I don't like to leave reviews on Yelp unless it was really bad or really good, but I feel the need to leave a review here as the main reason I chose Chris's Insulation Services was because they provided the services we were looking for, had all 5-star reviews on Yelp, and were the cheapest. Our Dryer Vent + HVAC duct cleaning experience, was not overly negative or positive, but I feel obligated to leave an honest review, so CIS and future potential customers are aware... The worker that came was nice (took ~10m to get from being buzzed into the building to our door--we live in a small building on the top floor, but it is only the 4th floor--a little odd, but no big deal). There was a bit of a language barrier, but nothing major: he had a translator app on his phone and also invited me to call Cristino himself if needed and he would translate back to the worker (he never provided his name so I'm not sure who did the work here). The original request was for 8 ducts to clean, but 3 of them we don't know what they do, and only 1 of those 3 actually blows any air, but we never use it. He said probably no need to service the ones that don't blow air. In the end, he didn't clean the one that did blow air, but we don't really use it, so no big whoop...(though would like to have known what it's for and was hoping he could tell me, but no dice)... The original estimate was ~3h for the 8 ducts plus dryer vent. It ended up being ~3.5h for just 5 vents and the dryer vent (so would have likely been more had he done all 8 vents). He showed me before and after photos of our vents which was nice. Paid by Zelle and made sure to text Cristino the updated/lowered cost before paying, to make sure we are all in agreement. Later, I noticed that there is dust debris all over my bathroom items that are under the vent (hair stuff, makeup, jewelry, etc.). I keep most of that stuff in open containers so was not too pleased that I had to empty all my various containers and clean/pick out dust out of all my personal items--wondered why they didn't just put a cloth down before working there...have never had this service done before so don't know but would assume as much considering the nature of the work... Then noticed he didn't plug things back in that he had unplugged, or move items he had moved to do the work back to where he found them. Not a huge deal, but something I would just assume would be done (put things back where/how you found them, cover work areas with dust cloth to prevent unnecessary mess for a job that I would assume is inherently messy). ~7am next day, am awoken by the sounds of our smoke alarms going off in the condo--have never heard it as we've only ever heard the low battery chirp on our smoke detectors, and this was definitely something else! A bit panicked trying to address it as I wasn't even sure what it was at first... They turned off on their own right as I was ready to climb the step ladder... Wondered if the cleaning had anything to do with it--we've lived in this unit for 12y and have never had the smoke detectors go off... The heat wasn't running and no one was cooking so thought it a bit odd but whatever... I go to turn the heat on in the bedroom and it doesn't work! In all 12y we've lived in this unit we have never had any issues with the heaters, so start to suspect that the duct work may have caused it, so look up if duct work can break your heater and see that it shouldn't if done right, but can if maybe a wire is jostled, or dust falls on a part that prevents it from working properly... I text Cristino: let him know the heater isn't working and wondering if it is due to the work and thank him in advance for his response. Look up how to fix a broken heater and see there's a way to "reset" the heater to see if it works: shut off the heat all the way, wait 10m (reset) and turn back on. When I turn it on after reset, I hear a noise like it's trying to work, but no air is coming out. Then the heater starts to glow orange! I put my hand close to the grill and it is warm, but again no air and that color seems dangerous! It eventually shuts itself off... Chris texts to say the worker says he didn't touch anything so he doesn't know what happened but if it persists he'll have to come out and take a look. I tell him it's persisting, he says he'll come 7:30am next day--great responsiveness, but I'm not available so ask him to come later and we agree in text/writing that he will come ~11/11:30am. ~12:15pm next day, haven't heard from him, so text but get no response, so call and he reiterates the worker didn't touch anything and I say I understand but we agreed to him coming to investigate. Says he's on a job and can't come until 5, so we reschedule to next day. Next day he comes with another worker to investigate. Eventually they take heater out, clear dust from on/around it and it's fixed! So all is fixed and fine! But not a perfect experience... TLDR: Nice workers, quality/communication issues, best price. read more

Had Chris and Juan come out for a quote for my attic and garage. Chris didn't just stand in the entrance of the attic and take pictures. He suited up and went all the way in to measure, crawling through rat poop as he did it. They had the best price out of 3 companies I had come out for a quote. Air sealing the attic, removing all old insulation, sanitizing and pest exclusion were included in the price, making it extra appealing. They were on time, easy to work with and clear with communication. They taped off all the areas that might get dusty and then went to town, sucking out all the gross rat poop the old owners left with the bad insulation. They sent pictures as they went. I had a really old metal duct that the old owners had wrapped in bad insulation. When removing the insulation under the duct, it got disconnected. They gave me the option to replace it with insulated flexible duct work. Was a much better price than I had previously been quoted so we decided to do it. So glad we chose to work with Chris. All the rooms are much more comfortable and the cold spots have all evened out with the rest of the house. After looking at costs for installation and hiring a handyman at $25-$40 an hour, I decided to go with a professional at a company that will get rid of the old stuff, rodent proof and sanitize, put down vapor barrier, and bring my attic to R38 specs. After getting bids from more than 12 companies, I ended up with Chris Insulation Service. I actually found him by contacting a couple of the big HVAC companies. One of them told me they didn't have time right now to deal with just insulation, but they referred me to one of the gentleman that they subcontract at work to. Very reasonable, .. around three grand for the whole works (I have a 1400 square-foot attic space). They were and out in less than a day. They were very careful to create a dust barrier to the rest of the house. All they did the vacuuming and work. They were also able to provide me a separate invoice for the cost of the materials, so that I can use to claim a federal tax credit. I called Cristino, the owner of Chris's Insulation Services on an early Friday afternoon. I told him that I had a problem with rodents (we had seen a rat and a mouse and have historically had rodent issues). However, the more immediate concern was that a few days before we had an extremely hot day and when we turned on our central air conditioning, we had insulation coming up through the floor vents in our family and living room. Cristino told me that he could come the next morning (Saturday) to do an inspection and provide an estimate. He crawled under the house, took about 15 pictures to show us what was happening down there. He found the remains of a dead rat and evidence that a rat had crawled through our ducts and chewed his way through, leaving holes in the ducts and advised that we replace the ducts and vents. He also checked the insulation under the floor and advised that it was untampered and should remain intact. He also went into our attic to check for any signs of activity and fortunately found none but did point out that at some time in the future, we may want to have them remove the blown in insulation and replace it with insulation baffles which we will have him do at a later date. It was a very thorough inspection. He told me that he could have his crew come that same Saturday afternoon to replace the ducts and vents. They would also provide rodent exclusion checking the perimeter of the house for any openings where a rodent could get back in and offered a 1 year warranty on his work including the rodent exclusion. Ninety minutes later his crew had traveled from the Bay Area to our home in Santa Rosa to begin the work. Since they were going through the crawlspace, they covered our floor from the front door to the crawlspace area in a downstairs bedroom and then covered all of the furniture in that bedroom. I appreciated how neat they were. They pulled out all of the old ducting, opened brand new boxes of the ducts and vents and spent the next four hours under my house. The crew was managed by Cristino's brother Juan. He was very professional, explained everything to me, took pictures of the old ducting as well as pictures of the completed ducting work under the house. They did a wonderful job. Upon completing the ductwork, they inspected for any openings around the house, found a couple of openings and fixed them up. Juan also went around the house with me to test each heater vent to be sure that we were getting a heavy stream of air coming through. Their price was very fair and extremely competitive. I know that because we had another company provide an estimate earlier in the week and they wanted to pull out all of the insulation under my house which didn't need to be done and gave me an estimate for four times the cost of Chris's Insulation Services. I really appreciated that they didn't suggest work that didn't need doing ( you can't really know what's going on under your house) and only recommended the services that needed to be addressed immediately (and in their case, immediately was the same afternoon.)
