We had the pleasure of trying the wonton soup, yesterday. We used DoorDash to deliver our food. The packaging Chowking uses to ensure hot food is hot and not spilling all over the place was amazing, and the wonton soup was equally as good, and delicious. I called ahead of time to make sure there was no cilantro, since my wife is allergic to cilantro. Today, we went back to try the Asian fried chicken. Wow! So, so good, once again. The "Great Halo-Halo Heist of West Covina"! I don't know who authorized this, but Chowking has officially committed culinary treason. Halo-halo is a sacred architecture. You need the shaved ice, the ube, the leche flan, and absolutely crucial to the entire texture and flavor profile: the sweetened beans. It is the literal foundation of the dessert. So imagine my absolute disbelief when I dug into my cup only to find a total desert. No red beans. No chickpeas. Nothing. Instead, they decided to completely gut the traditional recipe and fill the entire void with cheap, rubbery, green and red coconut jelly (nata de coco) bits. It's basically cup-o-gelatin disguised as a classic. They didn't put a sign up. They didn't update the menu descriptions. They just silently swapped out the soul of the dessert and hoped nobody would notice the blatant cost-cutting measure. It wasn't until I actually called the store to ask if they just forgot my toppings that they casually confirmed: Yes, they officially changed the recipe to replace all the beans with more jelly. If I wanted a cup of food-colored coconut gel, I'd buy a tub of it at the supermarket for two bucks. If you're looking for a real, authentic Halo-Halo that doesn't taste like a corporate corner-cutting scheme, steer clear of this location. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

We were in the area for a cousin's birthday party and decided to pick up some Siopaos to-go. They travel pretty well and I appreciate that they give extra sauce. We purchased both chicken and pork. The pork came with an egg inside. I enjoyed both but the chicken was a little dry. I hardly eat at a Chowking but their food looks really good. The breading on the Siopao was soft. Saw the ads many times on social media, had the opportunity to swing by to see what's all about. Got the promotion of buy 6 get 1 free. The two choices were asado(Chinese BBQ) or Bola Bola(savory meat balls). Looks very god on the display case, came out hot and fluffy. But, the taste is not there at all for both items. The Chinese BBQ, which was supposed to be Char Siu flavor is nothing like what is supposed to be. Even if you masked it with sauce, and it's still not here. we always eat Halo halo at chow king in Amar west covina. and our number Halo halo in town. Today we were very disaapointed with new Halo halo ingredients. There was a big sign of Halo halo ingredients next to the cashier, never paid attention to it because i know its always good. while eating Halo halo we noticed mainly gelatin nata de coco and black tapioca and theres ube ice cream of course and the horrible corn flakes in replacement of pinipig rice crunch. I said to myself this is the worst Halo halo ever no beans at all and a tiny piece of hard leche flan for $ 7.49 come on all the ingredients shaved ice is no more than 2 dollars. What a RIPP off. I was at seafood city supermarket and needed to pick up a quick lunch for the next day. There are a couple of items I wanted to try but decided on their one item combo. You can also get just a rice bowl but I wanted to try their noodles too. My one item combo came with a big scoop of rice, stir-fry noodles, beef and broccoli, and something like a red bean sesame ball. I did enjoy everything. The noodles and the beef and broccoli were very flavorful. The food tasted fresh like someone was just making me dinner at home. The whole combo was less than $11. They also have big bun I want to try. I think the buns are their top seller cause I saw everyone buying them. They sell it warm or frozen. However, as we began to dig in, we quickly realized that the sago (that clear, round ingredient) was as hard as a rock and completely inedible. It seems unnecessary to include it when it's not prepared properly. I'm sure they are aware of what they're offering. After this experience, I have no intention of returning to Chow King. The food is consistently tasty. The lines are always long but move quickly. And the best part of Chowking is their employees - the staff is always sweet, patient and accommodating. But there may be some times that you have to be on top of things because if not, they'll forget to queue your order and you'll end up waiting a much longer time than expected. It's important to remember though that these people are human, prone to errors and are doing their best. They're not out to inconvenience you. They just make mistakes every now and then - just like we all do. One thing I am sure of - these wonderful Filipinos want nothing more than to please you, their customer. Just a suggestion to the staff: please try to not speak in shorthand to the customer because mistakes are made that way. When you say "you want the salt and pepper?" what do you mean, salt and pepper chicken or salt and pepper pork? Let's elevate Filipino-American customer communication and not be afraid to use longhand because that provides more clarity and better customer retention in the long run. Try the frozen siomai - they are great for quick dinners when you don't know what to make. Our family is partial to the lariat chicken which tastes like heaven. Today is National Bao Day and Chow King has a promo. Buy 6, Get 6 FREE so I ordered in advance and picked up at 5pm. When I went there 10 mins before 5pm, I went to the pick up area and lasted one of the employees for my order. It happened that the employee that I spoke with was one of the managers and he helped me right away. He made sure that all my orders (2 promo orders with additional other orders) were complete since I put them in advance. Excellent job for that male manager! Also, I would like to mention the staff who were there. People started to come and pick up their orders and they were able to accommodate everybody. The two things I come here for are the lumpiang Shanghai ("lumpia") and the sago at gulaman (which they refer to as the "black jelly" drink). I like the lumpia here because every time I've ordered it, it's freshly cooked, with the perfect inside temperature. If you order lumpia, make sure you ask for at least three packets of lumpia sauce for every six-piece order. The sauce is a must-have for lumpia. Often, they don't include the sauce or are very stingy with it. As for the black jelly drink, it's a standard sago at gulaman. Usually, you have to go to a sit-down Filipino restaurant to have this drink (or, alternatively, spend one to two hours preparing a batch at home). But, at Chowking, you can order gulaman at sago, in a fast food setting, and have it in five to 10 minutes. I've tried other items here and to be honest, nothing really stands out to me except for the lumpia, black jelly drink, and the occasional halo-halo. This is also one of the better places for halo-halo. (Halo-halo is a shaved-ice dessert, mixed with fruits, beans, tapioca pearls, ube, and ube ice cream.) read more
