For my 100th Yelp review, I chose neither a white-linen table restaurant nor a local favorite. I chose Chowking. We are a fast-food nation. And what America has exported as a dining concept worldwide is coming back to the mainland in the form of Chowking and Jollibee. A Filipino fast-food restaurant that has expanded in United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and now in Seattle, Chowking is as popular in the Philippines as it's parent restaurant, Jollibee. Be warned of long lines and confusing service during opening month. The line seems to be 20-person deep any time of the day. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU GO? They have fried chicken, but it's not like KFC. They have chinese food, but it's not Panda Express. It offers wonton and noodle bowls with beef or chicken broth, but they're far from pho. There maybe longaniza on the plate, but it's not Spanish; or tapa (beef jerky) but not American. Like the country where it came from, Chowking offers a blend of Filipino dishes reflective of the country's influences: Chinese, Spanish and American. WHATCHA GOT? I go for the boneless bangus (milkfish) rice meal. You cannot get this in any other fast food. Personally, I like milkfish. It comes with garlic rice and pickled green papaya. In the Philippines, it's served with vinegar to taste, but not here. The halo-halo is good but wish it's creamier. Here, it's served in a cup instead of bowl. It's great to try, and as fast food goes it is satisfying. Avoid meals with egg or beef. Ube (taro), mango and buko pandan shakes are all refreshing. I prefer ube. YOU GOT SERVED. Oh, the accent! I feel like I'm in Manila. They call out your name when your order is ready. I was with my friend Carrie. And the young Pinay at the counter called out: Curry! This is Filipino fast food. Expect the same service you'll find in McD, only with a twist. Lots of twist. TIP: If you don't find a table after you order, sit at the next fast food restaurant, Tokyo Tokyo. Fried chicken here was dry, definitely not as juicy as Jollibee's. We got the spicy flavored ones, and instead of having the flavor cooked into the skin, I felt like I was eating spicy powder on top of the skin, which made the experience not so pleasant and me craving for water the whole time. Haven't had a chance to try the other dishes on the menu, but with Jollibee's so close by, it'll be difficult for me to pick Chowking over the delicious fried chicken right across the hall. read more

I ordered 2 piece chicken and egg fried rice plate. Chicken is crispy like they advertise. The crispy skin reminds me of Mexican pork rinds. Light and airy crunch. Fried rice was decent for fast food. I also got the steam pork bun (soft exterior bun and meat wasn't too salty) and mango smoothie (I don't think was real mango and was a bit syrupy sweet). I still like Jollibee better which is right across from them. Ha! read more

When I was still living in Vancouver, BC, I was ecstatic when I found out about Seafood City in Seattle. Now that I moved to Seattle, I tell my friends back home it's not worth driving 2-3 hours just to eat at Chowking or Jollibee - might as well go to Goldilocks instead or go to a Filipino party and eat pancit or better yet, learn how to cook Filipino food. I think people are driven because it reminds us of our childhood back in the Philippines and how fun it was to eat at Jollibee or Chowking when we were younger. I only go there to eat bangus (milkfish). They always run out of my favorite drinks like taho, halo-halo and sago't gulaman but if you get lucky, order the halo-halo and taho because they are the best. read more

I went there last Sunday evening 3 weeks after grand opening but the line was still long and stretched outside into the mall. The wait was almost 30 minutes. Although the menu has a wide selection of items to satisfy most taste buds from Fried Chicken to Wonton Noodles.l I wasn't too impressed with their food menu but I liked their variety of drinks in their drink menu such as unique Hawaiian and Filipino drinks like Halo-Halo and Coconut Smoothies. To summarize, this restaurant is like Filipino based Filipino/Chinese/American Style Fast Food Chain with franchises in Dubai, U.A.E. (of all the unexpected places), Philipines, Indonesia and U.S.A. My opinion on their Chinese food is that their is no comparison with Panda Express' Chinese food quality and other mom and pop Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, which beat them "hands down." Both their Beef in the Beef & Bangle Fish Combo and the Fried Chicken were dark and overcooked and I had to exchange the Beef because it was so tough and UNPALATABLE. The manager was reluctant to give me a refund but was glad to give me an exchange. The Bangle Milk Fish was dry but still palatable. The rice that comes with the 3 piece chicken combo was seasoned with a chicken broth and sprinkled with peanuts on top and it was delicious. Both the Siamen (rice noodle) and the Squid Balls were okay. The Chicken Congee was yellow in color (possibly from either the chicken broth or eggs) and comes with sliced hard-boiled eggs and generous amount of boned-in chicken. It also tasted okay and my son liked it. Their Beef Brisket Wonton Soup Noodle was fair but just don't expect the authentic and thin Cantonese style Wonton egg noodles! They come with Spaghetti type thick egg noodles! Their beef brisket was dry but their wonton soup base and cabbage was delicious though. Their Sesame Balls were small and hollowed and hardly had ANY red bean paste fillings in them at all! We didn't try any of the Siabaos or Hum Baos because we don't eat portk but I assume they are like the Sesame Balls -- hollow! The only thing I really liked was their drink menu and my favorite was the Coconut Smoothie (Green in color) and Halo-Halo Hawaiian Dessert Drink but they were out of the Hot "Tapa" and "Taho" Soy and Tofu Dessert Drink with Boba, Soy or Grass Jelly Pudding that I wanted to try. I didn't care for the Taro Smoothie (purple in color), though. I would give them some time and a chance for their quality to improve since they just open and their staff must be overworked due to high demand and long lines. I don't recommend going there until after they've settled down for a while. Ezell's or KFC's Fried Chicken, Any Chinatown restaurant's Dim Sum & Wonton Noodle and even Panda Express's Chinese Food are ALL better and cost less than Chow King's! The Halo-Halo dessert drink was good but just get the Classic size for like $3 since the Supreme size cost almost $6 and it's too much for 1 person unless you share. The Coconut Caramel and Hot Tofu "Tappa" Dessert were NOT available but I would go back for those. I didn't try "Taho" (soy drink) with boba, soy pudding or grass jelly pudding; or any of the Shomai, Sia Bao, and Hum Bao since I don't eat pork. We literally waited 30 minutes for my wife's order of Chinese crispy chicken. This is suppose to be fast food. I swear there must only be 1 person working in the back. So... the much anticipated, overly hyped Chow King has finally arrived in the Greater Seattle area to the happiness and anticipation of a largely overlooked Filipino population. For years I have often wondered why Filipino Chain stores overlooked the massive Filipino population here. Well.. we are finally being acknowledged with the recent additions of Chow King, Seafood City, Tokyo Tokyo, Jolliebee and Red Ribbon... REVIEW: Having visited Chow King while in the Philippines as well as trips to SoCal I have to say I am very disappointed in their chicken... I know it probably comes pre-made and is dumped in a fryer.. but man.. talk about dryness to the 10th degree. I thought it tasted better than this. I would recommend steering clear of their chicken. Soups: I'll say the wontons and beef was pretty decent.. not the best.. but after waiting nearly an hr in line for our food, I devoured this baby like no tomorrow. Halo Halo: Ugh.. people let's just face it... it never tastes as good as when either your Lola/Inay/or mom makes it so why bother buying it? I know it's the convenience factor.. but really.. after waiting an hr in line.. i couldn't find the convince factor in that and for the price.. I could have bought most of the ingredients and made it at home. I mean it works if you are in the area and are craving it.. but I highly doubt a special trip just for the Halo-Halo is necessary. So after all the hubbub about Seafood City, Chowking, etc. I finally made my way over to see what the fuss was about. We ordered the fried chicken, palabok and of course halo halo. I was pleasantly surprised that the chicken was a-ok. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The palabok was forgettable, but the halo halo was very good. It has pretty much every topping (but not really a topping because its on the bottom) there is for halo halo. As far as I know, the halo halo comes in two sizes: -classic (about the size of a grande iced coffee cup) & -KING SIZE! (which reminds me a a big gulp from 7eleven) I hear the soup is good, so I'll have to try it next time I'm in the area! read more

You can get a surprising amount of food for REALLY cheap here. That's the main draw of this restaurant, along with the fact that it's right outside Seafood City. The downside is that the excessive calories may be a concern when you're eating stuff like fried rice, but prices here are so low that I think it's okay to cheat every once in a while regarding healthy eating. One bowl of fried rice with three pieces of shumai for $5.49 is a steal. I honestly think the food could taste better, but it's hard to complain when you're getting such a great deal. read more

The chicken even came with gravy but I didn't touch that since me and my chicken don't roll like that. I loved the fried chicken! The rice was perfect and yes, some places do manage to mess that up. I wasn't a fan of the sweet sauce on my vegetables because was it way too sweet. The environment was crowded which is understandable since it just opened recently. The people taking orders were friendly and I didn't to have to wait too long for my food to arrive. Wished I would of read the reviews before I tried it. It was convenient to shopping which is a plus. I got the combo meal chicken lauriat. Chicken was so dry, the first bite got caught in my throat. Tasted like it been sitting under a heat lamp all day. The soft noodles tasted ok, but was cold. They ran out of seame balls which I read was the best part of the meal. The food definetly wasn't cook too order. The halo halo desert was good though and my daughter ate that up. We won't be getting lunch there again. Halo Halo was what I was most excited for and it was okay. Kinda skimpy on the flan and ice cream. Better than any other halo haloserved here in Seattle. Palabok was decent - I would get it again. The lumpia shanghai was not good at all - Kawali Grill makes way better lumpia shanghai and better everything frankly. The siapao - mini was also incredibly disappointing. Pancit was icky. I am glad to see Filipino food becoming more available and yeah I will probably be back. But the Tokyo Tokyo place next door had better chicken and food and had absolutely no line. I never really ate at Chow King, but since I was at Sea Tac mall, my family wanted to eat there, so we did. The place can be super crowded at times and getting a table might be tough. There is always someone cleaning the tables as it seems most patrons dont throw away their food. I decided to go with the Garlic chicken. My experience was on a Thursday midday and it was limited to the Halo-Halo, Sio Pao, and Calamansi w/ honey drink. The place was empty but then again so was most of the mall so I didn't experience the long lines (as mentioned in other reviews). I ordered the large Halo-halo... and let me just say that thing is HUGE! I also grabbed a Sio Pao $1.80+ ea, it was moist and delicious! Update: The last time I walked by I decided to try their Calamansi drink...which if you're not familiar with the fruit, is an Asian version of lime but with 3x's the punch! Ordered the Bola-bola siopao and was a little disappointed that it was a lot smaller than the one in Cali but when I cut it open I was glad it wasn't just full of bread. The ratio of filling was perfect with every bite. I very much enjoyed the siopao sauce. Do not eat it without the sauce because you will be missing out on the goodness. We ordered two siopao to go and it took a while... I mean they weren't very busy because they were waiting for the food to be cooked for the other orders and we were just staring at the warmer hoping by some miracle it would just pack itself but finally the cashier went over to the warmer and got our siopaos. I peeked over the counter and the floor was quite dirty and had receipts on the ground... The workers seem like they hated working there... Filipino fast food. I've been here a few times and it's quick and decent enough. I will say I really like the beef wonton noodles.

The lines have subsided at Chowking (vs. Jollibee which is still insane line-wise) so I decided to check this place out. We had a group of 5 so I ordered the family pack which was a 10 piece with two sides, rice, and gravy. We had pancit canton and vegetable lumpia for the sides as well as an asado paio and halo halo. Unfortunately, they forgot to include the lumpia and we didn't find out til we got back to the family on the other side of the mall. Our food was hot and fresh. The fried chicken was a step-up from KFC or Popeyes, with crispy skin and a good amount of meat on the bones. The mushroom gravy was interesting, not something you'd find at most places but good for dipping and on the rice. The pancit wasn't anything special. I liked the asado paio, it's like a steamed pork bun you'd get at a chinese restaurant but the meat is shredded and the fillings are more varied. The halo halo is huge with lots of fillings and crunchy rice krispy type things on top. Overall, it was a good option for feeding the 5 of us for less than $40 and with food that's higher quality than most of the other mall offerings. Forgetting the lumpia loses a star and the mediocre pancit was a letdown, losing it the second star but check this place out next time Jollibee's line has got you down. read more

Chowking is to the Philippines as Panda Express is to the US. I only ever went to Chowking once in the Philippines so I might as well have no point of comparison. Can't quite remember what I ordered and what it tasted like. My boyfriend and I went to Southcenter because I got my wisdom teeth taken out and couldn't think of anything better than congee -- specifically, Filipino congee (lugaw, goto, arroz caldo or whatever else you wanna call it). We ended up going here and I order the lugaw with the tokwa (congee with tofu). It was... not bad. It wasn't particularly good either. Didn't care for the bland tokwa. The lugaw itself was fine but I definitely prefer the one from Red Ribbon. My boyfriend got the lomi and enjoyed that. We shared (fine, I ate 95% of it) the taho. Taho is steamed silken tofu served with a brown sugar syrup and tapioca pearls. It's commonly sold in the mid-mornings by peddlers and is a much beloved snack for young kids (cuz they're the ones home at 10 am). The pearls were a little bit too big and the portion was basically a mini vat... But I can't complain too much! I just wish they had like a $2 smaller serving version rather than a bowlful for $5. This place was in many states of disarray. It really busy when we came here. We were barely able to snag a (dirty) table. The tables didn't appear to have been wiped down all morning. The floor could've used some sweeping or mopping. There were no napkins to be found anywhere (so you only have the two dinky ones they provide) to wipe down the dirty tables either. Makes you wonder how sanitary their kitchen is. Overall, I wasn't impressed. I'd much rather make my own taho at home. read more

As the first of the major Filipino fast food chains to open in conjunction with Seafood City (I am not counting Grill City), the opening of Chow King and the promise of highly accessible halo-halo was much anticipated. (Come on, I used to have to wait until Pista sa Nayon to get my halo-halo... although, to be fair, they also had halo-halo at Kawali Grill...) So here's the deal... Halo-halo... The promised 18-ingredient King Size halo-halo is exactly as stated. They were not joking; the monstrosity is a meal all to itself. If you were planning to order a meal along with your halo-halo, you might want to consider sharing with one or two more people. Also, you might want to consider bringing your own long-stemmed spoon, because the plastic ones aren't strong enough to let you mix it with enough satisfaction. (Guys, the whole point of halo-halo is mixing it.. halo = mix.) The beef and chicken bowls... were pretty good. Also delivered with quite a lot of meat. Only complaint? Too salty. The breakfast plates... were ok. The longganisa isn't the actual longganisa I'm used to. If you were really craving some, I'd suggest just going to Grill City and buying some from the frozen section to cook at home. The chicken... is quite the favorite. And not just by us. In fact, they usually end up running out before closing. (And, yeah.... on order of EP+KP, we were the jerks that ordered 60 pieces and wiped out the supply one Saturday in August.) The arroz caldo... pretty good and comforting... but pretty salty. The noodles, ie, the pancit, the palabok, etc... are ok... and go well as side dishes if rice and chicken aren't enough for yas. Since we were going to Seafood City as soon as they opened, we were lucky enough to get there when Chowking just opened, and the service was great. We got our food quickly and it was decent. I had the beef wonton soup, which was allright. I mostly liked the beef and wontons in it, everything else in it was pretty meh. The mango drinks there are really thirst quenching, but small and a bit pricey for how small it is. Really, I think of it as "the restaraunt before Jolibees opens". Chowking is alright ... not the greatest, but it's alright. I have to admit I was SUPER excited to try it, because I've heard so much good things about it. And probably because everytime I go to the Seafood City section of the mall, I feel like i'm in the Philippines.... haha The line is still crazy on the weekends, and at this point, I refuse to wait in line for more than 10 minutes, but I understand that since this is the first one in the NW, a lot of people from all over are going to make their way there to try their food out. I did happen to go there the first day the opened. Ended up waiting like .. 2 hours in line, got to the front to find out that it would take another hour or so for food. I was not about to wait another or so, so I just got a halo halo, since that was the only thing that I could get that didn't involve any more waiting. The only thing that I get consistently, is the buko pandan shake! I even purposely buy like 3 of them so I can take it home and freeze it so that 1.) I can have it whenever I want it at home and 2.) I don't have to drive down there, get stuck in traffic in the parking lot of Southcenter and fight for parking, get mad at bad asian drivers and 3.) Don't have to wait in line!!!! There have been a couple of times where it is unavailable (they didn't make it right/its too watery) and it breaks my heart because I waited in their long ass line. But still, I LOOVE the buko pandan shake, and will be the only thing I get from there! The halo halo is pretty good too. I'll probably never get the super king size or whatever its called. That's just wayyy to much halo halo for me. But it is pretty tasty ... As for food, I've had their crrrrunnncchhy chicken, spaghetti, bangus, longaneisa (sp??), all of which were just, alright. I'll probably try food again when the crazniess surrounding Chowking dies down (probably next year). For now, I'll just say that their food is just ... all right . Probably not worth the 15+ minute wait (in line) plus the 10 or so minutes waiting for the food. Chowking's halo-halo is totally different from Jollibee's, which is a good thing. I liked how most of the toppings were on the top, instead of at the bottom, so you could choose when you wanted to eat them instead of having to dig around for them. The beans were also at the bottom, which meant I could pretty much avoid eating them. We tried ordering it without beans, but they told us it came "pre-made" with beans. I'm not sure how beans are supposed to be part of a dessert. The ube ice cream and milk both had nice, sweet flavors, and the red, green, and white pieces of gelatin were all good. I only got one tiny piece of jackfruit, but I liked the flan. The service was terrible. Everybody seemed to be getting their order quickly, and after about five people who ordered after we did got their food, we went to the counter to see what was going on. They wouldn't even acknowledge us until another customer told them we had been waiting a long time, and only then did they bag up our halo-halo. There are other desserts I'd usually rather have if I'm going to consume that many calories, but it is nice to get something different every once in a while. read more

I actually found the food at this branch of Chowking to be pretty good. They were actually my favorite chain fast food place back in the Phils. The adobo had just the right flavor and texture, with hints of vinegar, soy sauce, and pepper. The pancit was perfect too. The garlic rice was the only thing that was unusual, it was just regular rice with toasted garlic on top, and was sort of dry, but when i mixed the pork with it it took on a new life and got that good slightly oily texture that good garlic rice should have. I almost ordered desert but I was too full. For 50 cents more you can have mango or calamansi juice with your meal instead of soda. I was very satisfied with my choice here. read more
