our meal, there were only about 6-7 tables occupied and many, many more that were not.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The restaurant seemed to be clearly run by an elderly couple - both of whom took turns pushing the cart and cleaning the tables. There was literally no one else working the dining area. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love when I find quiet, hidden gems because I can always go back to it without it being crowded like a Friday night at the club, but this establishment deserves more business[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - the woman manning the cart was so friendly to us and asked us where we were from. She also kept thanking us back for the business when we thanked her (in Cantonese) for the dishes. And, of course, the dim sum - amazingly authentic and as good as it gets anywhere. I rounded up but I think this place deserves more kudos than it gets. We came here for dim sum first thing when they opened on a weekend. I was not disappointed at any of the items. Everything was so fresh!!! Again, we were the only ones so there was no wait whenever we ordered something. The Pork Pastry Pie was To Die For. My fiance and I were skeptical to come here given the 3 stars, but we were really craving dim sum so we ended up going! The shrimp noodles were my favorite, those are made to order, really delicious and hot. Would not order again tho WINTER MELON SOUP - totally gross. Just diced up tiny cubes of wintermelon, still crunchy cuz not cooked all the way. And little chunks of clams/scallop??? Not sure. Don't fools around with decor or social media. This place it's worth for real foodies. I stopped by because my Chinese friends recommended it's tasty and Yes finally I tried there dishes. All I ordered was taste amazing and felt like dim sum made by order. Usually I always ask for more vinegar or sauce for dipping but nope. All dumplings yummy and Peking Pork Plum it's was fantastic. This was the closest Chinese spot to where we were staying. I read the reviews and looked at pictures and it seemed pretty split down the middle but I decided to try. We placed an order to go for the pork in garlic sauce and the orange chicken. We got the house lo mein, and my fiancé got a couple other things. He walked in to pick it up and asked for hot chili oil. The man acted very annoyed that he asked but walked away to get some. He came back with 4 in his hand and only gives my fiancé 1. So my fiancé asked for another (for me) and the man said "no. Only 1." WHAT. You're a Chinese food restaurant and we can't have hot oil? I have to say that China Chef is a pretty solid Chinese restaurant. I've been coming here for many years and every time that I've been here the food has been fresh and delicious. Is the wait staff a little slow, yes! But that's the only negative thing you can say about this place because the food is solid. I come here with my family maybe every other month just to have the Dim Sum and we always enjoy it. And if we're not having dim sum we're ordering entrées such as chicken and broccoli, house fried rice and the house Mei-fun. All of which are delicious and well proportioned. Honestly I think this is probably the most decent Chinese restaurant that I've been to in all of Hudson County and I will keep coming back here time after time. Your average Chinese restaurant - nothing bad, but nothing spectacular. We had the shrimp&broccoli, lobster, and a beef dish. The beef needed to be cut into slices, as they came in huge chunks that took forever to chew. The shrimp was slightly overcooked, but otherwise tasted fine (I particularly liked the broccoli in this dish though - it had a slight roasted flavor that I enjoyed). The lobster was also good, but I tended to get one small piece of shell in each bite I took. We ended with a complementary jello-like dessert. Service ranged (some servers were mildly rude and others very courteous). I was also interested to see that all the non-Asian tables got a bowl of chips to start - being Chinese, we got no such thing. China Chef is the go-to sitdown (and take-out) Chinese restaurant in Secaucus. Although I have not been here for dim sum, my family comes here to dine and we absolutely love that the tables have lazy susans because we can all share and try a bit of everything. The food here is great. To me a sit-down Chinese restaurant is a gem, there really aren't a lot of them around here. So when there's a good one, you make it your go-to restaurant. We love it here. They have a full bar and make some mean zombies (if you ask my mom and aunt!). Good place for Dim Sum. The food is good - they have everything I like - shrimp dumpling, pork rib, beef rib, etc. There are about 15 types of dim sum, and about 5-6 types of dessert. Not too many for a big group of people who want to try different dishes, but enough for us. The price is reasonable - about $4-5 per dish on average. There is a parking lot, and good for people on Hundson county, so we don't need to drive so long to have dim sum. One more thing, if you like Durian, must try their Durian dessert. It's really good! The food here is pretty decent...they have all the traditional selections but offer a fried shrimp ball, which I have not seen else where and it is quite delicious! The seasonings and flavors were very good and we all really enjoyed our meal. The fried items where a little cold/dense but that may be kitchen choice...regardless, we enjoyed our taro filling fried nest things and turnip cakes. There was a lack of carts, but that may just because we went quite early in the morning and/or it's not a huge space and seems like they are still working out some kinks. The service is awful, BUT that is pretty on par with any solid Chinese restaurant lol. If you have ever dined in China, most restaurants could care less about the service and it really is all about the food. China Chef wasn't our first choice, but I noticed a few of the newer places around don't serve alcohol. This place does with a full bar & those speciality drinks that you'll find at the older Chinese restaurants. The decor of this place is a little dated. Reminds me of an 80's kind of restaurant. After a round of Mai Tai's(strong & sweet), we ordered our 3 apps they were... Dim Sum, the boneless honey ribs & steamed vegetable dumplings. All were polished off rather quickly & I noticed something . The staff is quite efficient. That being after each course they clear our table and we got new plates and silverware. With an extensive menu to look at we eventually settled on 3 different entrees. Chicken, beef and seafood dishes were ordered. Old reliable for me the General Tso's chicken with portions that are very generous to say the least. I am happy that I found a dimsum place that is not in the city. China Chef is only about a 15 minute drive from Jersey City which makes it very ideal on the days that I do not want to commute into NYC. China Chef offers your typical dimsum experience with carts being pushed around with an assortment of offerings. My group went with the ha gow, shu mai, tripe, buns, egg noodles, and chicken feet. All the dishes tasted okay, nothing compared to a lot of the places in the city but it hit the spot. The only dish I disliked was the chicken feet. It felt way to overcooked and had a mushy texture. The pricing is relatively cheap, our meal for 3 only came out to $45! The staff here were also very friendly and attentive. I must say that they are better than most dimsum places I have been to when it comes to service. I only ever come here on weekends for their dim sum. In the past 10 years or so the lunch time crowd has gotten smaller and smaller. It will never be as packed as the old days where you couldnt even find parking in the parking lot. This is my go to restaurant for dim sum and we always get the same thing, every time, without fail. Honorable mentions are their: chicken feet, fried shrimp ball, cream custard bun, pork shu mai, shrimp shu mai, some mix of mushroom and pork wrapped with tofu skin (forgot the English name but that's my fav and no other dim sum place I've been to in the states or overseas have matched that). Then will usually finish off with a noodle dish. Some weekends are better than others. For example, sometimes they don't have too many carts running or the particular food I want hasn't been made and it takes nearly 20 mins to come out, but on average I'm usually happy with the service here. I'm a regular so I know most of the servers. Sometimes They may come across as cold but they are really kind and nice people at heart. The father/son duo there is nice and the guy who calculates the check (I wish I was a human calculator!) at the end always grabs the teapot when we indicate we're running low. Also I hate cold, room temperature, dim sum and I had plenty of that at other places and over here it's warm/hot especially if it's just made. They use the carts during the weekends and I believe they're made fresh in the back. It's def great to have this option close to home instead of trying to haul your @$$ to NYC chinatown and struggle to find parking only to sit at a crowded restaurant for some Dim Sum. Plus, the prices are really good so you're not paying an arm and a leg. There's always plenty of parking here, no wait for food, and it's not crowded. Some of my favs include (I'll say it in english) shrimp dumplings, shu mai, fried shrimp balls, shrimp in peppers, black bean spare ribs, chicken feet, turnip cake, long rice skin w/shrimp or beef and this pork/mushroom thing wrapped in bean curd, yum! I have to say the quality of the dim sum here is poor. We were one of the first to arrive on Sunday morning, so my guess is that they served us some leftovers or items they found in the back of the freezer. Or perhaps, this is what they serve regularly? Some of the dishes were carried out on a serving tray and were cold/room temperature. These included: - Shrimp wrapped in the flat noodle - I expected this to be in the tin steamer, but instead was on a plate with a cover. Regardless, the noodle was over-cooked and the shrimp still had the veins. - Turnip cake - the consistency was too gelatinous and the exterior had no crisp. As for the items in the tin steamers: - The vegetable dumplings were also over-cooked so the skin was mushy, making it difficult to eat. - The shrimp/pork shumai was salty and unfortunately for me I had one with a piece of bone that looked like a chicken's nail. Lost my appetite after that discovery. (I can tolerate tiny pieces of cartilage but not chicken nails.) There were numerous waiters scurrying about making the atmosphere seem chaotic. A waiter hovered by our table at one point, another tried to push a plastic fork and knife. Chopsticks are fine, thanks. I suppose this is their way of being helpful, but their approach is all wrong. So I come here often but this time around I'm giving them a 2 due to SERVICE! When you come for dim sum, the food just flows and I most of the time hardly ever wait for food. Well guess it was a bad day for us to walk in here because the service was just that bad. Got your typical shrimp shumai, short ribs and veg/shrimp dumplings.....now mind you amongst my husband and I we can demolish those small dishes in like 5-10min. We wanted more food so we waited and waited and waited. We didn't get food for literally 20-25 minutes and that's bad when you're there for DIM SUM. My kids were starving and we finally got our food but the waiting game was not making me happy. The food thank goodness was good but that service.....ugh....no apologies from the staff as they saw us dwindling our thumbs waiting for them. The place stops serving dim sum at 3p and we got there at 1:30p. I was so upset they ran out of sesame balls but I did have my favorite which is the turnip cakes. If someone pulls my arm to come again I kno I would, but I will be hoping for better service. read more

Just came here for Dim sum. They said Dim Sum only serves on Weekends. We had 7 dishes: Shiu Mai, Shrimp Dumpling, Black Bean Pork Ribs, and Chicken Feet, Beef Tripe, Pork Buns, and Fried Shimp balls. The total was $27. It is a very great price even comparing to dim sum in China town at New York. So it is around $4.50 for L dishes, and $3.25 for S dishes. Depends on what kind of dim sum you order. Food is very good. Wait staff is good but not extra friendly . I had sesame chicken. It was crisp on the outside and the chicken was very tender. The broccoli was crisp and tender. Drinks were very strong. I had a zombie and one was enough. I have been there many times but moved to Florida 2 years ago. When I walked in the bartender said ..."one zombie coming up" ! I was really impressed because I hadn't been there in two years and he still remembered me! read more

I ordered large crabmeat fried rice and all they put are scrambled eggs, peas, lots of onions and maybe 5 pieces of tasteless crabmeat. If you will charge your customers for almost $20 for large portion, we are expecting to see more than 5 pieces of crabmeat. It's terrible. It's unbelievable. Well, SEAK in Edgewater, when you order crabmeat fried rice for $25 your fried rice is oozing with crabmeat and they are delicious. read more
