This is my go-to Chinese spot in town. I have ordered takeout here numerous times and have dined in the restaurant as well. My favorite things to order are the lo mein noodles and boneless ribs. I love how chewy and flavorful the noodles are they always taste fresh. Another recommendation is their soups - I love their chicken noodle soup and even though its served in a little bowl, it's made really well and a great way to start a meal. I have never had any issues with service when I have dined in - I've eaten in the restaurant side and at the bar. The drinks are super cheap and not shy on the liquor. The are also very quick when getting your takeout order ready and they have very cheap combination platters (around $6 and it comes with your choice of fried or white rice). Not so many places for dim sum in NJ. Dim sum is the best thing here. Hot and delicious. Free parking. Service is not is much. I would give them 4 stars if they have an improved service. One time on the very busy lunch, I asked for the sauce to eat with my dim sum, the server said "later later I'm very busy here." I don't expect perfect service like a five star hotel. But their service sometimes is fine and sometimes is too much with attitude. If you can just ignore of their service. Come for their food. read more

This place doesn't have as many dim sum carts going around as other places, in fact we were seated in the corner and they actually didn't even want to come to us. We ordered a few dim sum dishes including radish cake, shrimp dumplings, egg tarts and they were all very yummy. The radish cakes were one of the best ones I've had. We also ordered beef pan fried noddle and the satay beef casseroles and both were fresh and delicious. China Chef is not your neighborhood Chinese store with the bulletproof glass. Decor wise, the place has an old school vibe and a dining room that probably seats close to 80 people. They serve quality Chinese food in huge family style portions, which makes this an ideal large group hangout. I've never done dim sum on the weekends, but I've heard it's excellent. Note this is a review of when Dim Sum is served on carts during the weekends and holidays (11am - 3pm). Since going to China Town is not a frequent occurrence for me, China Chef does a good job of serving Dim Sum when I do not want to drive very far. I'm assuming since you are reading this review you know the concept of Dim Sum. This restaurant has the usual selection of food on carts (a variety of shiu mais, dumplings, beef/fish/shrimp balls, buns, etc.). As a tip, order your drinks right when your tea is placed on the table, the restaurant is usually busy during Dim Sum and to be honest, do not except the best service when Dim Sum is being served. Most of the time you will need to flag someone down for drink refills and orders on the regular menu. However, they are good with bringing each cart to you once seated, so I would suggest getting the food you want then. Also, the food on the normal menu is good, the fried calamari is alright (I'm biased to the Italian style calamari) and the pan fried noodles are delicious and well-prepared. They also have lobsters, crabs, and a variety of fish on the menu you can order. Sometimes they will have someone walking around with uncommon dishes, so just be attentive so you can get this food without waiting to order it. My mother would also get the snails here, which are good as well. Finally, their egg custard is good to have at the end of your meal. As for the restaurant layout, it is small and can be a little cramped when it is busy. The layout is not ideal for Dim Sum cart service, which is a reason why you may see the carts not coming around you as much, since they are catering everyone, which is why I mentioned before about getting all the food you want on during the first trip. Even though this place is busy, I have usually been able to get a seat once I come in. So unless there is a special occasion going on, you should be able to sit immediately. read more

If there was a button for 0 stars, I would give it a 0! I will NEVER step foot in this place again!!!!!!!!!!! I ordered pepper steak with white rice and an eggroll. First of all, the food was swimming in oil and the egg roll was not edible because of all the oil that was dripping out of it. Secondly, the pepper steak was disgusting! I took a bite of the pepper and when I realized it had a funky taste I spit it out and noticed it was all moldy. As I looked at the other peppers in the dish, they too were full of mold. When I showed the hostess, she argued with me saying that the pepper was fine and there was nothing wrong with the dish. Obviously , I could not eat it. I was so turned off that I wanted to leave. After arguing some more, I still had to pay for a moldy meal! When I told her I would never step foot in there again she told me she didn't care because she had plenty of other customers..... Really?!? If the food isnt bad enough, the restaurant is also pretty dirty looking and outdated. I am afraid to see what the kitchen looks like. My family has been coming here for years to a point we're buddy buddy with the owner. We get pretty decent service for the 15-20 heads they have to serve. During weekend lunch or brunch time they do dim sum which isn't too bad. Overall the food is a bit too greasy and oily but it still tastes pretty good. My favorite entree dish is the fried flounder. It has a good amount of crunch on the skin and soft and silkiness of flounder meat drenched in soy sauce. Second favorite is the yeung chow fried rice. It's a classic but serves a hefty portion. The dim sum favorites are the pork shumai, fried shrimp ball and steamed shrimp balls. They are all really oily but I don't mind it. They used to give ice cream with fortune cookies on top of it but last time I came here they gave out slices of orange instead. The decor could be more updated because its starting to look like its on its last breath. I pretty much come here with my family because I'm not the one paying for it. If it wasn't for the dim sum and the numerous times I've been here with my family I probably would have rated it lower. read more

The food was good. We were so sure we were going to come back to this place, until this happened. So this was our first visit to the restaurant. 3 people serves us. One nice lady took our order, a second guy brought us our food and the third OLD guy brought us out check. We gave him a $2 tip which he refused to take and told us the tip was 15% of the total bill which was included in the bill. We payed off and left. To our surprise, he came running after us, yelling at the top of his voice " YOU DID NOT GIVE ME TIP" " WRITE THE TIP". Disappointed at the dimsum selection here. They don't have congee. At one point, one of the waiters brought out a tray of steamers, yelling "shumai! shumai!" and there were no covers on the steamers. It was so off-putting and unhygienic I had no appetite after seeing that. The service was not the best, the waiters were actually arguing and cursing in Cantonese at each other, and was kind of disruptive. They pushed over the cart of steamers, but we got no response when we asked what they have. We had to ask specifically if they had hargao and shumai before we actually got them. Maybe they thought it was bright enough from natural light through the windows, and decided to leave the lights off. My family went here many times over the years. We used to love the seafood pan fried noodles and the Hong Kong style chicken. During our last two visits, we noticed the quality of the food went down. They gave us smaller portions and the food wasn't as good. The staff was always inattentive - forgetting to bring us our drinks and charging us for them, taking forever for little requests like more soy sauce or extra tableware - but it was something we could overlook because of the good food. My boyfriend loves dim sum, so I went here just to shut him up for a while. Thank goodness he is Chinese or I would have felt completely misplaced, the people that work here are NOT friendly. When we first got seated nobody asked us what we wanted to drink, we just sat there for around 5-10 minutes. Another table of 6 got seated across the restaurant from us and was served with drinks and food RIGHT AWAY. Finally the person with the cart made their way over to us, didn't say a word. All he did was look at us and then the cart. My boyfriend started talking to him in Chinese, so then he became a bit more friendly and conversational. One person that worked there did notice I was struggling with chop sticks and brought me a fork, which was kind and greatly appreciated! There was also one nice lady bringing around food, but those were the only two nice people that worked there. The food was pretty good, the sesame balls were really yummy. I'm a vegetarian so I stuck with the veggie dumplings, both fried and steamed. Going on the weekend is a must for the dim sum lunch. The dim sum is always warm and fresh. For dessert that have coconut jello which is to die for! I frequent this place often and love the pan fried noodles - when you order to-go they package everything separately so that the noodles don't get soggy. Before we start any of this review I have to mention the huge elephant in the room this place is overpriced. OK back to the review I went to China Chef with a really great friend who is of Cantonese origin he confirmed that the meal was very authentic which I thought in my very Americanized mindset. The overall ambience average and cleanliness of the place meh and the was food good, the service is what it is. I went in with minimal expectations in terms of attentiveness and overall service based on reviews - it was a little bit better than where I had set the bar. We enjoyed steam dumplings, pork buns spareribs, Shumai shrimp rolls and a few other items. Our server was relatively nice HOWEVER the only issue is that he misunderstood the fried rice order and instead of one order he brought us two at $12 a pop! that's an issue. I possibly could understood if I ordered the item - a potential for a language barrier however my dining companion ordered and spoke in Cantonese but that's neither here nor there. Another important point to mention is that the staff is very fluent in the English language - awesome! Guests where majority of Chinese/Asian origin but the Parton make up was still diverse - age, ethnic, racial etc. this made the experience even more pleasant. I would definitely do it again while it is disgustingly overpriced (especially with that extra fried rice)...if I factor in what we would have paid for parking and toll to go into Chinatown NYC this isn't so bad. I will not post a review here that doesn't talk about China Chef's dim sum! ^_^ We had the salted fish and chicken fried rice which was strong in flavor due to the fish. It was really good, though. The diced chicken thighs were tender and not overdone. This rice was white, not needing the usual dose of soy sauce because ofbthe salty flavor of the crumbled fish which was throughout this dish. We also got the China Chef Casserole, which was served in a miniature pot. It had glass noodles, a fantastic broth, straw mushrooms, carrot, and a mixture of fish. Very good. The service was meh. One fellow was working his tail off, while the other two were busy doing nothing but socializing. Strange. This was better than we thought it would be, but due to the lack of more traditional Chinese fare, we may skip this place...maybe we'll stop for dim sum? We'll see. read more

Best non-takeout General Tso's Chicken in town, crispy, spicy, hot, not mushy, not watery, not chewy...I hate GTC like that!! So I like this place a lot! Love how the give you the crispy noodles and duck sauce as soon as you're seated. Service seems like they speak limited English but they've always been extremely polite and NEVER got my order wrong over the years of coming here...My wife enjoys this restaurant as well. Would give 5 stars but the takeout and delivery is much different than eating there, definitely not nearly as good. Also don't like looking at the fish tank when I'm eating...it kinda grosses me out :) But now I'm just being picky! We are going here for Christmas this year, they are open! I'm not sure why this place only has 3 stars. I love this place. I've come here a few times now for dim sum. It's one of the best and only places I've eaten true dim sum near north NJ. We tried a wide selection, and all if it was good. They bring us hot sauce. My favorite dishes are shrimp dumplings, pork shumi, sticky rice with Chinese sausage in Lotus leaf, and hot and sour soup. I can tell that I like their food because when I try the hot and sour soup, it's not like another Chinese restaurant. It's not overally salty, and they add hot peppers to it. It was delicious. Dim Sum is the best i've tried so far, even comparing to a few places in chinatown, but i must still search for more in chinatown. Their food selection is good, and they can make authentic chinese dishes as well as the americanized chinese food. I prefer the authentic stuff. Decor is dated but they try to keep the place tidy and painted. My family have been customers for the past 20 years and are still satisfied to this day, it also helps that you're chinese!
