Pathetic photo #1: hot & sour soup in a disposable coffee cup on my nightstand
    Meredith R.

What a fancy takeout dinner. (I'm being sarcastic.) With disposable plates and cutlery, our mini-meal was brought up a notch with a lovely Malbec in our hotel room. -- Hot and sour soup was chock full of mushrooms and tofu .... but the broth had an odd peppery taste. HOWEVER when I heated leftovers two days later, the flavor somehow improved and morphed into something sort of good! -- The house "special" lo mein was not particularly special. Where are the shrimp? Barely any pork or beef. Not much chicken. This is what we paid extra for?! As we waited, plenty of people picked up takeout orders. I guess China Gourmet is popular with locals. As we'll be moving to the area in a year's time, I'll be on a quest for a go-to establishment. I don't think it'll be China Gourmet II.

Quick and simple Chinese greasy spoon food. Comfort food for the holidays and odd hours, you can get a lot of standard American Chinese dishes here, and the restaurant is simple with mostly take out, only a few seats within. Portions were generous and in the same strip mall as the Publix.

General Tso's combination platter - comes with pork fried rice and a large veggie egg roll.

Not as good as other Chinese takeouts. For example. The general tsos chicken is dry. Wouldn't recommend it.

FIRST, we have some food allergies in our family, and the server and chef were VERY attentive to these needs. One of us had sushi which was a delight. The clear soup was some of the best we've ever tasted. We also thoroughly enjoyed the ginger dressing on our salads. The hibachi chicken that a few of us ordered was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. We are lovers of yum yum sauce, and it came out in a squirt bottle. That made us ALL happy! If you like something spicy, their homemade chili oil is absolutely AMAZING! One ordered teriyaki chicken and said it was the best ever! The restaurant is small, but we didn't wait long for a table. It is VERY clean. Our favorite part was the servers that made us feel like family. They were so attentive. We also recommend trying the delicious fried donuts. They were the perfect ending!

We dined at PJK this evening. As a family with some severe allergies, we have to advocate for…read moreourselves at every dining establishment. We know this, and are therefore VERY careful about what we consume. We also tell our server up front as well. So, as soon as we sat down to eat, I began explaining to the server that we have some odd allergies. I cannot eat anything with turmeric, shellfish or tree nuts. My daughter has a tree nut allergy. Our server was very attentive and wrote down all my allergies to confirm with the chef. He came back and told me almost every dish has oyster sauce, so my only option was sweet and sour chicken and plain, steamed white rice. I understand that when going to an Asian restaurant that I often have few options. I'm not complaining about not having more than one option though I hope in the future they figure out how to make some dishes without oyster sauce. I'm also aware that many dishes have tree nuts, and so no complaints that I only had the one option. Our meals came out, and I began to eat my sweet and sour chicken. I noticed immediately that it was a weird texture. And then the flavor hit--it was shrimp. I began to spit it out of my mouth and immediately grabbed Benadryl. Thankfully up to this point with my allergies, I've not had to use an epi pen. The Benadryl has worked, BUT....if you have allergies, you know that each additional exposure adds to your body's histamine response. I always start with Benadryl and then have epi pens on hand as well. We brought the issue to the attention of the server. He was very apologetic and brought me a new plate of what I actually ordered. The server then didn't come back to our table until we were almost finished. There wasn't a manager or a chef that came to check on me. My father in law had to ask for the meal to be taken off the bill. Then they brought out two orders of donut holes as a consolation. As he set them down, he said, "These are not for either of you, they have nuts." So all of this to say that this restaurant is NOT allergy friendly. The ambiance was fine--clean and nice decor. There are a lot of people with allergies. If you are running a restaurant, expect to have questions about different food ingredients, and by all means, pay attention to what you're cooking and sending out to the dining room. I'm just thankful the Benadryl seems to have worked, but it could have ended very differently. We will not be back.

When I complimented it, the young man said they made the noodles. "We've 7 to 8 people in the kitchen on weekends." Simple and clean decor. The yellowish Jasmine tea tins are neatly stacked on the shelf, soothingly. One pot of orchid - couldn't tell if it's real. The location is convenient, right off I-75. Wish they would add two wisps of leafy veggie to the beef chow fun, which is the norm, and better vinegar. 3% surcharge for credit cards. The server also said the location opened 3 years ago, and the one in Sarasota 7 years ago. "Yummy House is ours, managed by two sisters; King by brothers." One will soon open in Jacksonville: good luck 马到成功 -:) By the way, one of the chefs from their Sarasota location left to open their own shop, named Dim Sum Kitchen. No wonder they gave me a tight face when I unknowingly asked about the names: so similar and so close in spelling. Ok, heading down to the tennis - Miami Open. Today's sunshine may be the last we see, because the weather forecast calls for rainy days.
