Was hungry and needed something quick and easy, and wanted to try something new. The lines were long at all the other places, so decided to try here. I ordered the garlic chicken with the pancit and the lumpias. The garlic chicken wasn't too bad and the lumpias were okay. The pancit wasn't the usual pancit or noodles I was used to, it tasted more like mushy chow mein. Known in the Philippines as the Chinese themed fast food chain. These guys specialize in big portion combo meals that consists of noodles, meat, rice, dumplings and chips. It's a full meal for fast food price. Then a few decades back, they hit a home run on their Halo-halo special.   Growing up, the desert was a summer time favorite. Finishing off a meal with that baby is a definite winner in my book. This restaurant serves the halo-halo version in the Philippines is laid out nice and fancy in a big glass bowl. Here in the states it's served in a big tall plastic cup. But I'm not complaining. It's still good as heck.   They even sell the Taho, which is another childhood favorite in the Philippines. Ask any filipino who grew up there, they'll tell you without a hint of hesitation that those two are the king of sweet yummy snacks. The thing about taho is that it's usually served hot, so it's perfect for the colder season. Hot simple syrup, soft tofu and tapioca beads,,, yes its that simple for this comfort food to be as destructive as it is.   The place is clean, there's tables everywhere for you to place your food to eat. There's chairs for you to sit in and there's a soda fountain machine in the corner. No its not a fancy joint for you to eat in, but it's clean and there's plenty of space.   Life is awesome, come eat here cause its wicked good. Went for lunch before going into Seafood City for our Philippines groceries. There is also a Jollibee and Red Ribbon in this same location. This is a chain outlet. They have a whole range of chinese food for you to choose from like pancit, siopao, shumai, fried rice and the side dishes are dim sum of a few varieties to choose some. They also have soup noodles. The portions are quite small but the price a relatively cheap. Those on promotion are mostly already pre-cooked, so you get them fast. Others, you will need to wait for 10-15 mins. Portions are small though. If you need a quick and light meal then this is the place. During lunch the place can be quite pack. No doubt this is chinese dim sum but it is nothing like the original cantonese dim sum more like filipino version. Overall a decent value for a quick bite. read more

On my visit to Chowking, it seems that long lines are still the norm; they were understaffed, but I did enjoy watching the chaos of the staff filling orders. Nothing like a little entertainment to kill some time while waiting for your order to be filled! My main reason for my visit was to try their crunchy fried chicken. My friends told me that it had better flavor than Jollibee, so that is what I ordered - a 6-piece Crunchy Fried Chicken which consists of legs and thighs for $6.99. Yay!!! Bangus and tocino for lunch! The bangus (aka milkfish) is seasoned and fried and delicious. Kind of a small portion since I could probably eat half or maybe a whole one by myself, but it was in a two-item combo meal. The tocino is a cured pork that taste kind of sweet. Both of these go really well with the garlic fried rice! In essence, this is a typical breakfast (yes, breakfast!) meal in the Philippines. Oh, there were scrambled eggs in there? Yes, there were. I'd pass on them. That's not what you're buying the meal for. And the eggs were boring and yuck and tasting like fake. I also tried some of their "cutie" pao, but it's really just sio pao - the Filipino equivalent (or I guess they're practically the same thing) to the Chinese steamed bun, but maybe the insides taste a little different... I was very disappointed in the quality of their garlic chicken, the chicken was there.. but where was the garlic? I favor their soups more than their rice dishes. Chowking is one of the restaurants that opened in association with Seafood City a couple years back. The menu is unfamiliar, yet familiar. It is a mix of Filipino and Chinese dishes.Though some of the Chinese fare seems like a Filipino-Chinese take. This is a fast food joint. And though it serves Chinese dishes, it is not like Panda Express with hot steam tables. They are prepared fast food style. Many of the items also seem grouped into a combo meal with a drink. Though you can get some of the rice plates, noodle dishes a la carte. They also have siopao (humbao/steamed bun) on the menu here and a refrigerated case in which you can buy packs of siopao to eat at home. Pricing is reasonable. Nothing more than $8 even with a drink. I picked the garlic chicken lauriat which came with a fountain drink ($6.99). They call you by name when picking up your order. I was wondering how they would call my name since I didn't give it, but I guess that was already provided since I paid with a card. The meal itself was not good. Portion size was fine, but the food was bleh. The garlic chicken was fried, but it had no flavor. The lemon juice that came with it did nothing to improve it. Maybe BBQ dipping sauce would help here. The pancit noodles were a bit softer than I expected. The meal also came with two shumai which were okay, though it seemed very fast food-ish as in premade. I know, I know. This is a fast food joint. And two sesame balls which were decent. Arguably the best item of the meal. Did not like Chowking. To be fair, I should have just went to a Chinese restaurant if I wanted Chinese food. I have been waiting SO long for chowking to open near home... ever since I've came back from the homeland. I swore to myself though, that I would avoid this place because of the crowd and it's highly concentrated area of filipinos. But, if you're reading this and it's August 2010 until the end of the summer, I would advise you to GO IN THE MORNING. This suggestion is vital if you want to beat the crowds and avoid standing in line for 1hr+, which I have been told was the time that people were standing in line to eat here. I went there at 10:15 in the morning on a weekday, and I only had to wait like 10 minutes to order my food. I got something from their "all day breakfast" menu: The Garlic Fried Rice, Tocino, Fried Bungus (milkfish), and Eggs. Everything was pretty good, except the Eggs. They tasted soo spongy, kinda like the texture of an actual sponge. Surprisingly, mcdonalds eggs tasted better. I also got a large sized halo halo. YUM! I came here when it first opened and it was just pure chaos, but that has since changed. Service is still a hit and miss and the food is not all that great. The prices you pay for the quality of the food here is a bit pricey as the food is either bland, too salty or a small portion. I've had all the different pancits, wonton soup, arroz caldo, garlic chicken, fried chicken w/mushroom gravy, siopao, siumai, lumpiang shanghai, buchi-buchi, taho and the halo halo. Don't even get me started about the taho. It is just not good. Everything is just meh or bleh except the halo halo. The halo halo is the only thing that keeps me coming back. We heard about a few Filipino restaurants opening up at South Center Mall so we decided to check it out. It took about 10 minutes to put our order in and another 25 minutes to get it. We also ordered their vegetable lumpia, which i must say is adorable because its pretty small, but very greasy. Overall, the food was just okay in my opinion. I am not Filipino, but i've eaten a lot of Filipino food so I like to think I've had better. I guess anything w/extra oil kinda turns me off & the food is kinda bland. My SO and I were craving some halo halo after shopping at Southcenter mall last weekend so we decided to brave the line and get the King Size halo halo to share. Guess it's true that you need to look at how many people are eating at restaurants during their supposedly busy times. I came here during lunch and there were 5 tables occupied considering they had around 30 tables. I knew exactly why when I tasted the soup. I guess it's hard not to be biased about this place, since I do like Chowking back in Manila. Comparing the taste, they seem to be the same or don't deviate much from the Chowking back in the Philippines. Although they don't have the chilli garlic sauce here. :( I think you pay a bit for nostalgia. Some of the food seem over priced for what is basically franchised filipino-chinese fast food. But I think some of the meals have better value. The Lauriat has a lot in it's plate, ulam (entree), pansit (noodle), kanin (rice), and buchi for dessert. Decent food, I liked the buzzer given so we could sit down and wait for our food without staying by the counter. The problem was with the cashier. No one in line behind us but she still was rushing us. Put in our order wrong- of course after we sat down and a line formed. So I waited in line and then explained that she substituted noodles for rice instead of adding noodles in addition as I clearly said while ordering. She argued with me and said there was nothing she could do. I said that I'd like to order a side of rice so we could have some rice but instead of taking my new order and my money she continued to argue and tell me that I was wrong. What happened to the customer being right? I insisted on placing an additional order and paid for it. Wow, so many poor reviews, I guess I hit them on a good day. Chow King is one of a trio of fast food restaurants (the others being Jolibee's and Tokyo Tokyo) owned by the same restaurant group in the food court area at the NE corner of Westfield Southcenter mall. I have previously reviewed Jolibees and Tokyo Tokyo, and I'd put Chow King between the two. Like the others, CK offers a Pinoy spin on it's cuisine, in this case Chinese (the concept has mixed results; as noted in my previous reviews, the idea works fabulously at Jolibees, but fails dismally at Tokyo Tokyo). At CK, the idea works fine. I ordered a noodle soup (beef), and was very satisfied with the result, though I thought the broth was just a touch on the salty side. The Halo-Halo is delightful as well. Like it's sister restaurants, CK features superb staff. They are efficient and very pleasant (and mostly Filipino), and a delightful change of pace from the surly indifferent staffs at many American fast-food restaurants. Anyway, with respect and sympathy for my fellow Yelpers who have had a less than enjoyable experience at CK, all I can say is that I like them, and I suggest you check them out. read more
