I've been coming to this buffet for several years now. its always been clean, friendly an great food. I went other tonite, the first time in several months. I was quite surprised to see the condition of the place. it was dirty, booths were worn out and falling apart, bathrooms were very dirty, staff was unfriendly and seemed to be more concerned with texting and talking on their cell phones. the food?? the worst I have ever experienced. This Buffett is one of my favorites. The sushi bar is usually really good and the Mongolian grill is really tasty! This place is usually pretty busy but I've never waited longer than a couple minutes to be seated. It could be a cleaner but it's definitely not like gross, that's the only reason I took off a star. I'm gonna start off by saying that I always go to the Chili's 2 doors down whenever my husband and kids get their Chinese craving. There is a decent selection of food items, which is nice, but the taste is just ok. They have a "sushi bar" and a hibachi grill. They get very busy on Sunday afternoons so if you're wanting a leisurely meal, this isn't the place to go. I don't like going here for several reasons: there is little/no customer service (nothing like you'd undoubtedly find elsewhere) and if you go in a group they always put everyone on the same check which then leaves you spending 15 minutes sorting everyone's bill. Food was being prepared by the members of the wait staff in the public dining room. No sanitary precautions were made. After the wait staff would complete busing tables they went right back to preparing the food with out washing their hands. Drink refills were being prepared for customers while in the middle of busing tables and no sanitary measures were made. The glasses were refilled with ice without washing hands. read more

I've been here quite a few times, but I won't be going back anymore. I was finishing off my drink near the end of my meal, that's when I noticed in the cup at the bottom under the ice was a paper fortune from a fortune cookie that didn't get cleaned out from the previous use. I quickly got the attention of the table attendant, I showed her and she was very apologetic. Dirty. Poor service. Food looks old and pale. I made a plate and chose not to eat it, because the smell and appearance of the place started to make me feel nauseous. The wok looked promising, but I wasn't sure how to make a plate as there was no one around to cook or explain the process. I used to love this place. I'd eat here regularly with my friends growing up. The food has always been pretty good, but let me tell you about the horrible service... You're lucky to get your drinks refilled at the most. When I walked in today staff began to argue while yelling at eachother and actually walked off while escorting us to our table... once we were finally able to get someone's attention for our check, they stood there and watched us sign the receipt and write out the tip/total. If you only sign the receipt and don't write a tip/total, they will ask you to do so while watching over your shoulder. There have been instances where the people I was eating with did not tip, and they were then PROMPTED to tip. I've had another instance where a waitress didn't bring $10 worth of change. She tried to keep it as her tip. After being asked for the $10 she tried to bring back only 9.. if you do not tip them, they're extremely rude to you. If you say thank you they just walk off. The prices have gone up and the selection/food quality down. I could go on. One star it being generous. read more

After knowing of this place for years I avoided it because how good can Chinese buffet be? I have a benchmark location in mind as a childhood of what a 5 Star can be. This place gets 4 because of the volume of choices, that were higher quality than normal. Maybe because it was 6pm on a Sunday which was packed. To be seated with a party of 19 in 5 minutes and be eating 5 mins after that is fantastic, no matter what. Every dish I had (probably tried half of them) was as good as any single entree I've had at any Chinese joint. A knock against was it was 95 degrees out and probably 80-85 inside. The crab legs were filled swiftly and in bulk and seemed to never run out. Piles of shrimp trays of all sorts in every isle and format. The gals picking up plates were diligent and earned an extra tips on refill speeds. I have lunch here about 6 or 7 times a year, I work near Shawnee Mssn Med Ctr so it's not far. Here's the deal. Relatively tasty food and a big selection. The chicken wings alone salad or fruit would make a filling, artery clogging lunch, but I sample the entire buffet. IT'S NOT GOOD CHINESE FOOD but it's hot and has a lot of vegetables so at least with all those calories, your get your nutrients and fiber! If you put it together right at the Mongolian Grill (raw food you select yourself that is stir-fried on the flat top while you wait) you get fresh food, cooked piping hot to order. It starts out cold and raw and 3 minutes later it's ready for you and has never be picked over, stirred or breathed on by another customer. That's really not bad. I've been to every buffet like this in north central Johnson County. This is the second best (Joy Wok) at 119th in Leawood is the best. The little store front "restaurants" with counter service and the picture menus above the counter are usually barely passable (but they keep you from stuffing yourself). If you want Chinese food that you can honestly call "good" you gotta go to a real restaurant with table service like Bo Lings or Dragon Inn. China Garden is "food" not really Chinese food. First off, this Chinese Buffet is nearly walking distance from the movie theater (in the same shopping center) - so that alone warrants at least two or three stars for people looking for an easy "dinner and a movie" evening. This place is usually packed with people, which means their parking lot is usually full - but no worries, because there's a plethora of parking right across the way. Although the buffet is often crowded, my wife and I have never had to wait for a seat - the staff is very friendly, and they'll usually sit you right away. As far as the food itself, I'd have to say that China Garden's is the best compared to other buffets in the area. There's a wide selection of food - pretty much the usual Sino American fare you'd expect at a Chinese buffet, complete with mozzarella sticks and apple pie along with the more Asian themed food. The food always tastes fresh, not like it's been sitting in a chafing dish for hours, and they're usually quick about refreshing the supply when it's running low. They also have fresh sushi (you can see the guy making it right there) which tastes very good, and a Mongolian Grill that haven't tried yet but hear it's very good. Okay, now for the not-so-good parts. For one thing, I think they could stand to keep their restaurant a bit cleaner. The buffet area/cups/plates/etc are clean, mind you, I'm talking more about the floors and tables in the dining area. Nothing too crazy, but there have been a few times when my wife or I have sat down and had to kick away food left on the floor by previous diners and not swept up by the staff. Which leads me to my BIGGEST complaint, which is a shame because there's really nothing the owners can do about this problem. I would rate it 2.5 stars. But I wouldn't round up to 3 stars. My meal was $13.88 and with a $2 tip it rounded out at $15.88. Truly not a $15.88 experience. This place is full and its 8:30 on a Sat night. The buffet turned over fairly quickly but some dishes were old. The highlight of my meal was my Sprite and my fortune cookie at the end. I did like the green beans but how can you mess up a green bean? All the chicken dishes tasted about the same. The garlic shrimp was garlic with a hint of shrimp. After reading mixed reviews, my friend and I decided to still try this buffet because most buffets in the area are about the same rating. I am here to confirm that the food is lukewarm to cold but if you're willing to plunge all your food into the piping hot sweet and sour sauce, it kind of evens out. The server wrote our totals on a piece of paper and then charged us less than what it said and hounded us for the 23 cents she didn't put on our cards so I'm wondering what they do when people don't have the change to cover it.. Maybe wash the dishes? I'm not sure because I luckily had the change to cover it but I'm pretty sure it was still short compared to the price she told us at the beginning. The food is amazing! Hot and fresh. Only complaint is the service. My aunt can't have diet drinks at all. So she asked for a dr. pepper and i asked for a diet dr. pepper. When we got back to our seats apparently the one with the straw on top of the drink was diet and the other was regular. When she took a drink of hers, she easily became disgusted and went to the bathroom. I took a drink of mine and it tasted like it was mixed with both diet and regular. The service needs to be more considerate of the customers needs. As a previous server, we must tend to the customers needs at all times. read more

Very disappointed with this place! I used to love this buffet till my experience today! I came in to enjoy lunch with my friend and we checked online to see what time lunch was over and the website stated 3:30pm on weekdays. We come in and it says on the menu and everywhere that lunch is over at 3:00pm weekdays. I asked why there is 2 different times on what time lunch ends and the worker said because the website hasn't been updated in about a year or so. That is false advertisement and if I would of known it was 3:00pm we would of came in earlier. We came around 3:10pm and she still refused to give us the lunch price even though we showed he information on the website. That's not even all of it! We accepted to pay the dinner price but when we come in all the food is cold and looks old like the "LUNCH" buffet. They should of switched it out by now! Hadn't been in a long time. Went last night with my child for dinner. Most of the buffet consisted of chicken and fish dishes, only one beef dish. The food was cold straight from the buffet except for the sweet and sour sauce which was almost boiling hot. Pretty sure the steamed rice had been out all day as well as the fried rice. We had to wait to be seated even though there wasn't anyone else waiting. And worst of all. There was some guy cleaning out the fountain in the front WITH DISHES FROM THE KITCHEN! And he was also taking ceiling panels down right over the buffet tables! We left in a hurry and we will not be back. I was throughly disappointed and am actually having stomach issues today from the general's chicken that was actually hot. This is the best Chinese buffet I've eaten at on the Kansas side. Very large selection including a lot of Sushi choices and a grill (which I've never used so can't comment on it.) In addition to the large selection, which goes beyond the "standard" buffet choices, the food is above-average and it's almost always busy so the food doesn't sit forever on the buffet. And they do change some of the choices so it's not always the same every visit. Cost varies from a bit higher than most buffets to several dollars higher depending upon when you visit. (Prices are higher on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday buffet.) Given that it's basically the same food no matter when you visit, I'd go when it's cheaper. Service has almost always been good to excellent, and it's pretty attractive for a buffet. And being just a few months old helps the appearance. Bottom line, it's still a buffet, but it's about as good as a buffet gets in Kansas. read more

I have a family of eight. We went in two parties. My husband and I went with three of our children on a Friday and found the food-quality and quantity to be really good...so, we sent our other two children and a friend of theirs the following Monday. The service was horrid. The waitresses sat by them, wouldn't fill their beverage glasses and spoke in Chinese to each other, except when using the "N" word in front of our friend!!! When the children proceeded to get up to go pay 'at the counter', I must only imagine the waitresses thought they were trying to leave without paying the bill and proceeded to scream at them-and each other. Surprisingly, the wait staff wasn't as rude as I was expecting but I still had to wait for several minutes at the door before anyone acknowledged me and the waitress barely looked at us the entire time she helped us. All I have to say is that I am very disappointed. I have been here numerous time and recommended this place many times. But this last visit has been nothing but horrible. Ordered drinks and never got them, had to ask for them and never got a refill. Had to ask for my check. The manager came by and we tried to explain that we had poor service and he was very passive aggressive and just said that he didn't know and brushed it aside.
