visited from out of town and was looking for an easy but tasty seafood spot. chowder house did not disappoint, portions were decent and the seafood had nice flavor, nothing was fishy. our table tried the seafood alfredo, seafood medley, crab roll, smoked salmon chowder, and halibut corn chowder. seafood medley tasted similar to a nice cioppino, cream sauce had brightness and acidity from lemon in the seafood alfredo. i preferred the smoked salmon chowder (smokiness and salmon flavor comes through) over the halibut corn chowder (a lighter cleaner chowder taste with more corn flavor than halibut) but both were enjoyed by the group. staff were pleasant, you might have to call them over because it is a pretty chill spot. we didnt feel rushed. if i visited fairbanks again i would definitely come for another meal here. read more

Wife & I like to share our meals so we got a bowl of Clam Chowder - I thought it was amazing, came out nice & hot, and I loved it. My wife is the cook so she added some salt & pepper which did make it bang even more. She had ideas on what would it make it better, but we both enjoyed the Chowder overall. I loved it !!! We also ordered the Seafood Alfredo, it had shrimp, chunks of halibut and crab meat. The creamy sauce was delicious and complemented with the different seafood just made for a real good dish. We cleaned out the bowl to the point that it was basically licked clean- lol, except we used the bread. Wife grabbed a slice of chocolate cake to go, very good and enough to share plus some for tomorrow. Plenty of parking, nice & clean and plenty of seating. The Staff was super friendly & helpful, walked us through the ordering process, seemed a little redundant with the filling out of paper, but it works for them. A little confusing on how to order at first, but overall, very friendly customer service. My wife got the salmon chowder, I the halibut. Both tasted amazing, with both fish smoked perfectly. On a cold day, however, I would have preferred the chowder to be more hot. The sandwich I ordered was just the perfect accompaniment, and my wife's croissant was buttery. We never received our grilled cheese, leading to my earlier comment regarding confusion on the ordering process. I've been wanting to come here for a long time since I come up here for work often, and I definitely wasn't disappointed. It's a really small location but it feels like a mom and pop style of restaurant. They're very friendly and you can seat yourself, and you mark on the menu what you want. You obviously want to try the chowders, the halibut and smoked salmon are amazing. But the best thing they make is the chefs special snow crab rolls. They're New England style, and it's a huge portion. The crab is delicious, and the buns are toasted perfectly. I didn't think I could eat both but it was surprisingly easy because they were so good. Went here during my trip to Alaska, we aimed to have some good Alaskan King Crab and finally had it in this restaurant. I called earlier to secure a table for 8 and they really prepared a table for us when we arrived. However, the table was too small, but they managed to accommodate us to a larger table. We order both chowders : Smoked Salmon Chowder and Halibut Corn Chowder, both are so good! But my fave is the halibut chowder because the smoked salmon was too smokey for me. We also ordered some garlic shrimp and Alaskan King Crab , and they were so good! I think this is one of the places where we spent our money the most because everything are just soo good. On my way out of Fairbanks, my local buddy suggested we go to the Chowder House. It is a cute little spot where you sit at any empty clean table and the server comes by and grabs your filled out sandwich form. It is pretty self explanatory on how to order so that was nice. I ordered the club sandwich on a croissant with a cup of the salmon chowder. The only reason I am not giving this place 5 stars is because it took SO LONG to get our order. Food was legit. I love love LOVE a good sandwich place. The soup tasted great but I think that it could have used a little zip in there. The sandwich was perfect. We thought the clam chowder was bland and lukewarm in temperature - seems like this is not uncommon opinion based on other reviews. There is a sign that says to please seat yourself on the wall that is a bit tricky to notice especially as a first-timer. When we walked in and idled at the front of the restaurant, not noticing the sign, the lady at the counter rudely told us to seat ourselves without looking up from what she was doing. Great chowder! We tried all 3 types which were tasty, but our favorite hands down was the halibut chowder. We also enjoyed a peanut butter shake and root beer float which had some of the best ice cream I've had in years. I then had to try the praline apple pie with more of that delicious ice cream. Other places have stopped so I was super excited to see they still have them as an option. The salmon was much better as it was seared and topped with lemon butter garlic. That chowder though... just do yourself a favor and order a bowl. We are visiting from out of town with a group of 16 college volleyball players for a tournament. We needed a place to eat dinner after a game, everyone was starving! After driving past this restaurant we decided to call ahead to see if they could accommodate our large group. 6:30pm on a Thursday and they had plenty of space for us which, after eating there is shocking because the food is DELICIOUS! The staff greeted us immediately and provided menus and order forms (I love this method of ordering bc everything comes out correctly and it helps with paying). The team ordered everything from the homemade potstickers (wow!), teriyaki bowls (both were delicious), shrimp pasta (plenty for two to share), smoked salmon chowder (had no idea this was a thing and it was SO Good!), cheese steak (the meat was tender), pasta salad (yum!), and clam chowder (so good). Basically everything we ordered was awesome and we were all so satisfied. The staff were friendly and kind, there was only three that we could see and with our party of 19 total there was also people ordering take out and some smaller groups dining in. The staff managed wonderfully and we were all able to pay separately (very tough but a requirement for us). Went for dinner on a Saturday, and we had the shrimp Cobb salad, the chicken teriyaki bowl, shared the soup of the day. It was steak chili... Such amazing and perfect portions! The crab is served cold, but I prefer a warm crab roll so next time I would order it that way. Even a can of Progresso Lite Clam Chowder beats this chowder. A little disappointed since they say this is a "chowder house". Besides clam, the menu also featured a halibut corn chowder and smoked salmon chowder for varieties. The price for 2 tuna sandwiches, 2 cups of soup, and 2 ice teas was just under $40. The waitresses were very welcoming, the space felt a little tight and dated but practical. I noticed some enticing slices of baked pie, and squares of cakes and other goodies in the little display case when I was at the cash register, a bonus. Sandwiches were much the same; how they put together the crab salad was actually pretty interesting (contrasts of sweet and salty), but the end result was pretty forgettable.
