I arrive before 1230 which was good because literally after my friends and I ordered, a giant of mob of people taking their lunch came and quickly filled up this tiny liquor store/cafe. Workers were very pleasant. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich with avocado.....but instead I received a wrap. I just kept it and ate it but it was mediocre. I had to add salt to it....would've added hot sauce or something else if available. I also got. Side of potatoe salad which was good tho! My friend got a turkey club wrap which he said was delicious. My other friend got a bbq chicken wrap and wasn't too amazed by that one. Perhaps the traditional turkey meat is better. Good price for food in comparison to all the other restaurants surrounding it. During Comic-Con, I was staying right across the street from this shop at the Hilton. I popped in here a couple of times to stock up on supplies and grab a sandwich. You can either order a sandwich the way you like it, or you can grab a pre-made sandwich from the refrigerated case right below where you place your order. (They also had salads) There is a station with assorted condiments and plastic ware as well. I will say this, I don't know if they make the macaroni salad there, or if they buy it and dish it up into little containers, but that stuff was delicious. Working 70+ hours in one week at Comic-Con stressed me out just a tad so I was craving something heavy. It tasted great so I have no regrets. Don't let the liquor store exterior scare you away! Inside is a simple deli where you can buy anything from breakfast burritos, to made to order sandwiches. Got in late last night and wanted something healthy to nosh on before heading to my hotel across the streetp, and was pleasantly surprised by their selection of premade salads. I got the Greek salad and it was pretty yummy. All the veggies were fresh and the feta cheese was delicious, not waxy and bland like the kind at the grocery store. Granted, if you come here late like I did you will be trampled by drunk tourists but I think that just adds to the charm of this place. I am updating my review, as the service has gone down the tubes. We have been coming here for years, as it is a Comic Con tradition for my group. Our last visit was just annoying and our orders were messed up. We saw the guy write down what we ordered, each sandwich had its own ticket. We ordered three sandwiches and each one was wrong. I ordered - cheese sandwich on sourdough, mayo, mustard and peppercinis; what I got was dry cheese slices on sourdough. The guy taking the order behaved as if we were being an inconvenience, there were 4 other customers throughout the shop. Their pre-made sandwiches all had meat in them; it's not like I ordered some vegan, gluten free monstrosity! Even the cashier did not like the guy. Take your business somewhere else. This hidden little gem of a groc-liquor/deli is a one-stop shop for many needs of night out in the Gaslamp. Let's say you're hitting up the bar scene somewhere downtown and need to grab a quick bite to coat your stomach. The $12 Jack and Cokes you're about to indulge in will lighten your wallet fast so grabbing a tasty/inexpensive deli sandwich from here is a great option. They are around $7 bucks, but the amount of sandwich you get would make a foot long from Subway extremely bashful in the communal shower. They also have more chips than the final table of the World Series of Poker. If you like munchies this place has some really good stuff including, types that I've never seen or heard of. It's almost as if they are running an underground snack smuggling ring with bootleg flavors. Finally, they have a pretty good liquor selection not to mention a great variety of nips. (Single shot bottles) These come in very handy downtown considering the high prices of drinks. They're great socking (not a typo) stuffers for either a Padre's game or night out in the "frat-lamp." When I am in town for business, and I am stuck in the Convention Center, this is my place of choice to grab a quick bite between one session and a symposium. Although I never found particularly long lines here, if you're in a hurry you can call in advance; by the time you walk from SDCC to Cine' Cafe' your food will be ready. Their pre-made sandwiches are just meh, but some of the house sandwiches are not bad at all: my New York sandwich[1] was generous in size, the pastrami was tasty and not too dry (a bit more juicy and it would have been perfect), and at $7.50 it's the best deal you can get near the convention center if you want to avoid Subway). The Reuben sandwich was solid. The turkey club, on the other hand, was as large in size as it was skimpy in flavor. Not a huge choice for salads, but it still beats what you can find inside the Convention Center by a mile. Their yogurt and fruit ($3) is also tasty and fresh. An extra half star for the hours of operations: 6AM-2AM. Very civilized. They also give away $1 discount coupons, which brings the price of a sandwich almost to half of what you pay at Toscana on the other side of the street. 3.5 stars. This is like one of those shops where you can get great fast food in the Gaslamp District. It's also a grocery store... well, it's mostly a grocery store and the clerks happen to make sandwiches behind the register. Literally, you see them make the sandwich in front you as you are paying! My MOST IMPORTANT TIP to everyone is know what to order before you go up to the register. The food may be great but the employees are really impatient and terrible. Don't expect them to smile or even let you know they appreciate your business. Did you ever see the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld? It's kind of like that. Order your sandwich and go. Don't ask questions. This is my go to daytime place in the GasLamp Qtr. From the outside it looks like a liquor store but the breakfast / lunch counter is great. Why? 1. They open before 7! If you're doing business w the east a big plus. 2. Short walk to hotel & convention center. 3 great variety of snacks and sandwiches and drinks at good price. Including umbrellas on a rainy SD day! (Someone was thinking!) 4. Super friendly neighborhoody folks behind the counter. Never think that doesn't make a difference! 5. For around $5 you can get a half of a Cine sandwich and be just as satisfied if not more. Cine uses much fresher ingredients and they put love into their sandos. And, if you so happen to need tampons or toothpaste while you're at a ball game at stupid PETCO PARK, Cine has got you covered for that too. While attending Comic Con: Special Edition, I finally had an opportunity to try out Cine' Cafe'. I had the New York (corn beef, pastrami, 1000 Island, mustard) without the sauerkraut. Instead I added lettuce, tomatoes, and onions to get some fresh vegetable into diet after having mostly Convention Center food all day. The sandwich was delicious and the price was reasonable. Despite the unlikely location, this place exceeded expectations with monster and yet well balanced sandwiches. Not quite as much meat as we had at Carnivore but still big on portions and a stones throw from the convention center. I had a fantastic Ruben on sourdough and the club looked pretty good too. Good variety on the specialties or make your own. The salads were crazy too with quality lettuce (no wilting) and plenty of the good stuff to make those leaves go down easier. Dressing is proportioned in plastic ramekins, but the guy didn't stop me from grabbing a handful to make sure those who ordered them were satisfied. Be warn, it is FREAKIN HUGE. One sandwich fits the entire to-go box. It's loaded with real chicken meat, bacon (& lots of it yumyum), avocado, lettuce and tomatoes. This is not a five star diner so do not expect much. It's a grab and go kinda place. There are a few seatings around but during the lunch rush it's hard to find a seat.
