I really hate to give a bad review but I do feel the need to as we chose this place due to its positive reviews on the "find me gluten free" app and the items on the menu marked with/without gluten. Unfortunately, I have celiac disease and I had one of the worst reactions in my 10 years of having this disease after eating here. I was hospital level sick and was definitely given gluten accidentally. There are items on the menu that are marked as having no gluten, but when we asked about if they're fried in the same frier they said they are. So those items are not gluten free if you have celiac or intolerant and can't handle cross contamination. We ordered mostly gluten free items, and the only gluten items we placed at the far end of the table so I would not eat them. But there must have been a mistake on one of the items and I was given gluten, or there was some serious levels of cross contamination happening. The food was great and the ambiance is nice as well, so I would definitely suggest it if you don't have celiac disease. But I hate to report that I did get extremely ill from eating here as a celiac, so I would not recommend coming if you have allergies. Normally I would not want to leave a bad review, but your menu/app reviews would lead many celiacs to believe they can safely eat here so I would feel irresponsible not trying to save someone else. read more

Went to Chola with friends last evening. The food and the service were excellent. It is my son's go to restaurant for take out. We had tamerind eggplant and chicken hariyali for appetizers - both were excellent. For entrees, we shared saag ghost, malvani fish curry and Dak Bungelow chicken curry with garlic naan - all were excellent as well. Will definitely go there again. read more

Went there with my family on a weekday and it was really busy. They said it would be a half hour before we would be seated but Min got us a table in 10 minutes! We ordered the Baghari Jhinga (Creamy Mustard Shrimp), Chicken Chettinad, Manglorean Fish Fry, Tamarind Eggplant and the Malvani Fish and finished with a Masala Chai. All of it came out hot and flavorful with the perfect touch of spice. Chola is one of my longtime go-to Indian restaurants in Manhattan. Are you a chaat (Indian street food) lover? The Ragda Patties at Chola are SO GOOD. Order it as your appetizer for sure. Their garlic naan is to die for; just perfectly buttery, fluffy, and crispy in all the right proportions. You want an order of this to soak up all your curry... mmmm. As someone who could eat Indian food regularly and never get sick of it, I will say I'm often disappointed when the spice level at Indian restaurants is watered down for more American palates. Luckily, Chola's spice level is great and if you specify you'd like something extra spicy, they'll take care of you. Have dined here so many countless times. Just came back from London where I ate at some of the top Indian restaurants. Chola stacks up to each and every one of them. It all starts with the service which is outstanding to say the least. Every waiter and manager is attentive and friendly. The food is absolutely outstanding, lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka masala being some of the best I've ever had. All the vegetarian dishes from the dal to the saag to the aloo gobi all fantastic. I couldn't think of a better restaurant for Indian food in NYC. Wow. Highly recommend. 10/10. read more

Just finishing our lunch at Chola and it was excellent. Ordered many things on the menu. Two shrimp, dishes, 2 eggplant, dishes, lentils, chicken, tikka song, paneer, grilled mushrooms. Highly recommend the baby eggplant and any shrimp dish. Staff was delightful and helpful in decoding dishes. I was not familiar with papadum was fresh and crispy. Non-was warm right out of the oven. Saw this on the Michelin guide for NYC and wanted to try it. We had dinner on a Saturday night. As expected, the place was humming, good interior, nice ambiance. They have really low ceilings so careful when you get up, you may hit a light fixture. The food was mostly good. The dilliwali butter chicken was average, the lacha paratha was waaay too hard (frankly should've sent it back), but the chicken biryani, kodi vepudu appetizer and lam seekh kebabs were to die for! I would give it a 4.5 stars because it was quite pricey but i'll round down to 4. the food was really great though. Went for lunch with a friend and we were pleasantly surprised! Food: -Lata Shetty's Kori Gassi: this was a creamy/coconut-y curry like butter chicken but with some heat/spice. I've never had this curry flavor before and it was REALLY good. I HIGHLY recommend this one. both of these dishes uses dark meat (i think chicken thigh) which makes it also more juicy and not dry like some other places. -Melugu Kozhi Chettinad: this one was also great. they grind the spices in the kitchen and you can taste it. very flavorful and spiceful but not too spicy. I still personally prefer the kori gassi. Price: expensive. It was $23 for each of these curries before tax/tip. AND rice or naan were not included. Most indian places at least include rice. Overall, highly recommend checking this place out at least once (and def get the kori gassi) but just know that it's gonna be more pricey than your usual indian spots around the city. read more

This place fortunately offers both, plus a calm ambiance in an effortlessly elegant setting. We stared with the onion fritters and samosas. Both were so flavorful, crunchy, and tasted fresh. For our entrees we chose martha stewart's butter chicken as well as the alu gobi and martha stewart's onion naan. First off the chicken was exquisite, buttery with a little spicy kick and so tender with perfect small chicken bites. The naan was fresh, not too thick not too doughy, crispy but soft and simply perfection. The alu gobi was full of spices plus a little sweet and potatoes were buttery soft. Everything was delicious, we could not be more satisfied. We did not get rice because we had enough food and even took home leftovers. Service was also very attentive and efficient. One of our favorite local Indian restaurants! We love the interior - very sleek and modern. They can be pretty busy on weekday nights but there's usually always room for walk-ins. The 3 of us split: Saag Paneer, Butter Chicken, Khade Masale Ka Gosht (lamb curry). Highly recommend all of these with Garlic Naan. All was excellent and had very generous portions. We got Basmati Rice and Naan with it and they gave more than enough. Can't wait to come back again and try more from their menu! read more

With so many places in Manhattan and so much Indian food you'd need to ask what's so special? Well I don't really know how to answer that except to say this place is so damned good. Went here on a cold night. Look for the clock sign if you are looking for it. You go down the stairs into warmth and a warm Indian welcome too. The menu has a lot more Coastal Indian dishes and with additional dishes you may not find in some Indian restaurants. Innovative cocktails...try them. There is one with rose hip/juice. The vegan/veg dishes amazing. I had a black lentil Dal..spicy. The pumpkin dish is exquisite. Succulent pumpkin chunks of orange in Indian spice. Wow!!! Curry is so sweet and amazing. I had so many things I wanted. That night the had a lot more dine in than expected. The manager told us they had about 60% take out still. But slow was great in this case as we were not rushed as a party of 8 and enjoyed each savory dish. Btw the biryani went buy with a puff bread on a crock of goodness. I'd try that next!!!! read more

Chola is a little place south east of Central Park. We ordered food family style so I'm not sure what I ate, but everything was delicious. I know I had a rice dish with the bread baked on top (so well seasoned and has a lot of history to the dish), chicken curry, beef curry, and garlic naan. Horrible and rude customer service. We ordered 5 dishes for a takeout and one of them was dilliwala butter chicken. Instead we were sent chicken tikka masala (dark red curry with bell peppers and onions in it) instead of the creamy butter chicken. I called to amend this but was shouted upon by the gentleman who took my call and was told this is the way their chef prepares butter chicken. When I challenged this got more rude behavior and I just gave up deciding not to order ever again if the dishes do not match up to the actual taste and description. Walked over here for a nice outdoor dinner on a warm Saturday night. Only a few tables available outside, but did not have a wait for two. Menu has a wonderful selection of both north and south Indian cuisine. Decided to start off with the Bhel Puri ($8) - a large portion of puffed rice crisps mixed with chutney. Way sweeter than I expected, was hoping for more of the Green chutney spice, but fine overall as a starter. Main course, ordered the Kori Gassi ($20) paired alongside Kerala Parotta ($5). Chicken is super heavy with a thick coconut cream curry, and a tempered spice. Parotta is a bit greasy but comfortably goes with the curry. Everything is so heavy, could only manage half before packing the rest to go. Washed it all down with a Mango Margarita ($12) that tasted fresh. Definitely more expensive than I would like, especially with bread and rice not included. However you get free papad to start and the service is top notch. Chola is one of those NYC restaurants that's truly something special. The atmosphere is top notch, much nicer than most NYC Indian restaurants, and the menu has so many unique choices. More importantly the food is to die for. Special shout-out for Lata Shetty's Kori Gassi, a coconut cream chicken that is some of the best chicken I've ever tasted. They use Branzino in their Fish Moilee and it is spectacular. I grew up in an area with a lot of Indians and subsequently a lot of Indian Restaurants but Chola is my all time favorite. We found Chola through Michelin guide and it has lived up to the reputation. I have tried indian restaurants around manhattan and this one is our favourite.
