    Small Honey Cake
    Angela W.

I had a wicked craving for Medovik, and Cinderella Bakery's slice looked so good that I instantly planned a trip out. The cafe is super cozy with outdoor seating. There are display cases filled with pirozhki, pastries, and of course, the honey cake that I came to get. I ordered a slice of the medovik as well as a slice of salmon pie. Service was quick and friendly. I tried a bite of the medovik and almost ascended. The honey, the spices, the texture, the thin slices of cake ensuring good distribution of the sour cream, I had to fight every demon in my body to prevent myself from devouring the whole slice in one go. It is one of the most addicting, cravable cake slices I've had in recent memory. I would go out of my way to come back to Cinderella for this cake alone. The salmon pie hit the spot but I found it rather dry. I love the concept of a salmon and vermicelli pie though, and the flavors were good and the crust was buttery. Overall, I loved the cake and I want to try their pirozhki next time!

Napoleon type crème cake & chocolate cake. Delicious! $11.35.

I love stopping by Cinderella. The desserts are excellent. Really anything here is excellent. Great staff & service. Great value. My only issue is a lack of parking. Sometimes I can't find any & have to drive away. And that is some serious pain, as I must have my occasional Cinderella experience. We'll keep coming back to this gem.

    Piroshki

I have came here several times and have tried many of their items on the menu. My favorites are (1) Beef stroganoff (2) Fried Beef and cheese piroshki and (3) honey cake. These items were delicious. Two pieces of sliced bread came with the beef stroganoff entree. I did not cared for it. Bread was too hard. In addition to the three items mentioned, I also liked their borscht soup. I have tried many menu items but did not cared too much for the rest. This place is very small. There is barely enough room to stand inside while waiting to place your order at the counter. I would recommend ordering ahead online; then pick it up to go. There is a small outdoor sidewalk seating area for dining in. Dogs are welcome. You place your order at the counter and someone will bring your food to your table. There is no parking lot for the restaurant. There is only street parking. The restaurant is fairly close to Golden Gate Park (walking distance).

I haven't been back to this spot since high school and everything is still the same! It's a cute neighborhood Russian bakery and cafe that has piroshkis, desserts, and classic Russian dishes like borscht, pelmeni, cabbage rolls and more. The inside is small but there's a good amount of outdoor seating. It can get busy so it's good to arrive early. You order inside and they will give you a number for your table. They bring and utensils and the hot dishes to the table. All the food was fantastic. The honey cake was delicious and perfectly layered! I also enjoyed the borscht and cabbage rolls and came with mashed potatoes. Very hearty and flavorful. The pelmeni (Russian dumplings) was good too. I got some piroshkis to go and I wish I had gotten more.

We all like a Cinderella story whether it's the Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo this last weekend ( hats off) and watching Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy drafted last and help the 49ers win the NFC Championship. On the May Fourth be with you today Star Wars movie has Cinderella undertones. Growing up the Piroshki was all around the corner liquor stores in San Francisco especially in the Mission District ( a whole different Cinderella story). The piroshki would be a fast microwaved treat to have during lunch and after school. Over the years I have been very selective when picking up a piroshki from a corner store because they can be very doughy. There is one bakery in San Francisco which has been making a variety of piroshkis for over 70 years. This Russian bakery has both the savory and the sweet . It's located on Balboa street and it's called Cinderella. On a Spring stroll I landed at Cinderella. Inside you can see and smell the delicious bake goods which can be sweet and some salty like some in SF. On the sweet side I enjoy their honey cake but no donuts . On the savory side it's the piroshkis. My favorite is the beef and cheddar piroshki. It wasn't too cheesy like some in SF but the beef was tender and it almost tastes like a smashed burger ( not to be confused with smash burger) all in a soft bun. The are other interesting items on the menu like Pelmeni which are Russian dumplings and Siberian Pie. You can wash it all down with a Matcha Latte ( for Don Juan de la Matcha) or the Kompot drink. There is a planned expansion to the Mission District in with a location at 2937 24th street. This will be a good Cinderella story for all of San Francisco. Go to a place which has a good piroshki "supply" these piroshki buns get baked and some they do "fry" they have other baked goods and food you can "try" like their Grilled Salmon salad and the Cherry Vareniki the Russian Dumpling which has sour cream & sour cherries or the "Siberian Pie" So go on a stroll to "Cinderella" which is the place when it comes to piroshki and baked goods because they got "hella" tasty variations like the Blinchiki with Caviar with more than a bump and you also have one made with it "Nutella" and this bakery sings to me like a Broadway " A capella"

Had the peroshki and the caramelized onion dumplings. Service was pretty long even though we were first in line so expect some time to wait. The peroshki was okay. Seemed a little bit greasy. The dumplings were not good at all. You could tell the dumplings were made fresh but they were very dry and there weren't any carmelized onions, only dried onions on top. The place is really cute though. I imagine they have other good things on their menu to try.

May the Borscht Be with You Small Russian café and bakery located in SF's Inner Richmond neighborhood, and has actually been in operation here for nearly 75 years (ca. 1953), as the current owner took it over from the previous OG owners back in 1988. The Good: * Only a short walk from Golden Gate Park, which is how we arrived here. * Friendly service as you order at the counter and they bring it out to your table (if you're dining in) *Outdoor dog-friendly seating *Beers in bottle and small selection available on-tap *Borscht was a satisfying and tasty vegetarian version of this famous Russian soup. It really hit the spot on a cold SF winter day, and their slice of homemade bread that comes with it was a winner. *Blinchikis were both pretty good, but I definitely preferred the mushroom one over the beef, as the flavor was really good. The Meh: * Street parking only (if you can find it) * We weren't impressed with their famous Honey Cake (aka Medovik), as we found the cream layer just a little too cloying with its richness which overpowered the taste of the honey cake. *Interior is very cramped and fills to fast. Make sure you've kinda studied up beforehand on the menu, as its fairly large. Otherwise, you'll definitely feel rushed once you're in there. The Ugly: *Chicken Pelmini were pretty flavorless, and I wouldn't recommend paying extra for the broth because it didn't help. Conclusion: Not sure if I'd come again for lunch, but I'd definitely would like to check out more of their baked goods one day.

This place doesn't try to impress you--and that's exactly why it does. Walk in, look up at the chalkboard menu, and you already know what you're getting into: Eastern European comfort food, no shortcuts, no unnecessary twists. It feels like a spot that's been doing the same thing for years because it works. I came in mostly curious, but the chicken noodle soup ended up being the centerpiece of the whole visit. This isn't your typical "quick lunch" soup. The broth is the first thing that stands out--clear, golden, and actually layered. You can taste that it's been simmered properly, not just boiled and served. There's depth without heaviness, no greasy film, no artificial salt bomb. Just clean, developed flavor. The noodles lean homemade--slightly irregular, softer than boxed pasta but not mushy. They absorb the broth instead of just sitting in it. The chicken is legit too, not dry, not bland, and not in tiny scraps like a lot of places do. It's cut in pieces that actually make sense, tender but still holding structure. Add in simple vegetables--carrot, maybe a bit of dill--and it all comes together like something you'd get at someone's house, not a commercial kitchen. What's interesting is how "functional" the soup feels. It's comforting, yeah, but also kind of restorative. The kind of thing you'd go for if you're tired, sick, hungover, whatever--it actually feels like it has a purpose beyond just tasting good. Beyond the soup, the rest of the menu follows the same philosophy. I tried a couple additional items and nothing felt like filler. The syrniki, for example--soft, lightly sweet, balanced with sour cream and jam--simple but dialed in. Even the sandwiches and breakfast items look like they're built around real ingredients instead of shortcuts. No overcomplication anywhere. The bakery side is a whole separate problem. You don't plan on getting anything, then suddenly you're holding a box of pastries. Everything looks homemade, slightly imperfect in a good way, and you can tell they're turning product regularly instead of letting it sit. Atmosphere-wise, it's casual, almost understated. Not trendy, not trying to be aesthetic. More like a neighborhood anchor where regulars know exactly what they're coming for. Service matches that--efficient, no nonsense, but not cold. Pricing is another thing worth mentioning. For the quality and portion sizes, it feels fair. You're not paying for branding or hype, just for the food itself--and that's getting rare, especially in San Francisco. Bottom line: this is the kind of place that doesn't rely on marketing because it doesn't need to. If you know, you know. And if you don't--start with the chicken noodle soup. That alone explains everything they're doing right.

    Chicken A La Kiev
    Kateryna P.

I was a bit disappointed. Ordered chicken Kyiv - I guess It was boiled? instead of fried, as by the recipe. Didn't taste as it supposed to be, like at all Cherry vareniki - they were alright. The dough was too thick, in my opinion. Sweets: honey cake - disappointed too. Many recipes are just off the track. Ordered fried beef pirozhok - Thats one was actually very good. Pork/beef Pelmeni - also good and salad Olivie. My 3 stars are for these items on the menu I might give it another try with different dishes.

The borsch reminded me of indian rasam - perfect for when you might have a sore throat and just need some home comforts. The dumplings were also great and we dipped them in our soup for extra flavor. The server and hosts are friendly and have good recommendations!

Went here after the Hot Chocolate run. I had the granola on Greek yogurt, matcha and I grabbed a croissant with Brie and a meat (I can't remember what protein!) You stand in line, get inside to order, get your coffee/matcha and find a seat. Then staff brings your food out to you. Great place to stop & catch up. I know we're weren't the only runners there. I probably should have ordered some Russian food to try too!

Picked up my daughter from the SF Ferry. We had dinner next door at Sushi Bistro, but my daughter wanted dessert. And when we walked by here and it reminded her of her favorite Russian bakery/cookies. So we decided to get a few items for dessert and breakfast tomorrow. Quality/Quantity - Got a bunch of cookies. Napoleon Cake - My choice, this will go perfect with my Peet's coffee tomorrow morning. Note to self, LISTEN to your daughter when she tells you it will NOT be good the next day as it will be soggy... Decent selection overall, especially for so late in the evening. We got here right before they closed at 7pm. Atmosphere - Most customers are buying to to-go. They do have outside seating, and there were some people there also. Open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm. Is 7 your favorite or lucky #...? Plenty of free street parking. Delivery is also available. Service - Counter service today, for us. The lady was not friendly, but also not rude. She was just very direct. Tell her what you want and she will ring it up and get it for you. Price - $12; reasonable prices for high end bakery products. Owner Comment - Congrats on this bakery's success since 1953 and Mike Fishman, the new owner since 2008.

How is the parking for this cafe?

Street parking! Can definitely find a space, but probably also depends on day/time

Are the Pirogi with mushroom and clear noodles vegan? Are the Potato Vareniki without sour cream vegan?

What's the birds milk cake? Are there any nuts in it?

Are any of the sandwiches dairy free?

Vegan sandwich! You can probably order any of the sandwiches without cheese.

What items are gluten-free on the menu?

The borscht and the cabbage rolls will likely be gluten free.

You have a delivery fee. Do I still have to tip the person who delivered to my house ? If I have to, how much?

I think you should tip but I imagine it would have to be no more than for any other delivery - like for GrubHub etc.

    Do they sell cheese babka?

Nope. They do have good Hamantaschen though.

What is the dough for the pies, pierogi, pelmenis, varenikis and piroshkis made of? Is it all-purpose flour or whole wheat or another?

Are their potato piroshki vegan (no dairy and eggs in the dough)?

I don't know exactly how they make their dough, but I bet there's eggs or butter within the layers and crispy croissant like layers of the dough on their piroshkis.

Do the blinchiki contain any sesame seeds or sesame oil?

blinchiki do not contain any sesame seeds or sesame oil. Sesame oil is not a typical ingridient in russian cuisine, nor is the seeds.

They still have the crispiest, most innovative pastries every month, and September 2026's menu blew me away. I know the line can be long, but they are working as fast as they possibly can and there's so much love in the pastries that the wait is worth it. ------ FOOD (SEPT 2026): 1. EGGPLANT DANISH (5/5) One of the must unique pastries I've ever had. I would say this is a must try for this month, especially if you like Middle Eastern flavors. The eggplant was super tender and very easy to bite through. But what I appreciated the most was the layers of complexity with this danish -- zhug below the marinated eggplant, and not only whipped goat cheese and harissa on top, but also sprinkled pomegranate seeds on top for added acidity and brightness. 2. APPLE VANILLA BEAN CRUFFIN (5/5) Apple pie in a crispy croissant muffin! Fresh apple pie filling is extremely generous, and most importantly, the vanilla bean diplomat cream on top was actually a nice balance to the sweetness of the apple compote. A great fall pastry for this month. 3. CORN PROSCIUTTO CROISSANT (5/5) A super familiar and comforting flavor. The corn and basil bechamel sauce was addictive and abundant. It will never cease to amaze me how their pastries can be full of fillings like this and not get soggy. The "prosciutto" in this had the thickness and texture of deli ham vs. prosciutto (I actually prefer ham to prosciutto), so it was extremely tender and easy to take bites. 4. BROWN BUTTER CORNMEAL TWICE BAKED (4.5/5) I love their twice baked croissants so much because they have the perfect flakey texture. The chocolate filling brought this entire croissant together. I thought the cornmeal frangipane was super creative and interesting, but at the end of the day this wasn't a 5/5 for me simply because I ultimately decided that I would have preferred a smoother texture to a grittier cornmeal texture. But that is simply personal preference, and the flavor was still phenomenal. 5. TAHINI COFFEE PAIN AU CHOCOLAT (4.5/5) Great pain au chocolat. Full of both tahini and chocolate filling, though didn't get as much of the coffee flavor. Extremely flakey pastry. I've had other tahini chocolate croissants so this isn't the most unique flavor combination, but this was one of my favorite renditions of this combo. 6. RICE ROLL SPECIAL BUN (4.5/5) A divisive one! Butter & Crumble is exception for the quality of its crispy, flakey pastry, and this item has very little of that. It's extremely soft and possibly soggy, but not in an unpleasant way at all. In fact, I actually loved how soft this item was because the pastry didn't outshine the quality and flavors of all the other ingredients in this. The spicy chili oil on top was chef's kiss on top of everything. I've never had a pastry like this before, and I don't think I ever will again. Bravo. ------ ENVIRONMENT / AMBIANCE: * Same space as always, and the line was only 1 hour last week, which was totally doable * They're really emphasizing staying quiet to respect the people in the neighborhood, so don't bring any loud friends here! ------ SERVICE: * The ladies here were lovely as always! One of them was the outdoor coordinator who visited everyone in line with the latest menu and information on ordering so you could plan ahead * Was very fast getting a box full of pastries, but if you order a drink, expect to wait a little longer inside since those are made to order

A must stop if you're in SF! The two things you have to try are the pineapple buns and egg tarts…read more There's no actual pineapples in the pineapple bun. It's a bun with a crunchy topping on the top and so it looks like a pineapple. The top coating tastes very similar to butter shortbread cookies from the Hawaiian's Honolulu Cookie company. The bread is super soft inside and warm, and when they put a slice of butter inside, it melts into the bread. It's also kinda chewy inside like a mochi consistency. I recommend the original custard pineapple bun. The salted egg yolk pineapple bun was also good but I think it should have had a little more filling. If you're craving savory pastries, the bbq pork pineapple bun is also good. The croissant egg tarts are fantastic. The custard tastes like a Portuguese egg tart but the crust is super crunchy and flakey. There's a caramelized sugar coating around the crust which makes it extra crispy. Highly recommend! Next time I'd probably order online and come for pickup. There's two lines and they're both pretty long: ordering and pick up. Btw they take only cash if you order in person. They said the wait was 15 more min for egg tarts and we ended eating almost 40 min :/ so prepare for the lines and wait time.

I've been here a few times and this time I remembered to take photos of the pastries before digging in! We tried the ube twice-baked croissant, ham and cheese croissant, curry potato bourek, and the spicy chicken pepper sausage croissant. Every pastry was perfectly flaky on the outside while staying soft and buttery on the inside. My favorites were the spicy chicken pepper sausage croissant and the ube twice-baked croissant. The savory pastries were packed with flavor, and the ube croissant struck the perfect balance of sweetness without being overpowering. I also love that they offer unique pastries you don't find at most bakeries. The café itself is small and cozy, and the staff were warm and friendly. It's usually packed, but we arrived at the perfect time and were able to grab everything we wanted before they sold out. We'll definitely be back to try more of their delicious pastries!

After picking up a friend from the airport, going to Neighbor Bakehouse was a clear choice. The 101 was undergoing construction, and this was off the 280/Third street, so a very easy ride from SFO. Parking gods were smiling at us, as we were able to park on Third, just half a block away. Line gods also smiled upon us, as there were only 2 people in front of us and, by the time we ordered, 5 people behind us. Coffee god hated me and decided no coffee. Can't win them all. We ordered an assortment of pastries, all of which were good. I usually go for the ginger pull-apart and was intrigued at their savory pull apart. To be honest, it wasn't as good. It was still delicious, but it was less pull-apart and more fall-apart. That being said, tacos fall apart and they're still delicious. My friends over-ordered, but both really liked the pastries they got.

The line around noon wasn't too bad, and it moved quickly since most people in line knew the drill and had their items ready to go. I ordered the slice-of-the-day, which turned out to be a mushroom + spinach + mozzarella combo. I placed my order at the counter and was handed a hot slice of pizza about five minutes later. I was fortunate to land one of the limited seats inside the bakery, although, there was also plenty of bench space in the parklet outside. The pizza crust was thin and crispy - with just the right amount of chew - and tasted slightly of sourdough. Topping-wise, the mushrooms were abundant but not overpowering; however, I wish there had been other vegetables to balance out the flavor. Paying less than $5 for a generously-sized slice (adorned with a mini slice on top) felt like a bargain, especially in SF. I would definitely make the trip back out here to give the pizza another try and to pick up some of the other baked goods.
