This is such an unassuming little place that has fantastic food! I had the clam chowder and it was very good. My husband had a sandwich, you build your own, and he picked out basics like turkey and cheese, but DANG his sandwich was DELICIOUS! The bf and I went around lunch time and were surprised how busy their parking lot was (we saw some people use the church parking lot across the street as overflow parking)! Service was friendly and the portions were large! I ordered half a French dip sandwich and a bowl of their clam chowder, and he orders a crab roll and clam chowder. I managed to finish the half sandwich and maybe half of the chowder and was utterly stuffed! We couldn't believe how large their soup portions were! Mind you, their chowder is definitely top 3 that I've had. Bf's crab roll was stuffed with fresh crab and was really tasty too! Food was good. Service was horrible. Not once did the waitress ask me if I wanted anything else after I hate my soup. I sat there for more than a half hour wanting to order a piece of chocolate cake. The chowder had to be tried since it's synonymous with their name. I had the smoked salmon chowder (bowl, $7.50). It was thick and creamy. I couldn't taste the smoked salmon or find any in the chowder so the thought that the soup was heavily thickened with flour had crossed my mind. It did taste like chowder though. They have a long list of coffees, milkshakes, and other drinks. Overall, we had an ok experience. Was in Fairbanks to catch the lights. Yelped this place because I was craving clam chowder. Chowder was good and I liked that it didn't seem TOO heavy. Still creamy and thick but I thought it wasn't artery clogging. Mom and pop style place. Had the salmon chowder. I've had better chowder elsewhere but it did do the trick for us. Saw people come in on their way to work to take it to go. Must be a hit with the locals. Inside is a cute seating area with tables/chairs. Clean. We stopped into this little place on our first day in Alaska and I have a feeling we will be back before the week is over! The sandwiches were great but the soups and chowders are a must try! I had the chicken salad croissant and hubs had the roast beef with bacon and sprouts. Both were excellent sandwich but the clam chowder stole the show! I ate a bowl there and got one to-go and had it the next day in the hotel room after a day of hanging with Santa and the Reindeer in the North Pole! Warm and filling and just what you want on a cold dark day! Also of mention is that every one of the servers was absolutely wonderful- so friendly and polite! The service was quick and excellent! I didn't get the name of the blonde haired guy who worked there but he was really awesome and told us a bunch of information from the menu to details about Alaska. We were looking for the northern lights and because of him we were able to catch them. Really awesome dude. We came in pretty late to closing and they still took us in. Quality food and quality staff. Ordered salmon clam chowder and halibut chowder. Also got the chicken alfredo. Portions are huge the server did not lie about how big portions are. Soup and sandwich place is quick and easy- get the Salmon Bake! You have to order the full size which is made with a sandwich loaf sized piece of bread so not too big but still filling for about $10. And make sure you ask for the dill spread. Half sandwich is "small" or actually just a half of a normal sandwich loaf piece of bread but good if you get the soup and salad. We tried the chicken salad too - it's a heaping and a half or more in a tortilla shell with grapes. Pretty good and definitely filling. The only complaint was they they use fake sourdough bread from the grocery store aisle and not the real sourdough with the crust on the outside and a little more denseness to it. Great spot. This place is a little gem of a find, and quite obviously very popular with the locals, as we saw quite the lunch rush. The food is great. Since my stomach is adjusted to PST, I was getting hungry. I walked in and the place was empty. I think there was only 1 customer but from the reviews, it sounded like this place was going to get busy during the "lunch rush." I ordered the clam chowder, chef salad, and grilled cheese sandwich with pepperjack cheese. The food came out pretty quick, since no one was there. I took sip of the clam chowder and it tasted like the canned stuff. I would expect their chowder to be their #1 item, since that's the name of the restaurant. I didn't taste like it was made from scratch, so I went on to the grilled cheese. The sandwich was what I expected, very homemade and tasted ok. The bread was average and didn't have any grill marks on it. Out of the 3 items ordered, I think the chef's salad was the best item. The texture was thick. It tasted like thicken soup with a bunch of potatoes and corn in it. Sandwich: it's a sandwich I can make at home with Safeway bought crab salad, lettuce, tomatoes in whole grain bread. Overall, it's a easy stop for a quick put together sandwich and soup.
