I've been to a couple of Jose Andres' other restaurants - Zatinya and Jaleo - so I was excited when a friend suggested this place for her birthday dinner. The 9 of us were seated on a large table near the entrance of the restaurant, and I was immediately impressed by the trendy decor. Even the bathrooms, with chalk messages written all over the walls, made me feel like I was in Brooklyn. Our friendly waitress suggested some cocktails to start off, but over half the table (including myself) ended up getting the Cholotini - we were all sold by the passion fruit element of the drink. I must say that the Cholotini was one of the best cocktails I've had. It was refreshingly tart and not overly sweet! My side of the table decided to split a few dishes to share since we wanted to try as many of the small dishes as possible. We ordered the Concha Siu Mai, the Kam Lu WanTan (both from the Dim Sum section of the menu), the Unagi roll and the Aeropuerto fried rice. Both Dim Sum dishes were absolutely delicious, and came with six pieces each. The Unagi roll had an interesting texture with the Okinawan sweet potato, but the sweetness balanced the Unagi nicely. The Aeropuerto fried rice had an understated flavor, yet the crunchiness from the veggies and crisp sweet potato topping added a nice touch. After these four dishes, we were still hungry, so we ordered the Concolon after we spotted it being prepared for a nearby table. This was by far the best dish of the night - not to mention that it was prepared in front of us and was a HUGE portion. The crispy fried rice pot was topped with a flavorful and creamy broth, the pork belly melted in my mouth, and the entire dish was perfectly balanced with plump shiitake mushrooms, bok choy, daikon, egg and sausage (even more meat!). By the end of the meal, we were all completely stuffed! I definitely recommend China Chilcano (now my favorite Jose Andres restaurant) for an amazing dining experience! read more

Wonderful addition to the ever-growing list A-list restaurants in DC. Residing in the penn quarter area of chiantown China Chilcano is an interesting concept blending in unique flavors of Peruvian, Asian and Latin fusions. SCENE: Post National's victory dinner with close friends! First off, the cocktails...on par with most comparable restaurants. My judgement is solely based on their pisco sour and old fashioned. The pisco sour was on par but where Chilcano really shined was with their 5 spice old fashioned which was fantastic!! Drop by for an after-work libation I don't think you'll be disappointed. Secondly, the scene was appropriately modern. Almost looked like a snazzier Nandos. Lastly, the food, I'm going to give this a solid "I LIKE IT" rating. I can't say that I had anything that blew my mind but their tapas were enjoyable and satisfying. Since this is fusion, the menu offers sushi, Peruvian chicken stews, dim sum, and lettuce wraps. For 6 of us, we shared and sampled about 12 different plates. The portion sizes aren't HUGE so you'll need to order about 2-3 items per person. Of the items that we tried I was big fan of the lettuce wraps and the chicken stew. The dumplings were all unique and very tasty as well. Avoid the sushi, nothing mind blowing there. Casual atmosphere with a fun menu and exciting drink selection based on pisco. Tuna ceviche, pork belly bun and the pisco sour were a hit. This is a great place to go when you're not that hungry. The stellar achievement flavors is only thwarted by it's small portion size. If you're a Latin American like I am, the ceviche is about 25% the regular portion we'd get back home. The quality and the flavor though are phenomenal. My friends and I waited 25 minutes past our reservation time slot to be seated, but when we actually did, the hostess sent over complimentary plantain chips with their signature sauce. We ordered 4 types of dumpling - lamb, Hakao, veggie, and Dorado. All were great and very unique. Dorado is not for one who dislikes runny eggs, so take caution if you dont. I loved the California roll. No rice or seaweed and packed with flavor. The Aeropuerto was just OK, didn't taste much different from regular fried rice. The service was good, but I felt a bit rushed to clear my plate...no one was waiting at 8:30-9pm, so why? Overall, good experience. We're been wanting to try China Chilicano for a while. We're been to most of Jose's other restaurants in DC and really enjoy those so we were looking forward to this. We had a late 9:45 reservation and it was still packed when we arrived. The decor is very fun and modern. The atmosphere was very lively and loud. We could still hold a conversation at our table but probably not the place for a nice intimate date. The menu set up is fusion of Peruvian and Asian and small dishes meant for sharing. This is nice if you like to try different tastes and flavored. Our waiter was helpful with suggestions on what to get. We decided to take part in the restaurant week menu. They let you chose from a select menu with 3 categories and dessert. We tried the shrimp/pork dumplings, chicken skewers, dancing yucca fries, vegetable fried rice. Some of the portions we're different so it's hard to know which items to order (for example the yucca fries were huge but the dumplings were tiny and not very filling). Overall we enjoyed it but would want to come back and try the regular menu as well. read more

I love this place - Jose Andres' team has done it again! Had the Dancing Yucca - divine...crispy, salty and very fun to eat with the dancing bonito flakes! Also had a pork belly sandwich...delish! Great lunch - pretty pricey $4 soda (small bottle) brought the tab to $30 for lunch. They do have a $20 lunch menu, but didn't have the sandwich on it. Arriving at 9pm, there were several tables open but we were told they were set aside for a party. We grabbed two squished seats at the bar and sat with another party's dirty glasses in front of us. Eventually I moved the glasses to the prep station near us and waited for a bartender to say hello or at least make eye contact. Highly frustrated I excused myself to the very dirty restroom while my boyfriend ordered me a glass of brut. I returned to find a seemingly flat glass at my seat. My boyfriend asked if we could order the tasting menu for just one (rather than the whole party needing to order it like some establishments). Apparently that question resulted in me receiving the tasting menu, despite never placing the order. I learned it was 13 courses as the first three dishes arrived almost simultaneously. Then the dishes arrived in rapid fire succession. They were delicious small bites (two small dumplings, a soup spoon holding ceviche etc). When the entree dishes arrived the tasting portions disappeared. At one point I had 4 entrees in front of me. Full portions. It was overwhelming and disappointing to leave the majority of the food on the plate. I just had no room. The saving grace of the night was that the bartender eventually warmed up, offered us samples of various mixers and chatting in between making his 50th round of pisco sour. Though pricey, China Chilcano is one of DC's treasures, a perfect date night spot. This is a Jose Andreas restaurant, and it certainly lives up to that impression. The food is an interesting fusion representing the cuisine of second-generation Chinese-Peruvians and Japanese-Peruvians who have intermarried and let their cuisine similarly intermingle--and it's delicious. Come hungry and expect to spend a couple hours luxuriating in the uniquely delicious small plates and hot pots. The El Dorado dumplings (featuring poached quail eggs and gold foil on steamed shu mai) are my favorite, but I haven't been disappointed by any dish yet. The drinks are strong but good and the desserts are equally delicious and presented in curiously whimsical ways. Check it out. It's worth it. read more

The main thing that made me give stars to this restaurant is the food. Really unique fusion food that surprises your taste buds with every bite. However, not sure it was worth the very slow service. We had to wait an additional 35 minutes after our reservation. Additionally, we waited about 20 minutes between each small plate. Our second trip here was for dinner and was nowhere as good as our first visit for a late lunch. My friend's meal came out 20 minutes before mine (lomo saltado) and the meat was well done and the rice very under cooked. Our server didn't reappear until she brought my food (aeropuerto) which was as good as the first time thankfully. We were finally able to send his food back then. His remade meal came out another 10 minutes later and the meat was still over and the rice barely cooked enough. We won't be returning for a while until they get the kitchen back in shape. We came from out of town looking for a unique restaurant experience and were not disappointed! Very fine flavors, and a wonderful mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Latin flavors. Went there on Friday. The place looks cool, but we had to wait for half an hour to be seated though the reservation was made. Food was ok. What I really went there for was ceviche which was small and flavorless. The only good option among those I have tried that evening was the rice with pork belly and egg. Service was ok.
