This is a family restaurant...the type of place where the waitresses are seasoned, the vegetables are canned and the chicken fried steak is the best thing on the menu. Iced tea is refreshed frequently and the home-made pies have mile-high merengue. Sure the age of the average patron probably exceeds 70, but I'm not going to let that stop me from taking my kids to a restaurant where my daughter can get spaghetti and meatballs, my son can order scrambled eggs and pancakes and I am completely satisfied with a greek salad topped with gyro meat. I had been to Lancaster location a couple of times but it closed a while ago and missed it. This location is right next to my new Job so I went for lunch and got Chilli Burger and fries with sweet tea. The food came very fast and my drink stayed full. This local restaurant has been around for over 20 years in the Lake Highlands area. The owners, the Touris family, are an example of a hard working family that provides excellent food at fair prices with a personal homestyle feel of a restaurant. Their staff and their servers are always kind, thoughful, and prompt on service. They do an excellent job with take-out as well. So, true story. A friend and I came here for lunch. Our waitress asked what can I get you guys to drink we ordered our drinks and when she came back to take our food order my friend ordered a salad and asked do you have light dressing. The waitress responded light? He said yeah like I want ranch but do you have light ranch. In the sassiest tone, she put her hands on her hips cocked her head sideways and said sir this is Chubby's. I pulled up a coupon from retail me not for $5 off a bill over 15, our bill was certainly over that amount. The cashier said she could not accept coupon as they had to be "printed out" she proceeded to show me a printed one that comes in the Val Pak we get from time to time. My comment: come on Chubbys get with the 21st century most are trying to minimize paper so phone coupons are great. I have never ever been told that I needed a "printed" paper copy. Also, when checking out cashier's comment was "mama" those are the rules. I really, really wanted to like Chubby's. I've spent the first 29 years of my life in Queens, NY - the land of Greek diners. But it was a let down. The dining room service is wonderful. We had a very friendly waitress who started chit-chatting with us and was very playful with my son. She was prompt with our drinks and food. I really enjoyed meeting her. The other waitresses were all friendly and bubbly with the other customers. We made the mistake of asking one of the hostesses, the one with "edgy hair & tats" to bring us a kid chair, which she flat out ignored, as in walking by our table and avoiding eye contact. Damn bitch, it's not that heavy & you ain't that busy. So my hubs got up and walked around the dining room until he found out. To top it off, she had the nerve to talk about how busy she was running around, as she's hanging out by the register, when we left but whatevs, girly, keep playing with your faux hawk. The food at Chubby's isn't that good. I ordered the grilled pork chops with fries and cole slaw. The chops were super thin, very bland and overcooked into rubber. The coleslaw was tasteless. The fries were good, but so are McDonald fries. Hubs had the chop steak, which came smothered with canned gravy (oy!), mashed potatoes which were also very bland and canned green beans. For desert, we split a stack of their famous pancakes, which literally fell into mush when trying to eat them. For seniors, I'm sure it's great b/c everything is unseasoned. For Father's Day, there were 5 of us and we were going to go out to dinner. Family history is long and complicated, and you don't care. But there were 5 of us ranging in age from 26 to 79. We were supposed to go to the Furr's "Fresh Buffet" in Garland off 635... but the line was outside the door and people were parking in a field next door because the lot was jam packed. Needless to say, we wouldn't be waiting in that line. Weren't sure exactly where to head next... originally, El Fenix was suggested, but we wound up at Chubby's. I'd never been here before, and had no idea what to expect. It's your typical family-type diner: breakfast foods (which I do want to try), burgers, sandwiches, dinners (chicken fried steak, chicken tenders, fish dishes, etc), salads, a huge assortment of pies/cakes. Everyone at the table wound up ordering the Chicken Fried Steak. The "regular" size is $7.99 and the "Texas" size is $8.99. The Texas size one is worth it if you want to share with someone or if you want to take it home for leftovers: it is 2 pieces of the "regular" sized chicken fried steak for just a dollar more. You can substitute a garden salad for your two veggies with the dinners OR you can add a salad on for an extra charge, which 3 people in our group did. The salad was a super basic iceberg lettuce salad some some tomatoes and dressing on the side. The salads didn't have croutons, and were instead served with 2 kinds of crackers (saltines and club crackers). Like I said, they were really basic salads and the dressings obviously weren't house made, but they were all finished and enjoyed. Food was out quickly and it was hot. The chicken fried steak seemed pretty fresh. Other reviews have said the food tastes frozen, but I don't see it. The breading didn't automatically separate from the meat, as often happens with pre-breaded, frozen steaks. The meat wasn't chewy and gross, and the breading was crispy. The cream gravy was pretty bland, but I added some extra pepper and it was good; not an outstanding gravy, but certainly not a dealbreaker. The potatoes were average and didn't seem overly salted, which was a relief. Green beans were different than the ones pictured on the menu (Italian-style beans were pictured), for which I was grateful. They were pretty tasty: obviously cooked with bacon and in quite seasoned water/broth. Had a decent flavor, though. Our refills were super prompt (when it gets this hot outside, I drink water like I'm stuck out in the desert) and service was great. We'd forget something (extra gravy) or decide we needed something else (honey for the rolls), and our waiter was on top of it. They bring out rolls and cornbread with the meal... cornbread wasn't great, but the rolls were pretty tasty. Not as good as Black Eyed Pea's yeast rolls, but passable for sure. When we were all done eating and talking at the table, we got ready to leave and I eyed up the dessert case as we passed. My dad offered to buy me an individual-size pie to take home with me. Why yes, please! Apple! I ate it after I got home and cooled off from the 200 degree heat outside. It was good: the crust has a good blend of flaky and tender, and the apple filling wasn't just apple goo- it was big apple pieces. The filling could've used a little cinnamon or some other flavoring, but it was good. Would totally get it again. I'd like to come back and try their breakfast at some point, and the lunch/dinner menu was pretty good. I can understand what other reviewers are saying about an older clientele, but I don't see why that's a bad thing. The space inside is large, so I can only imagine there'd be a wait if you hit the After-Church crowd on the weekends. It was pretty dead when we got here, but everything was really clean and servers were really nice. Overall, it was a good lunch. Nothing outstanding or phenomenal, but that's okay. Hopefully the rating will only increase once I try one of the locations for breakfast... I am a sucker for breakfast! read more

I ordered a side of sausage and crumbled it up in my gravey, which doesn't have any in it. I love good sausage and gravey and so far have not found one that made eyes roll back in my head from glee. This place has been in Plano for at least 18 years. I have no idea why. I ate there once back in the late 90's. I had a salad and a burger. I was sick for days after and was off burgers for a while. The Plano Health Department needs to keep a close eye on this place. In the past I have seen mainly Cs although right now they have a B. After nearly a decade I still remember how rude and snooty the waitress was. I remember the food was bland and flavorless. The dressing for the salad was watery, added to poorly drained lettuce. When I pass by I say "Who's for some Salad Soup?" And the Grease, I remember the Grease on the fries and flooding out of the burger. Even the tea had a film of Grease on top. Look, I love old people. I like seeing them, I am a fan of their war stories and tales of by-gone days, and they are usually really nice. I have no problem that this place was packed with seniors at 12pm. But really, at 12pm on a Sunday, this place was packed in general. We (party of 12) arrived and loitered around the awesome looking pie display case. We honestly only had to wait about 10 minutes until they put tables together for us which I was impressed at. Not too shabby so far... Everyone ordered something different. Eggs and bacon, gyro omelet, chef salad, enchiladas, an actual gyro, chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak, grilled chicken... what have you. And zero complaints. ZERO. I was eating with my family here and let me just say I was shocked to hear no complaints. And minimal judgement passing! Our waitress seemed to always be around. I was gulping water that afternoon and I always had a refill. I liked how there was a lot of variety on the menu. Now I know Chubby's is not the best place you'll ever eat, but it's very satisfying in my opinion. Next time I'm in Dallas I would love to go again. read more

I mean the Chubby's on NW Hwy feels like my meemaw's house after Peepaw died...it just feels unclean and it smells weird and the glasses have fresh lipstick on the rim. I love my meemaw (and all seniors)..i really do..but if God has a waiting room then Chubby's is God's diner. I have never seen so many people over the age of 70 in one place at one time since I worked an information booth at the AARP convention. Now on to the food. Everything tatstes like it came from those large family packs of cheaper generic frozen foods you get in the freezer section at WalMart. Then heated up in the microwave till it turns to rubber. Correct me if I'm wrong but a steak is STEAK (rib eye, New York, TBone, etc) so I order this medium well under the impression I was getting a steak and they deliver me a SALISBURY STEAK not SIRLOIN. It's as almost Cindy's and Waffle House had an offspring. lol... Let's just get to the details: Parking - 4/5 - Pretty abundant and people come and go regularly as they turn the food out quick. You can park 360 around the place but it's a good walk from the back. Atmosphere - 3/5 - As expected it has a late 70's early 80's decor and most likely that's what it really is. Clientele - NO RATING but be prepared for more walking canes than available for sale at a Wal-Mart pharmacy area. Not to mention the 2 wheeled walkers with the tennis balls on the back legs maneuvering about. Prices - 4/5 - $10-12 range for a "Classic" plate. I ended up with a to-go box so I'll have 2 meals. No bad. Food - 4/5 - I had the Meatloaf witch comes with 2 sides and rolls and cornbread. I chose turnip greens and broccoli rice casserole. When I was first seated I asked the server for the soups of the day and I chose a cup of Chicken Enchilada for $1.99 which came out quickly. SUGGESTION - Ask for more broth and less of the "dry" chicken. A bit of pepper and salt and it was quite good. * - Meatloaf - 3.25/5 - Seems a bit "commercial" and their "Creole" tomato sauce is a sweet tomato base with onions and green peppers. It's decent. * - Broccoli Rice Casserole - 4/5 - Was fresh and hot but needs more cheese. It will be GREAT when I eat my leftover meal after I add cheese. * - Turnip Greens - 4.5/5 - Good and fundamentally correct. I added pepper sauce. Service - 5/5 - All the servers were working efficiently, smiles all around and service was quick, accurate and all customers were being attended to in a regular fashion. The manager even cleared off a plate on my table and brought me a to-go box. However, he gave me a mortician feeling. Overall - 4.5/5 - They have an extensive and eclectic menu which causes me trepidation because it's hard to have that many different ingredients and serve them all fresh. Final Statement - I'll go back and look forward to try some of the MANY options available. Don't forget to ask about the soup of the day! It was my first time there tonight. The persons one table over trimmed his finger nails and blew his nose into his napkin. Our waitress started out great . But was reprimanded by another waitress after making us wait 15 mins to take our order. (We didn't know what we wanted being it was our first time.) so when it was time to take our orders she said "Now your ready to order?" With a hint of attitude. Then came the food. Mash potatoes that taste like water? I didn't believe my daughter when she told me! But she was right. No other way to describe them. The rolls stale. Fishermans delight? Not good. Chubby's to me seems like a typical greasy spoon or Mom & Pop place (it actually kind of reminds me of the restaurant I first waited tables in at age 14 - that place was actually named Mom & Pop's). While the clientele is a bit older for the most part I don't think that has anything to do with the food or its quality. We ate there after a mild night of drinking and I was uber-pleased with the Rio Grande skillet and chocolate milk (it always cures what ails me). While this is definitely not a premier dining experience, it was just what was needed and they don't claim to be something they're not. We were lucky enough to have a wonderful waitress, Roxanna, in a great mood who was very attentive. We'll be back although not too often because we don't need that kind of grease too often, but it's good when we do. read more

There are plenty of places to go but they are all souless mammoth chain places that offer no neighborhood feel and less personality. Pass by IHOP and Denny's and go to Chubby's. Chubby's is a bustling place, probably too crowded during weekend breakfast prime time, especially on Sunday, but no matter when you go you can expect good, reasonable prices and ok to good service. Try the chicken fried steak and eggs which is generally favorite, or the gyro omlette for something different. I always have to much during meal for pie but the pie samples in the display look amazing. The place has a somewhat old school feel as well as a largely grey haired crowd. I'd take this place over a chain breakfast restaurant any day. read more

Was out visiting a friend in South Garland and we decided to go out for a late dinner. Like the other reviewers have stated, the atmosphere is casual, friendly, and the servers are elderly men (60+) in sports jackets. Everyone seemed to love their job. We were seated in a booth right away. There wasn't a line and the only other guests were several elderly customers. Our waiter was extremely nice and got our food out to us ASAP. Quite impressed. I was also impressed with the menu. For a family diner that specializes in home cooked food there was quite a Greek selection. I ordered the Greek salad (it was huge and so good) and a side of onion rings. The lemon pies that they had displayed in the wooden cabinets by the cash register looked delicious. We made sure our waiter received a nice tip. Will return when I'm back in South Garland. read more

During times of COVID and the restaurant was not that full at all. The Owner sat me and another guy in a booth by the kitchen. Then right as we got our food, she brought in a family of 5 with small kids and sat them right next to us. There were several other booths open, at least 4 that she could have set them in, and several on the other side of the restaurant. I am not blaming the family at all; the owner should space the customer out. I confronted her about this and all she could say was, (while getting attitude with me) this is your first time here, right? I said yes, she said Well this is our policy, and I am sorry YOU feel this way. I said I guess it will be my last time here. I see in other post where the owner is rude.
