Food was amazing. Pancakes were soft and fluffy and decently priced! I also got the blackstone, which was probably the best breakfast I ever had (but I don't eat out for breakfast that often). I will always remember this restaurant as being my favorite in Bend. I love everything about it-the outdoor and open seating with plants and flowers and grass everywhere (okay this is coming from a Vegas girl, I really appreciated the beautiful scenery outdoors to enjoy), the live music playing while you wait for a seat, the service and the every employee we encountered, the garden on the side of the restaurant, the local food used, I can go on and on. We visited for the first time on our most recent trip to Bend. I had the sampson eggs benedict (crab cake served on house bread with poached eggs and a sauce choron) and a side of sweet potatoes. I really liked my eggs benedict and normally I love sweet potatoes but sadly, most of my potatoes were not fully cooked so they were still hard and crunchy. My fiance's taters (potatoes with onion, garlic, and paprika) were also under cooked. The few pieces that were cooked fully were very good but a majority were not that way. After reading other people's reviews and looking through pictures of the various entrees, I wanted so badly to love the entire meal. Maybe it was an off day but if I'm at a restaurant that specializes in breakfast / brunch and has such outstanding reviews, I expect the potatoes to be cooked. We both want to come back here and try it again on our next trip. Hopefully the potatoes will be cooked properly and I can update this review as well as feel confident in recommending this as a brunch option for our wedding guests. Until then...3 stars. read more

Gave Chow 3 separate tries to impress as they once did with their food. 1st time, a weekend extremely busy, figured maybe they were just short handed and food was rushed. 2nd time, well it's not as good as it used to be but I ordered something new so could be that. Today, 3rd time after giving them 5 stars previousky, I ordered pancakes. All I wanted was Chows giant, pancakes. Ordered the pumpkin ginger. Pancakes we're almost runny they were so undercooked, tasted like melted ginger chew candy. Not like they used to at all. And not to mention they were about 1/2 the size as they used to be. I'd give lower stars , but I have hope they will replace whomever they lost in the kitchen and front of house over the last year to get them back on track. read more

Visited here for the first time recently. Really liked the place. Here's a run down: Wait for a table - long, but it was a Sunday am, so expected. Hostess - beautiful, nice, but the back of her black skirt was *covered* in dog/cat hair. Not good in a food establishment. Waitress - very nice, friendly. Coffee - very good, but didn't seem very hot. Pumpkin-ginger pancakes - good, large (maybe split them w/ a friend), but both flavors were too mild. They didn't spice it like a pumpkin pie, so you don't get that pumpkin memory trigger - that's fine, but then they needed to up the pumpkin and ginger. And, while I know pancakes can cool quickly, ours were barely warm, and we were eating indoors, so they should have been warmer. Cheese polenta - very good. Bacon - good. Interior/exterior - charming, w/ great sunflowers and other flowing plants. read more

While visiting family in Bend...we decided to give Chow a try for breakfast. The restaurant looks so warm and inviting from the outside. Beautiful outdoor sitting too. This restaurant is busy...and with great food you'd expect a short wait...and we have no complaints about that. It's the Wait Staff's attitude....they're in no hurry to seat you, or serve you. We visited twice, and on both visits got the same Waiter with the same attitude. What's with that? Food is very good to excellent! But despite that, I think we'll skip Chow's next visit and try a more customer friendly place. And believe me, in Bend there are plenty of excellent restaurants to chose from. Really the Owner or Manager has to take a candid look at his staff....Good food is one thing, but you have to have GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE too. After all, you eat out using expendable money, and we're not going to eat at a place that makes us feel like they're doing us a favor by waiting on us!!!! read more

Awesome food, charming setting, the only downfall being that is is quite popular and it will take forever to be seated and served. The menu is compact but there are enough options to please everyone. The food is high quality, fresh, and flavorful. I had the Caesar breakfast, and it was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. The corn cake was out of this world good, the sauces were amazing, and the potatoes are divine. The table salsa's they serve are remarkable, especially the chipotle. My husband got the Local, which is the most basic breakfast, and didn't find it as filling as everyone likes a breakfast out to be, so I'd recommend going with one of the specialty plates. The only real negative is the wait. It took us an hour to be seated, and then it was another 45 minutes to get our food (for 5 people) after we placed our order. But the setting is cute and there is ample wait area seating, so it's not too bad. read more

Went here during the day, waited maybe 10-15 minutes, not long at all. Great service, super nice people and a decent sized menu - not too many options so you aren't flustered with what to order, yay! I had some coffee (not that great,eh), had the huevos rancheros with cornmeal encrusted tomatoes: yummmm! They provide you with three housemade spicy sauces, so I tried them all. Soooo good! Both experiences have been pretty amazing. We haven't had any issues with service, everyone has been friendly and attentive. I can say in August when we went there were flies..but it was August! Flies abound out here. So, the last time we had The Sampson & Huevos Rancheros ...both delicious! This time around, we had the special, Pork Benny, and the Chicken Fried Steak..mouthwatering goodness. The drinks are always spectacular (Kentucky Blue & Margarita ..Santiago knows how to make a killer drink)! Only complaint was the blue cheese on the Country Fried Steak..a tad but overpowering. Next time, we are back (which will probably be tomorrow since we are here for the weekend..it will be onto a next item on their menu). Slight note, I didn't pay attention to the "Special" pricing and didn't realize the Pork Benny was $18..which stung a bit..still good but a little spendy. read more

As you park and approach how can you not be delighted with the building and grounds? Lovely. Entering, the cooking smell washes over you and immediately you know you wont be able to decide. There will be too many fabulous things. Then, you see the specials board. ah mann you can hardly make your mind up looking at the board let alone when you sit down with the menu and see the rest of the choices. What a great place. An eggs benedict special with sausage and a stew sprinkled with micro sprouts was beautiful and warming. A work of art for the taste buds and eyes. The warm cheesy grits- I could come back just to snuggle up to a bowl of that. It was glorious after my night of margaritas at Hola. (Im too old to drink like that anymore). This place has very creative bunch menu. The atmosphere is cozy and staffs are friendly. The coffee was great and the wait was really short compare to other brunch places at Portland. The only negative part is that it took way too long for the waitress to get my order once I sat down. It may be that they were super busy but can't help to feel a little neglected. We've been using Yelp for years and we rely on the reviews, but the experience at this restaurant was so far from 4.5 stars that we have to say something. Waited 1 hour for our table ( like most patrons) but then waited another 50 minutes for our breakfast! Our server, Mike told us that it was the kitchen, but that didn't seem to be the case for the 3 tables that sat down after us. We got the impression that locals got preferential treatment. As for food: my brother and I had eggs Benedict varieties and they were excellent. My wife and sister in law had huevos rancheros that were so-so. Same with the pancakes. Last time we will go. We are locals and over the years have tried Chow more than once. They continue to "expand" the business with outdoor seating while leaving everything else to deteriorate. Inside the fabric covered bench seating is very dirty! The chairs, which are also fabric covered, are equally dirty. The tables are wood, the finish long ago worn off. The floors and walls need a good cleaning, just see food particles and fingerprints everywhere! The interior may be "charming" to some but we find it to be very wornout and unclean. Not sure how this is all ok with local health inspectors. None of these surfaces can be adequately cleaned to any standard we are comfortable with. The food is consistently inconsistent! Tried them for one last time today, discussed in advance. Sunday morning at 8am. Our breakfast, the Vinny and the Caesar, were both delivered cold, at the very best slightly warm. The coffee is poorly brewed, may be just the quality. This has been our experience more than once. Server never comes back after they deliver the food the table...no more coffee, etc. No one cared enough to ask how our breakfast was just picked up the card, ran it and thanked us for coming in. Apparently they appreciate your business just don't care what you think. The tourist industry will likely sustain them....but as locals we will not go back. There are still lots of really good, clean restaurants in Bend and the surrounding area we can choose to give our business to and will vote with our money read more

I can see why this place gets good reviews... There is a cozy atmosphere, helpful friendly staff & a cute little fireplace in the back. We walked in and only waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Luckily it wasn't super busy because there really isn't a space to wait inside. It was very cold outside and even the fire going on the patio wasn't enough to keep warm. We had a great waitress who made recommendations and suggestions based on our questions. I settled on the Pho as it was about 11 am. Wasn't the best I've ever had but the broth was tasty, there were plenty of meatballs and noodles. I wasn't hungry when leaving. RER had the local scramble with creamy polenta. The dish was just ok. Kind of sloppy in the plating and the polenta bland. I'm not going to rave about this place like some other reviews as I give it an ok overall. That being said I would and probably will go back. If you're a super brunch snob lower your expectations a little and give CHOW a try. One thing - the cushion seats that use the wall for a backrest are not comfortable at all. Went here on a monday, the first week of september 2012. The building is actually a home that has been turned into a restaurant. So there are various spaces inside, all cozy rooms where you can sit. There is also a spacious patio outside and a beautiful garden to enjoy. We got here early as we heard it is a popular place. They seated us within 10 minutes of arrival. The large group of snobby Californians next to us were very loud and made their pretensions known. I overheard them saying something about a wedding, and commenting on the food "only in Oregon, ha ha ha." We didn't let that stop us from enjoying the food though. I am gluten free but was delightfully surprised at the options I had on the menu. The server was well versed in gluten free foods, so I had no hesitations when ordering. We had bloody mary's to start, I requested extra pickled items which was obliged. My husband I both thought they were quality drinks, and I liked the unusual pickles. We moved on to coffee for him and a chai latte for myself. I slurped the latte in less than 5 minutes, it was spiced and hot, perfect for the cool morning. Picky coffee drinking husband says their coffee is good too. Our food arrived withing 15 minutes, even with a crowded dining room at this point. It was hot and the portions were ample. I ordered "the ceasar" (2 Eggs, Corn Cake, Avocado, Roasted Green Chili Sauce, Hollandaise Sauce, Queso Fresco) and it was scrumptious. It was also very filling. I wish a breakfast place where I live would serve something like this. The only thing I didn't really enjoy were the cornmeal crusted tomatoes I ordered on the side. they were small, and lacked seasoning, maybe a little too crunchy. My husband is a corned beef hash aficionado, so that is what he ordered. It was chunky, definitely homemade and he said it was "great." Which is a good rating for him. We left stuffed and very pleased with the meal. We are fairly frugal but the money was well spent here. If we make it back to Bend I really hope this place is still here. I would not recommend this place for large groups of people. Anything over 6 people would just be pushing it in this space, especially in the cold weather season. read more

Delicious! I had the local with scrambled eggs, bacon, gf toast, and fruit. My boyfriend had the Caesar and said it was "out of control good", which is a lot bc he never remarks on food other than to say something is good or not good. The gf toast was lightly toasted and fluffy. The fruit bowl was fresh with some of the best fruits (pineapple, cantaloupe, raspberries, blueberries).
