This place was not good at all. It's Korean-owned and offers a few Korean dishes. I ordered the 3 item dinner combo of chicken teriyaki, steak teriyaki and sashimi. The steak teriyaki was terrible. It was frozen beef. The outside tasted like jerky, but when I bit into it, it was raw. Like deep maroon red raw. So I asked them to take it back and to substitute the beef for salmon teriyaki instead. They said they could not do it and they would just cook the beef some more. IT ALREADY TASTES LIKE JERKY, cooking it more will not make it better. I then asked to cancel the dish entirely and they finally decided to cave in (probably because they didn't want to remove a $13 meal from our check). They gave us the baked mussel, pretending to make up for it (but now I realize they were going to give it to us anyway after reading other reviews. Plus, the waitress already had it on her tray while I was complaining about my beef). The baked mussel, like someone else mentioned was kind of nasty. Mushy, and it fell apart when we picked it up because they cut it up into thirds. BF was at first digusted by it, thinking they was bad mussels. The salmon was better, but I was very unhappy about the way they handled the problem. First they served me bad, frozen beef dish and then they were being cheap about the situation. read more

Okay, so I should start with the disclaimer that my wife and I moved from Southeastern PA to Orange County, and we have very high standards for sushi, having dined at some really, really good sushi restaurants back East. We thought the sushi would be comparable or much better in SoCal, but so far, that has not been the case, at least going by Yelp rec's. Sushi Imari was no exception. We ordered takeout from Sushi Imari, and the service was great. When we arrived around 9 pm on a Friday, there were still people waiting to be seated...a really good sign. The salmon and tuna nagiri were very good, and perhaps, we should have stuck with the nagiri. re: rolls. The Sunset roll was decent. The Marilyn Monroll had potential, but the soy wrap was just okay and the crab overpowered the other flavors. The spicy tuna roll and the spicy tuna included within other rolls was disappointing. Like every Yelp recommended, SoCal sushi restaurant we have visited so far, the spicy tuna doesn't taste fresh and seems premade, with the spicy flavor wayyy overpowering the tuna, which you can barely taste. We have had freshly made spicy tuna, and this is not that. The main reason for giving Sushi Imari a 2-star instead of a 3-star is due to the fact that the scallop in our Red Zeppelin roll was VERY fishy, so fishy that we decided not to eat half of the roll. This hasn't happened to us in ages, and is the main reason we won't be going back to Sushi Imari. Went here for the first time to do a Christmas gift exchange with a friend and only picked this restaurant due to the high ratings. My friend and I only had rolls because their selection of sushi is very slim and way over priced. The rolls are still on the high end too. My friend and I were very disappointed in the quality of the food based on the high rating. I've had better rolls at sushi takeout. The server was very friendly to me, but treated my friend as if she didn't exist. They were also periodically cleaning the nearby tables with a very strong cleaner which made eating the subpar food even more nauseating. The only upside of the experience was the soup, dumplings, mussels, and ice cream they provided on the house. I will not go back, my money is better spent elsewhere. read more

After reading so many good reviews about this spot, my boyfriend and I decided to check this place out. Im giving them 2 stars for good service. We were sat right away, all the servers and chefs were pleasant. But otherwise, the sushi was rather disappointing. We sat at the bar and ordered 1 piece of Salmon sushi, 1 piece of yellowtail sushi, the spicy tuna crunchy roll and a bowl of Udon Soup. I watched the chef cut our pieces and hand us the plate but the salmon sushi was WARM and cut much too thin. Gross. The yellowtail however was still slightly cool and cut well. This was about the only part of the meal I enjoyed. It seemed like the cooler that they keep the fish in either needed to be turned to a cooler setting or replaced. The spicy tuna crunchy roll had great flavor but the seaweed was extremely chewy, seemed very dried out, not fresh. Not good. I only ate the one piece and couldn't force myself to eat another. Next the udon soup. I was unimpressed again. The broth was watered down. Our waiter brought us a few freebies, onion rings and gyoza. The onion rings were good but the gyoza tasted like it was previously frozen. The freebies did not make up for the warm sushi or chewy seaweed. I left disappointed and still hungry. This is, hands down, my favorite sushi spot in all of orange county! My husband is a bit of a sushi snob and this is where he took me on our first date. Now we come back for almost every date. Not only because it's a special place to us but because the sushi is truly that good. We've had everything on the menu 10 times over, it's always just as good. Wow i was originally gonna write a giant review about every detail but i realized that it'd be too long cause of all the great things at Sushi Imari. The place is pretty hard to find so make sure you have someone who knows where to go or can spot out the place or you might be circling around for a while. The water glasses are big which is an A+. The service is some of the best service I've ever had in my life. I ordered the dinner combination which is a great deal where you can get beef teriyaki, a roll, and sashimi for thirteen dollars at dinnertime. The place offers a ton of rolls and they have some really interesting names hehe. Another great thing about Sushi Imari has to be that they play the best music. Some songs i heard were from jewel, five for fighting, and dexy's midnight runners. No one can resist come on eileen XD. The Lakers game was on but the TVs were a little fuzzy. However, the sushi chef turned the TV to give my friend and I a better view which was great. The food is probably the best japanese food that you can find at this price. My beef teriyaki was really really tender while my rolls were really yummy. My spicy crunchy tuna roll was really crunchy for once and had every type of taste with every piece. Something that i absoloutely loved and couldn't stop laughing about was that our dinner combinations both came with a choco pie! That is definitely called class. The waitress also gave us a vegetable spring roll that included some sweet and sour sauce which was really nice. After enjoying all of my food and being extremely full from the expanding rice + gigantic water glass the watiress asked us if we wanted ice cream. One mouthful bite of their "Snoopy" sushi and I have completely forgotten about our regular sushi place. This will be my new favorite sushi place. I have been going to Sushi Imari for 3 years now and I gotta say, i love it! I have tried other places and none of the compare to this place. Gino, the owner of this restaurant and his staff are awesome, very nice and attentive, they always have a smile on their face and always give you what you ask for. The rolls are amazing, my favorite is the RED HOT CHILI PEPPER ROLL AND THE FIRE ROLL. The spicy tuna salad is delicious too, but what I really go there for is the ponzu sauce. Gino makes it special because I have asked for it at the other places I've tried and it does not taste the same, he adds Siracha hot sauce and smelt eggs, you need to try it. The fish there is always fresh, unlike other places. The place is nice and cozy. It gets pretty busy towards the end of the week at night but the wait is not too long. The service is very fast, although the servers can be pushy at times when the restaurant is busy (to turn the tables faster). My roommate and I ate here last Wednesday night. Neither of us are very experienced sushi eaters, but we are trying to slowly expand our culinary palettes. We started off with the tempura appetizer, which had two large shrimp, an avocado slice, acarrot slice, a green bean, and one zucchini slice. The batter was light and crispy. We ordered the "Krusty Crab" roll (deep fried CA roll- I told you we're noobs) which was really good. We also had a roll that was basically a CA roll with a tempura shrimp inside and topped with avocado and eel sauce. It was also really good. Our "adventurous" roll was the Rainbow roll- CA rolls topped with a variety of raw fish. Tame for experienced sushi lovers, but it let us try some actual raw fish without being overly intimidated. I really liked it- the fish was fresh and I think I'm starting to understand the "mouth feel" people talk about when eating sushi! :) The server was really nice and friendly. He gave us a free sample of onion tempura and two pot stickers, which were delicious! My only complaint was that the sodas are served in cans- they give you a glass, but I have a weird pet peeve about lack of fountain drinks in restaurants. Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves and will be coming back- hopefully to expand our horizons! Not from around here and was craving sushi like no other. So glad this was the first place to pop up in my location for yelp. The sushi master was very kind and the sushi came out very promptly. Although, the regular waiter staff lagged a bit. Forgot some of our orders and also necessary utensils to eat with as well. I'm a very patient person and work in the industry so it didn't bother me too much. But they realized their mistake without us saying anything, and the kitchen sent us out two complimentary side dishes in their apologies. I was super impressed! Overall my experience was fantastic! And would definitely go back there to eat if I'm ever in the location again. Ps- they have this roll that they're experimenting with. Its not on the menu and was the best thing we ordered! I came here for dinner last night and I would say that this place is a hidden gem. They are on par with Nana San, but quality is above Shunka and Ohshima for comparison. Their portion is quite generous and chef gave an extra piece of nigiri twice. I was surprised to find out they offered kinmedai, chu toro and o toro along with tasteful Scottish salmon and amberjack. The only negative I can say is the rice which was not cooked completely and quality was good enough for a decent meal. Price for one order (2 pieces) of o toro, kinmedai, kanpachi, hotate, Scottish salmon, king salmon and yellowtail along with a beer and salad was $61 after tax. I am looking forward to come back to find out what else would be offered on a different night. read more

i love this place. not only does it have sentimental value, but the staff always remember me and my boyfriend. it's just so sweet, and it shows they value our patronage. it's a mutual thing - we always appreciate the superb quality sushi here. they won't serve sushi to you UNLESS it was fresh off the boat. if it's not fresh, they ain't servin' it. sorry if you were REALLY craving toro today, but if it wasn't caught today, you're not getting it. you know how you know it's fresh? the sushi is served at room temperature. don't believe me? look it up on chowhound, wikipedia, japanese tourism sites, etc. i have japanese friends whose moms throw out yesterday's sushi from the fridge. they don't serve that shiz. they don't even cook it or throw it in a soup for gaddsakes! i nearly keeled over and died when i saw sushi-grade fish getting thrown away. i ALMOST asked to take it home... ANYWAYS. the special thing about sushi imari is how Chef Ahjussi ("uncle" in Korean) tops each piece of sushi. it's not just drenched in sauce and hidden away by gimmicks. he dresses sushi to bring out it's own natural flavors because it's such a great quality piece of fish that he's got nothing to hide about it. room temperature pieces with bonito flakes and chiffonned scallions or lemon zest with chiffonned shiso leaf, maybe just a simple dash of ponzu on the sushi. there's nothing to overpower the sweet-water flesh of the fish. only accents to the silky textured, flavorful fish. and TONS of that sushi too! they don't skimp here. we ordered scallops with mayo tonight and the pieces were overflowing! what a sight to see!!!!! same with the uni. it wasn't just two feathers of uni, it was a generous heap of luxurious goodness! i just love it. i've had rolls here before but i generally just load up on the sushi. i really don't need that crazy mix-match that rolls offer. BUT the rolls that i had were really delicious. the marilyn monroll was really bright and light. they use cute pink soypaper in place of seaweed. if you haven't had that, try it: you will be pleasantly surprised at how it softens the roll up compared to generally chewy seaweed paper. you might have seen my review for sushi tomo. i still get mad about it. after that meal, i was dreaming about sushi imari. i mean, how sad is that? the meal at sushi tomo was so bad that i was dreaming about my favorite sushi restaurant. so we had sushi imari today for dinner and it was EVERYTHING I DREAMED ABOUT. the sushi was fresh, flavorful, silky in texture, sweet from the nurturing waters the fish was living in... it was such a wonderful meal. and Chef Ahjussi always remembers us and gives us a little snack sometimes to hold us over for our next course. you will never guess what for 10 orders of sushi (1 order complimentary, 2 pieces each order), a large flask of sake, complimentary baked salmon belly, 2 green teas, and 2 orders of ice cream was... $65 bucks. enough said. read more
