First time at Chula Tacos. Pop up setup off Market and the 805 freeway. No parking available unless you find it around the residential area. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 5pm-11pm, Friday and Saturday until 12 midnight. 4 types of meats on the menu, Carne Asada, Al Pastor Labio (beef head/cheeks) and Tripa (tripe). Handmade tortillas made onsite. Crew of roughly 15 people serving up. Roughly 15 tables for seating. I ordered Carne Asada, Al Pastor and Cabeza. Carne Asada had the classic grilled smoke taste to it. Unfortunately the Al Pastor lacked that "wow" factor in regard to the marinade, and was not grilled enough to give you the "char" profile. A complete disappointment as Al Pastor tacos can distinguish one taco shop from another. But without a doubt, the Labio aka Cabeza tacos were the highlight. We have been searching for some good tacos in the area. We found this place since it was recommended and suggested by Instagram and tik tok. We had the el pollo tacos, carne, and some of the pork ones. They were delicious and not salty. I did feel that it lacked a little seasoning, but it was still ok. We also got something that looked like a big taco. I forgot what it was called. But, it tasted similar to the tacos. This place does get busy, so order your food and try to find a seat. Personally I was disappointed in the amount of guacamole they put. They wrap the tacos first and then add it. So about only 40-50% of the taco has guacamole. Sauces also didn't sit well. Very watered down. Didn't add much flavor. But 1 red sauce was very good as it was spicy. Pricing is decent. But just not somewhere I will be returning. I really want to like this place . They make the corn tortillas fresh which I was excited about. The meat lacked flavor unfortunately but the salsa we're good and presantation was good with the side of cucumber and radish and lime . We ordered all flavors of tacos and my husband couldn't eat the tripas said it was not cooked enough and was gamey. The aqua fresa was sweetened but tasted artificial . Customer service was good . I'd always wanted to try Chula Tacos when it was in National City, but it just never worked out. But, when they opened a brick and mortar shop down in south San Diego, I was able to try it finally. And, it did not disappoint. I ordered the Carne Asada Keka, and an El Pastor taco. The keka was about the size of my hand full of delicious Carne Asada. New spot and the parking is a bit of a nightmare and there are few spots for seating. Besides that everything else is great! The employees are all very friendly, and the food is amazing. The pastor is delicious but the carne asada is some of the best I've ever had! The meat is perfectly cooked and seasoned. It's hard to find good carne asada that has both the flavor and texture and this place definitely has it! The Kekas are to die for, the tacos are so good as well and they don't skim on the avocado and toppings. Chula Tacos is a hit mostly with the "Gringos" that's probably why a Typical Mexican Quesadilla it's called "Gringa" WTF? And yes there's a lot of hype behind this Taco Shop the Service it's pretty good but that's expected when 100% of the work force are "Mexicanos". First I do need to say that the name is pretty deceiving. Chula Vista tacos is NOT in Chula Vista I don't know if at one point they were but they are more closer to imperial beach than anything else. "Chula Vista Tacos " was a great find! We wanted to see what the hype was about since they were on my FY page on TikTok for a while. The food was great-- you can immediately tell the tortillas are handmade, and visually you can tell as they make all their tortillas right in front of you. They're generous with their guacamole on their tacos ONLY and the carne asada was so tender. Although my husband did say he would of wanted more flavor out of his carne asada. Overall, I recommend this place if you are in the area and are looking for the better Mexican shop. The service was great. We didn't encounter a long line at 8pm. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of parking. This taco shop is right off a main road which is always convenient. As for the food, I definitely recommend trying the mulita and carne asada tacos. They have aguas frescas and Mexican soda bottles. I personally wouldn't recommend the vampiro just because it didn't have enough avocado for my taste. They also have three different salsas, and all of them are tasty without being overly spicy. We do wish one of them would of been more on the spicy side but it was okay and they were still tasty. A downside was that the restrooms weren't very clean. Tried a mixed carne asada/"soft, not fully crispy" tripas Keka, both meats were cooked amazingly tasty (when driving away we realized the meat is actually grilled outside on actual charcoal grills). There was a small hiccup where my Keka got ordered with everything in it instead of only guacamole since they had to delete and re-enter it and the only guac was forgotten as I changed my meats selection but they took care of fixing it very promptly. It's honestly the best taco place I've eaten at in San Diego so far, and I've tried a fair few. And they have the best tripas too. Not crunchy nor chewy. We ended up getting two of them one with just asada and the second one with Al pastor and tripa. They were both absolutely delicious. The highlight of this place is that it offers meats that are hard to find elsewhere. They have tripa, cabeza, lengua, and common ones like carne asada and Adobada. Horchata tastes good and their salsa selection is excellent. The grilled onions are not the ones that I expected ie. "cebollitas" they're just plain chopped grilled onions, fyi. Seating is limited. Food runners bring the food to you so you can wait at the table when you find one. I ended up ordering 2 Carne Asada, 2 Al Pastor, and 1 Al Pastor Keka with a horchata totaling to $32. This place is cash only so be sure to handy with cash! They do have an ATM available. The food did not disappoint. They are not shy at all with the amount of meat you receive. The hand made tortillas were amazing and soft. The portion on the Keka is huge, if you plan on ordering that be sure to have an appetite! The carne asada was amazing, tender and smoky just how I like it. The Al Pastor was great as well with the perfect amount of char. They have orange salsa, green salsa, and chili oil to pair with it all! (I like to mix both the orange and chili oil) The vibes were great. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Tables are available if you choose to eat there. The food here is phenomenal, the pastor is crunch and delicious. I always get the keka de pastor, so juicy and so delish. The tortillas are made by hand, you see it right before you order! Wow feels like I'm in Mexico, my girlfriend always gets the tacos de pastor no hot sauce, lame! I get out extra of their chili oil in my food, it's seriously something else. BEST tacos in SD. I say this as a San Diego native. I've been here a few times and each time is always an experience. Parking is a hassle, but they have a golf cart that monitors the street and can give you a ride to the tents. I asked the golf cart guy on my way out and you can just holler at them to come pick you up before you drive all the way down. So convenient. They used to do cash only and had an ATM on site, but they started taking card about a month ago, so cash is no longer needed. The line hasn't been too long for me and I think I waited about 20 minutes at the most. I've always ordered to dine in and the ordering process is seamless. It's so lively and somewhat loud every time and I've never had issues finding a table. I always order the carne asada, adobada, and cabeza tacos. Each one is amazing. Line is long, but don't be deterred -- they're super efficient. The only difficult part is parking around the area as all the spots are mainly neighborhood side streets. We got the al pastor, labio, and carne asada tacos. We also grabbed a horchata, but I don't recommend it since it was watered down and didn't have a lot of cinnamon in it, and had a weird floral aftertaste, I would skip this. It was lively inside with music blasting from speakers all around the area. These are HEFTY. If you like meat in your mouth, come here! There was so much meat, the only con is I wish it came with double tortillas to catch the remaining meat so I can make a second taco, since there's enough meat on these for a whole other taco. The tacos do fall apart quick though since the meat is so juicy, but I didn't mind since there was so much protein. Once you order, go and find a table as they'll call out your name looking for you as they bring the tacos straight to your table. Mula: basically a cross between a taco and quesadilla, has cheese, your choice of protein, uses two small tortillas and looks like a sandwich. Vampiro: uses one small tortilla, usually a bit more crispy and has cheese and your choice of protein, looks like an open-faced taco. Keka: giant quesadilla made with a large corn tortilla. My family and I indulged in three adobada tacos and four asada tacos, paired with a refreshing sprite and a delicious Jamaica agua. The agua was absolutely perfect--not too sweet, not too bitter, just right! The tacos were a flavor explosion! The meats were succulent, and the guacamole was out of this world. Besides the tacos, I knew I had to try the Keka because I didn't even know what that was. Keka to me was basically a huge taco with cheese added to it. Try it out you won't regret it unless you're lactose. Lastly, the Jamaica wasn't that I drank wasn't too sweet, it had a good balance to it. The service was quick and efficient.
