The experience at Ciao Roma wasn't dreadful; however, it was so underwhelming that I don't think three stars will cut it. I had the opportunity to try: - Bruschetta - Fusilli alla Vodka (with Ricotta option) - Maple Cheesecake Bruschetta = I am reminded of a Scotty quote in Star Trek TNG: "Laddie, I was drinking Scotch a hundred years before you were born. And I can tell you that whatever this is, it is definitely not Scotch." On the one hand, I have not been eating bruschetta for over 100 years. However, I think I have the wherewithal to say: "whatever this is, it is definitely not bruschetta." I don't know what they did with the tomatoes, but they were as sweet as though they were fruit! (Disclaimer: I know tomatoes are botanically fruits, I am speaking in the culinary sense. Also, bite me!) This sweetness completely overtook the delicate interplay for flavors in a typical bruschetta. Any acidic or herb notes were lost. Furthermore, the bread was disappointing. It lacked any substance or personality. It was a soft white loaf that did nothing but attempt to hold the tomatoes. Finally, there was the burrata. This was a nice touch, but considering the star of the show was outside smoking a cigarette instead of being on stage, it was too little, too late. It also doesn't help that it was a little oversalted. Fusilli alla Vodka = This dish was the was the highlight of the evening, with its simple yet well-executed preparation. The pasta was cooked to a perfect al-dente, and the vodka sauce was enjoyable. The pomodoro and breadcrumbs were nice touches, however, I would have preferred their presence be just a smidge more pronounced. The option of adding some homemade Ricotta was superb! It was of fantastic quality and added a whole new dimension to the dish. However, four dollars for a dollop of ricotta seems a little excessive. Then there was the parmesan that was offered by the server. I thought he would come back with a hand-grater loaded with a proper slice of Parmigiano Reggiano. Instead, I was given a small dish with pre-shredded cheese. I have to be honest; I am not sure if this is proper Parmigiano Reggiano, or the stuff from the ubiquitous green cylinder! Come on, folks! Olive Garden uses a rotary grater above your plate! For dessert, I was able to try the Maple Cheesecake. Alas, we are back in dull territory. The cheesecake was nothing to write home about, so much so I enjoyed the sauced bits of dough scattered about the plate more than the cheesecake itself! The gelato was pleasant, but not enough to salvage the dish. As a final nail in the coffin, the whole plate was cold, evidence of the dessert being premade and refrigerated along with the plate. Not exactly the peak of freshness. Some miscellaneous notes: Atmosphere: Ciao Roma does a fine job in creating a relaxing and somewhat romantic vibe. However, the soft rock playing cuts against that. Whoever made this decision... why?! Service: The service here was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. Food did not take very long to come out either. Prices/value: Other than $4 for a ping-pong ball-sized helping of Ricotta, I felt their prices were more-or-less in line with what I'd expect in the North End. The portion sizes were also large enough to be comfortably satiating. Bread served at start: An echo of the bread with the bruschetta: uninspired soft, and crustless. Hey, oil was good though! Thus, there was nothing about the experience to coax me into a return visit in the future. Even though the pasta dish was solid, it's the North End. This must be the CUTEST place in the North End. The decor screamed "good vibes" as soon as I walked through the door; pink leather chairs, marble bar, flowered wallpaper. It was vintage, boujee and fantastic. My husband and I met friends here for lunch. I appreciated that a "glossary" of Italian terms was on the menu so it was easy understand what you're ordering. We started with the calamari & arancini. Calamari was just average but the arancinis were excellent. I could have eaten 100 of them! For my entree, I got the eggplant parm with spaghetti. The menu stated the pasta was made fresh daily in-house, but the spaghetti was just ok/underwhelming. However, the eggplant was delicious! It was a layered eggplant with veggies in between the layers (roasted peppers & spinach). I ate every last bite! Where else could you go to dine outside at such a phenomenal restaurant, right in the middle of the neighborhood square and across the street from Paul Revere's house. Unlike many restaurants that offer outside dining, this one truly brings the dining room outside to ensure an uninterrupted and exceptional dining experience. Who would have thought a maple cube in the legendary Old Fashioned would create such a uniquely delicious drink, and a bat shaped cube at that. The Bruschetta was my favorite member of the Antipasti menu, I especially enjoyed the orange honey drizzled across the freshly made ricotta. It really transformed what can be a "BLAH" of a starter into a light, airy treat just a touch of sweet. A Sunday Ragu with a combination of house made meatball, braised short rib and sausage is something you don't pass up, especially when it comes with fresh made ricotta. Great for drinks! Stopped by with my friend after dinner for a cocktail. It is so cute inside, but we only saw the bar area. It's much bigger inside that it seems. I loved this place. We had a reservation at 5 for six people, I'd imagine you need to have a reservation here, it was filled real QUICK. Downstairs is tiny and adorable - would love to sit at the bar one day. Servers were SUPER attentive. They were ready to get those drink orders in a jiffy. I started with the Rosa Rosa gin drink, which was fluffy and delicious. Next up, espresso martini, creamy of course, it came with ciao roma edible paper on top, and mini paper-clipped to the top, chocolate covered espresso beans of course. Apps were great, arancini I would get everyday if I could. Calamari was good, and then the bruschetta - yum. My meal though was my favorite piece and I'm not much of an Italian person - sausage, broccolini and cavatelli which may be my new favorite type of pasta. We went for the date night special, and the ambience was great - we were on the second floor, so it was nice to overlook the north end. The food was also super yummy (shout out to the chicken parm and vodka pasta!). The only issue was that the bruschetta came as a totally different dish than what was listed (tomato, basil, etc) - it was a fig and walnut based dish, which was still quite tasty, but we would have ordered something else instead if we'd known since my girlfriend doesn't like figs and thus didn't eat it. Came here for a girls dinner and we sat outside. It was super cute outside, with nice pink accents. Our server was so nice and so attentive. He gave a great recommendation so I got the martini with gin and it was the best I've had in the city but it was $21 so that was insane. I got the Arancini and it was super good but very cheesy. There are so many places to choose from in the North End. I wanted somewhere cute, with that old world feeling to celebrate my mom's birthday while we were on vacation. Boy did I pick the right place! When I made reservations, I asked for a table by the window as I mentioned it would be my mom's birthday that day. They not only came through with the table by the window but they went above and beyond, giving her a birthday card, decorating the table with confetti and printing "Happy Birthday " on our menus! They also gave her a birthday gelato at the end. I was beyond pleased and she felt so special! Now for the food...we had bread for the table, which was good! The olive oil and spices for dipping were packed with flavor. We ordered a piece of the Fig bruschetta and a piece of the Prosciutto bruschetta. I'm so happy we got one of each because they were both heavenly in their own right. We both ordered the Pappardelle Bolognese for our main dish and it was delicious. We sat facing the outside which was great to watch the people and be in the sun. The outside seating looked amazing as you are right on the corner, and it's super cute. I ate inside and enjoyed the dim lighting, gorgeous floral arrangements, and neat architectural elements. The staff were polite and the service was quick without feeling rushed. I ordered the fusilli alla vodka and chose the gluten free penne as a substitute with homemade ricotta. It was delicious. The penne was a little too chewy for my taste, but the sauce was divine (I kept thinking about it afterwards.) The sauce's flavor and the creaminess of the ricotta made up for the pasta's texture. We went to Ciao Roma for the first time to celebrate my brother-in-law's birthday and from the beginning the experience was absolutely delightful. Starting with the restaurant's atmosphere, it was cozy and inviting. We found the decoration very lovely and felt that we were traveling back in time, which was a very nice experience. Added to that was the music that was played which was relaxing and inviting to have a great conversation with the people around. And, atop of this, because we were celebrating my brother-in-law's birthday, they added some sparkling confetti on the table to make the ambience more festive for the occasion...Really Lovely!! Continuing with the drinks, we selected a bottle of Cannonau di Sardegna, a sella & mosca red wine from Sardinia. It's a full-bodied red wine with a combination of fruits and floral notes that was really delicious to the palate. To accompany, we ordered the Arancini as appetizers, which is fried risotto filled with mozzarella and pomodoro sauce on top...One of the best we have ever tried! Really Delicious!!! Then, for the main dish, my wife ordered the Salmon Salmoriglio that comes with asparagus, broccoli, roasted peppers, lemon, garlic and parsley, which was absolutely delicious. My brother-in-law ordered the Porcini Crusted Skirt Steak that comes with aceto balsamico, broccoli rabe, and garlic parm potatoes. The meat was really juicy and tasty and the combination with the parm potatoes was very nice. Now, for me, per the recommendation of our server, I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana that comes with mezzi rigatoni and instead of the pomodoro sauce I ordered it with vodka sauce and I have to say that it was absolutely divine!! As we were told, all the pasta at the restaurant is homemade and fresh, and I have to say that I was able to taste its freshness and perfect texture. The chicken was perfectly prepared and the vodka sauce gave it a very delicious flavor tone...100% recommend!!! Well, as my grandmother used to say, a meal without a dessert is not a meal, so, here comes the turn to the sweet treats. Let's start saying that my brother-in-law got a complimentary scoop of strawberry gelato with a birthday candle that all of us tried and it was full of flavor. Then, we ordered a Tiramisu and a Maple Cheesecake, both of them absolutely delicious (although my favorite one was the cheesecake because even when I love coffee not too much in desserts ). Then, I ended the night with a cup of Cappuccino that was creamy and delicious. To end my review, I would like to highlight the great service that our server Oscar provided to us, which made of our first experience at Ciao Roma a memorable one. He was very cordial and polite and he welcomed any questions we had. He also was very assertive in all the recommendations he made. The food and the ambience were spectacularly great, but the amazing and dedicated service from Oscar took the whole experience to a different level. They have gluten free pasta options which is nice but gf no bread crumbs or gf bread. We came on a Sunday evening so ordered the "Sunday Lasagna". It was massive. We sat in a window booth which was my favorite part. Our server was nice, but was very forgetful of the gluten allergy at our table. Overall I think this place is a better date night/brunch spot. It did a very good job of this as the outside and the food was terrific. However it seemed like the food was a little too manufactured. The Tagliatelle Al Funghi Trifolati was good however there was far too much oil in the dish. The candlelit table was a nice touch though. This place is nestled in north end and a great relaxing walk from the T. It was a great place to take a date but in terms of coming here again, I would want to check out another restaurant in north end just to explore the options. Ciao Roma was great! Everyone really loved their dishes! Mine was by far the best (the mushroom pasta). I ordered it with ricotta/burrata on top and then immediately regretted that (lactose intolerant) and luckily my friend scooped it off for me. The sauce on this dish is sooooo heavenly it was really so good. I loved the fresh noodles too. I was a little disappointed in the bread and oil situation but that's okay.... Just thought it was meh. We walked out and ate somewhere else because the service was so bad. I checked in with the two hosts for my reservation while my partner parked the car- expecting to get a table and order us some drinks. One of the hosts said they couldn't give us our table until all parties were there. So while I was standing near the front waiting, I saw a group that didn't have a reservation go up and say "Oh, it's three of us, but the third person isn't here yet", to which the same host replied "No problem, follow me". So out of curiosity, when she came back and no one else was around, I asked her very politely why that was the rule for reservations but not walk ins. She just replied "well you wanted a table outside". Not really a response to my question, but I just said "I never asked for a table outside, I don't care either way, I just want to sit down". She just grabbed a menu and said follow me, and led me inside. I don't know if she just made up that rule or what happened, but she was so rude and had such a bad attitude that I was already in a bad mood by the time I sat down and my partner met me. We waited about 5 minutes and weren't greeted by a waiter, so we just decided to leave! Interior is reminiscent of an art museum, albeit some flaws are present including the enormous crevice formed by the unbalanced tables. However, the food was exceptional. Bad experience here. I came here with my friend and experienced what looked to be the manager of talking with another man and staring and pointing at us. As two women alone, we felt very uncomfortable. We confronted the man as to why he was whispering and pointing to us and he deflected his answer. We did not feel safe here. I went here for dinner and drinks and it was quite lovely. I booked a reservation to a few days in advance to secure the table. The drinks especially were incredible. I loved that they had a pumpkin spice espresso martini which is nice and festive for fall. The Rosa Rosa cocktail was absolutely delicious as well. Both cocktails were beautifully and thoughtfully made. The arancini was an amazing appetizer. The vodka pasta was a pretty good entree as well.
